Kvinnenettverket i Arbeiderpartiet

What are negotiations?

When two or more parties whit partial contradicting interests try to come to a joint agreement, they negotiate. Negotiations are challenging because we shall try to come to a solution that is as good as possible whit people who are disagreeing.

Formal negotiations is usually steered by rules. There are procedures, frames and structures that guides negotiations. We know where, when and how they are going to happen.

Informal negotiations: Everyday we are a part of negotiations without rules for negotiations. That can be that you negotiate whit your boss about moving a meeting or talk to a subordinate about when we are going to hold a course. This is what we call informal negotiations.

It is important to think about negotiations afterwards. It is seven questions that are

important to ask ourself. (Rognes 2001)

-         Are my interest taken care of?-         Are the the interests to the other acceptably taken care of?-         Will outsiders be hurt?-         Is the deal better than the alternatives? -         Is this the best possible solution I could get with the other part? -         Did we communicate well? -         Do I wish to communicate with the opponent again?

2. Give signals that show that you are willing to move.

3. Be concrete in what you are demanding and wage about

what you can give.

After you given your concrete demand:BE QUIET UNTIL YOU GET AN ANSWER! You will either have a solution or go back to one of the prior phases.
