Introduction

The KWS Variety Guide is a catalogue of cereals, oilseeds, hybrid rye, peas and sugar beet varieties.

If you have any questions, or would like any further

information on our varieties, please do not hesitate to

contact the KWS UK team. (see back page for details).

The guide is intended to give growers and professional advisers the information needed to guide variety choice based on market suitability, regional performance and some of the practical aspects of management that determine how a variety performs on farm.

New this year is some extra literature to help guide more specific choices, such as end-user requirements of the various market groups, how factors such as drilling date can influence performance, what makes for a good ‘late driller’ and how new developments in plant breeding such as tolerance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) works and what it offers growers. All figures in the guide are sourced from the AHDB 2019/20 Recommended List, unless otherwise indicated.

Winter Wheat

Each year in the UK, flour millers use some 5 million tonnes of wheat to produce over 4 million tonnes of flour, with approximately 60% used for bread making. Pre-packed flour, as seen on supermarket shelves constitutes approximately 4% of the market. Approximately 5.5% of production is exported annually. Other users of flour include the biscuit and cake industries, starch manufacturers and food ingredients companies. (Data Source: nabim). Export and feed make up the balance of the UK wheat crop destination.

Comments

KWS Zyatt is the highest yielding Group 1 on the Recommended List. In independent baking trials and commercial experience it has shown excellent protein functionality and its versatility makes it suitable to for a wide range of bread products. A specific weight of 78.3 kg/hl, a HFN of 283 seconds and a milling specification protein of 13.2%, which combined with its group-leading yield across all regions and its UKP status as an export-approved variety, is what makes KWS Zyatt the leading Group 1 wheat.

At 86% of treated controls, KWS Zyatt has the highest untreated yield of all Group 1 varieties. Its combination of excellent all-round disease resistances, including a score of 6.4 for Septoria tritici, an 8 for yellow rust and a 7 for eyespot combine to make it a compelling variety proposition. At 101% it is the only Group 1 to yield in excess of the control grown as a second wheat which combined with its disease resistance, stiff straw and mid-maturity make it the stand-out variety for both the first and second wheat position.

Group 1 Varieties

Group 1

Wheat varieties within this sector are those that are used by millers for breadmaking and give a year-on-year consistent milling and baking performance. They will achieve a premium if they meet specified quality requirements of 13% protein, 250s Hagberg Falling Number and 76kg/hl specific weight. Premiums for lower specification Group 1s (so called low protein low HFN contracts) may be available – it’s always best to check with your local market on their precise requirements.

Comments

Arguably the most exciting variety to come on to the Recommended List since the turn of the millennium, KWS Extase represents a new generation of wheats that combine market value, high yield and outstanding disease resistance.

A specific weight of 78.6 kg/hl, a HFN of 307 seconds – the highest score for both characteristics of any Group 2 variety on the Recommended List – and a milling specification protein of 12.6% make it the outstanding choice in this market group. It is also the only Group 2 variety to be supported by a buy-back contract for full milling specification through to culinary flour from a national miller.

Its exceptional untreated yield of 95% of treated controls is 7% ahead of the next best-performing variety and owes much to its unprecedented resistance to Septoria tritici, for which it has a score of 8.1 – the highest score ever awarded to a variety – a 9 for yellow rust and a 7 for brown rust.

KWS Extase is a French-bred quality wheat that is performing well across northern Europe. It brings new genetics to the UK, but just as with Skyfall, it fits well with the conditions we have.

With stiff, strong straw and maturity equal to that of Skyfall and earlier than Group 2 counterpart, KWS Siskin, it will appeal strongly to those in the east and those looking for complementary varieties to spread the harvest workload, while its maturity and good wet-weather disease resistance will support its appeal to those in the west and north.

Its speed of movement through stem extension is faster than average and closer to that of varieties such as Gallant so growers will want to prioritise it ahead of others when planning spring fertiliser schedules.

CORDIALE

Details Comments

Group 2 A well-established and widely respected Group 2 that is probably the best Group 1 we never had. A specific weight of 79.9 kg/hl, a HFN of 335 seconds – only beaten by KWS Trinity – and a milling specification protein of 13.1%. Cordiale is well-known to growers and is a variety that responds well to a robust fungicide programme. It is strong standing thanks to its stiff straw and is early to mature making it an ideal entry for oilseed rape.

