It's hard to believe that the Federal Government thought having a recorded message on the Medicare hotline advising that the $7 GP co-payment would be introduced from July 2015 was a good idea.

I understand that they are committed to the co-payment and they fully expect the legislation to be passed, but it's not across the line yet and won't have the backing of the Opposition.

I can also accept that the Government was attempting to clear up the confusion surrounding the issue with reports that GP visits have declined as some people think the co-payment is already in effect.

Another interesting political story was the poll in the Daily Telegraph showing the Coalition would comfortably win a state election if it were held now, despite the fallout from the lCAC drama. I think it's a reminder of just how much ground Labor has to make up in NSW - remember that the Coalition won 69 seats to 20 at the 2011 election. That is an almost insurmountable gap to overcome, but I think State Opposition Leader John Robertson has done well restore the reputation of the Labor Party.

Judging from listening to and watching him in radio and TV interviews, he comes across as a very competent leader and I believe he is now starting to increase his public profile -something I thought was lacking early on in his leadership.

o The biggest story for Knights fans at the moment, apart from who is going to run the club, is the form of fullback Darius Boyd.

Those of you who follow the NRL will be well aware of the issue - that Boyd stars for Queensland and seemingly struggles for Newcastle.

I don't think it's as clear cut as that. Yes, there are statistics showing that this year

he has been one of the least effective fullbacks in the NRL, but the overall form of the Knights has to be taken into account.

It's hard for any player to shine in a team that is struggling for confidence.

We'd love to see him in that lethal form he was showing during his time at St George Illawarra where he scored and set-up many tries by chiming into the backline and creating the extra man.

He was man of the match in the Dragons' 2010 grand final victory.

Boyd was the Knights' player of the year last season, so suggestions that he has not been worth his lucrative salary at the Knights are somewhat wide of the mark.

It's also important to point out that at State of Origin level, he is receiving quality service from Greg Inglis who always attracts extra defenders and creates space for his winger.

Boyd is a very good finisher when playing on the wing as his 14 Origin tries in 18 appearances can attest to.

Sink hole shock G New CEO of Lake Macquarie Economic Development Company named

• AMELIA PARROn _ @amelia_parroU

Emergency services descended a residential street in Swansea Heads early last week after two sink holes opened up in Lambton

Parade, extensively damaging a property. One residence had to be evacuated on

Tuesday night after a sink hole, measuring 15 metres wide and 10 metres deep, opened up without warning, causing the front corner of the home to collapse.

The two occupants were not injured. The next morning, a smaller sink hole,

possibly caused by the first subsidence event, opened up in the front yard of a property two doors down from the damaged residence.

Mine Subsidence Board CEO, Greg ColeClark described the event as "unusual".

The Commonwealth Bank's former head of equity and advisory solutions has been named chief executive officer of Lake Macquarie City Council's new economic development company.

Adam Cougle, whose previ-ous appointments include senior management roles with the Bank of America, Intesa Sanpaolo and the Commonwealth Bank, brings a wealth experience to the newly formed Lake Macquarie Economic Development Company, whose primary focus will be on attracting new business to Lake Macquarie, while supporting the growth of more than 12,000 existing businesses in the area.

Having been born, raised and educated in the Hunter, Mr Cougle said he was optimistic about achieving the goals of the company.

''We are well positioned to succeed in the company's primary objective of unlocking and strengthening the economic growth potential of Lake Macquarie City," he said.

"This area has been undermined for some time and there has been no history of mine subsidence," he said. The first sink hole that opened up at Swansea Heads on Tuesday night Photo: Facebook ''1 am confident that this city, with it

blend of natural assets, talented people and geographical location, is poised for growth in investment, business development and employment and I look forward to working with the board to attract and support the necessary capital to further expand Lake Macquarie's economy."

"For 60 years or more there has been no history so this is an unusual event."

The subsidence is thOUght to be due to the collapse of a 25 metre deep shaft that formed part of the Swansea Pit, which was abandoned in 1953.

Concrete was poured into the first hole on Thursday in an attempt to stabilise the

Empire strikes back • AMELIA PARRon W @amella_parrott

Once the home of one of Hunter Street's most infamous eyesores, the former Empire Hotel site will soon be given a

new lease on life, delivering affordable housing to Newcastle's West End.

The 14-storey unit block, proposed for the site opposite KFC on the corner of Steel Street, will house more than 100 apartments, including at least 25 affordable dwellings, which will ultimately be handed over to Housing NSW. It will also feature ground floor retail

space and a number of accessible independent living units for residents with disabilities.

