THOUGHTS ON COMPLETING MY FIRST YEAR AS PRESIDENTOF THE LOS ANGELES CHAPTER OF THE CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPISTS
"Dear Members, Friends and Colleagues,"
The above salutation is how I started all my emails in my campaignsto rebuild LA-CAMFT. In a last ditch attempt to try to stay the plan tohand back our charter to CAMFT, an emergency meeting was calledon February 8, 2009. At that meeting, I reluctantly agreed to take on
the leadership role of interim president only if a few key players at that meeting wouldagree to join me on the board. I then arranged a series of breakfast meetings with brightbusy successful MFT's with great leadership qualities and persuaded them to join the mission of revitalizing the Los Angeles Chapter.
I wanted to create a broader base of leadership, so I arranged with CAMFT to utilize their2,100 Los Angeles members email list to call for a meeting on February 22. We filled thecommunity room at Exodus Recovery Center and while eating lox, bagels and fruit, laidout our plans for the revival of the Los Angeles chapter. I agreed to end my "interim" status and to make a commitment to those gathered in that room and to the communityof therapists in the Los Angeles area to take on the role of president for a two-year term.A vote was called and the community accepted my offer.
I laid out the beginnings of my vision of LA-CAMFT as a community-wide gathering place,a village for a broad range of clinicians with warm, welcoming interactive meetings. Thevision also included a broad range of committees and special interest groups meeting atvarious locations throughout Los Angeles. A lot of excitement and hope was created andwe were on our way. Soon, an active and dedicated Board of Directors was formed andwe elected officers for an Executive Board and created our first sets of committees andSpecial Interest groups.
The model for our distinctive interactive monthly networking presentations was createdby Lynne Azpeitia and Karen Wulfson and honed by the AAMFT Santa Monica-WLANetworking Group core leadership team, of which I was a founding member. That modelwas based on the concept that the community gathering and the process, not the presenter, was the event. Featured in that concept along with the educational presentationwere; greeters at the door, trained hosts to lead introductions and facilitate conversations ateach table, welcoming statements and information of professional community interests, informal networking while sharing food and formal table networking exercises thatemphasized in-depth personal sharing, community provided literature displays, 30 secondverbal announcements from participants and fun prize awarding drawings.
We held our first sold out meeting in a fabulous new location 33 days later and createdthe first joint venture between a CAMFT chapter and an AAMFT networking group 30days after that. We then moved to an outside patio to allow more seating and proceededto sell out the next five monthly meetings. In August, we held a community-wide celebration of our success at a fun Beach Bash, launched our revised website and finished2009 with a warm and cheerful Holiday Pot-luck Celebration.
In January 2010, we held our largest gathering yet, with 140 attendees, our Februarymeeting was a great success and in March, we are holding our first 6 hours Legal andEthical Workshop.

PAGE 2 LA THERAPIST UPDATE MARCH/APRIL 2010
I never liked long lists of names bundled into thank you messages from grateful Presidents, but we are all amazingly indebted to the 136 members and friends of LA-CAMFT who have voluntarily sacrificed hours andhours of time and energy to create the miracle rebirth of our chapter. That is a huge number. More than half ofour membership is actively building and growing our chapter. We changed the name of the Volunteer Committeeand it is now called the Involvement Opportunity Committee. Clearly, it is an opportunity and a privilege to be anactive partner of an enlivened, energetic and inspired village.
I began the year with 40 members, a resigned and exhausted remnant of a Board, no committees, and no eventsscheduled. We finished the year with over 285 members, over a dozen established and energetic committees, aninteractive website, and a beautiful home for our sold out warm and welcoming monthly networking presentations.
I can't wait to see what lies ahead.

Networks and Belonging By Sietze Vanderheide
t LA-CAMFT there is frequentuse of the word networking.Networks are more thanplaces to meet a few peopleand get referrals. Networksarise as a counter-ballast to
overwhelming cultural complexity andhelp us meet our needs for findingmeaning and affiliation.
In a postmodern world there is a lack ofmeaning and purpose. Writing nearlythree decades ago, Jean-FrancoisLyotard and Frederic Jameson describeda world in which science and historyno longer offer any absolute truth. Each person was therefore left to create their own truth. This process left a cultural vacuum in which peoplesuffer from apathy and a feeling ofmeaningless alienation.
At the same time that postmodernismwas developing, there was also thedevelopment of the information age,the hallmark of which is the internet. This massive source of interconnectivityhas allowed for the development ofsocial-networking though Facebook,Twitter, and Linked-In, to name only afew.
In the face of the information overloadcreated by the information age and the feeling of alienation and apathy of the postmodern condition, peoplehave begun to form self-defining networks. John Bowlby and manyother attachment theorists describehuman nature as fundamentally tied toa sense of belonging. This human needfor affiliation drives the current socialnetworking culture and offers an antidote to feelings alienation andmeaninglessness.
LA-CAMFT has grown enormously thislast year because it is a developing socialnetwork. In the face of informationoverload and the postmodern condition, isolation is not the answer; rather, belonging and communitarianismoffers an opportunity to create meaning and purpose.