Group 2

Varieties in Group 2 are routinely used in the bakery for breadmaking, but may also have other bakery applications too, as a result they may have specific end use characteristics which are not suited to all grists. As a result, these varieties are likely to attract varying market prices. Lower protein Group 2 wheats are also widely used by millers, but will attract variable premiums - it’s always best to check with your local market on their precise requirements.

KWS SISKIN

Comments

KWS Siskin is one of the most adapted varieties for use in modern farming. With an ultra-wide sowing window, it is the ideal variety for enabling competitive winter cropping and countering black-grass. An impressively strong disease profile and a grain that is widely accepted at all protein levels, KWS Siskin is a versatile variety that fits a range of situations and fills many requirements.

A strong yielder across all regions and consistent across the seasons it is popular as a quality wheat and as a feed. A specific weight of 77.5 kg/hl, a HFN of 300 seconds and a milling specification protein of 12.8% make it an attractive variety for domestic and export markets where the UKP brand is recognised.

Another variety with a strong disease resistance profile KWS Siskin has an untreated yield of 85% of treated controls – close to that of KWS Zyatt – due in large part to strong Septoria tritici and yellow rust resistance for which it scores a 6.7 and a 9 respectively. It is the highest yielding bread-maker in the first and second cereal slot at 102% of controls. Its vigorous growth habit makes it well-suited to later drilling while still offering medium maturity.

This Group contains soft varieties for biscuit, cake and other flours where the main requirement is for soft milling characteristics. Group 3 wheats are unique to the UK, they have inherently lower protein with good extraction rates and good extensibility but not too elastic gluten. At the right specification, UK Group 3s ensure that the nations biscuits are not too chewy, stay the right shape during baking and that the right number of biscuits are produced for each packet. These varieties are uniquely grown in the UK environment and are desired by continental millers for use in biscuit and flatbread production; hence many Group 3 wheats have the UKS brand for export.

In addition, thanks to the lower protein, higher starch ratio of these softer milling types, many Group 3s also have opportunities in the wheat distilling sector.

Group 2

A proven variety that has strong straw and is slightly later to mature. A popular variety across all regions due to its yield reliability, UKP export approval and suitability to early drilling. It delivers its best performances in the north where it is 3% higher yielding than in other regions. A specific weight of 77.5 kg/hl, a HFN of 303 seconds and a milling specification protein of 12.4% make it an attractive variety for low-protein domestic and export markets. It has delivered excellent performance on light land and has shown consistent first wheat yields across a range of sites and seasons.

Comments

KWS Firefly is a biscuit wheat with the potential to continue the rejuvenation of the Group 3 sector. Roughly 75% of biscuit wheat is grown in the east of England, but KWS Firefly’s high yields across Great Britain combined with its strong disease resistance and stiff straw will support its appeal in the west and north of England.

It has a specific weight of 75.9 kg/hl and a protein of 11.7%. KWS Firefly has stiffer straw (with or without a PGR) than any other Group 3 variety and at 81cm is the shortest of any variety in this group. KWS Firefly is resistant to orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM).

Its all-round disease resistance is outstanding with a 7.0 for Septoria tritici, a 9 for yellow rust and an 8 for brown rust which support an untreated yield of 86% of treated controls; equal to that of KWS Zyatt. It has maturity similar to that of KWS Barrel and Elicit.

At 248 seconds KWS Firefly has the highest Hagberg Falling Number of any Group 3 variety. It has consistently delivered high HFN across several years of official trials. It has performed strongly in both first and second cereal situations with slightly stronger performances on heavier land. It is suitable for early drilling although its best performances have followed October sowings.

KWS JACKAL

Details Comments

Group 4 SoftKWS Jackal is the soft wheat of choice for those who favour early drilling. It performs impressively wherever sown, but it excels in the north and east regions where it will be closest to end-user demand and its SWRI approval supports its appeal to those supplying distilling contacts, for whom it is also a good partner variety to KWS Barrel. It performs strongly as both a first and second cereal and also on light and heavy soils. Its disease resistance is average with an exceptional score for yellow rust of 9, but a Septoria tritici score of 4.9, which will need watching. KWS Jackal carries orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM) resistance.

Group 4 Soft Leeds is an established soft feed that performs strongly in the north where it has proven popular with growers for its competitive yields and with end users for its positive distilling and UKS approval. Leeds has a high specific weight of 78.1 kg/hl, a HFN of 221 seconds and a protein of 11.3%. Stiff strawed and slightly taller than the average it is a little later to mature than the average, but close to other varieties in this category. Other than excellent resistance to Fusarium ear blight and orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM) resistance it benefits from a robust fungicide programme.

