La Jolla’s history dates to 15,000 years ago whentribal Indians lived along the cliffs and coastlinedepending on the ocean’s ample food supply.Spanish explorers visited the area on cursory expe-ditions, but the first real settlement did not takeplace until the 1880s when La Jolla became part ofthe Southern California land booms resulting in lotdivisions and parcel distributions of the area nowknown as the Village.

The major speculator was a New York stockbro-

ker named Frank Terrell Botsford, who arrived inSan Diego by boat, took a trip north by carriage, andin January 1886 noted in his journal that he had“bought La Jolla.” The purchase consisted of sev-eral pueblo lots designated as La Jolla Park, whichwere auctioned April 30, 1887, some selling for morethan $1,000 each.

Early buyers were attracted to La Jolla for thesame elements that set the area apart today — thebeautifully formed coastline, the sunny climate and

the ever-present allure of the sea. Railroad linesconnected La Jolla to San Diego in the late 19thcentury, attracting more and more visitors interest-ed in building small beach cottages that could beused as secondary homes or rented.

Commercial endeavors, including several hotels,followed.

Several notable residents added greatly to theculture of the community, including Anna Held, whostarted the Green Dragon Colony and built a seriesof unique houses on the cliffs near Goldfish Point;also, Ellen Browning and Eliza Virginia Scripps, whocame to establish residences and became great phi-lanthropists adding vastly to the architectural andcultural fabric of the community.

The 1920s was an era of expansive growth andprosperity for La Jolla in terms of residential devel-opment. Large estates and villas were built in the

Muirlands, and La Jolla Shores also was developed. The La Jolla Beach and Yacht (now Tennis) Cluband the La Jolla Country Club also opened withinthe decade, along with La Valencia hotel and a newColonial Inn. La Jolla by-the-Beautiful Sea playedhost to the rich and famous who, like everyone, came to enjoy the special ambience of a seasideresort with shops, galleries and restaurants.

La Jolla continued to grow through the 1940swith the subdivision of Upper and Lower Hermosa, while the 1960s witnessed the coming of the UCSDcampus and the introduction of the “town andgown” community. Today it is home to more than50,000 people — compared with the 200 at theturn of the 20th century who lived amid sagebrushand traveled by horse and carriage on dirt roads.
