Unraveling Mysteries of the Common LoonWhile common loon breeding populations in the Upper Midwest are generally stable, there is much concern over contaminant exposure and other environmental factors which have a negative effect on their population. Join Kevin Kenow, Research Wildlife Biologist, for a lesson on the Common Loon and the tracking of their migration patterns from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan to their wintering areas. Movement data from radiomarked loons are served on a web site estab-lished to provide project information to partners and the public: (www.umesc.usgs.gov/terrestrial/migratory_birds/loons/migrations.html). In addition, geolocator tags were attached to loons to provide a record of foraging patterns and depth of foraging through-out the year. This work provides valuable information required by resource managers for development and implementation of regional common loon conservation strategies.

Discovery Preschool is a Minnesota Reading Corps Site!

Minnesota Reading Corps Preschool Literacy Tutors work with preschool-aged children in their classrooms to create lit-eracy-rich environments, focusing on the “Big Five” emergent literacy skills. Our

Discovery Preschool students receive this additional attention as a part of their daily routine. Data is regularly collected for each child in order to tailor literacy interventions for individual children, children in small groups, and for whole classrooms.

La Crescent-Hokah Early Childhood Discovery Preschool works every day to ensure a well-rounded and developmentally appropriate pre-Kindergarten experience that lays the founda-tion for a successful K-12 experience and beyond, while discovering and carefully nurturing the strengths of every student.

Highly-trained and experienced staff ensure the delivery of a state-approved and research-based curriculum that is carefully aligned with our K- 12 standards but more importantly puts the needs and interests of each individual child at the center of every decision we make.

Discovery Preschool takes great pride in being able to offer pre-school that truly prepares the whole student for Kindergarten. Our teaching staff participate in the District’s annual student achievement goal setting process as well as the District-wide Curriculum teams to be assured that how we prepare our learners will provide the most benefit with the rest of their academic career at La Crescent-Hokah Public Schools. The Discovery Preschool teaching staff also work directly with kindergarten teachers all school year through Professional Learning Communities to truly gain the best understanding of what a student needs to be successful in Kindergarten.
