Presentation Night

Congratulations to all the award winners at last Wednesday’s 2017 Blackburn High School Presentation Night. They embody the School Values of Respect, the pursuit of Excellence and Citizenship. At this significant night that recognises and celebrates outstanding academic achievement and effort for students from Years 7-12, we had a number of special guests attend including: the School Council President Mr Geoff Hugo, Ms Diane Fischer from Bendigo Bank, Mr Campbell Liggins from Charman Partners, the Hon Michael Sukkar MP the federal member for Deakin and Major Nathan Xu from the Australian Defence Force.

The notable student results have been enabled by the school’s strong emphasis on the holistic development of each student through their involvement in the rich academic, co-curricular and student leadership programs and by the contribution of the dedicated professional team of teachers and support staff. In addition, parents, carers and families have been active partners with the school by supporting the learning and development of the students.

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged and inspired the students to believe in themselves and realise their potential.

2017 VCE Results and the Year 12 Class of 2017

We are very proud of this year’s outstanding VCE results and I would like to announce that Allegra De Gleria Clark is the 2017 Dux of Blackburn High School and she achieved an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 99.5, with 14% of students achieving an ATAR of 90 or more and 31% an ATAR of 80. Students also attained 40 or more in their study scores for a range of subjects with the highlight being a perfect 50 in music.

Principal’s Report Farewell to Mr Tim Dalton

Farewell to our much-loved Assistant Principal Mr Tim Dalton who will be taking leave in Term 1 of 2018 and then retiring. The school community recognises and acknowledges Tim’s outstanding contribution to State education over the past 37 years, of which 30 have been at Blackburn High School. He has held a number of positions of responsibility including: 22 years as Assistant Principal, School Council representative, PE coordinator, Sport and student activities coordinator, timetable coordinator and union representative. Tim has been a steadfast advocate for State education and he will be remembered for his strong stance on teacher conditions, a focus on OHS, tirelessly working to improve the school facilities, his passion for history and the Melbourne Footy club. Mr Dalton will be missed.

2017 School Council

On behalf of the Principal Team, thank you to the School Council for its support and contribution to the continual whole school improvement process throughout the year. The Council has worked collaboratively and effectively to achieve a number of important outcomes that will lead to improved student outcomes: raising the parent voice, a more flexible Bring Your Own Device Program, implementing a new student reporting process, implementing a new curriculum model, improved canteen processes, funding the masterplan for Stage 2 Building Program, improving the mode of communication between parents and the school through the introduction of the weekly COMPASS feed bulletins.

The School Council provides a voice for parents and I would like to acknowledge in particular the parent school councillors who have been ably led by the president, Mr Geoff Hugo: Mr Jim Rushby (Vice President-Facilities subcommittee chair), Mr Graham Whyte (Treasurer-Finance subcommittee chair), Ms Tanya Burton (Education & Policy chair), Ms Kim Twigg Ho, Mr Rob Vague, Mr Rowan Gronlund, Ms Nerilee Rinkquest (Promotion & Communication chair), Ms Rebecca Hawkins and Ms Katherine Koh. Thank you also to the Blackburn High School staff members: Mr Tim Dalton, Ms Jane Richards, Ms Nicole Taylor, Ms Arlene Roberts, Mr Martin Baxter and Mr Geoff Vezey. A special acknowledgement to the amazing School Captains Neve Anderson-Vague and Soren Maryasin, who have been great school ambassadors, ably representing the student voice at the School Council throughout the year.

2017-2020 Strategic Plan and new School Values

2017 is the first year of the new strategic plan which is Blackburn High School’s statement to the community about what we stand for and what we intend to do over the next four years to improve student outcomes. It defines what we as a school community value most and sets out our goals, targets and key strategies for improvement. Thank you to all members of the community for contributing to the development of the strategic plan. The new school values of Respect, the pursuit of Excellence and Citizenship in the strategic plan are behaviours, beliefs, and actions that we find important and are a reference point for all members of the school community.

Freeman House Farewell to the class of 2017

As you can tell from the smiling faces in the photos, we farewelled our Year

12s last October with a final House Assembly and the Valedictory Dinner. At

that dinner, we reflected on the contribution they had made to the House

and the school, and I’d like to share my thoughts with you that I spoke about

on that night-

“To the Fantastic Freeman Year 12s, there are two main aspects that I think

characterize the year for me and were my highlights:

Firstly, your participation and involvement in House activities has been really

appreciated. We have loved watching the way you interacted with other

students in the House, from the first day of the year as you welcomed the

new Year 7s, to your leadership in House Performing Arts. Whether it was

being dressed as Horton the elephant conducting the band, or

choreographing the most beautiful dance that showcased all students’

talents, your contributions were outstanding. At Swimming Sports, the diving

competition drew a great deal of attention as one ever so skillfully dived,

another jumped with a great yellow cape flowing behind, while others

bombed to great aplomb! You have often led by example through your

participation, and for that, we applaud you. We thank you for being Mentor

Leaders over the past few years, especially to those who took on the role

this year in their busiest time.

