This is a wonderful book that deserves to

be in any serious readers collection.

    Walter Dube,

    The Zimbabwean

Mlalazi is an important author whose

work should be found in all serious

collections of contemporary Africanliterature. In addition, here is a title to

    be added to collections designed

    DANCING WITH

    LIFE

    Intwasa Poetry, 2008

Dancing with Life is acollection of short stories

by Christopher Mlalazi. He hashad stories published inanthologies inside and outsideZimbabwe, but this is his rstcollection. Mlalazi himself dwellsin one of the townships he soconvincingly brings to vibrant lifein his writing.

Dancing with Life kept me awake half the night. Funny, sad, energetic - take's youinto the heart of the townships. I'd not advise anyone to read Chris novels withoutrst reading these short stories, otherwise they'll completely miss the point.

    Tendai Huchu, Writer

    8

Christopher Mlalazi is the rising voice of

the ghetto, with all its violence, sharp

    anger, bitter protestations and tangible

    promise of a better tomorrow.

    Raisedon Baya,Writer and Columnist

This little book contains some of the mostcaptivating poetry published in Zimbabwe.

The message of social justice is present

throughout and the poets are voicing concerns

about the ills of society, even where the work

    may seem introspective.

    Emmanuel Sigauke,Galatea Resurrects.

Dancing with Life was featured book of the month for August 2008 on the AfricanBooks Collective Website, and the cover of the book is that of the cover of theAfrican Books Collective catalogue for 2008.

    NOTHING LESS

    THAN REAL

    9

I just bumped into a mixtape by Dope Donnz Cartel andYung Tyran titled Nothing Less Than Real and yes, our localrappers can bring that American heat in the BYO. You wouldbe forgiven for thinking its an American mixtape but then

again we cant use that against them as it is fresh though. The mixtape is 12tracks deep with 2 interludes. Fresh conceptsand ideas on tracks and great potential from Yung Tyran. I amlooking forward for more heat from him because with rhymeslike, with all these rocks on my neck they got me feelingstoned homeboy got me Still On The Grind.

Unfortunately the tape has a slow start as the rst track Famous is a nice idea but is let down but poor vocal mixing. The taps then picks up from track 2 Get Cash featuring NavySeal as it has more clear vocals and is more listener worthy asYung Tyran and Navy Seal ride the beat like its a rodeo.

Its songs like this with a nice production and dope bars thatmake you wonder why you have never had of such talentedguys. Third track featuring Treva S Fresh is a mellow contentlled track for the ladies titled The World Is Ours which addsthe much needed variety to the mixtape. Track 4 titled TheRealest is denitely a sing along with a dope catchy hookand bouncy beat.

Otherwise Still On The Grind and Get Cash are BYO classics inmy eyes. Yes, I said it! Homeboy got a lot of potential and aworthwhile tape out so go out and get yourself a copy of NothingLess Than Real it has something for the ladies, hustlers andgeneral hip hop lovers. BYO Stand UP!

One interesting element within the Ministrys quest is its hunger for statistics. Each school is required to send a statistical reportfter each cultural activity. The statistics have to cover the number of all players as these will be usedin shaping the future of theector.

The Ministry is not embarking on this dream journey alone but has taken on board other stakeholders. Artists and Institutions withvast expertise were invited to come and share with educators their experiences. Intwasa Arts Festival Director Raisedon Baya sharedhis understanding of Arts and Culture and its importance in shaping the ethos of a nation. He made it clear that culture is the strongestool an individual or a group of people can use to their advantage. He went on to extrapolate and expounded on the importance of

    Arts festivals in schools.

    THE MINISTRY OF

    EDUCATION, SPORTS,

    ARTS AND CULTURE,

    THROUGH ITS ARTSAND CULTURE

DEPARTMENT,has embarked on a massive orientation

    program for schoolsArts and Culture

    Heads of Departments within

    Bulawayo Metropolitan Province. The

    Department held district by district

workshops whose main thrust was tounpack the Ministry expectations

when it comes to Arts and Cultural

    activities within schools.

What seems to be coming out is that theDepartment is keen to formalize art and

cultural activities within schools by makingsure that arts and culture is taken with theseriousness it deserves. Israel Ndlovu, E.O

Arts and Culture, observed that the currenttrend within schools is that Arts and Cultural

activities are taken as pass time events orplace holder activities and the department

was working on bringing that to an end.

rts and Cultural activities are given a second priority if not third after academic subjects and sports. However, from theworkshops it seems that era and its errors is coming to an end. Schools are already implementing the Ministrys circular28 of 2010 recommendations which demand that a committee be set in each school that will oversee the running andimplementation of Arts and Culture teaching.

    A

Historian and Cultural expert Phathisa Nyathi gave a paper on Cultural Villages which are supposed to be built by schools. He laughed

vary from one ethnic group to the other. He recommended that schools should instead build Cultural Centers as Villages will demand aot of resources. He promised to give a more detailed paper during Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo.

Silenkosi Moyo also shared vital information on Art Galleries and the importance of Visual Arts exhibitions in schools as a form of
