Tests - Raw and Scaled Scores•After testing is completed, the Government will determine what the national average raw (actual) score is.
•This will equate to a scaled score of 100.
•Children who score 100 will be said to have met the expected standard for a Year 6 child.
•Children who score less than 100 will be ‘working below’ the national standard.
• Children whose score is higher than 100 will be said to be ‘working in greater depth’.

Return of Test Results
• Tuesday 5th July• Your child will receive:
– A raw score (number of raw marks awarded)– A scaled score– Confirmation of whether or not they attained
the national standard
• Due to the fact that scaled scores and levels aren’t equivalent it is not possible to make comparisons with results in previous years.

Writing Assessment
•As in previous years writing is not assessed externally.
•Writing is assessed and moderated within the school by teachers and coordinators, and also with other schools.
•This is in line with the school’s assessment without levels procedure.

Science Sampling
Monday 6th June to Friday 17th June
Not all children in Year 6 will take science tests. However, a number of schools will be required to take part in science sampling: a test administered to a selected sample of children thought to be representative of the population as a whole. (Monday 6 to Friday 17 June is the science sampling test period in which your child might sit the tests.) For those who are selected, there will be three papers:

Science Sampling
• Biology: 25 minutes, 22 marks• Chemistry: 25 minutes, 22 marks• Physics: 25 minutes, 22 marks• It sounds very intimidating, but these are ‘questions in
a physics/chemistry/biology context’, for example:• Biology: ‘Describe the differences in the life cycle of an
amphibian and a mammal’• Chemistry: ‘Group a list of materials according to
whether they are solid, liquid or gas’• Physics: ‘Predict whether two magnets will attract or
repel each other, based on where the poles are facing’

How to help your child
• Please don't use the few new sample papers that are available online as the content will constitute our mock examinations in school (25th – 29th April)
• We will be using previous SAT papers at times to practice and as homework as we have done in the past but there will also be a mixture of other ‘sheets/ booklets on certain concepts/ areas of learning as and when they become available
NB –A lot of the content on the old style SAT papers is still relevant and useful preparation
