Document Innovator

Information society is continually making rapid advances through the progress of IT technology.

As a company that presents solutions through document imaging devices,

we at Kyocera Mita are always asking ourselves what we can do.

One of the answers we have come up with is the “ECOSYS Technology”.

In seeking only to evolve, there are things that must not be overlooked, and things that must not be sacrificed.

Unless we address these issues directly we cannot fulf ill our responsibilities to society as a company of the future.

We must evolve while giving thought to the global environment,

not just to creating user-friendly, advanced document environments.

It is our desire that Kyocera Mita helps to usher in a new era through the philosophy of our unique "ECOSYS Technology”.

We can break new boundaries because we have heart. This is Kyocera Mita.

these ideas not only through the entire product life cycle,

but also in enterprise activities as a whole. In addition, Kyocera

Mita is positively advancing CSR management. Strict adher-ence to laws, ordinances and transparent management is a matter of fact. We strive to become a company respected by the world through our efforts to contribute to the relentless progress and development of society.

Society is always changing, and often society presents unforeseen variables that interfere with enterprise operations. In order to respond rapidly to changes in the societal environment, and create solutions to problems quickly, it is especially important for enterprise management to be conducted though clear decision making and the speedy relay of information. There is a great diversification occurring in office document-related types of work. In January 2009, we launched a new brand of multifunctional products under the name of “TASKalfa” in order to meet the needs of diversified document work. TASKalfa uses hardware based on our ECOSYS long-life technology that reduces burden on the environment, as well as software that offers the best solutions for increasing office efficiency. Through this innovation, we are able to offer customers the most beneficial document environment possible. Our goal is not simply to make the products more functional, but also to provide the kind of problem solving capabilities required by our customers. We chose “TASK” (meaning for business), and “alfa” (meaning the most useful) to be the name of this new brand to reflect this thinking. TASKalfa will provide products and services beneficial to the customer by providing multifunctional products that support enterprise management. Through our printer brand “ECOSYS” and our multifunctional product brand “TASKalfa”, we have achieved a position that will allow us to provide customers with the best design for document environment problem resolutions, regardless of the office type. By following our philosophy of putting the customer first, it goes without saying that Kyocera Mita puts a great effort into being a good partner and always pleasing our customers.

We will ensure the satisfaction of our customers by pro-viding them with maximum value. This is the Kyocera Mita philosophy of “Customers First”. All of our employ-ees give their all. Regardless of the product or service, it is our people that make it happen. For this, Kyocera Mita must be the kind of company in which all employees pos-sess dreams, work hard, and realize all of the talent they possess. Our people are the heart of our company. By thinking sincerely about the customer, being diligent in one’s work, and creating high-quality products and solu-tions, all employees grow as people and offer new values to customers. In repeating this process, customers, em-ployees and shareholders grow along with the company. It is my wish that we continue to be this kind of company.

As a company that provides document imaging devices to the world, we often ask ourselves, how do we address our responsibilities to the world as manufacturers? Advanced technology is bringing great changes not only to business but also to the lives of individuals. However, through this evolu-tionary process human beings have come to place a great burden on the global environment. In present times, ecology has become well established into the global consciousness, but Kyocera Mita has been placing heavy emphasis on the global environment for some time now, and views this issue as a matter of social responsibility. In 1992, the first ECOSYS printer was released for sale. This printer did not require replacement of the drum or image developing parts during its lifetime and under normal operating conditions required only toner replacement. The word “ECOSYS” itself was coined to represent a three dimensional fusion of economy, ecology, and system. Kyocera Mita’s unique ECOSYS long-life technol-ogy is utilized in both our printers and multifunctional prod-ucts. Through the reduction of the disposal of interchange-able parts, economic value is realized by utilizing the benefits of minimized total cost and at the same time reduc-ing the burden on the global environment. We are working diligently to reduce environmental burden by developing

The Convergence of Kyocera Mita’s Various Technological Skills. First ECOSYS Printer

Continuing to create products that take account of the global environment ‒ in other words, the creation of ecological products is a great responsibility for us as a manufacturer . In the past , document imaging devices required regular maintenance in order to preserve their functionality. However, once desktop document imaging devices entered the market, maintenance-free products came into demand. Kyocera Mita’s unique long-life technology emerged to satisfy this demand. This technology was able to minimise the number of interchangeable parts and at the same time reduce the resource burden on the environment. This was the catalyst that led to the birth of ECOSYS. In 1986, Kyocera’s management group clearly stated that, “The environment will become an important consideration from now on”. In an age where the term “ecology” did not even exist in Japanese, the ECOSYS project was started. This was the origin of the “ECOSYS " philosophy. Since that time, this philosophy has led to the creation of products with a lifespan that was considered unthinkable at the time. For customers, longevity also means economy in terms of lower operating costs. For Kyocera Mita the name ECOSYS stands for the pride in knowing our products are trusted, and is the manifestation of our sense of responsibility to society.

