Students attending George Elliot Secondary School in Lake Coun-try won’t have to go far to gure out exactly who George Elliot was.
e Lake Country Museum and George Elliot Secondary School have unveiled an exhib-it at the school, taking a look at the man who the school is named after, and telling his story.
e exhibit includes photographs and person-al items belonging to El-liot including his wal-let, professional teacher’s card and licenses, gym whistle, pen and note-book. e items on dis-play were recently donat-ed to the Lake Country Museum by the Elliot family.
“ is is a great oppor-tunity for our students to learn about local history; rather than just thinking of their school as a name, they now can learn about the man behind the name and the values he stood for,” said Lea. “We look forward to working with the Lake Country Museum through future projects.”
George Elliot was born in Paisley, Ontario in 1902 and moved to Vancouver when he was 12 years old. After com-pleting his education, he taught in Mapes (Van-derhoof area) for six
months before secur-ing his position at Win- eld Public School in 1923. e school had two classes, the junior grades, 1 through 4 and senior grades, 5 through 8. Elliot served as teach-er and principal at Win- eld Public School for 26 years, now home to the Lake Country Boys and Girls Club and com-munity organizations.
Elliot married Dor-othy Monford of Kelow-na in 1924. ey had two sons, Alan and Doug, and the family lived in the teacherage beside the school for a number of years.
Elliot shared his love of sports with his sons and took the boys shing in Joe Rich during sum-mers.
In addition to his work as teacher and
principal for the com-munity, he was involved in many aspects of com-munity service. He was a member of the Farm-er’s Institute and he held the o ce of presi-dent and secretary of the Community Hall Board where he was instru-mental in the building of the Win eld Memorial Hall. Elliot also organ-ized the Eureka Branch of the Canadian Red Cross, the rst in British Columbia.
Although Elliot had asthma, he was a skilled athlete, a dedicated coach and umpire. He was one of the organiz-ers of the Rural Schools Track Meets. He had a passion for baseball and was the captain of the lo-cal team for several years.
It is said that he se-cured his job as teach-
er at the Win eld Pub-lic School when Tom Duggan, secretary of the school board, realized that he played baseball in Vancouver and would be an asset to the local team. Elliot also enjoyed play-ing badminton at the old Seaton Packinghouse.
In 1949, at the age of 48, Elliot died during treatment of asthma in Kelowna General Hos-pital.
Derek Lea, princi-pal of George Elliot Sec-ondary School, worked closely with the Lake Country Museum to de-velop the exhibit.
Museum curator Dan Bruce said the school played a big part in get-ting the exhibit together.
“ is is a signi -cant exhibit for the mu-seum and the school,” said Bruce. “George El-liot was instrumental in the community-building of Lake Country and the opportunity to present his history at the school named after him has been incredibly reward-ing. e museum espe-cially thanks museum volunteer Karen Gib-bons for designing the exhibit.”
 e exhibit opening
was hosted by George Elliot Secondary School principal Derek Lea and sta , and attended by El-liot’s son Alan (of Ke-lowna), daughter-in-law Jean (son Doug died in Win eld), and grand-children Jim (Win eld), and Dave and Audrey (Kelowna), museum sta and directors and Mayor James Baker.
For more information about the exhibit or local history, you can contact the Lake Country Mu-seum at 250-766-0111 or go to the web site at www.lakecountrymus-eum.com.

Lake Country coun-cil has gone against a recommendation from its sta and will force a veteran Lake Country builder to go back and alter the construction of
a massive house in Oka-nagan Centre to bring it into compliance with Lake Country bylaws.
at’s despite the fact that the builder—who requested his name be withheld from publica-tion—was erroneous-
ly given the OK to build the house from sta at the District of Lake Country (DLC).
DLC sta origin-ally approved plans for the house in Oka-nagan Centre but after it was built to the fram-
ing stage, including shin-gling the roof, the DLC realized the eave of the home’s roof encroached on the allowable two metre setback from the neighbouring property line.
Under DLC bylaws,
an eave may encroach two feet into that allow-able zone but the district found that this particu-lar eave was encroaching about three feet.
DLC sta told coun-cil it shared the blame with the builder, admit-
ting that sta had missed the encroachment in the development pro-cess. Planner Mark Koch also said it’s up to the de-veloper to know the cur-rent bylaws and stated

both parties had made a mistake.
“It’s mind-boggling that we are sitting here talking about a vari-ance on a house that is three-quarters built and now we’re trying to nd out what to do with this mess,” said Lake Coun-try Coun. Rob Geier.
DLC sta recom-mended that council al-low the eaves to protrude into the setback by the extra foot, which would keep the builder from having to go back several steps in the building pro-cess to make the eaves smaller.
“I apologize for put-ting us all in this pos-ition,” the builder told council. “But I paid a fee of $5,000 and for that fee I think I have the right to expect some level of guidance through the
process. Your sta ob-viously failed but it’s a shared responsibility and I’m here to take my share of it. But I don’t believe its fair that I should have the whole burden.”
But council wasn’t in a sharing mood and de-cided to hold the de-veloper accountable for the mistake, even though sta said not allowing the variance would like-ly a ect sta workload and could be an expen-sive venture for the de-veloper.
Council denied the recommendation from sta and told the de-veloper he would need to make the changes and pay for them himself.
“To cut a roof o that has already been shin-gled is not an easy chore,” the developer said.

