FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL

Over half-way through the month of May, which now leaves 27 school days

remaining until break up day on Friday, 24th June. I also remind you now that

Thursday, 16th June is a Public Holiday and Friday, 17th June has also been

declared a school holiday, which will allow for a long weekend from the

Wednesday. Please note though that there are rugby fixtures versus Trinity

House from Johannesburg on that Wednesday afternoon. I also remind all Dads of the Father’s

Day Assembly at 07h45 on that morning of Wednesday, 15th June.

STAFF NEWS:

I inform you that, I in my capacity as Sharks Primary Schools Rugby Chairman will be co-

ordinating the Inter-District festival for the Provincial Trials this Thursday and Friday, here in

Durban. The following week I will accompany the selected Sharks Primary Schools teams to the

Inter Provincial tournament in Bloemfontein for Thursday and Friday. Please note that whilst I am

away on official schools/provincial duty that the school will be under the direction of our

Deputies, Mr Naidoo and Mrs van der Walt. Thank you.

MOTHER’S AND CHILD EVENING

This event was held last Wednesday evening in our Pre-Primary. It was a roaring success with

probably our biggest attendance recorded. Congratulations Mothers on this fantastic turn-out

and wonderful spirit noted through your participation with your child. My sincere appreciation and

vote of thanks go to all the staff members involved, as well as our ‘captain’ of the team, Mrs Lynn

Mason, for a superb and memorable evening. It was so encouraging to see the smiling faces of our

‘little people’ enjoying an evening here with Mom. A proudly Fairways/Northlands event!

NPS U9 RUGBY/NETBALL FESTIVAL

Congratulations to our Rugby and Netball teams who excelled in their efforts at our own festival

hosted here last Friday evening, which catered for 15 rugby teams and 12 netball teams. The field

was packed with enthusiastic coaches, staff and respective school supporters, which really added

to the excitement of the evening. We, as the hosts, can take a bow for the outstanding attention

to detail noted in our hosting arrangements, namely catering, officiating, presentation of the

fields, smooth running of the programme, staff involvement in all areas, etc. The spotlight must

also fall directly onto our JP Sports Co-Ordinator, Miss Murch, for her dedicated service noted in

the planning beforehand and the overall running of the event, as well as to Mr Boucher, George and

the Grounds Staff for the layout and presentation of our facilities.

A very proudly Northlands event!

JP SPEECH AND DRAMA

Next week highlights one of the most important annual events on our Year Planner – the Speech

and Drama week where all Junior Primary classes present a class Choral Verse and selected

individual items to the Adjudicator from the Speech and Drama Society. Our results have always

been of the highest level and I again look forward to our combined standards of excellence

throughout each grade and the JP phase. Final practising and preparations are taking place, but

please share with your child the value and important role that he/she is required to play in their

class or individual efforts. Public Speaking and the confidence and “team-work” involved in events

like this are again of paramount importance at our school in developing our children in all areas.

Best wishes to all the learners, staff and parents for the week, as well as to Mrs Watling, the

overall co-ordinator for the JP Speech and Drama festival. Please note that the Speech and

Drama morning of presenting selected items, as well as each Choral Verse per grade, will take

place for you to enjoy on:

Tuesday 7th June

08h00 – Grade 1

09h00 – Grade 2

10h30 – Grade 3

Mrs Brown (JP HOD) will send more information shortly.

FROM THE DESK OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

LATE COMING

Instances of late coming have been on a sharp increase over the past week.

Learners arriving late for school are detained in the Barbara Franken hall for

the first half hour. The onus is on the learner to catch up on the missed lesson.

The learner serves a further break detention for being late for three times or more.

Please ensure that your child presents himself/herself at school by not later than 07h20 so that

he/she can be settled for the start of the school day. Your co-operation in this matter is

appreciated.

SCHOOL SAFETY AND DRUG AWARENESS PRESENTATION

The school safety and drug awareness presentation by the South African Police (Durban North

Branch) will be held as follows:

Date: Thursday 26th May 2016

Venue: Barbara Franken Hall

Time: 18h00

All parents are most welcome to attend as the information shared will be most informative.