ECOSYS CONCEPT

The evolution of technology and new eras always start by breaking through “conventional wisdom.” This is the position Kyocera Mita takes as a company, The “ECOSYS Technology,” which is manifested in our product line,

uses individual technologies to create new values for society. This is based on an understanding of the universal concept of the environment and,

as such, is very highly regarded.

Creating new values by breaking conventional wisdom is the basis of the ECOSYS concept.

Technology that uses ECOSYS at its core represents a completely new erain document imaging devices.

Kyocera Mita began to walk a unique path the moment it embraced high functionality as a core concept.

ECOSYS TECHNOLOGY

The technology that forms the core of ECOSYS is the amorphous silicon drum. Kyocera Mita was the first to utilize this drum in small business printers in place of the OPC drum type that had been used in printers and copiers up until that time. Compared to the OPC drum, which consumes surface resin at a fast pace, the hardness of amorphous silicon drums allow a lifespan 30 to 50 times longer. OPC drums require changing after 30,000 to 50,000 printed pages, whereas the amorphous silicon drum does not require changing until 300,000 to 500,000 pages of print. Because it is a “toner only” design it greatly reduces the effort and time required in the business world for changing parts. However, at that time amorphous silicon drums were only for large-format machines, and in making their use available for small-format business printers several issues had to be addressed. The development project was able to resolve these numerous issues and achieve commercialization of the product. What kept the project in high spirits were the decisive words of the management team: “The environment will become an important consideration from now on”. We want to provide our unique, superlative technology as was used in the amorphous silicon drum to as many people as possible in the form of our products. This line of thinking was connected to the release of the First ECOSYS Printer.

Kyocera Mita seeks to make consideration to the environment a reality by following three pillars. They are reuse, recycle, and reduce waste. We explained above how the use of amorphous silicon drums resulted in greater longevity and the reduction of part replacements. Also, we use many “subsets” in order to ensure the smooth removal and disassembly of reusable parts of the toner container and constituent parts of the prod-ucts. Our structural designs are carried out with the prerequisite of being reusable and recyclable, and almost all parts have their material names displayed on them. All packag-ing employs cardboard and newspaper as raw materials, and uses a pulp mold that is easy to reuse and recycle. It is my hope that we can be a company that meticulously collects everything that can be reused or recycled, and creates products reusing those materials in a cyclical manner.

Our unique ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit)

made superior color reproduction, high image quality and

stability in image processing technology a reality. ASIC uses

the technology developed by Kyocera Mita as its base, and

utilizes the newest image algorithms and control technolo-

gies for stability maintenance.

Universal Design that Seeks Ease-of-Use at the Office

We feel that our products must possess ease-of-use, functionality and flexibility regardless of the user. This is the thinking behind Kyocera Mita’s universal design. As these products are meant to be shared and used by multiple people, we are particular in all aspects of design and functionality, even in the small details. This in turn positively affects office work and business efficiency.

The area we are most particular about is the control panel. We use large color LCDs, and make the entire control panel dark blue. By writing the names of keys such as “Start” and “Stop” in white letters it creates contrast, and is easy to view. By arranging the keys in the order o f opera t ion , ease-of-use is accomplished. Furthermore the angle of the control panel can be adjusted from 15 to 35 degrees. The opening angle of the document processor (the two-sided manuscript automatic delivery apparatus) has been made limited, giving it the functionality of stopping at an angle at which persons in wheelchairs can easily access the opening.

Small particle diameter color toner has been developed to further improve image quality and produce high reso-lution images. Compared to previous types of toner, each particle is more fluid, allowing finer images, better color reproduction and printing that is both natural and beautiful. Further-more, low temperature adhesion was made possible, reducing energy consumption. This increased the convenience of the product in reducing warm-up times, at the same time a contribution to the environment was made through lessened electricity consumption.

The landmark ECOSYS series revised the style of document imaging devices byusing Kyocera Mita’s unique long-life technology. Behind the realization of this longevity are the continual challenges andconviction of our engineers, and the innovations they created. This is technology that vividly colors the history of document imaging devices; a technology that only Kyocera Mita could produce.

