    Feature highlights when using a computerConnecting the unit to a computer and a network allows you to use convenient features for scanning and fax sending/receiving.

    Push scan

    Scan to a computer You can scan the document from unit and then send itto a computer (page 42). The following scanningmodes can be selected:

    View using Multi-Function Viewer (Scan toMulti-Function Viewer).

    Save as a file to your computer (Scan to save as afile).

    Activate the default email software on yourcomputer, and then attach the scanned image as afile (Scan to email).

    Open the scanned image using OCR software(Scan to OCR).

    Scan to email address (LAN supported modelsonly) (y)

    You can send the document as an attached file to anemail destination directly from the unit (page 42). Toactivate this feature, set the following beforehand:

    Program the email server settings (page 98).

    Register the email destinations (page 100).

    Scan to FTP server/SMB folder (LAN supportedmodels only) (y)

    Scan to FTP server:

    You can send the scanned document to an FTP server(page 42). To activate this feature, set the followingbeforehand:

    Program the FTP server settings (page 97).

    Fax features (y)

    Sending faxes

    PC fax sending You can send an electronic document as a fax messagefrom your computer. For details about this feature, see9.10 Sending an electronic document as a faxmessage from your computer on page 64.

    Receiving faxes

    PC fax reception You can receive a fax document on your computer(page 65). To activate this feature, set the followingbeforehand:

    Make sure the PC fax setting is set to ALWAYSorCONNECTEDbeforehand (feature #442 on

    page 83). Make sure the computer setting for the PC fax

    reception is set beforehand (feature #443 onpage 65) (LAN supported models only). (y)

    Make sure the fax preview mode is turned OFFbeforehand (feature #448 on page 65) (LANsupported models only). (y)

    Note:

    R Received faxes will not be printed from the unit.

    R Messages transferred to your computer will bedeleted from the unit.

    Web fax preview (LAN supported models only)(y)

    You can display a received fax document in a webbrowser without printing, and print or save thenecessary document after you confirm the image. Toactivate this feature, set the following beforehand:

    Activate fax preview mode (feature #448 onpage 65).

    Set the web fax preview access code (feature #450on page 83).

    Activate the notification for fax reception (feature#451 on page 83) (recommended). The selectedcomputer will receive a notification when thememory becomes full of received documents.

    Note:

    R Received fax documents cannot be deleted from theunit.

    R Make sure that you delete received fax documentsas soon as you check or print them (page 66).

    R If the memory is full, you cannot receive any morefax documents.

    You can automatically transfer a received fax document(fax to email feature) to one or more email addresses.Transferred messages will not be deleted from the unit.To activate this feature, set the following beforehand:

    Set the unit to FAX ONLY mode (page 60).

    Activate fax to email address (feature #452 on

    page 83). Program the email server settings (page 98).

    Register email destinations (recommended)(page 100).

    Note:

    R We recommend that you activate PC fax receptionand keep your computer turned on, preventing theunit from running out of paper, memory, etc. Fordetails about this feature, see page 66.

    If the other unit supports Direct SMTP, you can send orreceive the document directly, without using an emailserver (page 66). To activate this feature, set thefollowing beforehand:

    Activate the direct SMTP setting (feature #425 onpage 81).

    Enter email address (from) in the email serversettings for Internet fax (page 99).

    Register email address, etc. (page 100).

    Toner cartridge

    R Do not leave the toner cartridge out of the protectivebag for a long time. It will affect the printing quality.

    Drum cartridge

    R Read the instructions on page 18 before you begininstallation of the drum cartridge. The drum cartridgecontains a photosensitive drum. Exposing it to light

    may damage the drum. Do not expose the drum cartridge to light for more

    than 5 minutes.

    Do not touch or scratch the drum surface (A).

    Do not place the drum cartridge near dust or dirt,or in a high humidity area.

    Do not expose the drum cartridge to directsunlight.

    R To extend the life of the drum cartridge, the powershould never be turned OFF immediately afterprinting. Leave the power turned ON for a minimum

    of 30 minutes after printing.Location

    R To avoid malfunction, do not position the unit nearappliances such as TVs or speakers which generatean intense magnetic field.

    Static electricity

    R To prevent static electricity damage to the interfaceconnectors or other electrical components inside theunit, touch a grounded metal surface before touchingthe components.

    EnvironmentR Keep the unit away from electrical noise generating

    devices, such as fluorescent lamps and motors.

    R The unit should be kept free from dust, hightemperature and vibration.

    R The unit should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

    R Do not place heavy objects on top of the unit. Whenyou leave the unit unused for a long period of time,unplug this unit from the power outlet.

    R The unit should be kept away from heat sources suchas heaters, kitchen stoves, etc. Damp basementsshould also be avoided.

    R Do not use this unit in places where the unit is subjectto direct air from air-conditioners, ventilators, etc. Theinside of the unit may become too warm, and causethe unit to deform.

    R Do not poke the unit with a sharp object such as apen. The area around the display is especiallysmooth and sensitive to scratches or rips in thesmooth sheet.

    R Do not cover slots or openings on the unit. Inspectthe air circulation vents regularly and remove anydust build-up with a vacuum cleaner (A).

    2.1 Toner cartridge and drumcartridgeThe supplied toner cartridge is a starter toner cartridge.

    R When using the unit for the first time, please use thestarter toner cartridge.

