Phonetics is the study of speech sounds and how to transcribe them.Phonology is the study of sound systems.

Think of an ear. The word phone means sound, so phonetics and phonology will always have something to do with sound.

2: Morphology & Lexicology2: Morphology & Lexicology

Think of shape. The word ‘morph’ means shape, so morphology and ‘lexi’ means word in Ancient Greek, so morphology and lexicology will always have something to do with shape of words ie prefixes, spelling etc.

Morphology is the study of structure or forms of words.Lexicology is the study of words.

3: Syntax3: Syntax

Syntax is the study of rules determining how words are combined into sentences. It is how to arrange and group and order words.

Think of glue. Syntax is about the way we decide to stick our words together so that our ideas form sentences.

4: Discourse4: Discourse

Discourse is a connected series of utterances or sentences and looking at how they link with each other.

Think of conversation, where what you say is directly linked to what you have just heard. Conversation is a classic example of discourse.

5: Semantics5: Semantics

Semantics is the study of meaning in language.

Think of agreeing on a handshake. Semantics is about common agreed meaning between people. We need it in order for communication to be successful.
