Message from the President
By Mark Fleischman, President of the Marina City Club Condominium Owners Association, Inc.
Dear Homeowners and Members,
My last message in the August issue of Marina Lifestyle talked aboutpositive improvements, many of which are in the works. Contracts forrepairing and renovating the pool areas and tennis courts are being
negotiated. Time Warner Cable is in the process of upgrading TVs in the publicareas, fabrics are being selected for seating in the City Café, our attorney’s areworking on necessary by law changes, a colorful brochure is in the works toattract new members to defray expenses, the social committee is busy planningactivities in the Fall, and Seabreeze is in the process of replacing the aerobicsfloor.
On a more serious note, the power outage at the beginning of August in theCenter Towers North and South awakened me to the possibility of what couldhappen if we had a major earthquake as a result of which we could loseelectricity and water for an extended period of time. As individuals, we shouldeach prepare for this eventuality with flashlights, batteries, battery poweredlanterns, food, water, and cell phone chargers that aren’t dependent on power –I just ordered one from Amazon.
Management has assured me that Property Services (Security), will have aguard in each parking structure to guide people to the staircases during any lossof electricity. Additionally, our Engineering Department will be directed to keepemergency lighting on in the garages and hallways throughout the evenings foran extended period of time. An emergency response guide for buildingoccupants will be distributed within the next month to all units.
That emergency guide references a floor warden or building representative inthe case of emergencies and it would be in everyone’s interest for us to havevolunteers acting as either a floor captain or a building warden to help othersduring emergencies. Naturally we will set up trainings at convenient times so thatthese designated people will know what to do in an emergency. I amvolunteering to be one of them and would appreciate hearing from others whomay be interested. To get more information or to sign up, email us [email protected].

to make the stroke better, and that works. As I saidearlier in the year, if youcan practice your serve 2-3times per week, then youcan see improvement overtime. However, the otherproblem I frequently hear is, "Myserve has been great in practice,I'm nailing it! But, whenever I goto play a match, I tighten up andit's good-bye good serve, hellopusher serve." I makes me sad tohear that people cannot enjoytheir new toy, a better serve,
because they get sotensed up in a match. There is a way toduplicate the pressure ofa match when practicingyour serve by yourself. It'sa game you play againstan amazing playernamed Mr. Nobody.
Mr. Nobody is tough, but fair. When you play Mr. Nobody, youserve every point. If you getyour first serve in, you win thepoint and Mr. Nobody loses thepoint, every time. If you missyour first serve, but get yoursecond serve in, Mr. Nobody winsthe point and you lose the point.
If you miss both serves, you losethe game. Play sets. First try towin a set (regular scoring)against Mr. Nobody.
If you do that, then make thegame a little more difficult byrequiring that you hit your firstserve harder. You can do this bysaying, that the second bouncemust be past the baseline or itdoes not qualify as a first serve,so I either do it over or it's a faultand I'm on to the second serve. If you want to make both servesstronger, then put requirementson your second serve as well: It

must also go over the baseline beforethe second bounce or it must haveslice on it. Each time, you can addthings to make the game harder, whileunder the pressure of trying to beat Mr.Nobody in a set or three. There areother ways to modify the basic formatif the harshness of losing games fordouble faults is too much at first, buteventually, you should make everyeffort to play the game as laid outhere to create the pressure of a realmatch.
If you are able to conquer Mr.Nobody 6-0, 6-0, week after week, then you should be on your way tohaving a match ready serve that isimmune, or at least less susceptible tothe whims of match nerves!