    Caution:R Read the following instructions before you begin

    installation. The drum cartridge contains aphotosensitive drum. Exposing it to light maydamage the drum.

    Do not expose the drum cartridge to light formore than 5 minutes.

    Do not touch or scratch the drum surface ().

    3.6 Configuring the unit to accessthe LANyYou can use a computer connected to the LAN for somefeatures of this unit (printer, scanner, etc.). To enablethese features, you need to set the IP address, subnetmask, and default gateway in the unit.

    3.6.1 Setting up automatically with a DHCP

    server

    If your network administrator manages the network witha DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server,it will automatically assign an IP (Internet Protocol)

    address, subnet mask, and default gateway to the unit.1 After connecting the LAN cable to the unit and the

    computer, turn the power switch ON.

    4.1 Recording paperNote for recording paper:

    R We recommend that you test paper (especiallyspecial sizes and types of paper) on the unit beforepurchasing large quantities.

    R Do not use the following types of paper:

    Paper with cotton and/or fibre content that is over20 %, such as letterhead paper or paper used forresumes

    Extremely smooth or shiny paper, or paper that ishighly textured

    Coated, damaged or wrinkled paper

    Paper with foreign objects attached, such as tabsor staples

    Paper that has dust, lint or oil stains

    Paper that will melt, vaporize, discolour, scorchor emit dangerous fumes near 200 C, such as

    vellum paper. These materials may transfer ontothe fusing roller and cause damage.

    Chemically treated paper such as carbon orcarbonless duplicating paper

    R Some paper is designed to be printed on only oneside. Try printing on the other side of the paper if youare not happy with the print quality, or if misfeedingoccurs.

    R Do not use paper of different types or thicknesses atthe same time. This may cause paper jams.

Toprevent this, we recommend feeding the documentone page at a time when using the automaticdocument feeder, or to use the scanner glass.

    R The total height of the documents when laid flat, mustbe less than 7 mm. If the documents exceed thecapacity of the automatic document feeder, they mayfall or cause a jam in the feeder.

    R To set a document with a width of less than210 mm, we recommend using the scanner glass tocopy the original document onto A4 or letter-sizepaper, then setting the copied document for betterresults.

    R Do not set documents that do not satisfy therequirements of size and weight. Make a copy of thedocument using the scanner glass and set the copy.

    5.1 Printing from WindowsapplicationsYou can print a file created in a Windows application. Forexample, to print from WordPad, proceed as follows:

    1 Open the document you want to print.

    2 Select [Print]from the menu.R The [Print]dialogue box will appear.

    3 Select the units name as the active printer.R If you have changed the name of the unit when

    installing, select that name from the list.

    R When mode restriction (feature #154 onpage 103) is activated, enter the departmentcode in the printer settings using [Job Type]beforehand (page 37). If the department codedoes not match, or the department code restrictsthe print mode, printing will be cancelled.

    R To change the printer settings, click[Preferences], then click the desired tab.Change the printer settings, then click [OK].

    4 Click [Print].R The unit will start printing.

    You can use various printing features and preview theresulting printed image without having to make a testprint.

    Printer settings

    You can change or display the settings on the followingtabs in step 5.

    Combining multiple documents

    You can display multiple pages created in variousapplications and handle it as a single document.

    1. Perform steps 1 to 4 on 5.2 Easy Print Utility.

    2. Open another document you want to add to the Easy

    Print Utility.3. Select [Print]from the menu.

    R The [Print]dialogue box will appear.

    4. Select [Panasonic Easy Print Driver]as the activeprinter.

    5. Click [Print].

    R The document will be added after the last page ofthe previous document in the print previewwindow.

    6. Repeat steps 2 to 5.

    7. If necessary, change the printer settings (page 40).

    8. Click [Print]icon on the print toolbar.

    Saving a file as PDF file

    You can save the previewed files in PDF format insteadof printing it.

    1. Perform steps 1 to 4 on 5.2 Easy Print Utility.

    2. Click the [Save PDF file]icon on the print toolbar.R The [Save As]dialogue box appears.

    3. Specify the folder to save, enter the file name, andthen click [Save]. The [Save PDF file]dialogueappears while PDF files are being created and saved.

    5.3 Direct printing from a USB

    How the scanned data is handled

    The scanned image will be automatically saved in thefolder selected in the [Settings]window. To change thefolder, see page 27.

    R When scanning to Multi-Function Viewer, thescanned image will be displayed in the[Multi-Function Viewer]window after scanning.

    However, when you select PDF as a file format, thesoftware that is associated to open PDF files willstart.

    R When scanning to email, the email software willautomatically start and the scanned image will beattached to a new email message.

    R When scanning to OCR, the scanned image will bedisplayed in the OCR window after scanning.

    R When scanning to email address, the scannedimage will be sent as an email attachment directlyfrom this unit.

    R When scanning to FTP server, the scanned imagewill be automatically saved in the selected folder onthe FTP server.

    To display the scanned image, download the data toyour computer beforehand.

    R When scanning to SMB folder, the scanned imagewill be automatically saved in the selected folder onthe network.

    When scanning to SMB folder does not performproperly, consult your network administrator. Thisunits SMB function does not support NTLMv2 andSMB signatures.

    R When scanning to USB memory, the scanned

    image will be saved to a USB memory device.Be sure to remove the USB memory device from theUSB port of the unit after all operations are complete.
