What was my life like before Fair Trade?

When I was growing up life was really hard. I worked on the farm with my family from 7 in the morning until 8 in the evening.

About 10 years ago the price of my bananas started to fall rapidly. This was because lots of other countries were now producing bananas and if I didn’t reduce the price of my bananas I wouldn’t be able to sell any at all. I was struggling to look after my family properly.

Back then we were spraying the banana trees with chemicals so that the insects didn’t destroy them. Sometimes I got some of this spray into my eyes and it really stung, so badly that it hurt to open them and I had to stay in bed for a few days.

Thankfully all this changed 5 years ago…

That was when my farm become part of the local Fair Trade cooperative and now I am able to;

-Earn more money, this is why I have been able to send my daughter to school. - Use less harmful methods of farming, as I have covered my bananas in plastic bags as they grow I have not used any chemicals on the bananas- Spend more time with my family. - Enjoy being part of a community.