intergovernmental af-fairs will have him work-ing with the provincial Intergovernmental Re-lations Secretariat in the premier’s o ce to fur-ther the interests of B.C. at intergovernmental events. He said he will talk with other MLAs who have held the pos-ition in the past, such as Chilliwack’s John Les, to learn more about what he will be doing.
It is unclear if Letnick will be able to resume his chairmanship of a legis-lative committee Clark appointed him to before he entered cabinet that was in charge of looking at the future of health care in B.C.
“We’ll have to wait until the committee ap-pointments are an-nounced next week,” said Letnick.
On Friday, he wasn’t
sure if his position as a parliamentary secretary would preclude that. He had to give up the chair-manship of the com-mittee when he became agriculture minister.
Despite his departure from cabinet, Letnick said he was “ red up” by the result of the elec-tion and ready get back to work as MLA for Ke-lowna-Lake Country.
omson said he is ready to “hit the ground running” once he is sworn back into cabinet on Monday.
He said he expects to continue the work he started as the minister in the last Liberal govern-ment, noting both the environmental and eco-nomic impact his min-istry has on B.C.
“I’m really pleased with the con dence the premier has shown in me

e Central Oka-nagan’s representation at the B.C. cabinet table has decreased.
But, while it will have two fewer cabinet min-isters than it did pri-or to the May 14 elec-tion, if the B.C. Liberals have their way it will add the most powerful voice of all in the B.C. cabinet, Premier Christy Clark.
Clark plans to run in a byelection in the West-side-Kelowna riding in a vote that could happen as soon as mid-July.
Of the three local Liberals elected here last month, only Kelow-na-Mission MLA Steve omson was reap-
pointed to cabinet on Friday. He has retained his forests, lands and nat-ural resource operations portfolio.
Kelowna-Lake Coun-try MLA Norm Letnick, the former agriculture minister, was replaced in that portfolio by Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm. Letnick, however, was appointed Clark’s parliamentary secretary for intergovernmental a airs.
Letnick, who only learned of his new pos-ition ursday afternoon, said he has yet to nd out what it will entail.
A government news release said the position of parliamentary secre-tary to the premier for
Letnick assigned to intergovernmental affairs by Clarkby re-appointing me to this ministry,” omson said following Clark’s introduction of her new cabinet Friday.
While he is disappointed Letnick will not be rejoining him at the cabinet table, omson said he ex-pects Letnick will play a big role in his position as parliamentary secretary to the premier for inter-governmental a airs.
He said they worked closely together in the past, and he does not ex-pect that to change.

Here’s the scenario. I have a really interesting conversation with a chap who’s deep into quantum physics.
We talk about the way the CERN Large Had-ron Collider underneath the Alps has identi ed previously unknown par-ticles.
He explains how, the further you delve into the internals of an atom, the less it looks like a mech-anical arrangement, the more it looks like some-one’s thought.
I say something like,
“Amazing, isn’t it, that it takes $10 billion for physicists to come up with the same metaphor that theologians hypoth-esized centuries ago.”
“I don’t buy that reli-gious crap,” he snaps, and stomps away.
Over many years, I’ve had the same outcome in conversations with en-vironmentalists, biol-ogists, psychologists, mathematicians, geolo-gists. As soon as I con-nect their science to any-thing religious, they’re sure I believe in an old man sitting on a cloud, strumming a harp, occa-sionally ring thunder-bolts at miscreants below.
ey discarded that notion long ago. ey don’t stick around long enough to discover that I don’t believe in that kind of God either.
For the record, I believe wholehearted-ly, whole-bodiedly, that Something exists—

