After years of try-ing to lure commercial development to Lake Country’s downtown, a development propos-al that will include four new commercial build-ings on Main Street, in a vacant lot between the TD Bank and IGA, has received its rst round of approvals from Lake Country council.
e Callahan Group out of Kelowna has re-ceived rst reading for a development permit to construct four commer-cial buildings that will provide up to 27,000 square feet of development on the site.
It’s just the second de-velopment pro-posed for Main
Street since its comple-tion in 2008, the start of an economic down-turn that kept developers from building in Lake
Country.Lake Country’s eco-
nomic development manager says while it’s been a long time coming
for the district’s main street, the new propos-al is a good step forward for the area.
“It means new services, new stores and new jobs for
Lake Country as well as new franchise oppor-tunities and vacant com-mercial space to start businesses,” said Ryan Roycroft.
“It’s just one more development to drive tra c to the area which is nothing but good for other businesses up and down Main street.
“It also shows Lake Country is growing and seen as a vibrant com-
Proposed four buildings for Main Street
munity. Businesses and developers will want to take advantage of that.”
Among the proposed uses for the new com-mercial project on Main Street is a nancial insti-tution as well as a drive-through business.
e developer asked for a variance to allow the drive-through and it was passed, although Coun. Lisa Cameron voted against it as she has with past drive-through applications.
e Main Street de-velopment is one of three commercial develop-ments currently before Lake Country coun-cil and all include drive-throughs.
“ e whole point of Main Street is to get people out of their cars,” said Cameron.
“(But) this is de n-itely a positive. We went through the global eco-nomic downturn which changed the landscape for development. e economy is getting bet-ter and the development on Main Street is a great step.”
Lake Country coun-cil did send the develop-er back to the drawing board in strategy sessions and asked that the pro-posed commercial de-velopment feature doors facing Main Street and not just Highway 97 in an e ort to build Main Street into a pedes-trian-friendly centre.
Along with the Main Street development, there is also a major de-velopment planned at the corner of Highway 97 and Oceola Road

Water quality concerns have come to an end at an Oyama beach.
e poor water quality rating was removed last Fri-day at Pioneer Park on Kalamalka Lake.
“ e water quality samples have been showing closer to the normal rating and sampling and mon-itoring will continue as per the normal routine,” said Karen Miller, District of Lake Country communica-tions o cer.
“It is at moderate currently and after a consistent run of lower results the rating will return to good.”
Swimming was not recommended at Pioneer Park after a poor water quality advisory was initiated July 11. e cause of the poor water quality is unknown.
“Lake Country participates in the egg addling pro-gram annually to control the goose population that seems to like this quiet bay area, but the geese are only one contributing factor,” said Miller.

Camp res are now prohibited in all Cen-tral Okanagan munici-palities.
e ban took e ect last Wednesday and co-incided with similar action announced by the B.C. Ministry of Forests across the Kamloops Fire Centre region.
e ban impacts all B.C. Parks, Crown and private lands, with the Central Okanagan fall-ing within the Kamloops Fire Centre area.
e ban will remain in e ect until further notice, the result of ex-tremely dry conditions and an extended per-iod of hot, dry weath-
er. Open burning has not been allowed in the re-gion since April.
As well, local bylaws prohibit the use of any reworks at any time throughout most areas of the Central Okanagan. Use of reworks in the District of Lake Country and District of West Ke-lowna must be approved in writing by the local re chief. Violators could receive a ne and be charged the cost of the re department response to a burning complaint.

