Unfinished business comes from a project I did a few years ago. At the time, there were many avenues I could have taken. Design ideas were flowing, but I had to stick to only one, which I did. This is an opportunity for me to explore further the subject, which is the tree house. My aim is to combine the organic texture of the tree along with the architecture and form of the lodging amongst it, by using colourful geometric gemstones.

As a jewellery student we are taught many skills, some we pick up and run with, some we put on the back burner until a piece requires them. Unfinished business was a great opportunity to explore various techniques I have not as yet used. I chose figs for my theme as my summer was packed full of them.

‘Unfinished business’ has inspired me to create 2 pendants and a pair of earrings that have developed from a sample set with topaz stones and some models respectively. The pendants have not been set with stones, raising the question, what is finished? I also wanted to show a model of a collar, bangle and brooch, and a test piece inspired by a watch mechanism with cogs, yet to be developed into jewellery.

The design for these pieces was inspired by the shape and texture of a leaf of the Ginko tree. They are made from silver inlayed with 9 carat red gold. I think they look beautiful against black and are perfect for wearing with that little black dress! These are demonstration pieces and can be made to order to your exact requirements for size and types of chain or necklace. 1. A brooch with 9 ct gold inlay. Can be worn with the flower facing up or down.

2. Drop earrings with 9 ct gold inlay.

3. Stud earrings with 18 ct gold. The lower flower part is joined to the stud by ring and

can move independently.

4. A pendant with 9 carat gold inlay on a silver wire necklace.

5. A pendant inlayed with 9 carat gold on a garnet necklace.

In 2009 I made a brooch inspired by the shape of a Ginko leaf I found in the street.

Sadly it was lost unfinished, but now I’ve picked up the idea again and made a new range of pieces.!

One of my weaknesses is finishing pieces, so I have used this exhibition to finish those pieces that I have been meaning to get round to doing, but not quite got there.

1. Copper bangle, hollow form, with inner fretwork. Not for sale

2. Joy ring: project piece for City and Guilds course. Recycled silver with larger citrine and four smaller stones, blue sapphire, ruby, citrine and yellow sapphire. This spent many months with the large citrine held in the ring by blu-tac.

3. Starry night brooch: conceived for the previous, Art in Translation, exhibition, but made after the exhibition. Recycled silver, with 22 ct gold ball.

4. Swan Spoon ring: conceived during a sculptural jewellery class, taking an old pure silver stone and turning it into a ring.

5. Boat ring: made from the other half of a hollow form pebble I had used to make a pendant about 5 years ago. Silver ring, aquamarine, gold plate inside ‘boat’.

6. Leaf boat / moon pendants: I made one of these a few years ago, and have been planning to make more ever since. Here are wax carvings of the potential finished pieces. All are available for sale when cast.

7. Pendant watch: Designs and test pieces for creating a pendant watch. An idea I have had for a number of years, and this was a good opportunity to begin the design process.

I have looked at unfinished business in two ways, • finishing those things

which I have meaning to do for a long time

• beginning a project that has been an idea for a long time, unfinished business in my heart, starting to create a watch pendant, which is, intentionally, as yet unfinished.

My theme is based on unfinished pieces from City Lit classes. • Copper bangles from

Precision Skills course. • Paper ring and bangles

from Masterclass with Clara Breen: Paper & Silver jewellery course.

• Rings with forged bezel in different finishes from Masterclass with Michael Carberry: Sculptural Silver course.

• Rush basket from rush basketry course.
