Big Sir Message

June 17 is Fathers Day “The greatness of a man is not how much wealth he acquires, but his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively”. This is a quote by Bob Marley. What makes a father? Showing up is half the battle, always showing up for your children is the whole thing about being a father. This is something that, hopefully, we have all done for not only our children, but for any child we have come into contact with. In May of 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd is credited with having the idea of Fathers Day. While sitting in church listening to a Mothers Day sermon, she decided she wanted to designate a day for her dad. It was not until 1972 that Richard Nixon signed a public law making it a permanent national holiday.

Little Sir Message

Our speaker for SIRS luncheon on June 5th is Stan Burford.  You may recognize the name from years of traffic reporting on KGO.  Stan is friendly, funny and a genuinely great guy who has years of experience in studying and reporting traffic in the Bay Area.  Maybe he can even give us insights on what the hell happened to our traffic in Marin and how to get around it.

1960, six months into college, Stan had a choice - a career in broadcasting or follow the original plan and become an Architect.   You guessed it, a change in majors and six months later his first job in “real radio” - KBCO the worlds smallest FM station that nobody ever heard of.....That was 1961.

Fifty one years later, the total was 8 Radio stations, 8 TV stations, 6 Media production companies - 11 EMMYs - a life membership in The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and induction into the west coast chapter of the Radio Hall of Fame.

Born and raised in San Francisco.   Married 52 years and counting to another SF native.   Happy residents of Marin for 49 years.   Two children,  five grandchildren and a new puppy.

Looking forward, we have some fun SIR events and speakers on the horizon:

July will give us our own Bill Reid who will show us the South of France.  We also have a SIRS lunch at the Schelville Grill on the road to Napa.

August, we will have a speaker from the Anti-Defamation League( ADL) who will speak about a variety of issues, including white supremacy and other extremism issues in Northern California. We also have a SIRS “Back to the Beach” party at Mike Dean’s house.

LITTER SIR MIKE DEAN

SIRndader’s

We started the month of May by singing at Marin Terrace in Mill Valley.  I asked to change our starting time form 2:00 to 1:00 as the traffic on Fridays is horrible and all the singers have to use 101 to get home.  On the 11th, we sang at Aegis in Corte Madera and had our usual 50 plus people sitting in the audience. On the 18th we will sing at Deer Park Retirement in Novato where we are happily received and where we always have a good time.  On our last program in May, we sing at Senior Access in San Rafael.  This is a small day care center where the people really look forward to having us.  The director at this center is a sweetheart and does everything possible to make our visit successful.

Bowling Report

Walkers

The Sir's winter bowling season has ended and the 22A team (Thornton, Delfino & Michel) won the 4th quarter and by virtue of that was in the playoffs. In the 4 team playoff for the championship, we finish 2nd

We bowl every Friday at Country Club Bowl September through May. The cost is $17.00 per week. How well you bowl is not a concern because it’s a 100% handicap league. If you want to participate in an indoor sport, get some exercise and enjoy some good fellowship, please give any bowler a call. Now is a good time to form a team for the coming season. There are 4 bowlers to a team but you can get by with 3 and bowl with a vacancy. There were several teams with vacancies this past year.Next report will be in September.

Thanks,Jack Michael

"We're known as the Larkspur Walkers. Some call us the Walker Talkers. First we stretch and groan and moan, But the exercise gives us "buffed-up" tone. We step right out. We're on our way. Gotta keep moving for another day!

You'll see us on stair and trail and street.

A happier group you'll never meet. It's not just play, So what do you say, Come walk with us some sunny day.