e Canadian Vint-ners Association has an-nounced the results of the inaugural Can-adian Wine Industry Awards and Lake Coun-try’s Gray Monk Es-tates is the recipient of the group’s award of dis-tinction for outstanding leadership, commitment and passion for the ad-vancement of the Can-adian wine industry.
“It is a great hon-our to recognize George and Trudy Heiss of Gray Monk Estates, Brit-ish Columbia’s oldest family owned and oper-ated winery, with the Award of Distinction,” said Tony Stewart, CVA chair and president of Quails’ Gate Winery.
“ e Heiss’ are trail blazers and can be cred-ited with bringing many
high quality vinifera vines to Canada, as well as helping to establish the Vintners Quality Al-liance (VQA).”
e Canadian Vint-ner’s Association awards recognize individuals, or-ganizations and busi-nesses that have gone above and beyond to support and enhance the wine industry in Can-ada, celebrating the suc-cess, leadership and out-standing commitment in Canada’s grape wine in-dustry.
e Award of Dis-tinction is the pree-minent award for the Canadian wine indus-try and regarded as the highest form of peer rec-ognition and apprecia-tion.

Four decades of grape growing and three dec-ades of winemaking have passed for this vi-sionary couple, lled with national and inter-national recognition for their wines. Today, Gray Monk has exceeded 80,000 cases per year of wine production.
Among many accom-plishments, the couple introduced high quality vinifera vines to Canada.
In 1976, they im-ported and planted 50 vines of Pinot Gris from France. ese were the rst plantings of Pinot Gris in Canada, which today is recognized as not only the signature grape of Gray Monk, but
as the top planted white varietal in the Okanagan, with a growing presence across Canada.

e latest dinner in Gatzke Orchard’s Go Foodism series will fea-ture Canadian/Jamaican chef Cornel Fisher for an outdoor roaming four-course meal on Sunday, July 27.
Billed as reggae nights, the third in the Go Foodism series will haver Fisher cooking up Caribbean avours and sprinkling in some story-telling and songs spiced up with local farm in-gredients and wine tast-ings by Arrowleaf Cel-lars.
“Cornel has been con-nected to the Gatzke Orchard for over a dec-ade,” said third genera-tion orchard owner Al Gatzke. “It’s a great mo-ment to have him take part in our Go Food-ism series after hearing me talk about it all these years. Cornel brings a great energy to all our events. Reggae Nights will be very special for sure.”
Gatzke Orchard just hosted its Woodstock Revival music festival for the third year, where
Fisher was a prominent performer on the scene.
“I love working with the Gatzke family,” said Fisher. “ eir orchard is a very special place in the Okanagan Valley and I continue to create more amazing memories each year. is year, Wood-stock was incredible, not only for all the happy hungry people, but for the music as I was able to perform with my seven-year-old son Benjamin Moon. A total of six orchard dinners this year will fea-ture a diverse group of B.C.’s nest chefs taking over the orchard. Fish-er is the third chef fea-tured in the Gatzke Or-chard outdoor, roam-ing dinner series, taking place on the last Sunday of the month, from May through to September.
“Cornel has also been our pizza chef heating up our clay wood burning oven on feel-good Fri-days and at our weddings and music events,” said Joseph Pinheiro, event manager.
“I’ve watched him create beautiful gour-met pizza’s then jump on stage for a set and re-turn to a lineup 20 deep of new pizza/music fans. Even at our weddings he adds an extra element of entertainment and auth-enticity to people’s Oka-nagan experience on our orchard.”
Before dinner, guests will explore the Gatzke property alongside those who raised their dinner
and will be able to har-vest some of the food that will be cooked.
“I can’t wait until July 27so I can cook and sing,” said Fisher. “I’m looking forward to shar-ing the stories and a-vours of some of my fa-vourite Jamaican recipes. It’s going to be a jammin’ good time.”

