As midnight struck to usher inMay 29, Pioneer Press photographersbegan to fan out across Lake Forest tocapture what a day is like in ourbeloved city.

For 24 hours they shot residentshustling to catch the train, enjoying ashoe shine, drinking from a MarketSquare water fountain and dancing tothe music of The English Beat. Young-sters sailed on Lake Michigan whileworkers baked desserts on WesternAvenue. Nearly a dozen photogra-phers took thousands of pictures, andwe’ve selected the best of the lot forthis special section.

On the cusp of celebrating its 150thanniversary as a chartered city, LakeForest has much to offer its more than22,000 residents. From fantasticschools to a beautiful beach, from anhistoric downtown to flourishing non-profits, the city is as strong as it’s everbeen. The Lake Forester, publishedweekly since the Grover Cleveland ad-ministration (1896 for non-historybuffs), is proud to keep tabs on thissparkling North Shore community.
