Multilingual Communication Support
at Medical Reception
In medical field, there are many problems with communication
between foreign patients and staff members.
To solve these problems, we developed systems which support
multilingual communication in medical field and help foreign
patients. The system, M3 (M cube), has been introduced in
Kyoto City Hospital, Kyoto University Hospital, and Rakuwa-kai
Otowa Hospital, and it is used to support dialog with parallel
texts. We also provide M3 on the Web and for mobile devices to
support non-Japanese speakers before they come to hospitals.

―Supporting Foreign Patients Using Parallel Text―
To support foreign patients in the medical field, we have developed, M3, which is a multilingual medical
reception support tool. We have provided M3 on the Web and for mobile devices, which are designed to
help the patients to fill out medical interview sheets at home. Puchi-tsu also supports dialog in hospitals.
The systems uses 363 parallel texts for medical interview, for each supported language.
The systems get parallel texts for dialog from the Language Grid to accurately support communication.

2007- Pangaea started a multilingual BBS for Japanese, English, Korean, Malay, and
German to support communication between facilitators. Pangaea also provided a
community dictionary (6 languages, 1,605 terms) and “Picton”, which are pictograms for
intercultural communication. 【Adult ⇔ Adult 】
International Communication between Children
using ICT Beyond Differences of Languages and Cultures
NPO Pangaea built an ICT environment called “Universal Playground”, which enables children all over
the world to overcome various barriers of languages, distance and cultures so that they can feel
connected with each other. NPO Pangaea is challenging new issues in ICT/multilingual/intercultural
fields for youths based on a 8 years of experience.

This project is supported by the Toyota Foundation
“Asian Neighbors Program” (2008-2010), which aims
at providing a search system that enables all users
throughout Japan, to share various school
documents. Moreover, the project provides
multilingual schedule creation tool and multilingual
chatting systems. Since April 2011, The
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology Japan has been operating the successor
of this site, Casta-net (http://www.casta-net.jp/ ).

Multilingual Support for Education Project
●In this project, school glossary that
covers eight languages (Japanese,
Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish,
Tagalog, English, Thai) are created for
the schedule creation tool. According
to Ministry of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology of
Japan, the eight languages cover the
native languages of 95% foreign
students in Japan. Using the glossary,
multilingual schedule can be easily
created on the Web (see the figure on
the left). The glossary with 814 items is
currently provided as a language
resource on the Language Grid.
●Moreover, the two chatting systems
provided by this project use translation
services on the Language Grid.

Collaborative Disaster Prevention Education
for Children Around the World
The Natural Disaster Youth Summit was first organized in Hyogo
and started from September 2004 ,commemorating the 10th
anniversary of the great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. It is a year-
round project in which children learn how to cope with natural
disasters through communication and collaboration with global
friends. The 2010 summit was held in Turkey and attracted 300
participants. We present a practical program, creating disaster
safety maps in international conferences, and practice the
collaborative learning using ICT as well.

CoSMOS is a collaborative learning support system that can publish disaster safety maps drawn by
children on the Internet and can assist the users in communicating using pasted notes and BBS. Currently,
32 maps from 18 countries are presented in the system. Posted messages and comments can be
automatically translated into five languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, French and Turkish) by using the
Language Grid.

Language Barrier-Free Room
We built a "Language Barrier-Free Room" for
supporting foreign students in multilingual lectures and
communication. Foreign students often have difficulties
in understanding the jargon included in lectures. We
operate a system that supports foreign students taking
lectures held in Japanese.
Moreover, we are creating a multilingual community
space, where foreign students and Japanese students
are able to communicate with each other in Second Life
and in the real world.

When a lecturer gives his/her lecture in
Japanese, both screens display a summary.
The summary is used in two lectures in
Japanese - “Japanese Situation” and
“JAPAN STUDY”. About 30 foreign students
including Chinese, American, French and
Malaysian attend these lectures.

Specialized Translation Service
One of the problems in translation is that community-
oriented words and expressions are difficult to
translate. For example, “百万遍 (Hyakumanben)*” is
mistranslated to “One million times” by other
translators as opposed to the correct “Hyakumanben”
by “KYODAI Honyaku!” In KYODAI Honyaku! , custom
dictionary entries are included by machine translators
to give better translation results. We have deployed
“KYODAI Honyaku!” service on the Kyoto University
Co-op Site from February 10, 2011.

More than 15,000 Japanese and English dictionary entries containing expression related to Kyoto University
are registered in community dictionaries, including Kyoto University building names, subject names of Liberal
Arts and General Education Courses, general affairs expressions, etc. Also, there are more than 5,000
Chinese (Simplified, Traditional) and Korean entries, which are continuously added. Therefore, the
composition of the dictionary and translation services enable highly accurate translation on subjects related
to Kyoto University.

Parallel Text
More than 2,000 sentences containing
expressions related to Kyoto University
are registered, which are used to train
KyotoEBMT developed by Kurohashi
Laboratory, Kyoto University to
increase the quality of the translations.
KyotoEBMT is an example-based
machine translation. It learns from
parallel texts and gives high-quality
translation results if an input sentence
is similar to the given parallel texts.

Supporting Multilingual Communication
between Foreign and Japanese Students
This site aims to provide an environment enabling
multilingual communication between foreign and
Japanese students. By sharing multilingual information on
both school and daily life among different cultures, this
site proves to be helpful and beneficial for both parties.
Currently there are 136 registered users in total. From this
autumn, the activity will be expanded to involve more
individuals and associations.

Discussion function is used to support foreign students attending Japanese lectures or group
discussions among Japanese students. By posting messages on the machine translation supported
G30 community site, Japanese students can paraphrase lecture contents to foreign students. Such
contributions help foreign students to catch up with Japanese lectures. Currently over 18,276 entries
related to Kyoto University and Informatics have been registered into dictionaries and are available for
use. Multilingual BBS is used to share information of both school and daily lives.

Multilingual Environment for Wikimedia
In Wikipedia, the number of articles in different language versions
differs greatly. To increase the amount of articles in smaller
Wikipedias, there is a need to increase and support translation
activities in Wikipedia.
We developed a multilingual BBS using the Language Grid
optimized for Wikimedia Foundation, which supports multilingual
discussions between non-native translators and native speakers.
