Primary and Secondary Numeracy Meeting
Building strong and authentic links with our primary school colleagues is an important focus for us at Blackburn High School. On Wednesday 16th October, Ms Shona Mcenaney (Transition Leader) and Mr Tony Lahy (Maths Leader) met with the primary school teachers for their second Primary & Secondary Numeracy meeting at Blackburn High School. The meeting was very well attended with 14 teachers coming from our feeder primary schools to work with each other in relation to strengthening our common assessment practices across our schools. The group is highly excited and engaged about working together more closely and supporting one another to improve assessment practices across our schools. The next meeting will be held in Week 9.

Dunlop House YEAR 12 CELEBRATION DAY AND VALEDICTORY DINNER
Celebrations this year began with our traditional House Breakfast last Thursday 17th October. Each Mentor Group had organised to bring plates of food to share. We had a terrific morning with many delicious fresh foods and juice. We displayed graduating student photos from both Year 7 and Year 12, seeing how much they have changed and grown, and celebrated all the contributions that our Year 12s have made over the past six years. Our student leaders thanked the Year 12s, presenting them with study survival packs that they had made. Thank you to all the staff, students and their families for being so generous and helping to make the breakfast a special celebration for our senior students.
A Year 9-12 Assembly was held on Tuesday 22nd October to acknowledge the work, achievement and contributions that our Year 12 students have made to Blackburn High School over the past six years. Year 12 students were farewelled by the rest of the students with the traditional whole school guard of honour, a wonderful sight to be seen. The celebrations continued with Year 12s gathering for signing of school uniforms and some fun with a giant jumping castle, pizza and ice cream to share. We thank all Year 12s for a wonderful morning enjoyed by all.
Lastly staff, students and their families gathered at the San Remo Ballroom for Valedictory Dinner. I was proud to present each of our Dunlop students with their Blackburn High School graduation certificate and to celebrate their achievements through the evening.
I would like to thank each of our Year 12 students for being a part of Dunlop House. They have played a significant role in helping to shape our House culture. I would especially like to thank our House Captain, Emily Rushby, for taking on this role in her final year of study and also congratulate her for being an outstanding and positive leader and role model for Dunlop students as well as the Mustard Club.
On behalf of all the staff and students of Dunlop House we wish our Year 12 students good luck for the upcoming exams and every happiness and success for the future. We will miss you all!

Congratulations and thank you to Year 7 Leaders Elsa Reynolds, William Glenn, Harvey Irvin, Annie Burnet and Jerry Lauw for being terrific Year 7 school representatives at this year’s Year 6 transition workshops. These students have been excellent ambassadors for the past two weeks, welcoming some of our future Year 7 students to Blackburn High School and supporting them in their first experiences of secondary school classes. Congratulations to our Student Leadership Team who worked together to organize the Year 12 celebration breakfast as well as made Year 12 study survival kits which included homemade stress balls, an inspirational playlist, stress management tips and some extra goodies. The Year 12s loved these thoughtful gifts.
Student Leadership Team House Captain Speeches Congratulations to our 2020 House Captain candidates, Jasmine Lefebure, Annaliese Hughes and Daphne Papamichael. As part of the captaincy process, short listed students are required to give a speech to the Year 8-11 students in Dunlop House. All speeches were highly engaging and showed each student’s passion for Dunlop House. We wish them luck. The House Captain appointment will be announced later in the term.
Ms Claire Greve, Dunlop House Leader
Freeman House We are very proud of the efforts of our many Freeman students who have continued to show excellence in their learning endeavours: Year 8 Learning Norms Award Recipient Elsie Castle Year 9 Academic Excellence Award Recipient Wilson Huynh Year 9 Academic Excellence & Learning Norms Award Recipient—Madelaine Harvey Year 10 Academic Excellence Award Recipients Madeline Aujard, Rubi Reeh, Elliot Shute, Robert Slenders, Alysha Yaacoub Year 10 Learning Norms Award Recipients Madeline Aujard, Brian Chiu, Jasmine Kellock, Olivia Pratesi, Rubi Reeh, Alysha Yaacoub Year 11 Academic Excellence Award Recipient Gemma Goold Year 11 Learning Norms Award Recipient Bethany Gray
We are also very proud of all of the Freeman students who participated in Blackburn’s Got Talent – I just wish they wouldn’t all be so wonderful, making it so hard to judge! Congratulations to the following students: Tink An, Isla Berick, Ashleigh Bowman, Andre Heeraman, Jason Kelly, Inigo Lamond and Alanis Yim.
Freeman House It was with some sadness and excitement that we farewelled the Freeman Year 12 Class of 2019. At a special House Assembly, we were able to reminisce with them as we looked at their Year 7 photos and others from the past few years. A photo booth organised by Ms McDuff was an extra special surprise for them. On their last day of classes, we all enjoyed a pizza lunch together while they opened their time capsules from Year 7, 2013 – there were some hilarious photos and recollections in there! We wish them well in their exams and whatever the future holds for them. The graduating class of 2019 were: Kurtis Barker Elizabeth Becker Ashley Burton Harriet Castle Vanessa Choong Kevin Choi Carla Cremona Hao Wen Deng Kiara Elder Bradley Fong Alyssa Forato Jacinta Friebel-Suhr Yuuri Fujimura Joseph Gerring Matthew Hicks Bruce Hou Andy Hu Pearl Jansz Cameron Jones Roy Josef Andrew Jung Natasha Kate Seth Kawamura Benjamin Kiss Josh Lambert Niran Jack Lauder Livia Li Evita Liu Annie Liu Gandanni Liu Kara Mazzilli Emily McCosh Emily McGuffie Emily Miles Ali Moeini Adam Ollaik Dae Wen Ong Pema Pema Dadon Matthew Skinner Thomas Slocomb Xavier Sun Habibi Tuasikal Nicholas Walker Amber Wang Kynan Whitehead
During Term 4, senior students have the opportunity to apply for leadership roles in the school for 2020. Freeman House had so many fabulous candidates apply for the role of House Captain that the decision to short-list only four, after writing an application and having an interview, was challenging for the House Leadership Team. On Thursday during our Assembly Bethanie Gray, Millie Castor, Georgia Miers and Andre Heeraman delivered their speech to the rest of Freeman House. The students spoke very well and it is going to be a difficult task choosing the best candidate for the role. Good luck to the four students.
Ms Sharon Gardner-Drummond, Freeman House Leader
Hollows House FAREWELL AND GOOD LUCK TO OUR YEAR 12S Our Year 12s had their final Assembly last week which was followed by a Valedictory Dinner with parents and siblings. Our Year 12s began exams this week and we wish them well. We have been proud to have had you as members of our Hollows family and we wish you well in the future.