Please note that this evening is for adults only.

Mr C Naidoo

GIRL’S DRESS CODE:

There are a number of our girls with very short dresses. Thank you to the

parents who have responded to dress code letters by taking down the hems of

their daughter’s dresses. Please note that dresses may be worn just above the knee or on the

knee.

There will be ongoing uniform inspections to ensure that all learners are neatly turned out, at all

times.

U9 SPORTS FESTIVAL

We had a huge number of players and their families playing and supporting on Friday evening. My

thanks go to Miss Murch for successfully co-ordinating the function.

MID-YEAR STANDARDISED TESTING

Our mid-year tests begin with the Grade 7’s next week. I urge all of our senior primary learners

to make this testing time a priority. Early preparation in all learning areas will ensure a positive

outcome.

MOTHER AND CHILD EVENING 2016 –

Thank you so much to every mum and child who came to enjoy the evening with us. We loved seeing

the special interactions and time spent creating something together. The items made, were lovely

and we hope they will be treasured as a memory of precious time together. Thank you for all the

eats, and the laughter. We really appreciate the positive feedback we received from many of you

as well.

ACADEMIC REPORT

Although there is only one week left before the

commencement of exams, there has been no

slowing down with regards to work being done in

class.

Unfortunately, there seem to be numerous bugs being spread through the school, with both

learners and teachers falling victim to them. If your child is showing any signs of not feeling

well, please medicate ASAP in order to prevent absenteeism from school. In the event of your

children being away from school, please remind them to speak to the teachers on their return

to find out what work has been missed. This especially applies to subjects which are taught by

any specialist teacher, other than the class-teacher. It is difficult for a specialist teacher to

keep up with all the children that are absent in various classes and ensure that they have all

the work that was missed for the days that they were absent.

I hope that the preparations for exams are going well, with study timetables that were

planned being followed every day, ensuring that your children are adequately prepared in order

to achieve to the best of their ability.

learners in the top 10 finalists, let’s see if we can do even better in 2016. The school with the

most entries will win a bench from Ekhaya Interior and Exterior concepts.

http://www.spcadbn.org.za/index.asp.

SAVE THE DATE for the next CPF Nite walk/run taking place on 29 July, entries are now open.

Thank you to those enthusiasts for sending their entries in already. Please send an email to

Good luck to our staff, teachers, learners and parents who are participating in the East Coast

Please send in details of any learners who are taking part in order for us to acknowledge their

achievements in Assembly on Friday.

Orders for class, individual and sibling photos from Prestige via the school closed on Friday.

Should you wish to place an order kindly contact Prestige directly via their website on

www.prestigemoments.co.za.

Please email me on [email protected] should your child/ren have excelled at any

activity outside of school so we can take a photo and acknowledge their achievements.

From time to time photographs are taken of pupils as a record of school life, sporting activities

and special achievements. These images are used for various purposes such as local press

submissions, internal posters, the school Facebook page, website etc. Should you have any

objections to your child being photographed for these purposes, please email

[email protected] or alternatively contact Mrs V McAvoy on 031 5642369.

Thank you for the ongoing support that our bread tags initiative receives. It seems at least once

a week we are receiving large quantities of tags which is heart-warming and they are so

appreciated. The collection of bread tags by the Pre Primary and Main school is an ongoing

initiative. Please send in any bread tags to Mrs Winter at reception. Every tag counts and the

more we receive the more people we are able to assist in obtaining wheel chairs.

Please contact me on [email protected] should you wish to apply for a MySchool

or Makro card or to link your existing cards. The process is a simple one and applications for

MySchool can be made via a digital application form. Alternatively please send me an email and I

will apply on your behalf. Fundraising without the work. Northlands Primary received close to R

7000 from Makro recently, all you need to do is ensure your existing card is linked to the School

initiative. If you are unsure please contact me via email.