We want to hear your
opinions on issues going
on in our communityAs she unveiled
her new cabinet, Premier Christy
Clark promised a “line-by-line” review of gov-ernment spending to de-liver a balanced budget this year.
Statements such as this would have more credibility if politicians subjected their own per-sonal spending to the same scrutiny. at’s still not happening in B.C.
Expense account-ability has come a long way in the last year, thanks mainly to the work of now-depart-ed Auditor General John Doyle, who swung the cobweb-covered door open on B.C.’s secret-ive Legislative Assem-bly Management Com-mittee. Chaired by the speaker and run by sen-ior MLAs from both parties, the committee had been doing pretty much whatever it want-ed with MLAs’ own ex-penses.
Doyle’s audit found that MLA credit card
bills were being paid without receipts, part of a lax accounting system that included inaccur-ate bank records and in-adequate management of the legislature gift shop and dining room. e operating budget of the legislature and constitu-encies runs to more than $60 million a year.
Now-retired speak-er Bill Bariso asked the auditor to give a pass to the $119,000 annual al-lowance for each of the 85 constituency o ces. Transfer amounts and payroll expenses were veri ed, but constituency
expenses were not, like-ly because these records weren’t kept either.
I’m not suggesting that there has been any misuse of public funds. e point is we don’t know, and the notion of an “honour system” for politicians’ expenses has become unacceptable.
A similar toxic tale has been unfolding in the Senate in Ottawa. It has its own secret-ive committee called the Board of Internal Econ-omy, which was forced into the open after trying to sweep Senator Mike Du y’s housing claims under the red rug of the Senate chamber.
Du y has lived in Ot-tawa for decades, rst as a TV host and then sen-ator, but he decided the rules were loose enough that he could claim his summer place in Prince Edward Island as his principal residence. An audit has also found he was claiming living ex-penses in Ottawa while campaigning for the
Conservatives back east. It turns out the key in-gredient in an honour system is honour.
is mess goes back more than a century in B.C. and Canada, and has its roots in the Brit-ish Parliament, where MPs and Lords had a system of claiming all sorts of expenses, in-cluding construction of a “duck house” and main-tenance of the moat around an Honourable Member’s castle.
Many years ago, Brit-ish MPs convinced themselves that they were underpaid, and rather than create a pub-lic fuss by giving them-selves a big raise, they would be able to top it up by claiming up to 250 pounds at a time without receipts. Cheers!
You can imagine how well that worked out. As one observer put it, the system was not only open to abuse, it was ac-tually designed for it.
Here in B.C., the next step is obvious. If you go
to the website of Alberta Premier Alison Redford, you can easily nd the link to her detailed ex-pense reports, itemized for travel, meals, hotel rooms and so forth. Al-berta cabinet ministers provide the same disclo-sure.
B.C. cabinet ministers’ travel expenses are now reported, but only as an occasional lump sum.
As a result of Doyle’s revelations last summer, B.C.’s Legislative As-sembly Management Committee now meets in public, with transcripts of proceedings available. But MLA expenses are still not itemized. Total expenditures are being reported on a quarter-ly basis, but with no de-tail to explain why some MLAs have much high-er totals than others.
It’s time to sweep out the cobwebs.

Getting rid of useless clutter Something which I hap-
pen to call God. I don’t know what it is. I can’t de ne it. Occasional-ly, I get a glimpse of that Great Whatever. I spend the rest of my thinking moments trying to t those glimpses into a co-herent pattern.
I’m a lot clearer about what I don’t believe any-more.
I don’t believe that Something meddles in natural a airs. It doesn’t cause tsunamis and tor-nadoes. It doesn’t make buildings fall and factor-ies explode. And it cer-tainly doesn’t save one or two favoured souls be-cause they happen to re-cite the right passwords.
I don’t believe that Something keeps an ac-counting ledger, record-ing every word and deed in plus and minus col-umns. It does not dis-pense cancer and famine as punishment; it does not dole out megadollars as rewards.
It follows, then, that a Great Accountant does not dispatch us to eternal bliss or eternal punish-ment after a nal audit.
I do not believe that
the Great Whatever lives outside the natur-al world. It is vested—in-vested—in everything around us. Including us.
And yet, whatever It is, loves me. As the old gospel song says: “Even me.”
I don’t believe that Whatever wound up the universe in 4004 B.C. and set it ticking on a predetermined path. Even earthworms make choices. ey are not mindless robots. Nei-ther are we. If we genu-inely have free will, then not even God can know in advance what we will choose, and what e ects the spreading ripples of our choices will have.
I do not believe that this universal presence
can be de ned by a sin-gle text. Not even if you call it the Holy Bible. e Bible itself is not holy. It is the record of one people’s fumbling encounters with e Holy. It re ects cultural understandings (or mis-understandings) of the period when each part was written.
I have not stopped believing. I have sim-ply shed some accretions that once got in the way of truly sensing the real-ity of God’s presence.
Whatever God is, that Whatever has become the absolute constant in my life.