opinions on issues going
on in our communityWhen the aud-

con rmed a $353 mil-lion surplus for the last scal year, B.C. Liberal political sta were quick to remind reporters of the NDP’s main theme from last year’s election campaign.
Pages of election quotes from almost every NDP MLA were wait-ing to be distributed. It was a “bogus budget,” one of the more polite tags applied to the gov-ernment’s pre-election scal plan.
“It underestimates the costs in a whole bunch of ministries and we’re go-ing to have to review that because all of the deci-sions that we propose in our platform will have to be implemented,” said then-leader Adrian Dix, describing the NDP’s plans to tax and spend more.
Skeena MLA Rob-in Austin targeted health care in the budget de-bate: “Bearing in mind that our population is ac-
tually increasing, bearing in mind that our popula-tion is aging, I think it’s very unrealistic to think we can actually limit health care expenditures to 2.7 per cent.”
As it turned out, health care spending grew by just over two per cent. It still went up by $360 million from the previous year, but after annual increases of six or seven per cent had be-come the norm, this is quite an achievement. New agreements remain to be negotiated with doctors and nurses, so we’re unlikely to see the same cost control results
for the current year.Ottawa’s health care
transfer payment formu-la has changed, and in-creases are to be capped at three per cent a year by 2016, so this is the kind of spending restraint all provinces are expected to produce.
Education was the only other ministry to receive signi cant ex-tra funding last year, up $299 million despite continuing enrolment decline. Like health, the education budget goes up every year, and these increases, along with strong student per-formance results, expose the rhetoric of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation about a cash-starved sys-tem for what it is.
But the biggest fabri-cation of last year’s elec-tion was the “debt free B.C.” slogan emblazoned on the side of Premier Christy Clark’s cam-paign bus.
e public accounts con rm that the prov-ince’s total debt rose to just over $60 billion, the
latest of a series of in-creases since 2008. e much-touted balanced budget is on the operat-ing side, while the prov-ince continues to pile up debt to pay for the Port Mann mega-project, hospitals, schools and other big infrastructure.
Finance Minister Mike de Jong empha-sized the di erence be-tween capital and oper-ating expenditures.
“We’re borrowing to build as opposed to pay-ing for the groceries,” he said.
“Debt free B.C.” was not an outright mis-representation, mere-ly one of the most far-fetched promises ever delivered in the hist-ory of B.C. politics. e legislature is to con-vene in October so the B.C. Liberals can pass a taxation framework for the nascent lique- ed natural gas indus-try, which the govern-ment hopes will generate the revenues to ultim-ately pay o the prov-ince’s $60-billion mort-
gage.Meanwhile there is
more capital debt ahead. e cabinet is expected to green-light the Site C dam on the Peace Riv-er this fall, a decade-long project estimated to cost $8 billion.
Along with the pub-lic accounts, the nance ministry released a list of surplus land sales. e sale of 50-odd proper-ties, some of them closed schools, netted the prov-incial treasury about $310 million, which ac-counts for most of the surplus.
Was this “selling o the family silverware to try and balance the books,” as now-NDP leader John Horgan termed it before the elec-tion? It’s certainly not a revenue source to be matched next year.

in many other forms of life. It’s no coincidence that when we draw our ancestral lineages, we call them a family tree. e tributaries of a riv-er make a root pattern as they ow together; when they reach a del-ta, they branch profusely. Our human circulatory system pumps blood out into smaller and smaller capillaries, then revers-es the process to gather it back for cleansing and
renewal.Even our brains may
work the same way. An impulse res millions of axons and dendrites; the brain lters that input to the neurons most ca-pable of handling it, and feeds back a conscious thought.
We ourselves, when born, have only one con-nection—an umbilical cord to the person whose bodily organs sustained us for nine months. en that connection is sev-ered, and we start build-ing invisible networks of relationships. Conscious-
ness networks, perhaps. Filaments of shared ex-perience which extend farther and grow more complex as we mature.
e pattern seems so universal, I’m tempt-ed to extrapolate from it. For example, to hypoth-esize that growth only happens at the ends and edges.
In our personal lives, that means we need to keep pushing into un-charted territory to keep growing. We need to send out feelers into un-tested theories, unfamil-iar relationships, un-
explored situations, to see if something might take root there.
Also in our corporate lives. Growth does not come from our board-rooms and our head of- ces. e main trunk of any tree is mostly dead-wood. Its sole purpose is to support the growing edges.
e early Christian church, a theology pro-fessor once pointed out, grew at the edges. e new ideas—wheth-er gentiles must ob-serve Jewish law, wheth-er women could be lead-
ers, whether slaves could be free—got fed back from the new Christian communities to the cen-tral core.
Not all new ideas suc-ceeded, of course. Some roots ran into dead ends. But others split the an-cient rocks of tradition and created new ways of living.
e message seems clear—personally and collectively, we need to keep branching out be-yond our comfort zones.

