INSIDE THIS ISSUE
L ve’s Notes
In 1996 I was appointed as a district superintendent for the first time. It was a totally new experience for me. I had been a pastor of a local church for 20 years before that. It didn’t take long for Marilynn and me to notice one very big difference in our personal lives. As a district superintendent, our family didn’t have the connection and support of a local congregation. Oh, I had plenty of congregations to relate to, but not one that was ours...where we got to know the people and they got to know us...and where friendships formed. It was a great adjustment for our whole family. In 2010 I started another round of the same thing, this time for eight years. The recollection of that feeling of not really being connected came back to us though it was somewhat different this time. We were empty-nesters by then and we didn’t have to worry about how the boys were holding up under that different kind of setting. I mention all of this because, in the last two weeks, the realization of
what it means to have a congregation of supportive folks in your life has
come flooding in on me. As I write this, my shoulder surgery was not
quite two weeks ago. In that time, this congregation’s love and support
through calls, texts, cards and even food has been overwhelming. Your
encouragement has meant so much not just to me, but to Marilynn as
well. How good it is to be back among caring people. I just pray that, as
your pastor, I can help you to feel loved by your pastor’s family.
Because you certainly are!

WD2 Adult Bible Study
led by Todd Love with commentary by Francis Chan
True faith produces fruit. A faith without action and without life change is ultimately a dead faith. The book of James speaks to the realities of a living faith in Jesus—the kind of roll-up-your-sleeves and get-your-hands-dirty discipleship that is borne out of an authentic relationship with the risen Lord. James writes to believers who know suffering, who've faced trials, and who ultimately desire a deep relationship with God.
Beginning Wed. Sept. 4 (2nd night of WD2) Dinner 5:30; Study 6:00
Francis is the founding pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, California, and is the
founder of Eternity Bible College. Currently, Francis is planting churches in the San Francis-
co area and has launched a countrywide discipleship movement with David Platt called
Multiply. Francis lives in Northern California with his wife, Lisa, and their seven children.
