The OKI MC873dnx proved to be a solid choice for small workgroups looking for a straightforward multifunction printer with a low upfront cost. The highly reliable device supports a variety of mobile print-ing methods and includes an embedded software platform, allow-ing it to integrate with an array of time- and money-saving solutions. The MC873dnx’s strong ease of use should help to offset some of its shortcomings in BLI’s productivity tests. The device’s easy-to-navigate control panel, print drivers and scan driver help to keep downtime to a minimum. Furthermore, print quality is sure to meet or exceed expec-tations for general office use. And administrators will appreciate the ability to manage a fleet of mixed hardware through OKI PrintSuperVi-sion. With a low purchase price and competitive total cost of owner-ship over the course of 36 months, the unit offers a good value. BLI recommends the OKI MC873dnx.

TEST RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS

RELIABILITY EXCELLENT

The unit is certified highly reliable by BLI, as it produced 50,000 impressions and 5,000 scans with no misfeeds or service calls recorded. It should be noted that 21,663 impres-sions into testing, BLI technicians heard a squealing noise coming from the back of the unit, so they cleaned and lubricated the ejector assembly shafts, however this did not resolve the issue. OKI technicians replaced the ejector assembly and the issue was then resolved.

MULTITASKING VERY GOOD

The unit accepts print jobs and copy reserves to memory capacity, and users can program a scan job while a print or copy job is being output. No button needs to be pressed to reserve a copy job; users simply drop the document into the feeder, select features and begin scanning.

The interrupt function operates the same way regardless of the type of job being interrupted. Users press the Interrupt key, at which time the interrupted job auto-stops and all features for copy/scan jobs can be accessed. Once the interrupting job is complete, the interrupted job begins again after approximately 40 seconds; alternatively, users can press the Start key to have the job continue immediately.

Jobs are processed on a first-in, first-out basis; priority mode can’t be changed.

ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES VERY GOOD

The embedded web server allows administrators to accomplish many tasks, including changing device and security settings, viewing the counters (above), and managing the address book. Administrators can also use the utility to create permissions by user and/or department, to limit or prohibit color usage, for instance. Easy to navigate, the embedded web server can run in admin or user mode.

Administrators can manage OKI and compatible devices on the network via PrintSuperVision (PSV); details about non-OKI hardware depend on the manufacturer, which is typical. The utility allows for many functions to be performed, such as the ability to schedule reports and have them delivered via email.

PSV comes in two versions, allowing for more efficient fleet management than previously. Pro-fessional Edition is tailored to small businesses, while Enterprise Edition has a robust platform that enables administrators and helpdesk personnel to manage literally thousands of net-worked devices; both versions are flexible and allow for customization of the interface, alerts configuration, and reports to be run.

Administrators can configure the device to track pages by individual, department or clients, as well as prohibit color usage and other functions as desired. Administrators can utilize PSV to configure and manage multiple MC873 devices at one time.

FEEDBACK TO WORKSTATIONS GOOD

Because there’s no traditional feedback utility bundled with the unit, pop-up messages and icon alerts aren’t available. Print job completion notification and audible alerts can’t be configured, either. Therefore, users must be proactive in obtaining status updates via

the embedded web server (by knowing the IP address; no link in the drivers), the OKI LPR Utility, or PSV.

The LPR Utility, which can be loaded by default with the drivers via the custom routine, allows users to see what’s currently printing. By double clicking a device from the list, users can get the status for that MFP or printer.

The main screen of the embedded web server provides device and consumables status, with toner and drum levels presented in color-coded gauges with accompanying text. There is no paper supply gauge.

PSV delivers similar status details as the embedded web server (plus the remaining life of both the belt and fuser), while allowing administrators to configure email alerts that cover a variety of conditions, too.

EASE OF NETWORK SETUP VERY GOOD

Physical setup of the unit, which comes fully assembled, is straightforward. Due to size and weight concerns, the manufacturer recommends at least three people lift the unit out of the box and place it in the desired location. Preinstalled starter cartridges (rated yields, 2,500 pages for each color) and the drums must be taken out in order to remove the protective seals.

The disc launches when inserted in the drive, the IP address is assigned and the port is created, all automatically. It takes seven clicks to install the PCL driver. Users will be up and running in minutes.