Here’s a bit of good news—the Organ-
ization for Econom-ic Co-operation and De-velopment’s (OECD) 2013 Better Life Index just ranked Canada third among 36 countries (34 OECD countries plus Brazil and Russia), up from sixth place last year.
e mission of the OECD is to promote policies that will improve the economic and so-cial well-being of people around the world.
Since the index’s in-ception, Canada has ranked near or at the top of each measured area, together with Aus-tralia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the United States.
e OECD Better Life Index assesses hous-ing, income, jobs, com-munity, education, en-vironment, civic en-gagement, health, life satisfaction, safety and work-life balance.
Key ndings in this year’s index are:
• Canadians are more satis ed with their lives than the OECD aver-age, with 82 per cent of people saying they have more positive experien-
ces in an average day.• In Canada, the aver-
age household net-ad-justed disposable income is $28,194 US a year, more than the OECD average of $23,047 a year.
• More than 72 per cent of people aged 15 to 64 in Canada have a paid job, a higher rate than the OECD employment average of 66 per cent.
• People in Canada work 1,702 hours a year, less than most people in other OECD countries, who work an average of 1,776 hours.
• In Canada, 88 per-cent of adults aged 25-64 have earned the equiva-lent of a high-school degree, well above the OECD average of 74 per cent; furthermore, 90 per cent of Canadian
women have completed high school.
• e average Can-adian student scored 527 in reading literacy, math and science in the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment. is score is higher than the OECD average of 497, mak-ing Canada one of the strongest OECD coun-tries in terms of student skills.
• Life expectancy at birth in Canada is 81 years, one year higher than the OECD average of 80 years.
• Across Canada, the level of atmospher-ic PM10—tiny air-pol-lutant particles small enough to enter and
cause damage to the lungs—is 16 micro-grams per cubic metre, considerably lower than the OECD average of 22 micrograms per cubic metre.
• Some 89 per cent of Canadians say they are satis ed with the qual-ity of their water, a high-er rate than the OECD average of 84 per cent.
• Some 94 per cent of Canadians believe they know someone they could rely on in time of need, higher than the OECD average of 90 per cent.
A big part of this na-tional success has to be attributed to the com-mitment and support provided at the local level by community organ-izations and volunteers across the country.
In Kelowna-Lake Country, we are bless-ed with a number of top notch community organ-izations that work tire-lessly to improve the lives of others.
In fact, some of the most important are those that support and are sup-ported by our seniors.

Goldie is a wonderful young dog who is good with most other dogs and children of all ages. She is a high energy who needs to have
lengthy exercise every day to be the best dog she is. Once she is exercised, she settles down quite nicely and turns into an affectionate cuddle-bug. She loves romping in the backyard and just comes bounding to you when you call her name. Goldie has learned some basic commands of “Sit”, “Lay Down” and “Shake a Paw”. Your family will be adopting a well-rounded dog who will give you years of love (and yes, exercise too). Please ask the Kelowna SPCA Staff to meet Goldie one-on-one....you won’t be disappointed.Goldie
Every day, in thou-sands of communities across the country, Can-adian seniors are mak-ing a di erence by shar-ing their diverse skills, knowledge and experien-ces with others through volunteerism and men-toring.
In honour of their contribution, on May 22, Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors), launched the 2013–14 New Hor-izons for Seniors Pro-gram (NHSP) call for proposals for commun-ity-based projects.
Organizations may re-ceive up to $25,000 in grant funding per year on projects that focus on one or more of the fol-lowing objectives: volun-teering, mentoring, ex-panding awareness of elder abuse, social par-
ticipation and capital as-sistance.
Any local organiza-tions that have an idea for a project can to go to seniors.gc.ca to take ad-vantage of this call for proposals. e deadline for applications is July 5, 2013.
NHSP funding is an excellent opportunity for organizations to pro-mote the well-being of seniors by helping them to maintain a high qual-ity of life and continue to be active, participating members of our com-munity.
is year alone, the federal government will provide more than $33 million to support 1,750 community-based pro-jects for seniors across the country. In fact, since its beginning, the NHSP has funded more than 12,200 projects in hun-
dreds of communities that help foster social participation and inclu-sion of seniors in com-munities across Canada.
Participation by sen-iors in our society is vital to the wellbeing of our communities and it is important to acknow-ledge the important role they play.
Not only do we all bene t from their wis-dom and experience, their contribution en-sures Canada will con-tinue to earn a top spot on the OECD’s Better Life Index.