t was a gloriously beautiful Southern Californiawinter day, and what better way to spend it thanwith colleagues new and known at our January LA-CAMFT, SM-WLA- AAMFT Networking Brunch?Featured speaker, and Billy Joel stand-in (his joke notmine) Dr. Bill Saleebey, followed announcements by
the usual cast of characters, including Programming Chair andMaster of Ceremonies, Lynne Azpeitia along with SpeakerSelection Co-Chair Bunni Dybnis, providing the introduction. Dr. Saleebey's presentation from his new book, followed by Q & A indeed "Connect: Beyond the Name Tag" with an over-capacity crowd of some 140 participants.
A "Dynamic Presentation," as promised, pinpointed no less than20 "key networking tips," including "listening more than youspeak," "establishing a relationship," and "being both interestedand interesting," to name just three. Audience members exploredthe topic of social networking and confidence boosting with Dr.Saleebey to finish upthe 30 minute talk.Based on the amountof buzz generated by Dr. Saleebey's discussion, and coffeeno doubt, the majorityof participants hungaround even more thanusual (well after thedrawing).
I certainly walked away feeling full (notjust from the delicious brunch) of ideas
and supported by a vibrant community of successful practitioners. Networking tips were being applied in-vivoand en-mass as the crowd passed on information aboutworkshops, programs, process groups, technology, intern-ships, office space and consultations. Applying Dr.Saleebey's foursteps of "know, like, trust, and refer" Ioverheard severalactive "connections"tak ing p lace, leaving nametagsfar in the distance.
Integrating thesubject of Dr. Saleebey's talk with LA-CAMFT PresidentJonathan Flier's networking exercise, based on his extensivework with "The Way of the Council" Native Americanapproach to discussion, allowed everyone to delve deeper.Applying the idea of breadth and depth to discussingchallenges and solutions to networking issues, participantsshared personal experiences. The hard work by the LA-CAMFT and SM-WLA- AAMFT Board and staff memberswas apparent, with yet another successful and profession-
building brunch. All aspects of the meeting -announcements, discussions, presentations, giftsand materials made it an enriching experience. Abeautiful setting and conscientious wait staff atthe Beverly Hills Country Club didn't hurt either.Thank you LA-CAMFT and SM-WLA- AAMFT!

s an intern, I look to supervision for many things: mentoring, coaching, support, cheerleaders, guides, and for someone who is excited about the professionand the work. Ok, so maybe I’m asking too much! Icame to the field of psychotherapy later in life after
having a few different careers. I worked full-time for most of mylife and, along the way, I learned to recognize a good managerversus one that is not so good. There were jobs that I loved, butthe management made my work hell. I learned that managerscan do their job well, but that does not necessarily mean theycan manage people. The same applies to supervision. You can bea great therapist, but that does not mean you can be a keenmentor or be a dedicated supervisor. It doesn’t mean that aftertaking a 2-hour course, you are ready and excited to supervise. It’s like teaching. We’ve all had terrible teachers and we’ve all, hopefully, had instructors who made us feel inspired and excitedabout what we were learning.
Personally, I look to supervision to teach me how to be a better therapist. I look tosupervision to challenge me as a therapistand to encourage me to explore my countertransference issues, my fear, andother blocks that get in the way of mebeing a great therapist. I have not racked up thousands of dollars in student loans tobe an ok therapist: I want to be a greattherapist. I spend many hours researchingand learning when I’m faced with a newpsychological challenge. I love thought-provoking articles and discussions aboutnew research whether it is about new discoveries concerning brain-based psychotherapy, art therapy or mind/bodyapproaches.
So what do we as interns need to look forin supervision? It will be different for every-one. I suggest you make your own list. Hereis what I have come up with:
• I recommend interviewing potential supervisors as much as they interview us.
• Write a list of questions and concerns and discuss them during the interview.
• Look hard at what you want supervision to look like.
• Be clear and honest with yourself about your pet-peeves: Are you a time fanatic who gets frustrated when supervision is canceled or starts late? Or does supervision end before you’ve had a chance to share your case? Do you like being micro-managed?
• Is your supervision time going to be time well spent? • Can you reach your supervisor on the weekends?• Do you feel safe with your supervisor? • Do you and your supervisor’s styles match?• Does the supervisor’s therapeutic approach match yours?• Does your supervisor have something to teach you?• Will they help you with paperwork?• Do they like being a supervisor?• Ask yourself: What do I really need and want from supervision?
Depending on where your internship is, many more questionswill come up - especially if you are in a private practice or DMH setting. I encourage you to really look at what it isyou value and need in supervision before signing on with a supervisor or clinic. We all want to complete our hours andexperience and we may sometimes grabat the first internship offer that comesour way without fully assessing if theplacement and/or supervision will meetour needs. Therefore, make your own listof what is important to you when seekingsupervision and a placement.
Good luck!
