Revive Your Heart: Putting Life in PerspectiveNouman Ali Khan

Revive Your Heart is a call for spiritual renewal and an invitation to have a conversation with one of the world’s most recognizable voices on Islam, Nouman Ali Khan.

This collection of essays is disarmingly simple, yet it challenges us to change – to revise our actions, our assumptions, and our beliefs so we can be transformed from within, as well as externally.

It aims to help modern Muslims maintain a spiritual connection with Allah and to address the challenges facing believers today: the disunity in the Muslim community, terrorism in the name of Islam, and considering life’s ephemeral nature.

Nouman Ali Khan is a Muslim speaker and the CEO and founder of Bayyinah Institute, an Arabic studies educational institution in the United States. His deep and profound bond with the Qur’an, the Muslim holy book, is at the heart of his work and the focus of his teachings, which manage to reach out to millions of Muslims from many different countries.

Great Muslims of the WestThe Makers of Western IslamMuhammad Mojlum Khan

“[A] work of great synthesis… [It] argues that the ‘makers of Western Islam’ have not only enriched Islam, but also humanity in general.” – Dr Enes Karic, Professor at the Faculty of

Islamic Studies, University of Sarajevo

The contributions of some extraordinary Muslims of the West in recent history is surprising, revealing and, most importantly, worth celebrating. Muslims have lived in the “West” for hundreds of years. Yet the lives of many are little-known but for a few. In this illuminating work Muhammad Mojlum Khan sets out to change this by revealing the lives and impact of over 50 significant Muslims.

Women in the Qur’an: An Emancipatory ReadingAsma LamrabetTranslated by Myriam Francois-Cerrah

“Lamrabet compellingly chronicles the lives of early Muslim women who stood up for their faith, and connects their resistance to political struggle.”

– Bina Shah, sister-hood Magazine

“Lamrabet remains true to past Islamic scholarship while drawing our attention to the many facets of femininity showcased in the Qur’an.”

– Al-Jumuah Magazine

Today, the issue of Muslim women is held hostage between two perceptions: an ultra-conservative Islamic approach and a liberal Western approach. At the heart of this debate Muslim women are finding their voices and calling for the rejuvenation of the Islamic spirit of equality and liberation that is at the heart of the Qur’an.

A Treasury of Sacred Maxims: A Commentary on Islamic Legal PrinciplesShahrul Hussain

This inspiring collection of sacred maxims is drawn from the genre known in Arabic as al-qawa‘id al-fiqhiyyah. These maxims are pithy sayings that Islamic scholars use as a guide for Islamic practice in a wide range of areas, from the rituals of worship to financial transactions. Though technically translated as “legal maxims”, the array of topics these maxims cover encompass the core ethical principles at the heart of the Shariah.

Given its concision, each maxim is rich in meaning, and the commentary provided by Dr Shahrul Hussain gives us a glimpse into the maxim’s significance. The commentaries, written by a Western Islamic scholar, bring out the relevance of each maxim to the English speaking reader.

The Ottomans, from the time of Murad II (r. 1446-1451) onwards,

had sometimes used the title of caliph to strengthen their legitimacy,

but they never made a formal and lasting claim to exercise political

authority over all Muslims, regarding themselves first of all as sultans

or kings. However, these claims were made more strongly in the late

eighteenth century, when, in losing land to the Russians and other

European nations, the title of caliph was emphasised to highlight

the sultan’s spiritual duty towards Muslims now under foreign non-

Muslim rule. It was Abdulhamid II (r. 1876-1909) who made the

strongest claim to the office of caliph again in the hope of shoring

up support for an Ottoman empire that was rapidly loosing ground

to the European powers and to growing nationalist sentiment within

its borders. The caliphate was formally abolished by the nationalist

Turkish leader Kemal Ataturk on 3rd March 1924. Its abolition was

seen a great tragedy for the Muslim community (ummah) as a whole.

For thirteen centuries, since the election of the first caliph, Abu Bakr

al-Siddiq, in the year 632, the caliphate, despite its decline in political

significance after the tenth century, remained the potent symbol of

Muslim unity. The historical unified caliphate under the Rightly-guided

caliphs, the Umayyads and the early ‘Abbasids kept a great symbolic

legitimacy right down to the beginning of the twentieth century and

after, providing a political ideal and a challenge to the misconduct of

Muslim kings and rulers throughout the ages.

