This groundbreaking exhibition offers a comparative view of the
two principal viceroyalties of Spanish America—Mexico and
Peru—from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Featuring
some two hundred extraordinary artworks, the exhibition
addresses the continuation of pre-conquest forms and styles after
the conquest, and the multiple contexts in which indigenous
peoples were represented in the colonial period. By taking into
consideration the pre-Columbian—Inca and Aztec—origins of these
two vast geopolitical regions and their continuities and ruptures
over time, Contested Visions offers an arresting perspective on how
art and power intersected in the Spanish colonial world.

contested visionsin the spanish colonial worldOctober was one of the busiest single months in lacma’s history. We opened four exhibitions (California Design, Monet/
Lichtenstein, Mural Remix, and Glenn Ligon) and celebrated the spectacular closing of Tim Burton on Halloween weekend. We saw the launch of our new Film Independent at lacma film series, led by Elvis Mitchell. And of course no one could miss the well-publicized transport of the 340-ton boulder that is to be part of Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass. We also announced plans to help the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences realize its dreams of creating a long-overdue Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles (see News & Highlights).
So much activity last month hardly means we’re slowing down for November and December. I am looking forward to seeing the ambitious exhibition Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World, organized by lacma curator Ilona Katzew, on view in the Resnick Pavilion starting November 6. The exhibition represents lacma’s commitment to the wealth of Latin American art from all periods, and in particular the museum’s efforts in recent years to build an impressive collection of Spanish colonial art, much of which is on view alongside loans from around the world for this extraordinary show.
In addition to our many special exhibitions, our permanent collection galleries continue to transform. In December I am pleased to see objects from our Chinese art collection go on view in the Hammer Building—the first time this collection has been on view in more than five years. Stephen Little, head curator of Chinese art, and assistant curator Christina Yu, have organized a “greatest hits” sampling of our collection, spanning thousands of years through roughly forty beautiful objects.
Finally, be sure to see the small but powerful exhibition, Monet/Lichtenstein, on the third floor of bcam through January 2. There have certainly there never been five of Monet’s Rouen Cathedral paintings in one room in California, and in fact two of these paintings have never been seen anywhere in the United States. The installation, quite simple and quite beautiful, speaks to the fact that over a hundred years ago Monet was working in series, as a very contemporary artist would; at the same time, Roy Lichtenstein’s dot paintings can be seen much more deeply for their beautiful coloristic and painterly qualities. It is a rare and thoughtful exhibition, not to be missed.
lacma and Academy to Develop Film Museum
lacma and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (ampas) have taken a step toward realizing an Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in the historic May Company building, currently known as lacma West. The two organizations have signed a memoran-dum of understanding, paving the way for ampas to begin developing plans for its museum and modifica-tions to the historic site. The Academy hopes to sign a long-term lease for the facility, and will retain auton-omy over all aspects of its museum while benefiting from lacma’s experience in managing a premier arts institution.
Art + Film Gala Honors Clint Eastwood, John Baldessari
On November 5, lacma will hold its inaugural Art + Film Gala, honoring two titans of the art and film worlds—actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood and artist John Baldessari. The evening, co-chaired by actor Leonardo DiCaprio and lacma trustee Eva Chow and sponsored by Gucci, celebrates Los Angeles’s place as the hub of the film industry and an international center for contemporary art. Proceeds from the event will be used to support lacma’s initiative to make film more central to the museum’s curatorial program, while also funding lacma’s broader mission.
Megalith to Arrive Soon
The 340-ton boulder that is to make up one part of Michael Heizer’s monumental artwork Levitated Mass is currently slated to arrive at lacma in early November. Plans to transport one of the largest megalithic objects to be moved since ancient times—from a quarry in Riverside, California—involve a circuitous route through three counties on roads that can accommodate the massive object and its specially built transporter. Once on site, construction crews will complete the 456-foot-long slot in the earth, as well as other finishing touches. Transportation of the boulder is made possible
by Hanjin Shipping Co., Ltd. Visit lacma.org for more coverage of the transportation and news of when Levitated Mass will go on view to the public.
Burden and Nauman Artworks Installed in bcam
As previously reported in Connect, two large-scale artworks are scheduled to go on view in bcam this fall: Chris Burden’s Metropolis II and Bruce Nauman’s For Beginners (all the combinations of the thumb and fingers). Visit lacma.org for details, including opening date and Member Preview Days.
Chinese Collection Opens in December
In December, works from lacma’s Chinese art collec-tion will be on view for the first time in more than five years in the museum’s Hammer Building. The installa-tion features highlights from lacma’s broad collection
above: Ricardo Valverde, Asco Days of the Dead Performance, Termites y Guerro, 1975, collection of Esperanza Valverde
left: Bruce Nauman, For Beginners (all the combinations of the thumb and fingers), 2010, collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Artis, courtesy of Artis
This exhibition was co-organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, Mexico. It was made possible
in part by Camilla Chandler Frost, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Additional support was provided by Alice and Nahum Lainer; Betty and Brack Duker; Ambassador Frank and Kathy Baxter; Carl and Marilynn Thoma Foundation;
Derek Johns, Ltd., London; Coll & Cortés, Madrid; and Janet Dreisen Rappaport.
that spans more than four thousand years, ranging from Neolithic potteries and jades to finely embroi-dered nineteenth-century silk textiles.
Reviews Are in for lacma Exhibitions
lacma’s recently opened exhibitions affiliated with Pacific Standard Time have received praise. The Los Angeles Times called California Design “an uncommonly rich and layered show,” while Asco: Elite of the Obscure is “a thorough and absorbing retrospective” that is “a prime example of the importance of the Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time.” kcrw’s Art Talk called Maria Nordman FILMROOM: SMOKE, 1967–Present “a welcome summer breeze of an installation.” In contrast, the same program called Edward Kienholz’s civil rights work Five Car Stud “an amazingly powerful work” that “will remain unsettlingly relevant as long as we live in a world perpetually rattled by violence.” All four exhibi-tions are on view now.

Spotlight on Aki KaurismakiDecember 8 | 7:30 pm
The delectably sardonic and bittersweet films of Finnish writer-director Aki Kaurismaki remain little seen in the United States (with the exception of his Oscar-nominated 2002 film The Man Without a Past). Kaurismaki’s films are equal parts Beckettian comedy, kitchen-sink melodra-ma, and inebriated Nouvelle Vague lyricism. The double bill features La Vie de Bohème (1992) and Drifting Clouds (1996).
AwaaraDecember 10 | 7:30 pm
