History of Lab
Purpose of AssessmentWhat it IS:● Measures year-to-year growth● Measures Grade level, age-based
standards● Sometimes measures student-based
growth (not always standard-to-standard)● Opportunity to compare students to the
“average”● Opportunity to compare schools’
proficiency levels● Opportunity compare schools’ ability to
grow students● Compare school performance year to year
(schools look at their own cohorts)
What it SHOULD BE:● Before learning (to see what a student
already knows so that learning focuses only on what needs to be learned)
● In the process of learning; along the way to inform/adapt instruction: to troubleshoot, identify misconceptions, misunderstandings
● To assess learning and plan reteaching● To personalize learning and ensure growth● Adaptable and individualized● Able to capture different ways of learning● Able to assess the full breadth of skills,
understandings, mindsets, and competencies that a school values

NWEA MAP TestsFAQs
● Computer adaptive test ● Taken 2-3 times a year (Fall-October, Winter- January,
Spring- April) ● ELA and Math in 2nd - 8th grades● 1st grade - practice checklist at end of the year ● Measures student’s performance level at different points in
the year● Shows growth over time

MAP TestsA Day in the Life
● Normal arrival at school ● LS students go to UNCC by homerooms / grade levels ● MS students stay in advisory groups ● Untimed test; takes an average of about 90 minutes● Reading takes longer than math ● One test per day
17
MAP TestsInterpreting the Results:
RIT Score
● Can be a range of 100-350 ● Unique to MAP testing● Each grade level and content has its own scale ● Stable, equal-interval scale ● Overall and subcategory scores in are given
18
MAP TestsInterpreting the Results:
RIT Score ● Tell us what a student is ready to learn; helps educators
chose teaching points for a lesson ● Create groups of students with similar scores ● Number of points of growth over time show who needs
more support ● Spring RIT score to Spring RIT score is the best growth
measure
19
MAP TestsInterpreting the Results:
Percentile ● Shows how a student’s RIT score compares to all students in
the US that have taken the MAP tests ● Approximately 10 million test results for reading and math ● Achievement status, not growth ● 50th Percentile = national norm ● Linking study says between 50 - 70 percentile will be
proficient on EOGs depending on grade level and content area
20
MAP TestsInterpreting the Results:
What We Don’t Get
● How many questions each student was given ● How many questions each student got correct or incorrect● Which questions a student was given● Which answer choice was selected ● Which questions were correct or incorrect
21
MAP TestsInterpreting the Results: Growth and Proficiency
● Proficiency on MAP can be looked at two ways: ○ Norm RIT Score (on par with the average in the US) ○ Norm RIT Score is equal to the 50th Percentile
● Growth is how many RIT score points the student has increased
● Goal for growth varies based on student starting point ● Growth goal also follows national average; Lab sets
independent goals as needed

Future: “Expanded Definition of Student Success”
Regardless of what future a young person might plan to pursue, he or she needs a strong academic foundation. But it’s not enough. The schools we invest in also help students build mindsets, habits and skills like curiosity, growth mindset, perseverance, self-awareness, self-efficacy, self-regulation and social awareness/ social competence, which emerging research shows are correlated with long-term success.
This policy brief from Transforming Education includes three recommendations for how states and school districts can leverage the flexibility of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to support students’ social, emotional, and academic development.

●● CNN’s report on movement of Parents Opting Out:
https://www.cnn.com/2015/04/17/living/parents-movement-opt-out-of-testing-feat/index.html●● The Perfect Assessment System, by Rick Stiggins calls for the ground-up redevelopment of assessment in US
education. Speaking from more than 40 years of experience in the field, Stiggins maps out the adjustments in practice and culture necessary to generate both accurate accountability data and the specific evidence of individual mastery that will support sound instructional decision making and better learning in the classroom
