Investing to Win in 2015We have a simple shared aim: to ensure this is a one term opposition, and that we secure an overall victory in May 2015. By bidding in tonight’s auction, you will be directly helping us achieve that.

How you can helpBy bidding in tonight’s live and silent auction or taking part in this evening’s pledge ask you will be supporting the projects listed above, helping to deliver a Labour majority in 2015.

What you will be supporting through bidding: 1. Campaigners on the ground

Thanks to the generosity of members and supporters, we have made an unprecedented investment in our trainee organiser programme during this electoral cycle. We now have over 100 trained, full-time campaign organisers on the ground in our key seats – more than we’ve ever had in any previous electoral cycle – in fact, more organisers per head of the population than Obama had. We know (and we have the evidence to prove it), that these individuals are key to delivering the swing away from the Tories and Lib Dems, and to Labour, that we need to win. 2. The e-election: Digital messaging, campaigning and fundraising

Messaging – There are hundreds of thousands of voters that we need to win over to Labour who we struggle to reach through traditional media channels. Many potential voters have turned off and tuned out: they’ve stopped buying newspapers or watching the news. There is one effective way to connect with these people: through their friends and family via social media platforms like Facebook. Two-thirds of the UK electorate is on Facebook. It is a powerful communications tool precisely because it is personal, driven by networks of family, friends and acquaintances.

Campaigning – We recruited 8,202 new supporters to become offline volunteers. These are the people who our Campaign Organisers deploy on the streets to knock on doors, identify the vote, and deliver them on polling day.

Fundraising - In 2013, our online fundraising total was five times higher than the previous year. We are on target to continue this trajectory of success. 3. Polling

Knowing our voters is key to winning a majority. Polling will be tasked with identifying the winnable and vulnerable voters. How old are they? What is their income level? Did they vote in 2010. Who are they voting for now? The rise of UKIP and the decline of the Lib Dems have fundamentally changed the landscape – our polling/targeting programme will tell us how.

Once we know who our target voters are, we need to identify the issues that concern them, what are the credible solutions that they can believe in – this will drive a strong national message. We will then be able to personalise Labour’s message to individual households and voters – using our campaign organisers on the ground and digital messaging.

SMALL TURN III (2013) Antony Gormley Cast iron 106 x 18 x 19.5 cm Reserve: £100,000

We are delighted to offer Antony Gormley’s stunning SMALL TURN III. In a career spanning nearly 40 years Gormley has received countless awards for his work, including the Turner Prize in 1994, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. Gormley was knighted in the 2014 New Year’s Honours list for services to the arts.

Of his Blockworks series, of which SMALL TURN III forms part, Gormley says:

“..Blockworks describe the space of the body in stacked masses that question its stability. I use the construction language of the built world, pillars and lintels, to evoke the inner condition of the body, treating the body less as a thing than a place. There is a tension between a suggested symmetry and the actual articulation of a body, so that very slight variations in the alignment of the blocks can be read empathetically as an indication of the total body feeling. These pieces attempt to treat the body as a condition: being, not doing.”

Labour Lion (2014) Grayson Perry Ceramic 40 x 27 x 13 cm Reserve: £15,000

Grayson Perry, winner of the 2003 Turner Prize, uses the seductive qualities of ceramics and other art forms to make stealthy comments about societal injustices and hypocrisies, and to explore a variety of historical and contemporary themes. The beauty of his work is what draws us close. Covered with scraffito drawings, handwritten and stencilled texts, photographic transfers and rich glazes, Perry’s detailed pots are deeply alluring. Only when we are up close do we start to absorb narratives that might allude to dark subjects such as environmental disaster or child abuse, and even then the narrative flow can be hard to discern.

Born in Chelmsford, Essex in 1960, Grayson Perry lives and works in London. Perry was the winner of the 2003 Turner Prize, and has had major solo exhibitions, most recently at The British Museum (2011). In 2012 Perry created a series of six new tapestries entitled The Vanity of Small Differences on display at Victoria Miro gallery. The making of these tapestries was chronicled in a 3-part documentary on Channel 4 exploring taste and class within the UK. All in the Best Possible Taste with Grayson Perry was broadcast in June 2012 and won a BAFTA for Best Specialist Factual Programme in 2013. In June 2013 Perry was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

This beautiful ceramic Labour Lion was produced specially for Labour’s Election Gala Dinner 2014 and is a one of a kind item.

Struggle, Red (2014) Nicola Green Reserve: £6,000 Silkscreen Print 132cm x 101.5cm

A unique work specially created for, and donated to, the Labour Party ‘Struggle, Red’ A/P (2014) from Nicola Green’s series ‘In Seven Days…’. Telling the story of Nicola Green’s experience inside Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, the seven iconic prints from ‘In Seven Days’ have been exhibited and bought by galleries across the United States and Europe including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress. Own a piece of history in this exquisite original, one-off silkscreen print ‘Struggle, Red’ which features a hand-painted 24 carat gold hand and comes in a bespoke frame by eminent London framing company John Jones.

“This hand represents the effort, value and strength that over the years have gone into struggles all over the world. The Labour Party has been involved in many of these, from woman’s rights to the anti-apartheid movement. This image is from a sketch of Barack Obama’s hand which I drew on a rainy night in a New Hampshire gym at a rally in 2008. At this time victory seemed very far away, the effort to get to this point and the struggle ahead felt overwhelming. I kept thinking about how each of us has to find our own power through our identity. This image is about the value and strength in that struggle.” Nicola Green