The PostScript and XPS drivers, along with all included software, can be installed via the custom routine.

— There’s no bundled utility that allows for driver packages to be created and pushed out to mul-tiple PCs, nor can PSV be used to achieve this task.

To greatly simplify setup in larger environments, settings can be copied over to multiple devices using PSV (note that cloning can be done only within the same device family).

The disc also contains the user guide, along with links to OKI’s website where PSV, ABBYY Fine-Reader 12 Sprint and the cloud-based SENDYS Explorer LITE connector can be downloaded.

The PCL (above) and PostScript drivers are quite different in appearance and layout, which may be confusing for users that need to switch between them. To reduce feature selection to a single click, users can create an unlimited number of job profiles on any tab of the PCL driver. Users can program orientation, paper size and source, duplex and color mode on the main screen, while features like quantity, scale and secure print can be programmed on other tabs.

Graphical changes in the drivers indicate when specific features such as duplex have been selected.

The drivers offer color matching options to better match the output of the document being printed (PostScript shown above), as well as the ability to enhance output by adjusting the color balance.

Organizations can extend the life of the cartridges and lower TCO through toner-save mode, which offers three setting levels of low, medium and high.

Via the drivers or PSV, users have the ability to split a job by sending, for instance, 10 sets to the unit and another 10 sets to a second OKI device.

The unit includes OKI’s scan utility, ActKey, which lets users send scans from their desktops.

Scan to USB is standard. Users must press the Scan key and then the Scan to USB Memory selection in the scan menu, after which the same settings as for scan to email or network fold-ers can be selected. Users can’t choose a folder to scan to, which some competitive devices allow.

The scan menu is well-organized and easy to navigate.

The unit supports LDAP, which means users can quickly find destinations at the control panel. Users can configure one-touch buttons for email addresses and folder destinations (up to 40 each), as well as for fax and internet fax destinations. Entering email addresses using the dis-play’s QWERTY keypad is simple, as the keys are responsive and of average size.

— Scan speeds were the slowest or among the slowest of competitive models in this class in all modes tested.

Scanned files are auto-compressed. Black file size and default color file size were competitive. From full-color default mode to best compression mode, color files were reduced minimally. However, best compression in color mode was larger than average compared to the group.

Organizations can choose to deploy ABBYY FineReader Sprint 12 (includes OCR functionality) and/or the cloud-based SENDYS Explorer LITE (for file management).

COLOR/BLACK PRINT QUALITY VERY GOOD

Color consistency was impressive; all colors remained consistent throughout testing, with only a slight shift in yellow towards the very end. Business graphics were bright with well-reproduced light backgrounds and average consistency of solid colors, sharpness and production of pastel shades. Photographic images were of competitive smoothness and sharpness, with halftones visible over a wide range (the 90% to 100% levels looked similar). Flesh tones were slightly reddish, however.

Characters were fully formed and dark, with average sharpness and competitive smoothness of curves/serifs. Closely spaced fine lines remained distinct, lines were of a consistent thick-ness and diagonal lines showed no evidence of stair-stepping, while circles displayed some breakup. No overspray was detected around text or line art. Grayscale was visible over the entire range, with distinct separation between most levels (the 70% and 80% levels looked similar). Grayscale fill was smooth with no banding, and solids were dark and displayed com-petitive consistency of coverage.

Business graphics were bright with competitive consistency of solids, sharpness and pro-duction of pastel shades. However, backgrounds were not well produced. A broad range of halftones was visible in photographic images (90% to 100% looked similar). Smoothness of photographic images was competitive, while flesh tones were slightly reddish.

Characters were fully formed and dark with average sharpness and smoothness of curves/serifs. Production of closely spaced fine lines was average, as was consistency of line thickness, while circles and diagonal lines exhibited an average amount of breakup and stair-stepping, respectively. No overspray was noticed around text or line art. Grayscale was visible over most of the measured range, with distinct separation between most levels; the 15% to 29% levels looked the same and the 91% to 95% levels were similar. Smoothness of grayscale was average and no banding was evident. Solids were dark with competitive consistency of coverage.

BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook email messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the device as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device. The unit was tested with the PCL driver.

— Productivity was below average when copying multiple sets in auto color (all modes tested) and black in 1:2 and 2:2 modes. Black first-copy times were the slowest of the group from both the platen and the document feeder.