WE ARE THE LARKSPUR WALKERS! “

The Next Sirs Poker Game is scheduled for Monday June 11, 2018

They had 8 players show up to play poker on Monday May 14th. Several of the players arrived a little early and were treated to a nice breakfast by Bud Pflueger at the Indian Valley Golf Course 19th Bar and Grill. It was Bud’s first time to play with the group and nice that he was able to join the poker club for the day. If you ever get a chance even if you don’t play poker, join us for a great time and breakfast in the morning. Players enjoyed the day and they had a great turnout and poker game for the month. Ray Bufkin let up this month and Steve Bettega took everyone’s money to pay his utility bill. The other winners were Mike Dean and as always Walt Torrens. This month the following players were able to play: Steve Bettega, Ray Bufkin, Mike Dean, Stan Ellexson , Steve Miller, Bud Pflueger, Jim Stein, and Walt Torrens, We hope to see everyone on June 11th for poker and a great breakfast. Since I was not able to play this month, I did not have new pictures to share with this bulletin. Will new pictures in June

Ray at his finest Day

The Sirs Poker Club play poker on the first Monday after the regular Sirs luncheon is a lot of fun. Please take the time to join us. If you think we can improve on our games and get larger turnouts, give us your thoughts and comments? We would like to improve in the number of players, and have a fun outing and enjoy good friends and food.

There is a $50 buy in to play poker. The red chips are 50 cents, black chips dollar and the yellow chips are five dollars. There is a 3 raise maximum and it is dealer’s choice on the game they would like to play. The deck has one joker and it goes with aces, straights, and flushes. However, if you name a wild card game such as down and dirty, the joker is automatically wild unless you state at the beginning the joker is not wild.

Hope you can take the time to join us for a really fun day of poker. If you are interested in joining our poker group, please let Walt Torrens or me know. We will add you to the monthly notification and e-mail reminder to list of players.

Turning Pages

“Exit West” by Mohsin Hamid, 2017 fiction 231 pages

Saeed and Nadia meet and fall in love in an unnamed city likely in the Middle East, which is about to be torn apart by war between “militants” and the government. People begin discovering “doors” which are portals allowing instant migration away, but to unknown destinations, and the couple do this and find themselves in Mykonos and later London and then Marin County. Migrants from all over the world are arriving in cities like London, which reacts initially with force to try to stop the inflow and then alters to a more kindly course of action. A cleverly written story, this novel is about relationships, between Saeed and Nadia as their relationship alters with each move and as they discover more about themselves, and also about how communities of strangers relate to one another and adapt, some clustering with their own and others reaching out. This is both a contemporary narrative, resonating with current refugee problems, but also timeless in its portrayal of how people interact. It is about love and its mutability, and about hate and alienation amongst people of all cultures. The writing style is unique, simple, inventive and captivating. Winner of numerous awards, this author, originally from Lahore, Pakistan, has penned three previous novels, and an essay. Sometimes dark, always thought-provoking, this is a challenging novel, one quickly read but more difficult to understand. It raises questions and provokes dialogue. Well-reviewed by the N.Y. Times, I also highly recommend it.

“The Zookeeper’s Wife” by Diane Ackerman 2007, non-fiction

The author has written a story based upon the notes and diary of Antonia and by interviews with their children, supplemented by known history of Poland and Warsaw in the years between 1935 and 1945. Antonia Zabinski is the wife of Jan who together run the Warsaw Zoo before and then after the war. Antonia has a unique understanding and rapport with animals of all descriptions, and even her house is home to a variety of unusual animals who are pets. As the invasion of Poland by the Nazis evolves into the purge of the Warsaw Ghetto, the Zabinski home becomes a sanctuary for escaping Jews, either on a semi-permanent basis or as a brief stop in transit to some countryside refuge. Catholic, and therefore exempt from persecution, they are friends with many Jews and dedicated throughout the war to saving as many as possible, which turns out to be hundreds saved from the death camps. Jan finds interesting paths into and out of the Ghetto, often bringing a refugee with him at considerable personal risk. As the zoo deteriorates during the war and is eventually almost totally destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising against the Germans, Jan finds interesting ways to use zoo shelters as hideouts for their “Guests” even with the German barracks nearby. A unique war story of survival , this history and family biography has all the ingredients: joy and sorrow, pain and love.
