February was a busy month at LBC with plenty of learning and activities on the go. Basketball was in full swing, it was “I Love to Read” month and students have started working on their Science Fair projects. These are just a few of the things that students have been working on recently.

At the end of last year, staff had the opportunity to work with Warren Woytuk, an educator who is a part of the Critical Thinking Consortium. He has since been back a few times to inform and support our school division’s work around critical thinking. Our latest such opportunity was early February and all of our grade five to eight teachers had the opportunity to reflect on opportunities they have provided LBC students and plan upcoming ones.

The consortium talks about the C3 approach: critical, creative and collaborative thinking. They believe “that individuals cannot be good “critical” thinkers if they have little or no imagination and creativity. Similarly, no one will get very far as a good critical thinker without engaging with the ideas of others. In other words, effective or quality thinking is invariably critical, creative and collaborative in nature.”

Save the Date! Our Spring Concert will take place at 1:00 and 6:30 p.m. on April 10. It will feature our Grade 7/8 Band, Grade 5/6 Recorder/Band ensemble, Choir, and a number of special acts! As performing is part of being a musician, please ensure your child/ren are able to make it to this important event.

Ten of our students attended Honour Band in February. The culminating concert with the Honour Band and three high school band from SRSD was very well done and well attended. Thank you to Seine River School Division for allowing such enriching programs to exist for our students and Mr. Bater, Mrs. Betz, and Mrs, Markusson for directing the band!

Our girls also had a great regular season finishing first in the B-side basketball bracket. All teams will be playing home games for the playoffs this year, so come support our teams as they play for banners this March! Our grade 6 teams participated in the basketball friendship tournament at the beginning of the month where our teams were able to play 5 basketball games against the other schools in our division. Both the girls and boys teams played really well at the tournament and showed how much they have improved from the beginning of January.

Tournament News

Congratulations goes out to the Grade 8 Boys Basketball Team on competing in the Linden Meadows Basketball Tournament on February 22 & 23. The boys lost a heart breaking game to #1 ranked Charelswood Junior High by 5 points. After that the boys played #2 ranked George Waters and lost badly after being sore and tired from the game before. The boys team ended up redeeming themselves in their last game of the tournament against Grant Park winning 63-26. Player of the game awards went to Braden, Gio, and Shadrak. Congratulations Boys!