Approximately 30 Times the Durability A Challenge that Extends Beyond Longevity

TECHNOLOGY

Small Particle Diameter Color Toner Improves Image Quality and Environmental Functionality

The unique technology of THE INTERAC-TIVE TOUCH DOWN DEVELOPING SYSTEM combines the one-component develop-ing method’s high image quality tech-nology as established by the mono-chrome engine with the two-component developing method, which is advanta-geous in increasing product longevity. By utilizing the two-component method process of taking toner with developer mixed in and transcribing it onto a magnetic roller, with the one-component method’s mechanism of forming a thin film on the developing roller and making the toner “jump” to the photoconductor drum, a product with both high image quality and developing roller longevity was created.

THE INTERACTIVE TOUCH DOWN DEVELOPING SYSTEM increases color output speed and maintains high image quality

The technology that defines the heart of ECOSYS is the amorphous silicon drum. This photoreceptor drum has many mov-able and contacting parts. The central section, exposed to harsh abrasion, uses amorphous silicon, known for its extreme hardness. Compared to old-style OPC drums these drums have 30 times the durability. These are long-life printers and multifunctional products that require almost no drum replacements.A product with a totally new value has been born.

Preceding the completion of the R&D Center, a new plant

building was completed at the Tamaki Plant in February,

2008. Accompanying its completion, the Tamaki Plant

began concentrating operations as a Production Technology

Center, a Color Toner Development and Mass Production

Center, and as a plant that conducts trial manufacturing

support for all new products (concurrent manufacturing).

On one hand, the Hirakata Plant concentrates production

management operation functions. On the other hand, as

its central function this plant operates as a distribution

center for maintenance parts.

The Hirakata Plant ceaselessly supplies, to Japan and the

world, maintenance parts required by the market in a

timely manner. Furthermore, as a base for environmental

improvement, the Hirakata Plant seeks to achieve optimal

thoroughness in recycling and reusing. Personnel, regarded

as masters of their f ield for their skills and knowledge,

conduct the product recycling/reusing process. They have a

role that is similar to that of a surgical doctor because they

take each individual part from the document imaging

devices, which is collected from our customers, and accu-

rately judge its durability and ability to be recycled.

The motto of the China, Shilong Plant is “Become a top class

Chinese plant through collective group effort”. They are advanc-

ing a production innovation project based off of an innovation

of the “cell production method” which has been used in

domestic plants. This “group cell method” has been introduced as

a new production method. The group cell method entails divid-

ing a single product into several units, the production pro-

cess of which is conducted by ten-member teams known as

“group cells”. Planning productivity and quality improve-

ment and at the same time raising individual skills and

occupational ability levels was an issue that was faced. By

taking a manufacturing structure that uses group units we

aim to improve motivation as well as instill awareness that

individual skill increases are connected to productivity

increases in the entire group.

Engaging in the production of goods necessitates the use of

energy. At every plant, we have minimized energy consump-

tion, reduced CO2 output, and worked to give maximum con-

sideration to the environment. Our efforts are not limited to

simply turning off the office lights at lunch time and relaxing

dress rules during the summertime, but also proactive efforts

such as power generation with wall-mounted solar panels

(Hirakata Plant). Another innovative process we have devel-

oped is to use electricity to freeze water overnight and mini-

mize its waste materials in order to avoid releasing waste

water from our plant. We then reuse the remaining cold water

to air condition the plant. These are all enterprise activities

conducted as part of our great responsibility to society.

Through the production of goods, every person at Kyocera

Mita will continue to give consideration toward low-energy

consumption solutions and the environment.

Further Clarify the Strengths of Each PlantMaximizing Manufacturing Power by Concentrating the Intelligence of All

Manufacturing Policy

In March of 2008, the 20 story KYOCERA MITA R&D Center

was completed at the Global Headquarters.

In recent years, environment responsiveness and security

measures to protect against information leaks has been in

demand in regards to document machines such as printers

and multifunctional products connected to the company’s

information system. The strengthening of the development

of products with the latest equipment is imperative in order

to address office needs. The R&D Center is also a major

investment intended to realize an increase in the speed of

technological development.

With the completion of the R&D center came great changes

to the roles of domestic plants. The functionality of these

plants as production technology centers was strengthened.