Secondly, on a different note, I have admired from afar the determination

displayed by many of you throughout the year. Quietly going about your

school day, you were engaged in your learning in every lesson, studying in

whatever free space you could find, and importantly, being respectful to all

of us in the House. When we needed eggs and bacon cooked, frying pans

cleaned, students to care for who needed a kind word or two, we knew we

could rely on you. It seemed you were determined to make the most of the

year, and determined to help those around you.”

Freeman House

So, on that note, on behalf of all the Freeman staff,

we wish the class of 2017 good luck and great

fortune.

House Citizenship Awards have been presented to

the following very worthy students:

House Captain 2018

It is with great pleasure that we announce that

Chelsea De Witt will be the Freeman House Captain

for 2018. All of the Freeman staff look forward to

working together with Chelsea to continue

developing a culture of student participation and

involvement.

Finally, on behalf of the Freeman staff, I’d like to

wish you all a safe and happy festive season.

Ms Sharon Gardner-Drummond, House Leader

Hollows House

I would like to thank all students, teachers and families

of Hollows for a fantastic year. Again it has been a busy

year with many highlights. Some of these include:

Our great participation in the House Carnivals in Term 1

Our amazing fundraising effort in Term 2 which saw us

raise more than $4000 for the Hollows Foundation

Our final ‘Luda Zhang’ Memorial Basketball match in

Term 3

Saying farewell to our first group of ‘original’ Hollows

students in Term 4.

I am looking forward to next year when we all come back

energised. We will be welcoming another 50 Hollows

students from various schools at our Orientation Day on

Tuesday and I am sure we will make them feel welcome.

HOUSE MUSIC 2018

Hollows will be doing Shrek for House Performing Arts

next year. We look forward to seeing lots of students on

board and having fun.

HOLLOWS PHOTO

Thanks to Mr Metheringham for organising our massive

2017 Hollows photo. The photo is more than 2 metres

long and will take pride of place in our entrance to the

House along with the 2013 and 2015 photos. See photo

above.

CONGRATULATIONS JACK

Congratulations to Jack Laurie for being named our

Hollows House Captain for 2018. This is a well -deserved

honour for Jack who has been a hard working member

of our house. I would also again like to thank Bridie

Ronalds-Greatbatch for her great work this year.

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Mr Mark Pasquali

House Leader

Melba House FAREWELL

Another Term 4, another amazing year in the House of Melba.

As always, I welcome the opportunity to reflect upon what has been achieved in the school year. Again there have been many happenings, and challenges that have been overcome. They are a testament to the students, parents and staff that form both the Blackburn High School and Melba House communities. This year is particularly poignant for me as I will be moving from the position of Melba House Leader. In 2018, I will be moving to the position of Director of Learning and Teaching which will also mean a move to Dunlop and taking up the role of Mentor Teacher. Looking back at the past six years it is has been a pleasure and a privilege to be part of such a wonderful learning community. I have witnessed Melba grow from an initial community of 180 students and ten Mentor Groups to a very vibrant 330 students and fourteen Mentor Groups. The Mentor Groups have grown in size and responsibility. I am very proud of the respectful manner in which students of all ages engage with each other and the leadership they display in all facets of school life. This would not be possible without the high level of care and support they have been provided by their respective Mentor Group Teachers throughout these years. It is due to this combined effort and passion that we continue to improve and thereby develop a real sense of belonging and community.

Our students continue to show great leadership skills, consistent with our core values.

Finally, once again we all have shown that as individuals and as a community we can, we do and we will continue to make a positive difference in our own lives and the lives of others. We are well along the way to creating a legacy that centres upon a culture and an environment that actively supports and challenges each other to ‘do our personal best’ and nothing less will suffice. So on that note I bid you all a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year and for the final time, “Go Melba”.

Mr Martin Baxter House Leader

MELBA SUCCESS

We would like to celebrate the wonderful achievements of all students in Melba House this year.

