IN THIS IssueIt’s that

time of year again! I can’t believe that the summer has come and gone already.

Welcome to all the new Guiders that are joining us and to all those returning. We couldn’t be the great Area that we are without all of you. Everyone has been doing such an awesome job with the Units that it shows in our current registration numbers. We have more registrations this year at this time than we usually do, with some Districts already close to being full.

As you get together to plan and start the new Guiding year, please keep in mind all the great events that are already planned for you by your Districts, Area and Province (badge days, Muzzeum Sleepover, arts days, etc.). Make sure you keep checking the Provincial website for event updates, you don’t want to miss out on anything!

For those planning on attending GM2016, be sure to keep up with all the updates. If you would like to go but don’t have a patrol of girls to go with — don’t worry! We can find one

within the Area that would love to have you, just let us know you are available.

I wish everyone a fantastic and busy year and look forward to hearing about all of the adventures and achievements in the year to come.

There are some traditional and non-traditional celebrations that Girl Guides participate in, but some are not as well known as others. Each year we all mark our planning calendars for November 11 — Remembrance Day services. We bundle up our girls and attend the local Legion event or head to the Convention Centre downtown. Did you know you can participate in a similar event in May/June? Every year the Legions will hold a Decoration Day parade at the beginning of June. This year some Legions chose May 31 and others June 6 to hold their Decoration Day Parade. The Royal Canadian Legion holds a Decoration Day Parade remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom and a Ceremony at the Field of

Honour for those who returned and have since passed away and were buried here. It is very similar to Remembrance Day with the service being held right at the cenotaph or in the local cemetery depending on the legion. This is in honour of the Veterans who returned from the various conflicts and lived out their lives in the area and were buried here. During the ceremony family and friends place crosses with poppies, supplied by the Legion, on each of the graves or at the cenotaph. Some of these Veterans do not have family members available, so Guides and Scouts are invited to place a cross on a grave or at the cenotaph. This year St. Boniface District Girl Guides had a small contingency of girls attend the May 31 Decoration Day Parade at the Norwood

Legion. The girls carried our flags with honour behind the sea of Scouts. Marla Haring commented “it looks a little Crystal Palace rally-ish with the few Girl Guides behind the big group of Scouts!” Cathy Hirose commented “I love Guiding! It gives you the best moments. Today, our group participated in a Decorations Day (memorial) parade. Our two shyist Sparks were chosen to lay a wreath. One was petrified. The other was OK until the moment came, then she clung to our Guide helper. But with some encouragement, they picked up that wreath and did an AWESOME job. They did it just right, and after they laid their wreath they stood up there, made their Spark sign, and said their promise for good measure. I was blown away. This is what Guiding is all about, people!

In the last year or so there has been a swift decline in the amount of forms are being sent to the provincial office for the appropriate storage. We have a very specific set of guidelines for storage and destruction of our records and we need Units to resume sending us the forms that are indicated in the table below (also available on the provincial website). These forms contain personal information and by not storing them properly we are in a position to be non-compliant with GGCs privacy policy.

The good news is that forms retention is very simple — you just need to take the forms and put them in an envelope by year. You don’t need to sort them by date/event/name. A Unit can send in all their 2014 forms in one envelope and their 2015 forms in another.

Our guidelines are that the forms should be sent in December and June, this allows us to file them accordingly during a non-peak time.

Again, the forms you need to send us are listed below. The forms listed may be floating around the Unit, here are the guidelines for retention:

Form No.

Title Retention Responsible for Retention

H.1 Personal Health Form

End of Validity period or event: Destroy or Return

Unit (secure location)

H.2 Personal Health Form for Adults

None or Return Individual

INS.02 Request for Proof of Insurance

The year it was used for plus one additonal year

Unit

Once the forms are no longer needed they must be returned or destroyed. If Units do not have the resources to do this they can drop their forms at the provincial office for shredding. Of course these should be kept separate from forms that need to be retained.

If you have any questions, please have them contact me. This is a very important piece of our compliance and we must ensure we are following these guidelines.

CWFF Contributions

Congratulations to Kaylee Lucek for being presented with a United Way scholarship. She is a Ranger in the 307th Unit in Transcona. The scholarship was for $500.

For quick reference, the scholarship criteria are:

Academic potential — Awards will be given to full or part-time students who have been accepted to or are attending a post-secondary institution in Winnipeg during the 2014-2015 academic year and are able to demonstrate a commitment to their education.

Demonstrated leadership — The selection committee will look for situations where students

United Way Scholarshiphave challenged themselves in order to influence others and address local community issues that are important to them.

Community involvement —Recipients will be able to demonstrate genuine commitment and connection at a neighbourhood level.

Connection with a United Way funded organization — Awards will be granted to students who have participated, volunteered, or worked with a United Way agency partner.

Financial need — The selection committee will make it a priority to select recipients who have demonstrated a need for financial support.

Katrina Cayer and Kaylee Lucek

Thanks to the units who have contributed to the Canadian World Friendship Fund.

In 2014 Units from Transcona, Northeast and Rosswood Valley donated $706 to CWFF.

As of today $754.05 has been donated — already exceeding last year’s total.

If you haven’t planned your Unit’s activity there is still time!

For every $5.00 collected per girl, a crest can be earned. Here is the link from the MB Council website with the form to complete and submit.www.girlguides.ca/WEB/MB/Volunteers/Guider_Resources/Forms/MB/Volunteers/Guider_Resources/Forms.aspx

Lori (Prairie Valley Office Secretary), and I went out today from 11:30 - 2:00 giving out GGC cookies.

By chance there was a school group from Minnedosa visiting the Legislature and they were our first customers.

We then walked from the Legislature down Broadway and back on both sides and hit up people out for their lunch breaks. Our best customers were construction guys. Many people said “no thanks”, but many people seemed to warm up, when we told them it was a “random act of kindness”. A few people said they were either former members or had children who were in our program.

We then stopped at Agape

Table and gave them a case. They gave us a tour. It would be nice to select them as a group that we support at one of our adult events.

We then went to Assiniboine Credit union and dropped of the remaining cookies that were on our plate, to treat the tellers where we bank.

It is one of these kind of experiences where you never know if there will be a direct benefit, but many people seemed genuinely appreciative.

All units could you please help with a service project for kids helping kids. Children’s Hospital Guild, of which I am a member, is in need of our help. They need used jeans, doesn’t matter if they have holes or colour. We take these and cut them into squares that are made into rag quilts for children that are in hospital for a length of time. They get to take the quilts home when they leave. Over the years we have made many but we are constantly needing more supplies.

Next year we will be making bear ears out of the small pieces we can’t use on quilts. If your units could help by collecting jeans we would appreciate that. You can call me when you have some and I can make arrangements to pick them up.

Thank you so much for helping in advance. Bonnie Patenaude — 204.667.2609 or 204.955.1042

Crocus Trefoil Guildby Marjorie Doyle

The Crocus Trefoil Guild has been busy as usual. We continue to meet monthly and here’s a few photos showing what we’ve been doing.

Two of our members went on an around the world tour of Girl Guide World Centres and showed us their slides and we enjoyed goodies that might be served at each World Centre.

We had an ice cream social to say goodbye to winter and even managed to have a small gathering over the summer at the Half Moon.

These four units in Transcona were very busy in the latter part of the Guiding year. They sold cookies and volunteered with daffodil sales for Cancer Care at Kildonan Place. Some were at the Lady BP event, Disney on Ice, a visit to Petland making Mother’s and Father’s Day gifts as well as learning about pets, and prepared for a Mardi Gras party.
