SAY HELLO TO...

STRUNZ Wf,| & FARAH JBL

When KTWV plays "Twilight At the Zuq" the WAVEIines light up with listeners wonting to know who's playing. The answer is the brilliant guitar team of Strum & Fa rah Although bom in countries halt a world oway from each other, Jorge Strunz, from Costa Rica, and Ardeshir Farah, from Iran, have successfully combined their talents into □ blend of traditional and new influences. The result is a sound that Is unmisfokenly their own . The las Angeles-Dosed duo stopped by KTWV and spoke with Th® WAVE's David Hirsth

iml BETH K£f NIELSEN rr CHAPMAN

Beth Nielsen Chapman's music is honest, intimate and Involving, Her songs touch a chord of emotion that runs deep within the hearts and souls of those that experience her music. While she admits being highly Influenced by Joni Mitchell and the female singer/songwriters that preceded her, Beth's style is distinctly her awn. She dropped by KTWV's studios recently and spoke with The WAVE'S David Hirsth

G; How long have the two of you been creating musk together?

STRUNZ; We'^re been working together for nearly 10 years. At first it was o small group of people that were interested in our music But in the lost couple of years, thanks in port to The WAVE, things have opened up a great deal far this kind of music. We've also evolved and made our music more accessible to a larger number of people.

Q: Your musk U acoustically based. Does that make it easier to perform live?

FARAH: Relying on acoustic guitoxs actually makes It more difficult to perform on stage Trying to amplify the acoustic sound is a problem.

STRU N Z; Amplification in our case in particular is a real challenge because we have conga players and drummers. We have a real full rhythm section.

Qt Why did you com® to Southern California to pursue your musical fortunes?

STRUNZ; bos Angeles is the most cosmopolitan city in the world, No offense meant to New \brkeis. There are great musical resources here from all parts of the warid. We've performed not only with excellent Latin American players, but with excellent Asian players and African players os well, los Angeles seems to be o country all by itself.

G: Why did you call your latest project ''Primal Magic"?

STRUNZ: There are certain primal elements In the record. We used a lot of rhumba — which has Latin American and African roots, which has a primal, tropical quality to it. On top of that we put our own harmonies and melodies — some Middle Eastern, some Latin, some American Jazz. We also used pre-Columbian, Aztec and Mayan flutes, whistles, and rattles. It oil blended well together with our guitars. When It was done Tf sounded like ' 'Primal Magic".

Q: Some people moy be surprised to find that you released your first album in 1980* Why has it taken ten years to release the second?

BETH: For the East decade I've concentrated on writing and been pretty successful at it. I've had songs recorded by a lot of country artists. I'm especially proud that Willie Nelson recorded one of my songs. 1 felt it was time to do another album, 1 fed that I'm In a place that I've never been in before. I'm more prepared for the "process" of being a stager/songwriter than 1 ever was before,

Q; Whot's your background?

BETH: I'm from everywhere. My father was in the At Force. We were relocated In Montgomery, Alabama. That's where 1 went to h'gh school, 1 pretty much grew up there until 1 married In 1979 ond moved to Mobile. Then 1 moved to Nashville in 1985, Moving to Nashville was a great experience for me. It was the first lime I've ever lived In a creative environment. 1 spent o lot of time concern rating on writing and absorbing different ways to express myself In song. There ore a lot of brilliant writers in Nashville. People like Stew Winwood have residences l he re. Quite o few musical people are moving there. It's got more space. It's economically more reasonable ihun Los Angeles or New York too.

Q: Many readers of The WAVE'S "Mu sic Letter" may aspire to be professional songwriters. Haw da you go about making a living at it?

BETH: You knock on a lot of doors. You've also got to admit to yourself that there's not much chance that you're going to make money at 1. As long as you remember thal your reason to write comes from more of an emotional place thon on economic place, then you can survive. You can make a good living being o successful songwriter, At the same time you can be a very good songwriter ancfnever have things click for you,

Q: "Child Again" Is a song that is emotionally powerful. Is there a story behind it?

BETH: My grandmother was in o nursing home and 1 was going through o lot of feelings, ft took several years after 1 went through those feelings to actually write the song, It also took several years to write the song from the time 1 started to write the melody until the time It was finished. My grandmother's mind was fine but her body wasn't holding up very well. The -nony ol it was that there was a lady In the same room with her, whose body was holding up, but whose mind was going. 1 really wanted "Child Within" to be about accepting that oging process; to realize there's almost a merciful quality about what happens to us as we grow old,