Many of my col-umns contain advice that is
not expected from the popular culture’s gener-ated sleazy image of a personal injury lawyer.
Being honest and forthright, for example, is the direct opposite of what many would expect a personal injury lawyer to recommend.
I’m going to hit you with another one: Do whatever you can, with-in reason, to make your claim as small as possible.
I can hear the sarcastic commentary now: “Oh, OK. I’m going to go to
that lawyer. I’m going to hire the lawyer who is going to help me gure out not how to maximize my claim, but rather to minimize it!”
A personal injury claim is, essentially, a legal right to compensa-tion. What are you being compensated for? Your losses.
e bigger your losses, the bigger your claim.
Conversely, the small-er your losses, the small-er your claim. ere is no “bonus.”
ere is only recovery of loss. When you fac-tor in the one-third fees you are going to pay your lawyer, you in fact end up signi cantly “in the red.”
Your best hope is to recover compensation for two-thirds of your losses.
e bigger your losses, the further you end up in the red, because more and more is taken by your lawyer in fees.
For a very small claim, with losses of only $9,000, you end up “in the red” about $3,000 ($9,000 minus lawyer fees).
For a larger claim, with losses of $90,000, you end up “in the red” about $30,000.
Who bene ts from maximizing your losses? Your lawyer. Who loses? You.
at’s the dollars and cents argument for keep-ing your losses as small as possible.
It just so happens that there is also a legal duty to do so. It’s called a “duty to mitigate”
A very recent decision of the Supreme Court of British Columbia quotes
the following authorita-tive statement of the law:
“Mitigation goes to limit recovery based on an unreasonable fail-ure of the injured party to take reasonable steps to limit his or her loss. A plainti in a personal in-jury action has a posi-tive duty to mitigate but if a defendant’s position is that a plainti could reasonably have avoided some part of the loss, the defendant bears the onus of proof on that issue…”
Turning that into English, you have an ac-tual legal obligation to take reasonable steps to end up as little “in the red” as possible.
If you fail to do so, ICBC won’t have to re-imburse you for the loss-es that you could have made smaller had you acted reasonably.
For example, if your injury disables you from returning to your very heavy work as a drywall installer, but you would be able to handle less physically heavy work such as working at a desk or working as a sales-person, you have a legal duty to try to get those other jobs.
If you sit back and do nothing, and ICBC is able to prove that you would have been suc-cessful nding alternate work and earning at least a portion of the income you would have earned as a drywaller, the court will not reimburse you
for that portion. You will end up with
zero compensation for that portion of your loss-es.
People who are laid o and qualify for Em-ployment Insurance are required to look for work.
e same thing goes for people claiming com-pensation for injury loss-es.
e di erence is that the Employment Insur-ance system is not go-ing to hire a lawyer to cross-examine you on how hard you tried to nd another job.
is “duty to miti-gate” is nothing to worry about. It’s not some “dark magic” that ICBC will be able to use to kill your claim.
It’s all about acting reasonably. If you are the least bit unsure, get ad-vice early on about what steps you could be taking to mitigate your losses and eliminate the possi-bility that ICBC can successfully “blame the victim” on this point.
is column is intended to provide general in-formation about injury claims. It is not a substi-tute for retaining a law-yer to provide legal advice speci cally pertaining to your case. Paul Hergott is a lawyer at Hergott Law in West Kelowna.

Open letter to e Hon. James Baker and members of council:
I am writing to pro-test in the strongest pos-sible terms the spraying of toxic substances on the public ‘greenspace’ in Okanagan Centre. e use of Roundup to con-trol/eliminate poison ivy on the lakefront is abso-lutely not acceptable.
Roundup is a poison-ous chemical mix that poses a health threat not only to humans. It is par-ticularly lethal to am-phibians and to a less-er extent sh. It is toxic to earthworms, bene cial insects, birds and mam-mals and it destroys the vegetation they depend on for food and shel-ter. e active ingredient glyphosate (and Mon-santo does not have to reveal the precise com-position of Round-up so who knows what else it contains) reduces the growth of bene -cial soil-dwelling fungi. Roundup shows ad-verse e ects in all stan-dard categories of toxico-logical testing, including medium-term toxicity, long-term toxicity, gen-etic damage, e ects on reproduction and car-cinogenicity. Spraying Roundup on the fore-shore of Lake Okanagan ensures contamination of the land and the lake water and thus puts hu-man and non-human life forms at risk.
Roundup kills all the green plants it touches.
I understand some
people’s concern about the e ects of the rhus toxicodendron plant. But the plant grows near the path in specif-ic areas and is rooted into the soil. It is easily iden-ti able. ere is warn-ing signage. Humans can avoid it. e plant does not jump up and rub it-self over selected victims. Children can be taught to identify the plant and give it a wide berth. Babies can be kept away by their caregivers. And if (heaven forbid) some-one should contract the itching blisters of poison ivy and there are a few days of discomfort, isn’t it comforting to know that the reaction is relative-ly benign and will pass, unlike the pollution of earth and water that re-sults from the applica-tion of Roundup?
As much as Monsanto would like us to believe Roundup is harmless, numerous studies point out that it is not. And how can a corporation that derives 50 per cent of its corporate pro t from the sale of Round-up be expected to be transparent?
e use of toxic chemicals to enhance a ‘greenspace’ is ironic and counter-intuitive at best; woefully misguid-ed and ignorant at worst. I ask you to please re-consider the removal of the poison ivy. And cer-tainly please do not spray Roundup along the lake.