Through the further clarification of the role of each plant,

including the Tamaki Plant which supports China, the

Hirakata Plant which concentrates on control and pro-

duction management operations, and the China Plant

which specializes in maximizing productive power, the

production of highly trustworthy products was further

strengthened.

Environmental Kindness and the Economy are the Origin Points for Development at Kyocera MitaAs we are involved in the manufacturing of goods, the pursuit of new technological capabilities is a matter of course. However, the advance of technology does not end with the addition ofnew functions or the improvement of abilities. The products that we must produce minimize burden on the environment, and are economical to the user. Those are the origin points from which development begins at Kyocera Mita. The products of Kyocera Mita are the embodiment of the desire to do what one can for the future and realize the wishes of customers.

Being Particular in Regards to the Customer’s Office Environment:The Thorough Pursuit of Silent Design

Silent Room

Reducing a product’s operational noise even by a single decibel (dB) requires an incredible amount of effort. In particular, in the case of multifunctional products that are often used beside one’s desk, the realization of a non-disruptive level of operational noise was a major issue. The number of places to be improved numbered about 30, and included the intake and exhaust method of the fan, the high-speed rotation polygon mirror in the LSU*, the drive section of the main unit, and the alteration of exterior components. In making these improvements, we were able to achieve levels five decibels (dB) quieter when compared to prior machines.

Developer’s Statement

LCA ana l y se s t he env i ronmen ta l impac t o f t he consumption and emissions of a product by examining its life cycle (Resource Extraction→Material Manufacturing→Product Manufacturing→Distribution→Use→Disposal), and evaluates the environmental burden in terms of a numerical value. In doing this the environmental burden can be examined in each stage of the product’s life cycle, or in the life cycle as a whole.

Kyocera Mita has acquired the “Ecoleaf Environmental Label”, which uses the LCA method. This is a fact we proudly make public. Furthermore, inside the company an environmental information data accumulation system has been constructed to implement LCA, and Ecoleaf System Certification has been obtained. Currently, the environmental burden of newly developed prod-ucts is evaluated at each stage of the life cycle using environmental data collected by this environmental information database. 【Evaluation Example】

Graph 1 and Graph 2 show the global warming burden of products LS-2020D and LS-2000D over the course of their life-cycles.

【Longevity Design Evaluation】Comparing Graphs 1 and 2, the printing speed of the evaluated product LS-2020D is 35 pages per minute, a speed increase of 1.2 times over the 30 page per minute print speed of LS-2000D. In contrast with the 1.4 times increase in the lifetime printed pages count, the increase in efficiency in regards to global warming burden produced in the stages excluding product “use”, which is to say “material manufacturing”, “product manufacturing”, “distribution” and “disposal” stages is smaller at 1.1 times. In this manner the longevity design effectiveness of LS-2020D can be evaluated.

【Usage Stage ‒ Electricity Consumption Evaluation】In contrast to the 1.2 times increase in print speed and 1.4 times increase in the lifetime printed pages count, the global warming burden from electricity consumption factors- largest component of global warming burden during the “use” phase- is increased by 1.3 times. The environmental burden based on electricity consumption of LS-2020D can thus be evaluated as equivalent to LS-2000D.

【Use Phase- Toner Consumption Evaluation】Global warming burden due to toner consumption is rated at 1.3 times, compared to a 1.4 times increase in lifetime printed pages count. From this, the global warming burden due to toner consumption can be seen as almost equal.

Kyocera Mita uses these kinds of evaluation results as feedback for the design and production departments, and the results are used to strive to create products which create less of a burden on global warming.

At Kyocera Mita a product environmental data accumula-tion system has been constructed, which is used to conduct LCA evaluations of products. The LCA results of new prod-ucts are then compared to those of previous products. Here we present an example of this.

At Kyocera Mita, product packaging

design is performed in-house. Our

efforts during the development of

packaging focus on reducing the

environmental burden that results from

using wasteful packaging materials.

Designers intimately familiar with the

construction of our products and

distribution channels design and

evaluate our packaging. In doing this we

are able to accomplish many things: the

thorough suppression of environmental

burden, the strength required for

transport and to guard against impact

shocks, stability when the packaging is open, as well as ease of

use in the real world environment. All of this is done to ensure

that customers are pleased when the product reaches them.

Through these efforts we were recognized by the WPO (World

Packaging Organization) with a World Star Award for our

single-cardboard toner container packaging. Our universal

design is well received not only for reducing environmental

burden, but also for having a design that reduces

material use in the packaging process, allows easy

opening and simple removal of the product.

