FINISHING Use yarn end to join back seam. Using B and 85mm pompom maker (or card circles), make a pompom (see Customising Techniques 1, making pompoms). Sew pompom securely to top of hat. Using B and 45mm pompom maker (or card circles), make 10 pompoms. Sew these around the ribbing. Weave in yarn ends.

Customise your festive hatJOYFUL JINGLE-BELLS HAT • Using a 6mm crochet hook and B, ch 65. Fasten off. Arrange the chain into the word ‘Joy’ and pin it to the hat. Using white thread and a sewing needle, sew the word in place. • Using a 6mm crochet hook and B, ch 3. Fasten off. Tie the yarn at beginning and end of chain into a knot to make a polka-dot. Repeat to make 11 more polka-dots. Sew them onto the hat in a random pattern. • Using an 85mm pompom maker (or card circles) make a pompom from a combination of B and some gold yarn. Sew the pompom to the top of the hat. • Cut out two holly-leaf shapes from a piece of green felt. Using a sewing needle and green thread, sew the leaves onto the hat next to the word ‘Joy’. Sew two small gold bells on top of the holly leaves.

CRAZY CHRISTMAS HAT• Using an 85mm pompom maker (or card circles) make a pompom from a mixture of different coloured yarns. Sew the pompom to the top of the hat. • Wrap a short length of fairy lights around the hat. To secure them in place, use a sewing thread that matches the lights’ flex and make small stitches along its length. • Using a sewing needle and red thread, sew a square of red felt to the inside of the hat to form a pocket to hold the lights’ battery pack.