Grown mainly as feed wheats but some may be used by milers in general purpose grists if they achieve contractual standards. Hence it’s always a good idea to choose varieties with a robust grain package for protein, HFN and specific weight. It is always worth checking with your local merchant to fully understand the specification your end user customer requires. Growers should take care and avoid mixing hard and soft types in store.

KWS KERRIN

Details Comments

Group 4 Hard A solid and reliable variety across the east and north regions, both heavy and light land sites and across contrasting years, KWS Kerrin was the stand-out performer in harvest 2018 being one of only two varieties to yield in line with its long-term average. A specific weight of 76.5 kg/hl, a HFN of 150 seconds and a protein of 10.7%. It is a KWS Santiago cross but demonstrates better disease resistance to yellow rust and Septoria tritici. Like its parent it is resistant to orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM).

KWS SANTIAGO

Details Comments

Group 4 Hard A high yielding and consistent feed wheat that is popular on farms across the east of England. It performs best as a first wheat and responds to a high-input regime. It has relatively slow autumn development but is not suited to early drilling. KWS Santiago is resistant to orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM).

KWS CRISPIN

Details Comments

Group 4 HardThe ideal late driller for those wanting a high yielding variety for sowing after root crops or seeking to delay drilling deep into the autumn. Like its parent Conqueror, it has a vigorous growth habit which sees it establish itself quickly after sowing. A specific weight of 77.1 kg/hl is among the best of the hard feeds while its HFN is equally respectable at 285 seconds. A short and stiff strawed variety, KWS Crispin has excellent resistance to yellow rust but a Septoria tritici score of 5.8 means it should be among those prioritised come spring fungicides. KWS Crispin is resistant to orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM) and has excellent physical grain quality.

GRAFTON

Details Comments

Group 4 HardA popular and established variety that reliably does better on farm than its performance in official trials suggests. It does well in the north where its suitability to early drilling and heavy land has earned it a strong following. It does well as a second wheat and is early to mature making it a suitable entry crop for oilseed rape. Reasonable all-round disease resistance and short straw. Not suited to late autumn drilling. Exercise caution with PGRs.

German milling wheat is routinely imported by domestic millers to add strength into loaves and other bread products. These high 14%+ protein wheats offer end users high loaf volumes coupled with good stability in the bakery.

Here at KWS, we routinely screen these types of wheats from across Europe to assess whether they are fully adapted to UK growing conditions whilst still being able to deliver high protein, stronger flours that the end users require. Whilst many do not make the grade, KWS are pleased to offer a suite of realistic varieties giving growers opportunity to produce a quality wheat with established, added value market interest.

KWS MONTANA

Details Comments

Group E WheatKWS Montana is a high-quality E wheat that is well adapted to UK growing conditions with yields close to that of Solstice and Gallant. Quality German wheats are regularly imported into the UK to provide strength functionality to UK flour grists. It is best suited to medium and light soil types. Its vigorous growth habit makes it well-suited to the later sowing slots while its early speed of movement in the spring means it needs managing like that of Cordiale or Gallant.

Sowing for Peak PerformanceGood performance starts with the right varietyIn 1931 the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) produced a booklet for growers that highlighted the importance of variety selection and its significance to farm performance.

Its direct and to-the-point message could not have been clearer: not all varieties are the same and failure to match variety to the region or farm situation leads to poor performance. In an era where mistakes had severe implications, there was no room for diplomatic language. It was a case of ‘tell it straight’.

Nearly a century later and our choice of words may have become a little more subtle, but the NIAB message is as valid today as it was in the 1930s: good performance begins with making the right decisions from the start.

Much to consider

The subject of variety selection tends not to get the time it deserves because often it is seen as a personal choice and something, we have done since leaving college with little change in our thought process. How often do you hear someone say they are not growing a variety simply because it’s a milling wheat and they grow feed? It’s absurd logic. Farmer meetings devote many hours to issues such as cultivation policy, fungicide strategy and tackling problem weeds. All subjects for which there is no easy and quick or right and wrong answer. Just as with variety choice, the solution is often unique to the farm situation under discussion.

The point about variety choice however, is that it is the first-step towards answering the questions farmers love to ponder, such as cultivation policy, fungicide strategy and tackling problem weeds. Though many may not recognise it: it is one of the biggest decisions they will make in the growing season.

