Drivers review
Konica Minolta C450 PCL driver
• Busy, but logically organized
• Paper and Output sections look wise
• Paper and Printer Previews are helpful
• Tab names are wise
HP 9550 driver
• A lot of empty space• Nice Tab names• Unusual Tab order:
Advanced is the 1st Tab
• Less features than on most drivers.
New Prototype
Confidential
The purpose of this study was:
• to compare the usability of the current version of KX driver with competitors’ drivers Konica Minolta and HP driver;
• to evaluate the ease of use and features of the new prototype of the KX driver
• to test Quick Print Tab functionality.
Methodology
• There were 7 participants in the study• Each participant performed study tasks with 3
interfaces (out of 4 tested). Each participant worked with KX driver, a Prototype, and either Konica Minolta or HP driver.
• They performed 7 basic tasks with each interface. More tasks were added, when we saw that a participant can perform more tasks during the 1.5 hours of the study.
Examples of Tasks
• Print to an envelope• Print a poster (on 4 pages).• Increase the size of the photo by 50%. Print it
with the best resolution.• Imagine that you need to print a huge document
and you would like to save toner and paper. Change settings to save resources.
• Print a presentation on transparencies with paper between each transparency so that they don’t stick together. Print the slides on this paper too.

Quick Print
• Most of the users liked the idea of Quick Print buttons
• They succeeded with all the tasks, and the average time of completing the tasks was 13-17 seconds) comparing to 16-75 range for KX driver.
• Participants wanted Quick Print to be a list of recent tasks
• Expected to be able to further adjust settings in Quick Print
More Quick Print
- Duplex and EcoPrint Quick buttons
- The ability to save settings as a Quick Print is desirable for participants.
Preview
• Most of the participants liked Preview. • Most of them mentioned that integrated Preview
(Konica Minolta) is better, than “hanging outside” Preview in KX driver.
• Most of them liked Preview (KX driver) and Summary (Prototype and KX driver). The workflow of Summary could be improved.
• Link from Summary to the feature on the driver could be a nice feature in the future.
• Having a real Preview of their document is a nice dream too.
Ecoprint – not easy
• None of our participants noticed Ecoprint option in KX driver or in Prototype
• Some of them (3) found EconoMode option in HP driver.
• When asked by a facilitator, participants found Ecoprint in Prototype, but not in KX driver.
Quality options
• Several users were confused by Draft and High Quality in KX driver.
• Nobody used Photo, Text+Photo, etc. options
• Most users were confused by Fast 1200 dpi option (If it is fast, it means, it is worse quality… If it is 1200 it means best quality. So what is it?).
Recommendation
• To make Ecoprint option more visible, put it apart.
• Adding more icons, Preview, and working Summary will improve usability
• Summary should not include options by default, if they cannot be used in every printing job.
