By Diana Saenger The Old Globe Theatre’s

holiday season begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, with the sixth annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Globe’s Copley Plaza and the opening of a San Diego tradition: the delight-ful run of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”

This year’s show is direct-ed by James Vásquez, has a new Grinch star, and a sleigh full of local children singing and dancing their hearts out.

La Jollan Gabi Liebowitz, 13, a student at Francis Parker, plays the role of Bet-ty Lou Who, the eldest daughter in the Who Fami-ly. She has appeared in ma-ny theatrical productions throughout the county.

Liam James Brandt, 11, of Del Mar, is back for year two. He attends The Nativity School in Rancho Sante Fe and has appeared locally be-fore, too.

“I love the Grinch show and had so much fun last year,” he said. “It’s fun to jump out from the stage in those funny costumes and sing joyful songs.”

Brandt said he’s taken voice lessons from Courtney Coy, and acting workshops at North Coast Repertory Theatre, in Point Loma, and at summer camps. Support-ive parents, and a school principal making sure Brandt keeps up his academic work when he misses school for performances, are reasons Brandt can do what he loves.

He says kids who want to try out for the theater abso-lutely should. “The shows are so fun, and you get to meet so many different peo-ple, it’s a great experience.”

Blue Schroeder, 11, of La Jolla, also a student at Fran-cis Parker, is making her de-but in the Grinch ensemble. Schroeder has had some training in camp classes, but said she’s honed her craft more on her own.

“I love singing and danc-ing, and I watch and learn from artists in those fields. I tried out for Grinch because it’s a show that’s challenging and one that would show my personality,” she said. “For me it’s not about the money, but the happy feel-ing I get when performing.”

With only a few years of stage experience, Schro-eder, who hopes to make performing her career, has learned some important les-sons about the theater.

“If you really want this, you have to push, but not get upset if you don’t get something you try out for,” she said. “It’s a lot about your own personality and how you respond. If you don’t make an audition then find something in yourself you didn’t know was there and keep going.”

Steve Blanchard will get

his grump on as the Grinch. He has appeared on Broad-way in “Beauty and the Beast,” “Camelot,” “The Three Musketeers” and “A Christmas Carol.”

Other lead roles belong to Logan Lipton (Young Max), Steve Gunderson (Old Max), Remy Margaret Corbin and Caitlin McAuliffe (Cindy Lou Who), and Geno Carr (Papa Who).

Along with a magical set (John Lee Beatty, Pat Collins), hilariously marvelous costumes (Robert Morgan), zany songs (Albert Hague, Joshua Rosenblum, Ron Colvard) and fanciful dance numbers (John DeLuca, James Vásquez, David Krane, Bob Richard) the cast will deck the stage to tell the timeless tale about a grumpy green Grinch who steals a town’s presents.

Frank the Train ManThe purchase of a train set can provide years

of delight and joy, creating a new custom for your family. No one can better offer you the train selection and purchase advice than Jim and Carmen Cooley.

It would be easy to assume that Jim is Frank “The Trainman,” the namesake of the museum and San Diego’s oldest train store, but that isn’t true. Frank Cox was a close friend of Jim’s who passed away in 1989. Jim bought the store from Cox in 1980 and left it and its name relatively unchanged as a tribute to his friend. Jim and his wife, Carmen, have worked closely together in their automotive museum and train store since the purchase some 32 years ago.

The store doesn’t have much in the way of a website so most of the train sales are done face-to-face with people who live in or are visiting San Diego. Frank the Trainman, 4233 Park Blvd, SD 92103. (619) 295-1611.

C&H PhotoProudly continuing the long tradition

of a camera store in La Jolla, C&H Photo is the essence of “your neighborhood store.” Former partner with Nelson Photo, owner Leon Chow and long-time friend David Hinkel, an award- winning underwater photographer, have teamed up to become the C and H in C&H Photo.

With the same helpful staff of more than five years — almost 200 years of combined service experience — it is the place to get accurate knowledge in the world of photography, and recently, the decades of change from film to digital.

They sell and service all major name brands like Canon, Nikon, Leica, Fuji and Panasonic. Although you can buy cameras anywhere, only here can you get great advice, practical instruction and attend a myriad of different classes to sharpen your photographic skills, all under one roof.

Their adage is “to make better

photographers. The rest will take of care of itself.” And the proof is in the print. C&H Photo has a complete in-house photofinishing lab, capable of prints, digital conversion / prints and video, and an impressive list of other services.

They proudly mention they have often done the work for many award-winners. Monthly, in their gallery space facing Fay Avenue, C&H Photo displays the work of a selected “artist” — a customer — to show off their accomplishments. When you learn to do something well, it is nice to be able to share it with others, just a little bit.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit C&H Photo yet, do so this holiday season. They are at 7720 Fay Ave. (858) 729- 6565. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, As always, the holidays are a special time for photography. More details at candhphoto.com, and look for their upcoming special event days and promotions.