We now challenge our students to continue to improve their learning throughout Term 4. Keeley Ronalds-Greatbatch and James Patterson Congratulations to Keeley Ronalds-Greatbatch and James Patterson who were both members of the Intermediate Baseball team that won the first ever State Final in Baseball for Blackburn High School last week. Both these boys were outstanding contributors, Keeley as starting pitcher and James as catcher and power hitter. David Goddard Congratulations to David Goddard who received a Silver award for Language perfect. Well done David! Exams/Step Up November is a big month for our students. Beginning on 13th November our Year 10-11 students will undertake exams. This will be followed on 25th November by the Step Up Program where students move into next year’s classes. I encourage our students to work hard during this period and begin the 'new year' on a positive note. Phone Policy Parents should be aware that we will be trialling our new ICT user policy from 25th November. This will mean that mobile phones will not be used at school and must be kept in lockers between 8:30am and 3:15pm. This may cause a big change for some students, so I encourage parents to prepare their child/ren for this change.

Blackburn’s
Got Talent
Once again Blackburn’s Got Talent was a very successful and
popular event. Students and teachers were treated to four heats
and a spectacular Grand Final, concluding the Year 12s last full
week at school. Congratulations to the band BAM!, the winning
act, which took out the competition this year with its engaging and
energetic performances that included fine musicianship, costumes,
acrobatics and even merchandise spruiking.
BAM narrowly beat superstar singers Andre Heeraman and Jericha
Edillon who brought the house down at Thursday’s heat with their
spectacular rendition of Shallow from A Star is Born. Other notable
performances were given by the Coyne brothers with their violin
and viola duo, comedy from Steven Bevz, sensational vocals from
Hannah McAulay and Ashleigh Bowman, a Rubik’s Cube champion
and many, many more.
A huge thank you to the Adrienne Gammune and the amazing Tech
Crew students who set up all the equipment for every show,
Kaitlyn Archer, Melissa McDuff, Adrian Metheringham, Bruce
Wolstenholme, all the students who participated and the teachers
who acted as judges.

Term 4 has been the busiest yet for Inter-school Sport at
Blackburn High School, with a number of Eastern
Metropolitan Region Finals taking place, as well as the last
of the Whitehorse Division Competitions for our Year 7 and
8 students.
Firstly, congratulations to the Year 7 Boys Cricket, Year 7
Girls Tennis and Year 8 Boys Cricket Teams who won their
respective Whitehorse Division Competitions and have all
made it through to the Eastern Metropolitan Finals. Best of
luck with these events!
This term has also seen the EMR Finals for Year 7 and Year 8
Boys Volleyball, Year 8 Girls Basketball and Year 7 Boys
Baseball take place. These students represented the school
to a high standard with great displays of sportsmanship and
enjoyed the competitive atmosphere. The Year 8 Baseball
Team will compete on 7th November – good luck to those
students!
The Year 7 Boys Hockey Team participated in their EMR Final
on 22nd October. They won every game in their Pool A
Round Robin and advanced to the final against Mount
Waverley. The game ended in a draw and went to a penalty
shootout, with Blackburn winning 2-0! The boys will now
complete in the State Final on 19th November at Footscray
Hockey Club. Congratulations for your achievements so far
and we wish you all the best at the State competition!
Lastly, the Intermediate Boys Baseball Team competed in the State Final on 21st October. They too won all their
Pool A Round Robin games and advanced to the final against Parkdale, having already beaten last year’s State
Champs – Dromana. What an incredibly tense game! The boys went into bat for the last innings down 10 runs to 5.
In a great display of ultimate teamwork, the boys managed to tie the game at 10-10 and take it to an extra innings!
With a massive 4th innings effort by our pitcher, James Richardson and fielders like Joel Carter taking epic catches,
the boys went out to bat without conceding any runs. They simply needed one run to win. James Richardson to
the rescue once more with a giant homerun hit!! Intermediate Baseball STATE CHAMPIONS!
A huge congratulations to the boys and a big thank you to Mr Pasquali and student coach Miles Stukenborg! Well
done all!