Presentation Night was held this week where many Melba students were acknowledged for their

contribution to the school community. It is important for all students in Melba and our school to also

recognise that achievement comes in different shapes and forms. As we conclude another academic

year, we would like to thank all of the parents who have supported their children throughout the year

at Blackburn High School. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated and we look forward to another

positive year in 2018.

Melba House Well Done Lily Williams-Zangmeister We are excited to have Lily Williams-Zangmeister as our 2018 Melba House Captain! Lily is a proven leader with strong ideas about promoting student voice within our House. Lily welcomed the 2018 Year 7 students at the recent Orientation Day! Welcome to 2018 House Leader - Ms Jacinta Marcus We are similarly excited to have Ms Jacinta Marcus join Melba House as our new House Leader. Ms Marcus joins us from Dunlop House, where she was previously the Assistant House Leader. The new leadership team in Melba House for 2018 will be:

Ms Jacinta Marcus – Melba House Leader Mr Peter Schneider – Assistant House Leader Mr Liam Tobin – Assistant House Leader

Orientation Day Our two new classes of Year 7 students spent time in Melba House recently for our Orientation Day. The students were welcomed by our Year 7 student leaders, received their new timetables, toured the school, met some of their new teachers, worked through some challenging ‘ice-breaking’ activities and even had some time trying to figure out how to use their locks. We are excited to have these two classes of Melba students with us in 2018. House Music Well done to all of the students who have been actively involved in the Melba House Music production in 2018. The Melba House students will be performing Tangled. Term 1 will see a range of rehearsals take place outside of academic classes. Eastern Emergency Relief Network On Tuesday 5th December, the Melba House student leaders visited the Eastern Emergency Relief Network to help package 300 Christmas hampers to support local families in need this holiday season. This excursion builds on students’ understanding of citizenship and respect. Mr Peter Schneider Assistant House Leader

Primary School Transition

OLD ORCHARD PRIMARY SCHOOL TRANSITION WEEK

During the week 4th-8th December, a number of Blackburn High School teachers delivered transition lessons at Old Orchard Primary School.

The Decimals’ Choiceboard activities were delivered by Ms Snjezana Torbica, Ms Dale Orders and Ms Rod Bate. Ms Rebecca Bianco engaged the students in an English trivia quiz. Ms Sharon Gardner-Drummond delivered a Humanities lesson covering both History and Geography. Mr Matthew Wirth taught with the assistance of members from the History Club: Cassie, Kelly, Romina and Xavier. Kahlia Norwood and David Coulter ran with the popular Heart Dissection Science experiment. Ms Aimée Pochinco and Mr Ewan Slater presented French lessons. This year, Drama was delivered for the first time, by Mr Zac Cuthbert.

The Old Orchard Primary students were fully engaged in the ‘high school’ learning activities. They now have a better understanding of how subject teachers change at high school and have experienced different teaching and learning styles.

Thank you to the Blackburn High School teachers for their participation.

2017 YEAR 7 STUDENTS GIVE TRANSITION TALKS AT THEIR FORMER PRIMARY

EAL Support Science

Blackburn High School Year 10 students, Viktoria Lonnstedt and Jessica White, had the opportunity to attend the CAASTRO Galaxy Convention in Sydney, accompanied by Dr Louise Hartley. The theme of the Convention was “Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship” and the aim was to give students a taste of how an interest in STEM can lead to a range of exciting careers and chances to run their own businesses.

The students were successful in applying to get their trip fully funded by CAASTRO (The ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics), who paid for them to spend two days in Sydney meeting with students from around Australia, listening to an inspiring range of speakers and building their entrepreneurial skills at workshops. The list of speakers was formidable, including scientists who have collaborated on Nobel-Prize winning projects. Highlights included one of Google’s senior engineers Sally-Ann Williams, Natalie Lawler who is one of the 100 remaining candidates for the Mars 1 Mission and Dharmica Mistry, who turned her PhD into a company that is developing an early test for breast cancer by sampling scalp hair.

It opened our eyes to exciting projects that we can be getting involved with at Blackburn High School, such as Re:Purpose for Good, a project to collect plastic waste from the sea to recycle into 3D printed prosthetic limbs, and the Cuberider project that lets school students send their science experiments to the International Space Station.

It was an exhausting couple of days, but a fantastic opportunity. The Convention ended with a night-time trip to the Sydney Observatory and the rain cleared up just in time for us to see some stars!

Ambassador Pathway – French

Class of 2018

This semester saw the inauguration of the Year 9

Language Elective: the Ambassador Pathway. After

the German program in Semester 1, the French

students embarked on this journey in Semester 2.