Y et another national study of our healthy
(or not-so-healthy) habits lauds British Col-umbians for our e orts to keep t and get our daily dose of fruits and vegetables. But what’s in-teresting about this latest survey by Statistics Can-ada is its particular focus on Kelowna.
New numbers released in May singled out Ke-lowna-Lake Country for having the lowest rate of obesity in the country, well below the national average of 24.8 per cent. Here’s how we stacked up against other cities:
Kelowna, 17.0 per cent
Vancouver, 17.4 per cent
Victoria, 19.6 per centToronto, 20.2 per centQuébec, 20.9 per centMontréal, 21.5 per
cent.In comparison, obesity
levels tended to be high-er than the national aver-age in the Atlantic prov-inces and in northern and southwestern On-tario:
Saint John, NB, 38.1 per cent
Greater Sudbury, 33.8 per cent
St. John’s, N d., 33.2 per cent
Brantford, 32.1 per cent
Hamilton, 31.3 per cent
Saskatoon, 31.3 per cent
under Bay, Ontario, 30.7 per cent.
It should be noted that StatsCan deter-mines obesity using the body mass index (BMI), which is a relative meas-ure of weight and height. BMI can be comput-ed using self-reported values, where the re-spondent is asked their height and weight, or by directly measuring re-spondents’ height and
weight. Having a BMI of more than 30 deems one ‘obese.’
Kelowna residents can take pride in the fact they are well below the national average when it comes to obesity. Maybe it’s the sunshine we enjoy in abundance, which keeps o the couch and active in our community. Perhaps it’s an increased interest in nutrition, and the careful observation of food labels. Or maybe it’s the easy access to de-licious Okanagan fruits and vegetables, which I may be biased in touting as our province’s Agri-culture Minister!
But while we’ve been recognized as a Can-adian leader in health and wellness, we can and
must do more. Chronic disease is the largest con-tributor to B.C.’s health care costs. Here’s some food for thought: If every British Columbian had a healthy weight, was physically active and didn’t smoke, the Prov-ince could avoid more than $3.8 billion in eco-nomic and health care costs each year.
Smoking and obesity are the highest prevent-able causes of death among British Colum-bians. We must continue to address these issues because left unchecked, our younger generations are in danger of being the rst to live shorter lives than their parents.
It’s critically import-ant that all of us make healthier choices, and our government is com-mitted to making those choices easier. Our $68.7 million Healthy Fam-ilies B.C. strategy focuses on improving the health and wellness of Brit-ish Columbians through programs which aim to decrease tobacco use, in-crease opportunities for physical activity, support healthy eating, and pro-
mote healthy weights. e Healthy Families
B.C. website is a fantastic source of information for those looking to make positive lifestyle chan-ges. From lessons on ‘So-dium 101’ to tips on how to make better selections at the grocery store, there are many helpful tools to be found at www.healthyfamiliesbc.ca.
You’ll also details about our Informed Dining program, which gives restaurant patrons the nutrition informa-tion they need to make informed choices when dining out. You can nd a list of participating res-taurants on the website, or look for the Informed Dining logo inside these restaurants.
We are also investing in various programs that increase access to healthy foods. Examples include the Farmers’ Market Nu-trition Coupon Program, which provides lower-in-come families, pregnant women and seniors with coupons for locally-pro-duced food; the School Fruit and Vegetable Nu-trition Program, which provides fresh fruits
or vegetable snacks to schools every other week; the Food Systems in Re-mote First Nations Pro-ject, which helps remote First Nations grow com-munity gardens; and Food Skills for Fam-ilies, a hands-on program with the Canadian Dia-betes Association that teaches healthy eating, shopping and cooking.
While we can take pride in our collective ef-forts here in B.C. and particularly in the Oka-nagan, I leave you with a troubling statistic: e
number of obese Can-adians has risen 17.5 per cent since 2003. at’s a staggering number. To-day, one in four Can-adians is overweight.
Let’s continue to buck this trend, and set the ex-ample for our friends and neighbours across the country. Keep up the good work, Okanagan.