e Life After Laun-dry Ladies Club of Lake Country has secured the Canadian premier of a feel-good movie pro-duced in London and written, directed and starring women over the age of 50.
e Power of ree, has been called a “de-lightful anecdote about friendship, persever-ance and hope that cele-brates the strength of the older woman,” by Studio
Magazine in the UK. e lm has been an
O cial Selection and audience favourite at the Women’s International Film Festival (Miami), the Brooklyn Girl Film Festival (New York) and the Toronto Independ-ent Film Festival. e movie has had premieres in London and Johan-nesburg but not in Can-ada.
Film producer Ann Cameron was intro-
duced to Lake Country last year when she trav-elled to Oyama to recu-perate after being hit by a car. It was her time in Oyama that led to the movie premiere coming to the Okanagan.
“We decided to team up with the Life After Laundry Ladies Club to combine our Canadian premiere with a fund-raiser for charity,” said Cameron.
“I came to Oyama to
recuperate last May af-ter being hit by a car. e wonderful people I’ve met in the Okanagan convinced me that all the hard working women here deserve a feel good movie that honours and celebrates the older woman,” Cameron said.
e Power of ree is a comedy lmed in Lon-don, England and star-ring three 50-some-thing actresses: Toyah Willcox (British), Rob-
in Craig (Canadian) and Brumilda Van Rensburg (South African). e three friends, separat-ed by time and distance, rediscover the bonds of friendship and reunite to improve their lives. Cameron says the movie is the rst ever that stars, was written by, directed by, scored by and pro-duced by women over 50.
Canadian Craig, is a veteran of Wind at My Back, Degrassi, the Shaw
Festival and many other engagements. She is no stranger to the Oka-nagan having spent her childhood summers with her grandparents in Oyama. Craig will be a special guest at the pre-miere at the Creekside eatre June 29.
e Life After Laun-dry Ladies Club o cial-ly started in January of this year and is a grow-ing group of women of all ages. e group’s goal
is to help the commun-ity of Lake Country in a variety of ways, from do-nating to charity, to help-ing out residents who may have fallen on hard times.
Tickets are at Intrigue winery, which is also pro-viding wine. For more information nd the Life After Laundry Ladies Club on Facebook, click on events, or email [email protected].

e Lake Country Heritage and Cultur-al Society has announced that the Lake Country Museum and Archives has been awarded fund-ing for a series of events in 2013.
Kakonosedai: A Cen-tury of Community, will celebrate the hist-ory of the Japanese Can-adian Pioneers of Lake Country and their des-cendants. e events are funded by the Leon and ea Koerner Founda-tion of B.C. and the mu-seum is working in part-nership with the Kelow-na-Kasugai Sister City Association and with the Nikkei National Mu-seum of Burnaby to present the events.
e events include a major exhibition at the museum, Kakonosedai:
A Century of Commun-ity, featuring the history of the Japanese Canadian pioneers. e exhibition will open Aug. 10, 2013. Coinciding with the ex-hibition opening is the museum’s book launch of Kakonosedai, with cop-ies available at the mu-seum after the opening. e museum’s feature event, Centrepiece, will include Japanese per-formers, displays booths, and traditional food. In September, the museum will present a lecture at the Creekside eatre, at 10241 Bottom Wood Lake Road.
Kakonosedai: A Cen-tury of Community is a continuing project, which tells the story of the rst Japanese Can-adian pioneers in Lake Country and their ex-

Okanagan College will bestow its highest honour on three respect-ed and innovative local community leaders dur-
ing a series of convoca-tion ceremonies in June, including a former Lake Country district coun-cillor.
Th e proprietor of Gatzke Orchards in Oyama, Alan Gatzke will be recognized as an Honorary Fellow of the College along with Ernie Philip (cultural aware-ness) and Barry Lapointe (aviation) for contribu-tions and leadership in the their area of work.
“I am proud to wel-come Ernie, Alan and Barry as Honorary Fel-lows of Okanagan Col-lege,” said president Jim Hamilton. “When I think about the people who have made a diff er-ence in our commun-ities, from Kelowna to Oyama and extending to the Shuswap, each of the 2013 recipients are shin-ing examples of people who have dedicated to improving their com-munities.”
Gatzke was presented as the Honorary Fellow at the College’s after-noon ceremony on Sat-urday where he ad-dressed the graduating class of business students at Okanagan College.
As proprietor of Gatz-ke Orchards in Oyama, Gatzke is a third genera-
tion farmer whose roots in the Okanagan extend back to 1929, when his grandfather began the family business. Deep-ly embedded in the agri-cultural history of the Okanagan, Gatzke Or-chards is one of the re-gion’s oldest producers of tree fruits. In the 80 years since Leo Gatzke began farming in Oyama, the business has adapted to meet the needs of the people and land it serves.
As one of the areas early adopters of agrito-urism, Gatzke Orchards is committed to corpor-ate social responsibility and sustainability in all forms of the business.
Gatzke’s vision for the family business has re-sulted in a thriving lo-cal hub that includes a farm market, café, bakery, accommodations and venues for concerts, wed-dings and special events.
Gatzke has also served as a board director of Tourism Kelowna, where he has helped move the sustainability agenda for-ward through his unique insight into economic diversifi cation.