The class was a unique opportunity for junior

students to broaden and deepen their knowledge

of French language and culture via topics and

activities that are not always possible within the

mainstream program. These included learning first-

hand about a typical French breakfast of tartine,

which consists of a baguette with a spread

accompanied by a bowlful of hot chocolate for

dunking. (Contrary to the stereotype, croissants are

not an everyday breakfast item in France but rather

are consumed as a special treat on the weekends).

Students also chose an aspect of French culture to

research.

They presented on a diverse range of topics, such

as la patisserie française, les Kanaks de la Nouvelle

Calédonie and the life and work of la Comtesse de

Ségur. Overall it was a privilege to work with such a

delightful cohort of students and I wish them all the

best in their future language studies.

ARTBURN CLOSING PARTY: A HUGE SUCCESS

The ARTBURN exhibition closing party was a huge success on Saturday 25th November where students, parents, teachers and the public celebrated the artworks created and installed by Studio Arts and Media students from Blackburn High School.

It was excellent to see the support from members of the wider school community who came along to the BBQ to celebrate and discuss the artworks presented within the Testing Grounds arts space. We also had the pleasure of listening to a performance by Time No Changes who impressed the crowd with their improvised jazz set. It was an incredible day that highlighted the immense creative talent that we have within our school.

ADOBE HAVE A VOICE PROJECT

Recently Ms Hsu and Ms Carter were interviewed by the Department of Education and Training for their involvement in the Adobe Have a Voice Project which they imbedded into the Multimedia curriculum. The project saw groups of students working collaboratively with Adobe products, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and Animate, to produce a poster, a video documentary or an animation about a topic which was important to the group. VCE Media

VCE MEDIA PRODUCTIONS

2017 marked the first year of VCE Media at Blackburn High School and has been an exciting and rewarding

year for both the students and myself. Throughout the year, the students produced a number of media

products, from re-cut genre trailers and posters, to collaborative short film productions. They also wrangled a

range of new equipment and technologies, from clapboards and boom poles, to Premiere Pro and Photoshop.

In Unit 2, over 10 weeks, the students developed their specialist media production skills in a group short film

task. The class was split into three large production teams and set to task writing treatments, screenplays,

shot lists, storyboards, and preparing their products for production. At the end of it all, they emerged with

three well-produced short films for exhibition.

Sport 2017 - A YEAR IN REVIEW

2017 was a fantastic year for Blackburn High School’s sports

program, seeing a huge increase in participation and

sustained success across all year levels.

Seven teams became Division Champions and progressed

through to the Regional Finals including: Year 7 Boys’

Baseball, Year 7 Girls’ Netball, Year 7 Boys’ Volleyball, Year 7

Girls’ Basketball, Year 8 Boys’ Hockey, Junior Boys’ Netball

and Intermediate Girls’ Hockey.

The outstanding team performance came from the Year 7

Boys’ Baseball team which progressed through to the State

Finals and ultimately were crowned the second best team in

the State, narrowly losing in the final to Strathmore

Secondary College.

Blackburn High School also demonstrated strong

performances across Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country.

The highlight came as we claimed the title for Division

Athletics, whilst also boasting 8 of the 12 Age Champions.

Continuing on from this we placed 8th at the Regional Finals

and 40th in the State Final, fantastic results from all involved.

Well done to all the students who were awarded Age

Champion throughout the year, especially those that

continued on to achieve success at Regional and State Finals.

A special thank you to our two Sport Captains Lauren

Schreiber and Mathew Zukiewicz for their hard work

through the year and also to Carnival Coordinator Nadine

Roche for doing a fantastic job looking after Swimming,

Athletics and Cross Country.

Thank you to all staff, students and parents who have

supported the program over the last year and

congratulations on a successful 2017.

Sport Under the supervision of Mr Bulman, a team of 10 boys in Years 8 & 9 represented Blackburn High School on Thursday, 30th November, in Interschool Ultimate Frisbee. The students showed exceptional sportsmanship and teamwork while battling the wind, which, as they discovered, makes throwing a plastic disc accurately a very challenging endeavour! Due to the fledgling nature of the sport, there were only three schools represented in the competition, however Blackburn High School won every game to claim the title of Eastern Melbourne Regional Champions in their age group. Team members: Nathan Yow, Sean Browitt, Elyas Baeini, Leo Dykes, Jesse McCarthy, Kade Cody, Inigo Lamond, Braydon Ligthart, Kyle Bryan and Pranav Vashisht.