To the editor:Regarding the article
of frustration with the District of Lake Country (DCL) (Land Owner Frustrated by Lack of Water Service on Lot, July 16 Lake Country Calendar.
Mayor James Baker says his land has been surveyed for a possible water right-of-way—that is correct only be-cause he was going to subdivide his property.
en he let the applica-tion expire along with the right-of-way. is action does not assist the district to establish a water line through his property.
Last year the DCL planning and develop-ment department sug-gested that we private-ly negotiate with May-er Baker for a Statutory Right-Of-Way, yet as-semble it in the dis-trict’s name and use the
municipality’s Stan-dard Document Tem-plate. is is absurd. I am sure this is not an ac-cepted process and adds to the complication DCL seems to be creat-ing around this issue.
We are also in favour of a full six-inch exten-sion of the Lake Pine Water System, i.e. re hydrant etc. at our ease-ment roadway.
is water line would serve more than our two lots. e excavation and installation of this six-inch water line, complete with a re hydrant, could have been completed in three weeks.
All ve lots in this area, need service and have signed a petition indicating they prefer this line instead of wait-
ing—who knows how long—for DCL to de-cide when they can take over the existing small Moberly Water Sys-tem? is line to service our ve lots, could be ex-tended in the future, to service the other six lots of the existing Mober-ly system on this ease-ment road.
e district applied for a $10,000 grant from the Infrastructure Grant Program (IPGP), which is funded by the Min-istry of Community, Sport and Cultural De-velopment from Vic-toria. is money was to be used to study how to bring the Moberly Water System into the Lake Pine System. e study would be done by an in-dependent consultant.
e decision on the grant was to be made in March 2014 and an-nounced in April 2014. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned this to a prin-cipal of the Moberly sys-tem and he was surprised to hear this, as it was all news to him.
e mayor claimed that the Moberly system had petitioned DCL about taking over their water system—this is a fallacy. Over the years, they may have talked about doing something but no signed petition has been given to DCL
e district has taken it upon itself to use this study to postpone a more positive approach and service our ve lots now, then extend the six inch water line to service the
other part of the Mober-ly system, if and when those lot owners agree to pay the added costs of an upgrade.
On June 11, 2014, I asked Mayor Baker, in an email, what the status was for the funds and the study. I am still waiting for a reply. is is just one example of how un-cooperative DCL seems to be.
During a meeting with the mayor and the consultant, they did not have proper drawings of the service area to aid a constructive conversation about the water system.
is leads me to ques-tion their intent to solve this issue.
e lack of communi-cation and non-response to inquiries has been un-
conscionable. is is not a productive, ami-able way to treat a tax-payer that has spend al-most $30,000 in prop-erty taxes and supporting the district over the years.
e latest feedback we have had from the sta of DCL is, frankly, they feel we should be given our money back and for-get it.
So much for positive and constructive think-ing.
With an attitude like this, I can see why they needed to lay o a build-ing inspector and also have a lot of vacant com-mercial property along Main Street.