A pair of Lake Coun-try teenagers have made it through the fi rst phase in a contest being held by Mountain Dew that could see the duo win one per cent of sales of a new drink being intro-duced by the company.
A video promot-ing the new drink, pro-duced by Lake Country teens Erik Madsen, 18, and 16-year-old Wyn-den Danylowich, had the most online views of 118 videos produced across Canada. In fact it more than doubled the next most popular video in the contest, which is moving into its second phase, judging by Moun-tain Dew company rep-resentatives.
“We didn’t expect this,” said Madsen. “We had such a good team and we had so much ef-fort put into it. We were nervous because we were supposed to get it out the week before we did but within three days we went from not having a video to being in fi rst place. It was quite ridicu-lous.”
Th e video, called Rise

If the teens win, they will win one per cent of the sales of the new drink over the next two years.
“I have to say I’m proud of everyone who was involved in mak-ing the video,” said Mad-sen. “Th e commun-ity supported us so well. We couldn’t have pulled this off without so many people that came togeth-er on this.”

Is now a good time to buy? How is the market compared to this time last year?
Central Okanagan sales are up 10.8% this May compared to May 2012. It all comes down to one simple question…How much real estate do you wish you
owned today that you would have bought ten years ago?
With whispers of rising rates, variety of choice, good prices, pride of ownership, a forced savings plan, and return on investment are just a few reasons why you should purchase a home in today’s market.
Although the answer seems simple, real estate planning and entering the market now are great ideas for both ownership and investment purposes. The key to successfully planning ahead and taking advantage of the market is to have a knowledgeable Realtor on your team, working with you and helping you to capitalize on this opportunity.
Let’s now fast-forward and ask ourselves a similar question; “How much real estate are you going to wish you had bought in 2013?” Pretty simple isn’t it?

What if a permanent tooth is coming in and the baby tooth has not fallen out yet?
This is a very common problem, especially in the lower front incisors. If the tooth is loose, the
dentist may need to extract the baby tooth. In either case, it is best to make an appointment so that the situation can be assessed and the best course of action taken for your child.
Dr. Jung did part of her residency at BC Children’s Hospital in addition to having worked at a private pediatric practice in Vancouver in 1997. I need bifocals to help me see in the distance and to read. Can I still wear contacts?
Absolutely! There are a few options that will allow you to get out from behind your frames and into contacts that help you see clearly in the
distance and up close. Multifocal contact lenses have both distance and reading power in the same lens, with the distance power in the center and the reading power in the edge of the lens, or vice versa. This means that you are always looking through both powers, but your brain learns to tune into the power that you need for your current task. The other option is monovision, which means correcting your dominant eye for distance and your non-dominant eye for near. With information about your line of work, your hobbies and your visual needs, we can help you choose the type of correction that would be most successful!

My dog is in a large fenced yard. Is she getting enough exercise?
Canines are designed by nature for movement. If your dog does not get regular aerobic exercise, she is more
likely to develop arthritis and other debilitating conditions that affect the bones, joints, muscles and internal organs.
Also many behavior problems in dogs are due to a lack of physical and mental activity. Your dog, like yourself, should get a minimum of 20 minutes of sustained heart-thumping exercise three times per week. Slow walking on leash is not suf cient. You need to do power walking or off leash activity such as swimming, fetch, frisbee, agility competition or biking (using a special dog bike leash).
The bottom line is: even if you have a huge fenced-in backyard your dog will not get the exercise she needs unless you get out in the yard with her and engage her in activities that will give her a consistent cardiovascular workout.