Variety choice determines:n market opportunities and therefore chances of a price premium over feed;n influences whether to drill early or late;n decides the order in which crops get sprayed in the spring; n the order in which varieties mature and therefore are harvested; and n cost of production.

Variety flexibilityThis year KWS are exhibiting at Groundswell, where our plot features three varieties: KWS Kerrin, KWS Siskin and KWS Firefly. Each has been chosen to help illustrate the NIAB point that not all varieties fit all situations.

For example, the bread-maker KWS Siskin has excellent disease resistance and it does offer the opportunity to save on fungicide spend compared with a more management heavy variety, such as KWS Santiago. We know the reliance on variety resistance is becoming more important as fungicide efficacy falls, but it is only part of the solution. We also need consistent yields across regions, soils and seasons to deliver a constant cash-flow. This is what KWS Siskin brings to the party, not a boom-to-bust rollercoaster performance.

KWS Siskin has a highly vigorous growth habit that means it is not suited to early drilling. This speed is desirable where there is a need to spray-off a grassweed flush prior to drilling or sowing has to be delayed until after root crops. It is also useful when sowing occurs after temperatures have dropped (typically mid-October onwards), seedbeds become poorer and establishment is threatened by slugs. Vigorous growth habits exhibited by varieties, such as KWS Siskin move fast to counteract this adversity. Our question to those who drill direct is: how valuable is speed of establishment and early spring growth to you and is something you consider when choosing varieties?

The third string to KWS Siskin’s bow is its market versatility that raises its potential for a price premium over feed. Demand for Group 2 wheats is strong and the protein flexibility – contracts span a range of specifications from 11.5% through to full 13% – means they are often easier to manage and more financially rewarding than Group 1 varieties. This is the basis of what we call ‘Dynamic’ wheat: they have both market quality and agronomic characteristics that either add value or save time or money and having the option to decide which market to aim for – milling or feed –after it is sown is an advantage not to be over looked.

NIAB

Page 18: KWS UK...to mature than either KWS Zyatt or Skyfall making a good partner variety to help spread harvest. A specific weight of 77.8 kg/hl, a HFN of 343 seconds – the highest of any

NotesManagement considerationsAt the other end of the spectrum, we have feed wheat KWS Kerrin. A consistent performer across two contrasting seasons, it was one of the stand-out performers from harvest 2018. Its vigorous-but-not-too-lively growth habit gives it a wide autumn drilling window. If trash management is a consideration, KWS Kerrin is not much taller than Costello at 84cm. Several of the more recent variety introductions have average heights of around the 90cm. Does this factor in your considerations as direct drillers who want minimal surface trash?

Its below average Septoria tritici resistance however, means it needs good agronomy if its yield potential is to be realised. For those in the east who can handle a high-input, high-output variety, KWS Kerrin is the outstanding choice.

It may not give you the mid-season flexibility that KWS Siskin or newcomer KWS Extase do, but its exceptional brown rust resistance (score of 7 out of 9) relieves the workload pressure at the T3 timing. Is having a range of varieties that help spread the seasonal workload important?

KWS Firefly is included in the plots for these reasons. First, it's new and is a variety that will restore the appeal of biscuit wheats. Second, it’s the highest yielding quality wheat for the East

region; and third, it offers the third best combination of Septoria tritici rating (7.0) with orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM) resistance.

Like KWS Kerrin it is another vigorous, strong tillering type with a wide drilling window, but is slower to reach growth stage 31 than KWS Siskin.

Too many offer the opportunity to save on fungicide spend compared with a high-input variety, but we should be mindful of the role fungicides play in protecting the longevity of these varieties now and for the future.

Market uncertainty will be rife in a post-Brexit era, but there is a strong argument that says growing for a domestic market that is not threatened by competition from foreign wheat is a sensible way to manage business risk. The risk is lower still given KWS Firefly’s yield potential rivals the best of the feed wheats.