Europe is the area of the world where many of the most

powerful soccer nations are located. Among these teams

Spain is considered to be among the greatest of the world’s

pro-leagues. In July 2006 Kyocera Mita concluded an advertising

sponsorship contract with the famous Madrid club team,

Atlético de Madrid. This club is known for its more than two

million enthusiastic fans. Established in 1903, it has won the

Spain League nine times, the European Cup, as well as the

International Championship. We hope to see them win the

domestic title as well as rank first in international competition.

At present, in addition to players’ uniforms, the Kyocera logo

is used on practice uniforms, on the playing field, on the

website and in club magazines.

As part of our activities to contribute to society, we donated to

Mie Prefecture the money necessary to purchase a manuscript

of extreme cultural significance. The “Suketsunebon Saiku

Nyogoshu” is a collection of poetry recited by Emperor

Murakami’s queen, Yoshiko. The manuscript was written in

the Kamakura period by Fujiwara no Suketsune, a direct

descendent of Fujiwara no Teika. One volume of this manu-

script was missing and was not designated an Important

Cultural Asset, but through the investigation of the Saiku

Historical Museum the lost volume was located. The manu-

script, being approximately 770 years old, is severely deterio-

rated and cannot be displayed. A copy was made which is part

of the permanent exhibition at the Saiku Historical Museum.

Kyocera Mita America received the Technologies and Com-

modities Category Award at the 2008 Evergreen Awards. The

Evergreen Awards were established in 1998 by the United

States Government’s General Services Administration (GSA)

Integrated Workplace Acquisition Center (IWAC). These

awards are given to companies that are good models to other

companies, in recognition of proactive engagement in enter-

prise activities designed to reduce waste and recycle in con-

sideration of the environment. This is the second time Kyoc-

era Mita has won this award, the first being in 2005. We also

won the 2008 Industry Green Contractor EIP Award

(Excellence in Partnership Award). This award recognizes

companies that provide products that are kind to the environ-

ment, and have contributed most to the environment in the

areas of manufacturing process and business management. It

is said that the Industry Green Contractor Award is the most

competitive category of EIP awards.

Recognizing the technology of the ECOSYS

printer and our efforts towards resolving

environmental issues, Kyocera Mita was

elected the Environmental Company of

the Year at the Microscope Awards for

Channel Excellence (ACE). In addition to our

efforts in regard to environmental issues,

we were also deemed to have made achievements that set a

good example to other companies; an evaluation that was

connected to our receiving this award.

Kyocera Mita’s Document Solutions Support the Ever-Evolving

Business Network

Through the advance of IT technology,

document imaging devices such as printers and multifunctional products also advance.

This is not a technological requirement ; rather it is to respond to

the changing needs and diversification of customers’ businesses.

Presently, printers and multifunctional products are

not simply machines to be used in the limited confines of

an office- it can be said they are core tools

that connect businesses to each other.

Changing Business through Documents

The advent of each person having a personal computer

has brought great changes to the office and to the busi-

ness environment. As business has speed up, smooth and

speedy printers and multifunctional products have come

into demand. Products too have evolved, addressing

more advanced needs such as the quality and accuracy of

pictures, graphs and graphics processed on computers.

Another large change is the network.Today, regardless of

industry, business moves through the networking of the

work of individuals via computers. In this kind of environ-

ment, we are expected to provide new valuable tools in

the form of “document solutions” for customers’ busi-

nesses. The greatest characteristic of ECOSYS is its long-

life technology, which is recognized across the globe for

providing the tremendous value of business continuity. In

Germany, consciousness regarding the environment is

high. Germany was one of the first places to recognize in

our products the high durability which leads to reduced

waste and robustness which leads to cost effectiveness.

Sales in Germany have been strong as a result. Kyocera

Mita’s document solutions support the evolution of busi-

ness on a global scale.

Kyocera started as a small, suburban factory, with no money,

credentials or history. We had nothing to rely on but a little technology

and 28 trusty comrades. Consequently, Kyocera’s management

became based on everyone exerting their maximum efforts, and

managers dedicating their lives to earning the employees’ trust ̶ all

believing in each other, abandoning selfish motives, and feeling

fortunate to work for the company. All employees ultimately united to

make Kyocera a company they could be proud to work for. Human

minds are said to be easily changeable. Yet, there is nothing stronger

than the human mind. Kyocera became what it is today because it is

based on a bond of human minds.