Front gardens are generally transitional areas between very public spaces and private space inside your home. A front garden is used by all kinds of people, from those you know intimately to those you don’t know at all. What a front garden should do is to welcome visitors to your home and re ect something of your personality.
Re ect Your Personality e journey through
your front garden is the rst impression visitors have of your home. e space you create should reveal something of your personality; amboyant, classically stylish, modern, practical, inviting or reserved.
Create An Entrancing Entrance! e entrance to your
home is probably one of its most important elements. e route to the front door should be clear and safe.
You may need a path to the front door from more than one area: driveway, sidewalk, rear garden
for example. Any changes in level along the pathway should
be safe and comfortable and the path should be wide enough for 2 people to walk along it side
by side. Be wary of not using the most direct and obvious route from street to door. People are lazy and will always take the shortest path, even if this means tramping through your rose bed!
Enhance the Value of Your Home ere is no doubt
that an attractive and well-maintained front garden enhances the curb appeal of a property. Simple renovation work can be e ective to improve the appearance of a garden. For example: de ning the edges of existing planting beds, thinning out overgrown and crowded plants or applying organic mulch to plant beds. Front gardens are used and viewed year-round so it may be wise to incorporate some evergreen varieties for
winter colour and interest.
■ LANDSCAPING MAINTENANCE
Ten ways you can conserve water1. Have your Irrigation system audited. Auditing
is a way of testing your system for accuracy and for leaks that may be happening underground out of sight. Auditors can also give advice as to how to water more e ectively.2. Observe your sprinklers for excessive mist.
Sprinklers that receive too much pressure will give o a lot of mist that will quickly evaporate into the air and never hit the ground. Learn about the required pressure your sprinklers need to run most e ciently. 3. Look for persistent wet spots
around sprinkler heads. is usually indicates that one of your irrigation valves is leaking and requires repair. A leaking valve leaks water constantly until the repair is completed.4. Convert your shrub beds to
low-volume drip lines. is great-ly reduces the amount of water that is evaporated away each time your system runs. It also reduces weed seed germination by keeping the majority of soil surfaces dry.5. Mulching the surface of all
exposed soil areas helps to pre-serve soil moisture. 2 - 3 inches of a well composted bark or other organic material will also feed the soil and improve plant health. Avoid raw wood products as it suppresses all plant growth. 6. When watering, water well to allow water to
penetrate into the plants’ root zone. Water less often, but deeper. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, multiple light waterings will allow a slower soak. Very light waterings do not move past the surface
of soil, evaporate away and are not used by plants. 7. Older plants require less frequent waterings.
Adjust your irrigation to soak established plants nice and deep but not more than once per week.8. Have check valves installed in the base of all of
your sprinklers. is helps to keep your pipes lled with water in between irrigation cycles. Sprinklers without check valves drain out their water down to the lowest head on the zone and it usually ends up running down the street.
9. Reduce your lawn areas. Lawns use the most amount of water in your landscape. ey are also over sprayed with sprinklers. Sprinklers throw the water into the air where a good portion is evaporated before it hits the ground. Most all plants once established use far less water than lawns and can be watered with low volume driplines. 10. Insist on quality irrigation
parts including high e ciency sprinkler heads. ese heads produce more solid droplets that make it to the ground without becoming mist that evaporates quickly. Other parts are designed to conserve water and should be part of all systems. An “ET Controller” timer will calculate the amount
of water your plants need based on evaporation rates at your house and manage all your zone times e ciently. Be prepared to pay more for these parts but the result is an e cient system that saves water every day!

“It was a fantas-tic night,” said organ-izer Jennifer Boal. “ e performances were out-standing and the judges had a tough time choos-ing which two perform-ers would go away with the prizes o ered this year.”
Boal held the event for the second straight year and it became a popular night in Lake Country, with a wide variety of talented sing-er-songwriters stepping up to the mic.
“ ank you to all
of the performers who entertained us at our March, April, and May Open Mic nights,” she said. “ e talent was simply exceptional and has been celebrated throughout this com-petition. ank you to everyone who came out to support our musicians. As well, a special thank you goes out to all of our judges including Kathy Scott, Neil Macritchie, Louise Boisvert, Grant Lawrence, and special guest judge, Alexandria Colter.”
Regular open mic nights will continue throughout the sum-mer on the rst Wed-nesday of every month at the Lake Country Cof-fee House with the next
event coming up July 3.Boal says the contest
increased in popularity this year and she sees in-
terest growing.“I believe this contest
is only going to get big-ger and better,” she said.
Boal said the events success was a true com-munity e ort and want-ed to thank the owners of the Lake Country Co ee House, Carol and Sean Sproule, for “pro-viding a welcoming and beautiful venue to show-case our local talent.”
Winners were provid-ed with studio recording time at DMA Studios and Boal also thanked Dan Marcelino of DMA for running the sound system as well as photog-rapher Alicia Gregori.
JEFF KOUWENHOVENFrom age 12, Je
Kouwenhoven began
a dedicated journey of picking up the guitar and doing his best to strum out a song or two, but when he was 14, he got more serious, writing his own songs and starting a high school band. Later he played co eehous-es and in 2007 went to Australia where he was heavily involved in music for churches and school liturgies. He also busked on street corners as well as at pub open-mics and found himself as a fea-ture artist in a newspaper playing for a homeless shelter fundraiser. Over the past four years he has been recording origin-al music and writing new

e Lake Country Tennis Club held an-other action-packed doubles tennis tourna-ment last Friday night under the lights at the new tennis courts on Woodsdale Road in Lake Country.
Partners were drawn at random in the event, so players never knew who they would be matched up against, making for some inter-esting combinations. Heavy winds added an extra challenge to the night, as chasing wild, wind-aided curve balls became part of the play.
After three hours of action, the top players emerged. At the end of the night out of 27 tough competitors Lynne Blake took rst place overall with 12 games won.
In a two way tie for second with 11 games won was Ben Johnson, who was the top male player, tied with Shan-non Monssen.
ere was a three way tie for third place with 10 games won between Steve Sha rick, Bon-nie Ayriss and Julia Am-brozy.
Overall winner Lynne Blake was elated with her victory.
“ e night was very challenging and I’d like to thank my win to my exceptional partners who I got matched up with,” she said. “Jim, Julia, Alex and Darlene all played excellent and carried me through.”
e next tournament at the Lake Country ten-nis Club is scheduled for September. In the mean-
time, tennis club play is continuing at the courts on Fridays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come out and join us.
For information on the club or more upcom-ing events contact Ben at 250-766-0318 or see the web site at www.lake-countrytennis.com.