BARLEY

Winter Barley

Winter barley warrants greater consideration For all its appeal and rotational benefits, the area of winter barley across England has remained steady at around 350,000 hectares since the Fischler Reforms of 2003 broke the link between farm incomes and production. The need to increase crop diversity in the rotation, limit the risk associated with other break crops and the introduction of varieties with the yield potential to out-perform wheat as a second cereal, is supporting a resurgence of winter barley.

n It is often the first crop to be harvested helping to spread the summer workload and make way for cultivations: for many there is no better entry for oilseed rape

n Given the same fertiliser regime as wheat (170-220 kg N/ha) it delivers similar yields and often does better in the second cereal situation;

n Variable costs are roughly 75% of wheat; n Fungicide timings are typically a week earlier than wheat helping to spread the

sprayer workload and reduce the pressure on wheat application timings; n Barley straw has a higher sale value than wheat. At about £65/t baled ex-field this is

roughly equivalent to an extra £180/ha. n Investment in breeding is bringing better disease and virus resistance: in 2018 KWS

introduced Amistar, a BYDV tolerant six-row variety. n Investment in breeding is also delivering varieties with better yield potential: the

leading two-row varieties offer yields comparable with that achieved by the best six-rows.

AMISTAR

Details

Group Year Listed UK treated yield Parentage

Six Row Feed EU Common Catalogue 103%* Confidential

Comments

Amistar is a Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) tolerant variety that has performed strongly in KWS and distributor trials in the past two years. It is early to move in the spring and is early maturing.

In trials without BYDV pressure, Amistar yielded close to that of KWS Cassia and KWS Tower (i.e. at the average of control varieties in official trials) and had a specific weight akin to that of KWS Cassia.

In situations with high BYDV pressure is where Amistar demonstrated the value of tolerance in protecting yield potential. In 2017 and 2018 trials in Cambridgeshire where virus pressure was high, Amistar suffered yield losses of between 0.4% and 0.5% whereas the losses from non-tolerant varieties ranged from 6% to 19%.

Amistar offers the opportunity to reduce insecticidal use in certain situations. The variety can be used to reduce the risk to other varieties by sowing in aphid-prone areas such as headlands, beside margins or around areas difficult to spray, such as close to water courses. Alternatively, the variety can be sown across the entire field area if so desired, but it will be for the grower and their advisers to consider how to make best use of the yield protection afforded by Amistar. It is flexible across a wide sowing window, so can be sown early as per standard practice or drilled later where there is a desire to reduce the risk of infection to other varieties.

www.kws-uk.com 4342 KWS UK | 2019 Variety Catalogue

Six Row BYDVBarley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is distributed worldwide and infects most cereals and grasses. It is transmitted persistently by more than 20 aphid species. Symptoms were first observed in 1951 on barley in California and was later characterized in oat and wheat. It has since been identified worldwide.

Barley yellow dwarf symptoms include stunting and leaf discolouration though it is often mis-diagnosed because they resemble plant nutrient deficiencies. The stunted plants often appear in circular patches or as randomly scattered plants within a field. Leaf discoloration varies from shades of yellow, to red or purple. High light intensity and cool temperatures (15 to 18°C) have been found to favour expression of BYDV symptoms.

Symptom expression is generally dependent on the time of infection. Seedling infection may be lethal or cause a distinct yellowing of older leaves. Plots with post-seedling infections have a yellowed or reddened flag leaf. Disease symptoms usually appear in late spring at stem extension as a result of autumn infection and yield losses of up to 63% have been observed. Spring infections have delayed symptoms that are usually less severe though yield losses of up to 41% have been recorded.

The most important aphid vectors in the UK are the bird-cherry oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi) and the grain aphid (Sitobion avenae). Aphids acquire BYDV by feeding on infected plants and transmit the virus in subsequent feedings. The virus survives in perennial grasses and is spread by aphids to and within crops. The virus is persistent meaning once infected, aphids remain infected for the rest of their life. However, infective aphids do not pass on the virus to their progeny.

OILSEED RAPE

Oilseed RapeOilseed Rape marketsThe UK oilseed rape area has stabilised over the last couple of years following the decline from the peak area in 2012. Whilst the end use for the majority of oilseed rape is very similar there are a range of crop types grown. The proportion of the total area of hybrid types has increased over recent years, the main area of growth being around the Clearfield technology.

Clearfield technology offers growers with extensive cruciferous weeds the opportunity to take advantage of the superb break crop that oilseed rape represents. The specialist hybrid types of high oleic low linolenic (HOLL) and high erucic acid (HEAR) have relatively stable markets and grown on buy back contracts.

The KWS breeding programmes concentrate on hybrid types, both traditional and CL, but also include open pollinated conventional varieties. We select material based on specific UK criteria such as vigour, disease resistance, standing ability and gross output.

