Kukri Patterns and a discussion of how topossible make one.

The kukri is a smallish, usually eighteen-inch-or-less field knife. The cutting actionis enhanced because the angle of theblade presents the power of a chop withthe action of a slice. These pages attemptto give some life-sized kukri drawings. Ifthe next couple of pages are printed, fromthe Adobe format, with no margins, youshould get life-sized patterns.

What I did was either scan the kukri itself,or made a line-tracing of the kuri, andscanned that. The resulting two-pagepictures were taped back together and

compared with the original, until I got areplica.

Note that each kukri, being hand made, willbe different. Paul.

The following pattern had to have the upturned end on thetip removed, That upturn made it impossible to remove thekukri from its sheath, with any ease. The handles now havea thinner center, top and bottom. The inner, raised rings ofwood were removed. The next two pages are the full-sizedpattern for that first Kukri Knife, followed by some not-to-scale pictures.

The only change I would presently make in the above kukrihandle, as of April, 2005, would be to reduce the diameter ofthe center section, more. The effect would be to Increase thecurve, making the handle much narrower at the center. Iprefer a wider part at the base and top of the handle. Paul.

Kukri PatternThe Kukri-Parang that I bought in 2004 has become an invaluable

survival knife. The files in this PDF document will allow it to bereproduced. Some people like to make their own knives.

After printing these out, I compared them to the original, for size. They matched.

The Pictures on the following two pages reprint to full size to match

the size and shape of my current Kukri- with the re-worked blade. The handle was enlarged to about ten-percent larger, in thecomputer, to make the whole knife about three-quarters-to-one-

inch-or-so-longer. The handle is also ten-per-cent wider, making iteasier to use, and maybe more comfortable. The steel of the knife

is almost a quarter-of-an-inch thick. Hardness is such that theblade can be worked with a file.

I would cut out the white part that divides the pictures in the blade, and paste them on to some thin wood. From there you can cut the

wood to the pattern, and keep it around.

As an extra, the second page is printed twice, with someimprovements to the guard you might want to make. It is only asketch, and you will want to round it, or shape it, or something.

Included on the same page is another rough picture of someone-elses handle for a Kukri.

Actually, as I went on, I added some other handle ideas for a kukriknife. Of course, feel free to re-draw the handle or blade, as you

    may wish.
