REPORT FROM ZACH MENESES ON MISSION IN DENVER Hi everyone! I just wanted to check-in with you all concerning my year here at Christ in the City! I am about a month and a half into my year of service and want to share some of my experiences with you. Your prayers and support have been most appreciated – you are all a part of this mission and we could not do what we do without you! I have broken down my experiences thus far into three categories. Please feel free to read!

Community Life: Community life is perhaps the aspect of this year I was most excited for. Past missionaries have consistently told me that this is the most difficult part and most beautiful part of the year – learning how to live in close-proximity with 33 other people. In our community, we have 18 women and 16 men, with ages rang-ing from 18 to 25. Some are returning for a second year, but many of us are new to CIC. We come from all parts of the country, from California and New York to Minnesota and Florida.

Community life has been exactly what I thought it’d be – wonderful and demanding. I love my community and many of my fellow missionaries are becoming close friends. The difficulties of the streets, of the rigorous sched-ule, and the other obstacles we face make each person a shoulder to lean on and a listening ear. But community is not easy and takes real sacrifice. This is a year of growth and the growing pains are necessary. It is easy to get frustrated when I’m rubbing shoulders with 33 other different people. I am (slowly) learning to see people for more than their mistakes and the ways they annoy me. I am learning patience and humility. I am also learning that I also annoy people, hurt them, and cause problems. Perhaps more importantly, I’m learning how to be patient with myself. This is the fruit of community life – knowing and loving myself better. The process has just begun and yet community life is already giving me the opportunity to grow.

Street Ministry: Ah, street ministry. This is perhaps the most visible portion of our life here – and maybe the true reason you are supporting me. This is where we get our name – we go out into the city to be Christ and to see Christ. The poor are a group of people talked about often, and yet so rarely actually talked to. This has become abundantly apparent in my encounters with them.

We have been going out onto the streets for about 3 weeks. Every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday we go on street walks, where we simply go out into the city in teams and takes routes to see who we can find. No agenda, no met-rics – just encounter. My route is called “Feeds” and I go to various food lines throughout the city. The streets have been the easiest and most fun part of my time here. Of course, there are difficulties. Encountering real bro-kenness, addiction, and the shame of past failures in people on the streets can weigh me down, especially when it is often out of my hands to really help people. But I’ve been committed to simply being a light in the time I am with someone. Regardless of what happens when I leave, in the time I’m with them, I want them to be treated like a real human being.

I met a man last week who had a profound effect on me. We were chatting and he mentioned how important God was to him. I invited him to read a few Bible verses with me. As we both broke open our Bibles and talked through some of his favorite verses, he smiled at me and said, “I can’t remember the last time someone did this with me.” What a gift! He does not get the chance to talked about the deeper parts of his life and spirit often, and even for our brief time together, he was reminded about the beauty of the faith and God’s love for him. And I was given the chance to see that even in the midst of suffering, faith can sustain me and give me hope. Of course, not all conversations go like that and we often don’t talk about God at all – that isn’t necessarily our mission. We’re not preachers and our goal isn’t conversion, it’s all about friendship. However, there are beautiful encounters like this every week and the chance to meet Christ’s chosen ones is one of His greatest gifts to me

Spirituality: Spiritually, this past month has been a roller-coaster. Without boring you with details, I will just say that God is inviting me to trust that he is a gentle Father – everything he allows to happen in my life is for my ben-efit. Everything is a gift. We have Mass and personal prayer time every day, so I’ve been given the chance to be with Him often. Each time, He invites me to just be with Him. No complicated prayers, no standards or expecta-tions. He just wants me. When I am close to Him, I can be a better light to my community and my friends on the streets. Prayer time is the most important time of the day, the time where I get all the strength necessary to be Christ and see Christ in the City.

Thank you again everyone for your support. This year is going to be such a gift and I couldn’t be here without you all. You are in my prayers every day and I ask that you pray for me as well. I’ll be sharing these emails on about a monthly basis, with a longer and more detailed newsletter every once in a while as well. I look forward to sharing this journey with you all!!

God bless, Zach Meneses

MESSAGES FROM MSGR. KERRY Dear Parishioners,

Many, many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make “Taste of Vietnam 2019” such a success last weekend. The food was great and the turnout of parishioners from every language group was excellent. The spirit of cooperation and hard work demonstrat-ed by our Vietnamese Community was amazing. What an excellent example of our parish working together to provide for the needs of our community. Thank You!

This Sunday is Deacon Dr. Tony Bube’s 97th birthday! Deacon Tony has only just now started to slow down after serving many years as a deacon and as a religion teacher in our parish school on a daily basis. Deacon Tony is a great example of perseverance and loyal dedication to the work of the Lord here in our midst. Happy Birthday Deacon Tony! Your parishioners and priests love you and appreciate you!

This Sunday is Respect Life Sunday in our parish and October is respect Life Month throughout the United States. Everywhere you turn human life is at risk from the unborn children to the children of immigrants at the border, to the victims of war and violence, poverty and those with special needs. All human life at every age deserves respect and the conditions needed for living including shelter, healthcare, education and freedom from persecution. For more information on life issues go to www.respectlife.org.

Estimados feligreses,

Sincerely in Christ,

Kerry Beaulieu

Amen!