The caliphate had come to symbolise the ideal model of political

authority in Islam. Apart from the Sunnis, the Shi‘i Muslims had

established the Fatimid caliphate during the tenth century, a sign that

the institution of the caliphate itself enjoyed near universal prestige

among Muslims of all backgrounds and denominations throughout

the fifteen centuries of Islamic

history. It is for this reason that

the abolition of the caliphate,

even if it had become more a

symbol of unity by the twentieth

century, was still seen as a

great loss by the vast majority

of Muslims. It had widespread

legal and spiritual consequences

for the Muslim community

(ummah): there is no caliph in

whose name the Friday sermon

(khutbah) can be delivered in

mosques throughout the Muslim

world. The loss of the caliph as

a Muslim sovereign authority

was in and of itself a sign of

the sharp decline in Islamic

power and authority by the

twentieth century. The abolition

of the caliphate by a nationalist

government in Turkey showed

that it was no longer regarded as

a relevant institution, a dramatic

change from the Ottomans in

the late nineteenth century who

had attempted to revive the

office of the caliphate to order

to strengthen Muslim unity.

In Ottoman society, poetry, science, history, textiles,

ceramics and architecture all flourished. Islamic ceramics

perhaps reached their heights at Iznik, Turkey, in the

mid-sixteenth century where uniquely seven underglazed

colours were pioneered to decorate tiles with floral

designs, most notably that of the tulip. Similarly, the great

architect Sinan (1491-1588) would pioneer innovative new

mosque designs to better the achievement of Emperor

Justinian’s cathedral of St. Sophia in Istanbul. The dome

of his masterpiece, the Selimiye Mosque at Edirne, was,

in his words, ‘six cubits wider and four cubits deeper than

the dome of St Sophia’ (see page 86).

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.Devoted worshiper, loving father, caring husband,

The model of love, the embodiment of mercy, the pride of humanity,The beloved of hearts, the educator of minds,

The trainer of souls, the ruler of spirits,The cause of existence, the reason for creation,

The most illustrious fruit of the Tree of Creation…

Prophet Muhammad: The Sultan of Hearts details the exemplary life of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

Without breaking away from the tradition of sirah, or biography of the noble Prophet, the book elaborates on the life of the Prophet by revealing many details.

The emphasis of the book is on the mission of the beloved Prophet in society as an active member rather than an overemphasis on the wars fought—all of which did not even make up a total of two months in his 63-year life.

The book is not a chronological look into the life of the Prophet as he progressed from point A to point B, but rather an exclusive look into his character, attributes and qualities through the eyes of his Companions and Family most closest to him.

On the one hand the book draws an intimate portrait of a gentle husband, an affectionate father and a faithful friend, while on the other hand it recounts the dramatic expeditions of a brave leader and military genius. From ighting oppression and slavery within his society to ighting for his peoples rights and freedoms on the battleield, the book captures a life that was oftentimes momentous, captivating and inspiring.

Brimming with passion and emotion, Prophet Muhammad: The Sultan of Hearts transports the reader to the Arabian Peninsula centuries ago, as if lifting the constraints of time and space, and allows them to wonder around, discover and explore with freedom the Age of Happiness.

Reşit Haylamaz is the editor-in-chief of Kaynak Publishing Group in Istanbul. He has many publications on the lives of Prophet Muhammad and His leading Companions. His Gonul Tahtımızın Eşsiz Sultanı Efendimiz is the best-selling biography of Prophet Muhammad in his native Turkish.

Ijtihad and Renewal Said Shaba Ijtihad and Renewal is an analysis of ijtihad and the role it can play for a positive Muslim revival, in terms of societal and educational development in the modern world.

The chains of rigid adherence and conformity to schools of thought (a loyalty not demanded by the original founders incidentally, men of great intellect and spiritual devotion) is witnessing the grafting of solutions to challenges rooted in the past, onto the complex and unique realities of our own age, in a one-size-fits-all perspective, that has paralysed the vitality of Muslim thought.

A Brief Introduction to Qur’anic ExegesisAli Suleiman AliThis work traces the evolution of Qur’anic exegesis, from the time of the Prophet, the Companions, the Successors, the early mufassirun (exegetes) with independent tafsir works, to the present day. In doing so, it addresses some major issues including to what extent has tafsir been influenced by differing theological traditions (classical, mystical sufi, persian), political and sectarian interests etc. and how interpretation has differed in some cases, mainly pertaining to juridical, theological, historical, and linguistic issues.

Reviving the Balance: The Authority of the Qur’an and the Status of the Sunnah Taha Jabir AlalwaniThe Prophet was determined not to allow believers’ minds and hearts to be occupied by anything that might set itself up as a rival to the Qur’an. This work studies the position of the Sunnah in Islam and its fundamental relationship to the Qur’an.

It also sets out to define the historical shift from the Qur’an to the Sunnah, and then the abandonment of both in favour of Islamic jurisprudence, on the basis that Islamic juristic texts tacitly included both the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
