Fighting Hunger. In 1973, the Food Bank began in a 200-square foot garage and used a 1962 truck that was donated to the organization. Tony Collier, a cook at the Grandview Foundation in Pasadena, began collecting and distributing food. Collier received more food donations than anticipated and decided to share food with organizations that helped the hungry. Our History 1,250,000 lbs of food was distributed in 1980, feeding more than 9,000 people a week. Then,We Grew Michael Flood became the new President and CEO of The Food Bank. A capital campaign was launched to purchase two new buildings totaling 41,000 SQ FT • Manufacturers • Distributors • Retailers • Consumers • Government Commodities Food Comes From 1 BILLION One billion pounds of food have been distributed since its inception. LA Food Bank celebrates its 40th anniversary! Celebration 13 Mobile Food Pantry distributions serve 250- 300 households at each distribution. Programs for Children Children learn better with a full stomach. 42 sites and 2,500 kids received healthy meals after school. When school is not in session, the Food Bank expands its program to provide lunch to 8,000 children at 110 sites. Backpack Program This program ensures that children do not go hungry on the days they are not in school. Every Friday during the school year, children receive a backpack full of food for the weekend. More than 2,600 backpacks per week are distributed. After-School Meals This program distributes food to 39 school centers, boys and girls clubs, YMCA’s at an average of 2,800 meals each day. 13 Mobile Food Sites 6 Meals Every Friday The Mobile Food Pantry serves low income families in underserved areas throughout Los Angeles County. The goal of LA Regional Food Bank is to collect and distribute nutritious food to people at risk for hunger in LA County– 4,000 SQ miles with the largest population of any county in the nation. Food is distributed through a network of 680 partner agencies that include food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, and youth and senior centers. By 2015 ... LA Food Bank delivers food kits to more than 23,000 seniors.