When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.
“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”
Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheel-in shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.
I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”
Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

Her derby name is Major Psycho but she is anything but.
It’s a play on words for Kelowna’s Winona Phil-lips, a 34 year old moth-er of two.
But when she hits the oor as a member of the Okanagan Derby Dolls, one of three teams that skate in the Okanagan Shuswap Roller Derby Association, she tends to live up to the name, leav-ing it all out there on the oor in the growing sport of roller derby.
Like many, Phillips uses the sport as an out-let from the hectic pace of everyday life.
“Derby absolutely is a physical outlet for me,” said Phillips. a psych-ology major at UBC Okanagan. “I have two kids and a loving hus-band and I study full time so it’s a great work-out and something like derby to take my mind o of things is nice. In derby you absolutely
must be paying attention to what’s happening on
the track or you could be caught o guard.”
e Okanagan Derby Dolls are holding a re-
cruitment drive this Au-gust, looking for more
players to join their team and keep the league vi-brant.
Phillips herself was once one of the new-bies—called fresh meat in derby lingo—as she began training in June of
last year and has never looked back, adding the adventure in roller derby has been inspiring.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat question would
you like a qualified professional to answer?
Q: Dr. Jung:
A:
My adult daughter is pretty common sense about most things, but not her teeth. She wants them to be 'Liberace white' (my term for it) and has no hesitation whatsoever to do whatever she can to make them whiter. On the other hand, she doesn't often see a dentist. Her last whitening experience was at a hair dresser's shop in Vancouver. I see her wincing when she drinks anything hot or cold. Can she be doing any permanent damage here?
That is entirely possible. We do see some misguided attempts to 'beautify' oneself that result in more whitening than healthy teeth are designed to endure. First off, not everything that results in discolouring or staining of teeth can be removed. Yes, a thorough hygiene visit takes care of much of it – but as we put it in dentistry – sometimes 'life just gets in the way'. Coffee, red wine and tobacco all take a toll on the colour of teeth. Nonprescription drug use can destroy the health of teeth in a heartbeat, and the appearance is the first casualty. To counteract this damage, some patients choose excessive whitening and will chase one whitening special after another in search of the perfect smile. This can result in teeth actually appearing darker as it turns the teeth more translucent. All of this is dependent on the individual, and thickness of enamel, shape of the teeth, and other factors such as genetics come into play. One family I met has a genetic history of short lived teeth. Everyone was in full dentures in
early adulthood. Their mouths were very acidic, which resulted in deterioration of the enamel and constant cavities. Compounding that problem was heavy cigarette smoking on all but the mother's part – and one son who actually wanted to have dental implants was a poor candidate because he refused to cut down on his tobacco usage.
I would recommend your daughter have a comprehensive exam with a dentist she trusts. He or she will be able to make clinical recommendations on what she should do or should avoid in her quest for perfect teeth. Our main concern is always health and function. Putting appearance first is like going to the racetrack and betting on the horse with the star on its nose, or detailing a car that has a blown engine. Once we determine that a patient has the best chance for stable oral health we will gladly address the cosmetics, but in that order. We're not naïve enough to deny that many people only go to a dentist when something hurts. Damage can be accumulating for years before your body actually translates that into a toothache. We're experts in repairing damage that both Father Time and our own patients inflict on themselves. Only a professional dental exam will determine whether your daughter's discomfort is a result of her vanity and whitening adventures – or whether or not there is an underlying and undiagnosed dental issue causing her problems that are not yet visible. It sounds like she likes her teeth – we would just like to see them last a long time as well!

I recently got something in my eye while out in the garden - is this something I should be concerned about? Gardening related eye-injuries are certainly something that we as optometrists have to be especially careful about. While typical foreign bodies
in the eye come with the risk of bacterial infection, plant matter can often be covered in fungal material - which is much harder for our eyes’ natural defenses to neutralize. As a result of this, it’s very important to have any type of persistent organic matter in the eye evaluated and treated quickly, so as to avoid any lasting corneal scarring or damage. One way to reduce the incidence of these events it to always wear safety, prescription or sunglasses while out making your garden shine.

