Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
We would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year. December was a very busy month at La Salle School as students and staff celebrated several events together. Our annual Winter Concert Series was a success as the gymnasium was packed with enthusiastic proud family members, sleigh bells rang and we even got a visit from a jolly guy in a red suit. Thank you to the students, staff and parents for supporting these events and making it an enjoyable celebration. Special thanks to Mrs. Kuhl, Mrs. Knapp, Ms. Comeault and Mrs.
Pankratz for all of their hard work in organizing such enjoyable and fun-filled evenings.
Along with these varied activities, there were also several initiatives undertaken over the last month to assist those in need and to promote positive social values. Our students collected hampers for families in need during the holiday season. These activities provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their leadership abilities and understand the role they can play within our school and their community. No matter a person’s age, everyone
can make a positive difference in the lives of others.
In addition, staff and students from K-8 also displayed their creativity with a spirit week, which was a wonderful way to highlight our positive school culture while heading into the
holidays.
As we find ourselves in the New Year, we look ahead to new exciting learning opportunities for our students in 2018. Although it has been said before, it can never be said enough. We truly appreciate the support you provide for the students and staff at
La Salle School. Happy New Year everyone!
Sincerely,
Robert Bouchard Jayson Abraham

On Tuesday, November 7th all grade 1/2 students and their teachers participated in an “Experiment Extrava-
ganza”. Each classroom took a part of our science unit and created a hands-on activity or two for the students
to participate in. Students rotated throughout the classrooms learning such things as what objects sink or
float, what makes something melt or freeze, what happens to liquids when they are mixed together, and the
viscosity of liquids. The following is what the students in 1/2 H had to say.
In 1/2 H we had marshmallows to sink and float. First we didn’t squeeze the marshmallows and they floated.
Then we squeezed the marshmallows and they sunk. ~ Drake and Carter
We went to every 1/2 classroom. We dropped grapes in water but it did not sink. If you put salt in the water it
will float because the water gets heavier than the grapes. ~ Oliver and Fynn
In Mrs. 1/2 P’s room we tried melting an ice cube while sitting on it or putting the ice beside the lamp. ~
Kalen and Mikaila
In 1/2 N we used liquids. Milk floated on top of the oil. The oil was at the bottom of the cup. ~ Brianna and
Myla
In 1/2 H we tried to see which objects float and sink. Most of the objects sink. ~ Brooklyn and Lauryn
Here is what some of the others had to say:
“We made popsicles!” ~ Brennan
“It was fun!” ~ Claire
“I learned some liquids float and some liquids sink.” ~ Brielle
“Diet Pepsi sinks; Pepsi floats.” ~Jordynn
“We made a liquid tower.” ~ Carter
“We tried to make ice melt.” ~ Keagan
“I had fun with my friends.” ~ Myla
“We melted ice in many different ways.” ~ Ava

Milk Carton “Gingerbread” Houses
Friday, December 15th was a messy afternoon in 5/6H, as we constructed and
decorated milk carton houses. There were a few disasters and a few stressful
moments, but most of it was a lot of fun. As expected, not all candies actually
made it to the houses. Candy tasting was a big part of the process. Everyone
in 5/6H created a beautiful house! (Jazmin R.)
5/6H Travels the
World
For the past couple
of weeks, each
grade 5/6H student
has been researching a chosen country.
These aren’t any ordinary projects. We had
to find information about how our country
celebrates the month of December. Do they
celebrate Christmas or maybe some other
holiday? Part of the project was to do
something “extra” – teach us a song or a
dance, or how to say a few words in anoth-
er language. Some people brought a food
dish from their country. We toured the
world without having to leave the class-
room. (Jordan Arkle)
All of our FIVE basketball teams have had several pre-season practices in the month of Decem-ber and will start their regular season league games the week of January 15th. The Grade 6 Friendship Basketball Tournament is scheduled for February 2nd, 2018 – the girls are playing at La Barriere Crossings School and the boys will be hosted by St.
Adolphe School.

The La Salle School again this year is offering the students of grade seven and eight a one-day ski and snowboard outing to Holiday Mountain on Thursday March 1, 2018. This outing provides an excellent opportunity for these students to experience the life-long sport of skiing and snowboarding. Parents are reminded to talk to their son/daughter about the use of common sense on that day to help ensure that it is enjoyable for all the participants. Please review with your son/daughter all of the information in the booklet that will sent home once we return from Winter Break. There will be a lunch hour information meeting in the gymnasium on Friday February 16th, 2018
that all participating students must attend.

On December 12th, and carrying over to
December 13th and 14th, the grade 5/6
classes held a bake sale, raising a grand
total of $770.00 That money was used to
buy toys that were then donated to The
Christmas Cheer Board. We would like to
thank EVERYBODY that helped out and
supported our sale. Thanks to
you, several children will re-
ceive a gift that they might
not have otherwise received.
(Maddy P.)
The 5/6 classes raised money to
buy toys for the Christmas Cheer
Board by having a bake sale. We
raised $770.60 and then four
people got their names pulled from
a bin. The four people, Hayden,
Kara M., Nicholas, and Mikael M.,
went to go to Walmart to get the
toys. The day was a success! We
got two carts full of toys for the
Christmas Cheer Board.- Kara M.
I was excited to go to Walmart to
purchase toys for the grade 5/6
classes. Nick and I pushed the carts,
selected toys for both girls and boys,
and placed the toys on the cashier’s
line. Knowing that the kids will love the
presents. I was very happy to be able
to choose the toys and buy the presents
for my classmates.– Mikael M.
When we got to Walmart, we split into two groups,
girls with girls and boys with boys. We started in the
toddler area. We had $770 to spend. We thought
all the little toys were so cute. We brought
calculators to see how much we were spending. We
then went in to an aisle full of toys. We thought
would be good for ages 5-7 years old. We found
quite a few things for a little older kids. We went
through the aisles of toys than the games. We
purchased items like puzzles and board games. We
found toys for outside fun, like soccer,
volleyballs and footballs. We then returned to
school. While doing this, it made me feel
happy that some kids will have something for
Christmas this year!

We would like to thank everybody that support-
ed the bake sale so that we could buy toys and
gift cards for our “Feed a Family Hampers”. We
would also like to thank everybody that donated
food to the hampers and the Macdonald Falcons
hockey team who brought in a large donation as
well. We sponsored four families this year and
we were able fulfill the required list and more.
We (leadership students) had the opportunity to
deliver each hamper to the families and they we
over joyed with everything we were able to de-
liver.

What are we learning?
Numbers can be represented in many different ways and we can talk about the properties of numbers using mathematical lan-
guage. Knowing different representations and properties helps us to be flexible with our mathematical thinking.
