Trustee Times Staff Over the last several weeks, Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) garages in Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lakes counties inspected, checked and fine-tuned snow removal equipment, as part of county-by-county Operational Readiness Events. This season, District 12 will have 87 plow trucks and 170 trained drivers ready to clear ice and snow from the state’s roadways and bridges. District 12 maintains more than 2,600 lane miles of state highway. “The men and women who clear our roads are highly trained and understand the importance of their job,” said Dennis Albrecht, Jr., District 12 Highway Manage-ment Administrator. “Safety is ODOT’s number one pri-ority and our driver’s understand the importance of keep-ing the traveling public safe during ice and snow storms.” Last winter, District 12 used 65,759 tons of salt to keep highways and bridges safe and passable throughout the season. “Our salt supply is fully stocked for when the first

snow falls,” added Albrecht. Although the calendar still reads October, ODOT is already “Working for Winter” inspecting every snowplow

and salt spreader in its fleet to make sure they are road ready when the first snowflake falls. The reason: a report showing that if Ohio’s transportation system shut down for even just one day because of snow and ice, Ohio workers could lose out

on as much as $200 million in wages and paychecks. Beyond the plows, ODOT will once again remind

drivers that in “Ice and Snow… Take it Slow.” To keep drivers safe this winter, ODOT wants driv-ers to “KNO B4 U GO” with a safe driving “tweet” from Twitter at ODOT_Cleveland. ODOT’s Twitter efforts build upon the success of the department’s premier traffic Web site www.BuckeyeTraf-fic.org. With user-friendly, map-based features, ODOT’s Web site had more than 131 million hits last winter.

Operational Readiness Keeps Ohioans ‘Working for Winter’

Construction Wrap-up, ContinuedFrom Page 1 State Route 2 with no impact to traffic. Major work will resume in mid-March 2011 and the entire project is expected to be complete during the fall of 2012.State Route 91 and U.S. 20 In the City of Willoughby, crews have been hard at work upgrading the busy intersection of State Route 91 and U.S. 20. By the end of November 2010 crews expect to have all lanes open on State Route 91 between State Route 2 and U.S. 20. This configuration will remain in place through the winter as traffic signal work takes place with minimal impacts to traffic. In April 2011 crews will resume major operations and lane restrictions will again be implemented on State Route 91. The entire project is expected to be complete during

the summer of 2011. Willowick Signalization The signalization upgrade project in the City of Wil-

lowick on Lakeshore Boulevard, Vine Street and East 305th Street will also continue into next

year. Over the winter, crews will continue work to upgrade the traffic signals in the area with minor impacts to traffic. This project is funded by the American Recov-ery and Reinvestment Act. The entire project is expected to be complete in June 2011.

Geauga County During the 2010 Construction season, there

were seven active construction projects totaling more than $6 million. Geauga County won’t see any con-struction projects rolling over into 2011, but they did have their fair share of construction this season.
