TOKAIDO SHINKANSEN. NOTAS. Roberto Mollá
Kioto, 15:56
no sepas –añade-.
Setsuki: Theodor Pilz, C. Kraft y Juan Cuéllar.
18:33 Shinagawa.

TOKAIDO SHINKANSEN. NOTES. Roberto Mollá
Kyoto, 15:56
I think that with some nicotine gum, I will be able to survive the three-hour trip to Tokyo, until the 18:40
train. If not, then I will stop over in Shinagawa at 18:33. After that, a quick dinner with the people from
Setsuki Kisco, hand in the work, hit the futon and a 50 mg. Myolastan.
Nagoya, 16:33
I read the e-mail from Cavalryman Sable again where he tells me that the traditional exhibition methods
have suffered profound changes. The role of the artist –he states-, the artwork, the space, the institu -
tion, the patronage, and their territory have mutated and become entangled, as you know, to the point
where on occasion, they have become unrecognizable, undecipherable. For this reason –the
Cavalryman writes- we must organize exhibits which conquer absolutely new concepts, which will
translate and map this space. Nothing that you don’t already know –he added-.
From time to time, I participate in the projects by Cavalryman Sable and the Star Organizers, Inc. who
have borrowed their name from a Cartoon series in the Eighties. In reality, the entire company’s acti-
vities are founded on what they borrow or directly usurp.
Hamamatsu, 17:09
My reflection in the window is translucent, barely visible during the fleeting instants in which the back-
ground is darkened. Countless rooftops, bamboo forests, and industrial smoke stacks undulate and
divide the horizon under a steel sky.
Organized by Setsuki Kisco Plastic Products by means of Cavalryman Sable, I travel, a thousand years
later in the opposite direction, a route that leads to Madame Sarashina in Kyoto. Now, the electrical
pylons are the mute witnesses of these ancient stories of old.
With a clumsy movement of my arm as I search for my camera in the backpack, I moisten a shirt slee-
ve with Kirin beer, the one with the dragon.
Shizuoka, 17:36
There is smoothness in this trip, a sleepless drowsiness, a two-dimensional and rhythmic landscape
which seems like it has been painted on a giant acetate, which seems to repeat itself in an infinite loop.
Mishima, 17:55
On the laptop, I review the photos which Setsuki commissioned to me for the exhibit devised by
Cavalryman Sable. I have not managed to photograph the entire list of temples, neon lights, and bays
that appear in the specific works of his private collection, a collection whose main theme is the
Japanese landscape. The Cavalryman’s idea was attractive but not too original; it involved confronting
the photographic image of space with its pictorial representation.
My assignment was limited to the work by three Occidental artists whose art work forms a part of the
Setsuki Collection: Theodor Pilz, C. Kraft, and Juan Cuéllar.
By Pilz, I have only been able to locate the tea house which appears, barely insinuated, in a tiny illegible
watercolour. With Kraft, there was no problem; the love-hotels which are featured in his canvasses
continue to be active in their lucrative functioning. I was able to locate everything by Cuéllar except his
view of Mt. Fuji, undoubtedly imagined, and the interior of a seedy nightclub for which the only refe-
rence I have is the bartender’s skills. Cuéllar has written me that he does not remember if he has been
in Shinjuku or Asakusa, but he could have spent hours watching the barman crush ice.
Shin Yokohama, 18:21
I mentally review the postponement request which I will present to Setsuki Kisco Plastic Products tonight
in order to complete my work. Living from one small job to the next, I have lived in Tokyo since 1994.
Was Rosita Chen the girl that just appeared on that screen? At this speed, it is difficult to confirm this.
The station’s platform is packed. The city, nervous. 18:33 Shinagawa.
