Jaco Pastorius Style roove
L 89
Your ction Plan
1. Fantastic. You've decided to take on the 'Jacogroove'! Well believe it or not one of the most helpful
and inspiring things you should now do is put Jaco
Pastorius on your listening list. To really get deep into
this style of playing this will be an invaluable tool. To
start you off on the right foot you should listen to
Jaco performing Come on Come Over, Used To Be A
Cha Cha and The Chicken. These can be found on
YouTube.
2. Mastering the 16th note funk groove feel actually
relies heavily on your plucking hand technique. Even
if your having no difficulties at all playing this riff you
should still check out these 3 tutorials (links below) to
make sure your plucking hand is optimized and
functioning as well as it should be. Watch out: this is
a key mistake… so many bass players concentrate
95% of their energy on what's happening with the
fingerboard hand and don't give any attention to theplucking hand. This is a mistake! Make sure you're
taking both hands into account.

3. It's important that you develop your own riffs when
using this style of playing. As homework I want you
to come up with 3 original riffs that employ the '16thnote groove feel'. If you have trouble doing this and
need some inspiration there's a list of links to my
other groove lessons below this 'Action List' that
should get you inspired and ready to go!
4. Look into Jaco's influences. To really understand
where Jaco was coming from it's important that you
can understand and can relate to not only his playing, but also the players who influenced him. Add these
people to your listening list - Rocco Prestia, Chuck
Rainey, Ron Carter, Jerry Jemmont… and, throw
some James Brown in there too!
