From Mrs Levers Desk….
Every year is a busy year- that’s the nature of children and schools. 2017 saw us embark on a journey to
many different places.
Our own grapes growing on the grape vines at the back of the school led me to making our first stop off
in Greece in Term One, when we cooked beef keftedes, fried haloumi and baklava.
We went to The Netherlands next, where we enjoyed Poffertjes and tasty pickled fish called roll mops. We enjoyed the loveliest afternoon tea for our end of term celebration, and no one went home hungry. May I thank the grandparents of our students, for your wonderful support of our students? I know that having grandma or grandpa at school makes a bright day even more special. It’s sometimes very hard for grandparents to come along- and parents- but we always seem to have a great turnout and I want
you to know it’s deeply appreciated.
So where else did we travel-students travelled into Dalby for a day at Mary Poppins for the older students, and gymnastics and the library for the younger children. We travelled to our first ever Spring Tyme Musical experience, where we sang in front of large crowds in our first choir experience. We made a short trip to Quinalow SS, where we came second in the ball games competition, even though we didn’t have enough students to make a junior minor team, and one student played across all three levels of competition so we could make a team for each level. We made our way to Acland for our Anzac Day service contribution, learning to keep the memories alive. It was so special to have Morgan and Maria bring a horse and donkey along. We followed the yellow brick road to the Wizard of Oz, a world
class production at the Lyric theatre. So much to do and see…
Mr D went for one of his own journeys, and we were most grateful to receive postcards from him, showing all kids of attractions around the state of QLD and beyond. There were places to see in History and Geography, and real life trips into Toowoomba. Over the course of the year we were awarded $5400 in Sporting Schools’ grants, which allowed us to have swimming lessons in Term 1 and 4, and tennis
lessons across Terms 2 and 3.
Japan was our cooking focus in Term 3, with students trying a totally different cuisine again. We also welcomed almost 100 children eight years and under to our first Under Eights Day, and we are confident of making this an annual event. Thank you to the Hartley’s and Ken Gordon for helping us organise our attempt at a hay bale maze. With the help of my husband and sons we all managed to make a maze
that worked!
In fact there are lots of people who make our school work. It’s a journey that invites people along for a ride of a lifetime. The more we contribute the more we feel part of our great little community here. We love to show the children how community works, and who better to learn from than our families and neighbours? It’s all about getting along, and making the journey together. Let’s celebrate the great
achievements of our children this year, all of whom are amazing young people.
Enjoy your holidays, and from all the staff at Kulpi, we wish you a safe and prosperous break away from
school,
Rosita Lever.
Attendance
Our attendance rate for the 2017 year across all children was 96.22%. This is above
our target 95%. Thank you to all families for valuing your child’s time at school.

Kulpi Playgroup: Happy Holidays
It was lovely to finish the playgroup year with ten young children playing happily together in our undercover area. Thank you to all of the families who take the time to come along– we have young Mum’s, and Grandma’s, and
sometimes Dads and Grandads– who value the chance for their children to
mix together and explore activities suitable for children under five.
A big thank you to Amanda Scheuerle, our Playgroup Co-ordinator for the time she takes to make sure the children have lots to do, and that they really enjoy
their time at playgroup.
A final farewell to one of our playgroup stalwarts– Mrs Carolyn Bidgood, who has been bringing her visiting grandchildren for many years now. As Henry is headed to Prep next year, Mrs Bidgood had her last playgroup visit today. We hope she is planning on dropping in occasionally. She knows there is a warm
welcome and spare chair just waiting for her. Thank you Carolyn for your
company and support over the years.
Playgroup begins again next year, on Tuesday 30th January
(Week 2 of Term One)

PUBLIC NOTICES...
Congratulations
• to Mrs Leonie Jull, who complete her Certificate IV (Education Support) recently.
• Mrs Kelly Keable, who completed her Diploma of Education Support, through TAFE QLD, Gold Coast campus.
The school recognises and values the considerable effort Leonie and Kelly have put in to complete their studies on top of their work and family commitments, and we congratulate them on their achievements. They are both a great example to the stu-
dents of being adult learners, and are a wonderful asset to our staff team.
Keeping a watch on our school these holidays: thank you!
With the holidays fast approaching, we need you to look out for after-hours crime in our school.

Preparing your child for high school
by Sharon Wi
Entering high school can be just as daunng for parents as it is for a child. It is a huge me of change, and
coupled with the fact that starng secondary school oen coincides with the onset of puberty, it can be
quite a roller-coaster ride!
Spend as much me as you can reassuring your child that they do not have to face this change alone
and that it will be, for the most part, a posive experience. Avoid sharing any horror stories you may
have experienced as a teenager in high school – these will not help your child. Rather, recall any posive
experiences you had, especially if you made life-long friends at high school.
Organisaon is crucial to helping your child cope well with entering high school. Those students that are
well organised have a much beer chance of seling in those first few weeks of secondary school.
Here are 6 ps for preparing your child for high school:
1. Ensure your child has everything they need for high school well before school starts for the year
Having items missing at the beginning of the year will frustrate not only your child but the teachers.
Ensure they have enough books to write in for each subject and always have spares on hand at home.
2. Pracse using public transport if your child is using it for the first me
For many students, changing schools means they may now have to travel on buses or trains for the first
me. Help them to familiarise themselves with the bus/train metable and offer a conngency if they
miss their transport. If possible, pracse the trip during the holidays.
3. Set up a designated study space in the home
This p is so important as so many children don’t have a specific area
set up to allow them to quietly complete their homework. The
bedroom is not recommended as this is purely a space for sleeping and
relaxing. Use any area that is reasonably quiet and well lit. Set up a
desk with a computer, if possible, along with staonery items.
4. Set up a high school parent folder
This will be a place to file all correspondence so that you can know
exactly what is happening for your child at high school, including important dates. If you know what is
going on at school, you will be able to help your child feel in control and stay organised. I cannot
recommend this highly enough. As a parent you really need to stay on top of school informaon, at least
unl your child has established their own roune and systems for staying organised at school.
5. Encourage healthy sleeping pa%erns at least one week before starng high school
If your child has got into a holiday habit of staying up late and waking up at lunch me, they will get a
rude shock come first day of school when their sleeping paerns are all out of whack! Get your child into
‘school roune’ for sleeping during the final week of the holidays.
6. Keep your child’s high school in the loop
Inform your child’s new school if they have special needs or learning
difficules. Teachers will benefit from being made aware of any
parcular needs or special circumstances that will help them in
working with your child. If there are any specific family issues that
might affect your child’s ability to sele into high school, communicate
these to your child’s class or home-room teacher as soon as you know
who they are. Never underesmate the importance of keeping the lines
of communicaon open with your child’s school.