EASE OF USE VERY GOOD

The touchscreen control panel, which tilts freely, is easy to navigate. It features numerous hard keys and LEDs, along with dedicated keys for Print, Scan, Copy, Fax and Troubleshooting. Users can see toner and paper status by pressing the Status hard key on the display.

The Help (Troubleshooting) function provides information on device maintenance and how to change consumables.

Adjusting the drawer for different size paper is simple. Tabs must be pressed to move the

length and width guides, which slide in sync. With no corner separators, a spring-loaded ramp or anything else to make the process troublesome, loading paper is a breeze.

Clearing misfeeds in the three document feeder locations is easy. For jams in any area, instruc-tions and a graphical depiction of the unit are automatically brought up on the display; users scroll down to see the next direction.

— However, if the unit is positioned against a wall and a misfeed occurs in the rear, turning the unit around could be difficult for most users. Furthermore, to access misfeed locations in the front, the cartridge and drum assembly will have to be removed; and in these cases, the scan-ner bed must be flipped up to the right (it’s very top heavy), consumables have to be removed, and the drums are exposed, making them susceptible to damage.

Replacing the toner cartridge is clean. Users must first flip the scanner bed up and then pull the front cover open. The cartridges are labelled and color coded. Instructions on the display provide clear, step-by-step guidance.

User interventions are calculated based on BLI’s average tested toner yields, as well as the manufacturer’s rated yields for other consumables (drums, developer units, waste containers, etc.) . BLI calculates the total number of supplies and maintenance parts that would be required to output 90,000 pages (assumes 2,500 pages per month over three years) . Each individual cartridge or other consumable is counted as one intervention, so the black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges being replaced once count as four interventions. Long-life maintenance parts, such as fuser kits and rollers, and paper supply replenishments, aren’t included in BLI’s calculations.

FEATURE SET VERY GOOD

The unit’s open platform enables integration with time- and money-saving software devel-oped by OKI or third parties, such as those that streamline workflows or tighten security.

The unit has an optional wireless interface and supports mobile and cloud printing applica-tions, such as Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print.

Print from USB is standard. The port is on the left side of the front of the unit. The USB menu does not pop up automatically; users must press the Print hard key and then select Print from USB Memory. They can then browse folders, print JPEG, PDF, XPS and TIFF files, and can change selections for simplex/duplex, paper source, quantity and color mode.

Via PSV, users are able to send a print job to more than one device.

Conveniently, users can save one-touch buttons for frequently used settings for copy, scan, fax and USB print jobs by registering their selections in Job Macro (located in the top left corner of the interface).

The MC873dnx’s standard paper capacity of 1,370 sheets is higher than the average of its com-petitive group.

— However, its maximum paper capacity of 2,005 sheets is lower than average, as is its non-upgradable memory capacity of 1.25 GB.

The 250-GB capacity of the unit’s standard hard drive is competitive, as is the media weight it supports, at up to 100-lb. vellum from the drawers and 140-lb. index from the bypass. The device’s standard RADF has a capacity of 100 sheets, which is also competitive.

SUPPORTING TEST DATA

Test Environment: This product was tested in BLI’s 10,000-square-foot U.S. test lab, in an environment monitored by an Extech RH S20 Digital RH/Temperature Recorder and Honeywell Model 61 Seven-Day Temperature/Relative Humidity Chart Recorder. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from impacting equipment under test.

Test Equipment: BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2003 servers, Windows XP workstations, 10/100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.

Test Duration: Products are tested for two months, a portion of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run at half of its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly volume, with varying daily test volumes designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour workday. This variable schedule includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day.

Tested Configuration: OKI MC873dnx base unit.

Test Procedures: The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, which include a BLI-developed variation of ASTM’s 1318-90 Test Method for Determination of Productivity using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation under a Graphiclite D5000 Standard Viewer, color print quality is tested using a color test target, which is read using the X-Rite Eye-One/iO Color Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. In addition, density of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 500 Series Densitometer. Georgia-Pacific Spectrum Multi-Use 20-lb. bond is used in the tests, 10 percent of which is recycled paper containing 30 percent post-consumer content. Image quality is tested using Georgia-Pacific Printing Paper (96 brightness, 22-lb. bond).