OSR Optimum Drilling Times

Good establishment of your oilseed rape crop is key and varieties differ in their suitability for early or late drilling. One of the important factors is to get good seed to soil contact and sufficient moisture levels. This Optimum Drilling Times chart is designed to help you select your variety to get the best performance from our oilseed rape portfolio.

Page 32: KWS UK...to mature than either KWS Zyatt or Skyfall making a good partner variety to help spread harvest. A specific weight of 77.8 kg/hl, a HFN of 343 seconds – the highest of any

Oilseed rape is the crop we love to hate. For all the stress it inflicts with variable yields, patchy establishment or pests such as slugs and pigeons, it remains the most profitable break crop option for most growers. In many cases, an average crop of oilseed rape is still more profitable than a good crop of beans, so it is perhaps not surprising that most growers tolerate lacklustre performance.

Each year about 5% of the crop is thought to be lost. Most of this loss can be explained by poor establishment either due to lack of seedbed moisture, flea beetle attack or slugs. In extreme situations, complete crop failure is not uncommon.

Until now these establishment risks have been carried exclusively by the grower, but with the KWS Oilseed Establishment Partnership (OEP), the risk is shared three-ways:

between the grower, the seed merchant and the seed breeder.

This unique approach consists of a lower capital outlay for the grower with the balance paid only if the crop is satisfactorily established by

early November. The scheme is overseen by the Breeders’ Intellectual Property Office (BIPO) and is outside the

British Society of Plant Breeders (BSPB) royalty collection scheme.

Who’s involved:n OEP is supported by the following merchants: Alan W Page & Co, Hutchinsons, Dalton Seeds, Simpsons Malt, Pearce Seeds, James Mortimer, T Denne & Sons, Quantil, Harlow Agricultural Merchants, Walnes Seeds, and Wynnstay (Ag Supplies).

To find out more about the partnership, visit our website: www.kws-uk.com

Here’s how OEP works:n Blazen is the first variety on the OEP scheme. It’s a conventional variety that is an AHDB Recommended List candidate for autumn 2019. Blazen has a gross output of 104% of controls, good stem stiffness (score of 8 out of 9), is average in height (151 cm) and average disease resistance: a 5 for light leaf spot and 6 for stem canker.

n The grower buys the seed through the merchant in the normal way at a reduced cost. The typical cost for a 4 million seed pack will be £115-125. BIPO contacts the grower in early November to determine the crop’s status. Unless it has been replaced with another crop, it is deemed to be ‘established’ and the grower pays

an establishment fee of £28/ha.

The benefits:n The grower gets access to a new, short stiff variety with high yield, good disease resistance and strong tolerance to verticillium stem stripe but doesn’t incur the full cost if the crop fails due to drought or cabbage stem flea beetle, for example.

n The grower gets all the assurances of certified seed and benefits of new genetics, but at a similar up-front cost to home-saved seed.

n Any auditing required is done by BIPO and there are no requirements concerning establishment practice.

KWS is the leading breeder of hybrid rye and the only producer of pure hybrid varieties. Its range of varieties meet the needs of all sectors including wholecrop silage for ruminant feed and as a feedstock for anaerobic digestion, and grain crop for animal feed, human consumption flour milling and distilling.

Thanks to a long-term breeding programme established in the mid-1980s that focussed on breeding varieties for all major growing regions, the area of hybrid rye has expanded to more than 5 milion hectares across the northern hemisphere and it is now an established crop in Russia, Europe, Canada and the United States of America.

The health benefits of rye are also gaining increasing recognition with its low glycaemic index (GI) and high fibre content extending its appeal to an increasingly health conscious society while its use in specialist applications such as whisky, beer and gin is serving to further support demand.

From an agronomic perspective too it has many benefits. It requires less water than wheat and its better disease resistance profile than both wheat and barley mean it is often cheaper to grow while its early maturity and suitability for late drilling make it an appealing alternative for light land sites or as a subsequent cereal.

Spurred on by reports that oats are the ‘healthy cereal’ that is a natural way to reduce cholesterol and a good source of manganese and vitamin B12, consumer demand for oats and oat-based foods is steadily increasing. There is considerable opportunity for more growth: the UK has one of the lowest per capita consumption rates of any country with the likes of China, Mexico and Brazil all eating more while Canada and Australia dominate.

Helped by increasing demand the area of oats grown in England has been steadily increasing: since 2016 are the sown area has grown by more than 30% to reach 134,000 hectares in 2018. It is a similar story in Scotland where the area grown has increased by nearly half since 2010 to reach 32,641 hectares in 2017.