What are the basics I need to know about staging our home for sale? Here are three top staging tips that will have you on your way to showcasing your home and making that sale.
First, you want your home to be appealing from the curb. A well maintained exterior and tidy landscaping will make a great rst impression, inviting them in to see more.
Second, create your home’s special ambiance. From the moment a potential buyer walks in the door, you want them to feel at home. Paying extra attention to scent and sound can be very effective. I always like
to recommend a cinnamon or vanilla scent and spa music to set the stage.
Third, your home’s shine is extremely important. Often, it is the small, overlooked details that are critical to a home’s overall appeal. Some of these items are; clean windows inside and out, polished chrome faucets and mirrors, clean refrigerator, dust free ceiling fan blades and light xtures. Finally, make sure that you replace worn area rugs and hang up fresh or new towels.
Remember, these three tips are a great start to effective home staging and creating that all important rst impression on potential buyers. Your Realtor will be able to provide more staging tips and can also provide the critical eye that you will need to make the most of your home sale.

Moses and his people were in the desert, but what was he going to do with them? They had to be fed, and fed is what he did, according to the Quartermaster General in the Army.
It reported that Moses would have to have 1500 tons of food each day. Do you know that to bring that much food each day, two freight trains, each a mile long, would be required!
Besides you must remember they were in the desert, so they would have to have rewood to use in cooking the food. This would take 4000 tons of wood and a few more freight trains, each a mile long for one day.
And just think they were forty years in transit.
And oh yes! They would have to have water. If they only had enough to drink and wash a few dishes, it would take 11,000,000 gallons each day, and a freight train with tank cars, 1800 miles long, just to bring water!
And another thing! They had to get across the Red Sea at night.
Now if they went on a narrow path, double le, the line would be 800 miles long and would require 35 days and nights to get through. So, there had to be a space in the Red Sea 3 miles wide so that they could walk 5000 abreast to get over in one night.
But then, there is another problem.
Each time they camped at the end of the day, a campground two-thirds the size of Rhode Island was required, or a total of 750 square miles long... think of it! This space just for nightly camping.
Do you think Moses gures all this out before he left Egypt? I think not! You see Moses believed in Jehovah. Jehovah took care of these things for him.
Now do you think Jehovah has any problems taking care of all your needs?
Hope you enjoy this... Think of how awesome our Heavenly Father Jehovah is!

news
A shortage of work-ers to pick and sort fruit in the Okanagan during the current cherry season and the upcoming apple season has prompted a call from the B.C. Fruit Growers’ Association for more pickers.
e local fruit growers co-op is also placing ads looking for workers.
According to BCF-
GA general manager Glen Lucas, an esti-mated 3,000 workers are needed for the cherry harvest, which typically runs until Aug. 15.
Another 1,500 are needed for packing.
Lucas said while about half the number needed for picking typ-ically come from other countries, such as Mex-
ico and several Carib-bean nations, the pro-gram that the fruit grow-ing industry uses to provide farmers with help needs more B.C. and Canadian pickers.
Unlike the foreign worker program for the mining industry in B.C., which recently hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons because
of how foreign workers were treated, both Lucas and BCFGA president Fred Steele said the for-eign worker program for orchardists is di erent, with far more checks and balances.
e farmers’ version includes the employ-er and foreign employee, as well as the Canadian government and the
government of the work-er’s home country.
According to Steele, the program has worked well but he would like to see more jobs for Can-adian workers, and that is where the labour short-age appears to be.
When it comes to apples, the season typ-ically starts in Septem-ber, said Lucas, and an
estimated 900 season-al workers will be need-ed for the harvest this year. Another 400 will be needed for packing.
In both the case of cherries and apples, Lu-cas and Steele said it ap-pears that while there is the work, there are not the workers available to ll all the jobs this year.
Last week the BCF-
GA employee who co-ordinates the program that matches work-ers with jobs, told Lucas that one farm alone had placed an order for 30 workers but they are no-where to be found.
Steele said he believes the use of foreign work-ers should be a “supple-ment” to providing jobs for Canadians.
Fruit growers need more pickers for current cherry crop and apples coming up