The State Government will contribute the land value of $2.8 million to the deal through the current landowner, Hunter Development Corporation (HDC), with Newcastle City Council pitching in an additional $2.9 million.

The Government selected local consortium, NewcastleFirst to redevelop the site.

"The partnership between the City of Newcastle and NSW Government is an innovative approach to stimulating urban renewal and leverages private sector investment to transform this longdilapidated site," Minister for Planning, Pm Goward said in a statement.

"It will transform an eyesore into a posi-

tive contributor to the street-scape and the city economy."

Newcastle MP, Tim Owen said he was pleased to see anew development planned for Newcastle West.

"Importantly, it progresses urban renewal in the western end of Hunter Street, complementing projects occurring further east such as the University city campus," he said.

Once transferred to Housing NSW, local agency, Compass Housing will manage the affordable housing element of the development.

Compass Housing CEO, Greg Budworth said the announcement was a rare piece of good news amidst the worsening affordable housing crisis in Newcastle and the Hunter.

Once finalised, NewcastleFirst's development application will be assessed by an independent planning consultant with recommendations to be made to the Joint Regional Planning Panel.

Community denied a briefing Council blocks discussion on GPT and UrbanGrowth NSW development

• AMELIA PARROTT )# @amelia_parrott

Attempts to discuss the controversial high-rise development planned for Newcastle's East End were once again thwarted at

last week's ordinary meeting of Newcastle City Council, with Greens and Labor motions failing to get off the ground.

Labor councillors attempted to move a motion to allow members of the Newcastle Inner City Residents Alliance (NICRA) to brief Council on their concerns regarding the scope of the GPT and UrbanGrowth NSW development, which could see a 2o-storey high residential tower built on the comer of King and Perkins Streets.

Council resolved to let the matter lie on the table on the casting vote of Mayor Jeff McCloy.

Cr Brad Luke said the matter should stay on the table until such a time that Council is the approval authority for the development application.

Cr Luke, a member of the Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP), the authority that will ultimately approve the project, said it would not be appropriate for Council to be briefed by the community group as the development application had already been lodged.

"What's the point of a briefing if we are not the deciding authority," he asked.

Cr Stephanie Posniak questioned why it was appropriate for Council to be briefed by GPT and UrbanGrowth NSW if it was not appropriate to hear a briefing from a

community group. Greens councillors, Therese Doyle and Michael Osborne later attempted to move an urgent motion for Council officers' report on the development to be brought to open Council for consideration before it is sent to the JRPP,

The devil is in the details Council to seek open briefings from Government and lessees on future of port

• AMELIA PARROTT W @amelia_parrott

Newcastle City Council will receive briefings from the State Government and the new lessees of the Port of Newcastle

about their plans for the future management and development of the port and the use ofland around the site.

Council voted unanimously in support of two separate motions that sought open briefings from each stakeholder to discuss the details of the 98-year lease.

Cr Michael Osborne said the lease of the port was the biggest local land sale since the Government sold off most of Newcastle to the Australian Agricultural Company (AA Co.) in the nineteenth century and it was important for Council to know the details of the transaction.

''It is important we invite them to meet with us so they can outline their plans for the City of Newcastle and the people of Newcastle," he said.

Newcastle City Council will seek open briefings on the lease of the Port of Newcastle

Cr Nuatali Nelmes questioned Newcastle's $340 million share of proceeds generated from the lease of the port saying the remaining funds from the transaction should predominantly be spent locally.

Announcing the finalisation of the lease last Friday, just over three weeks out from

the State budget NSW Treasurer Andrew Constance would not confirm whether Newcastle would receive more funds from the lease.

"With the conclusion of this transaction, we can now guarantee an extra $1.5 billion for investment in much-neeeded

infrastructure in NSW, with 30 per cent to be invested in rural and regional projects," Mr Constance said in a statement.

"The people of Newcastle and the Hunter should watch this space for further initiatives in their region, which was taken for granted by Labor for decades."

Newcastle will receive $340 million from the $1.75 billion transaction which, together with an additional $120 million already committed by the State Government, will fund the revitalisation of Newcastle's CBn including the new light rail service.

Hockey's budget hits the Lake Lake Macquarie Mayor warns of rising rates and possible cuts to services

• AMELIA PARROTT _ @amella_parrott

Joe Hockey's Federal budget could wind up costing Lake Macquarie residents more on their rates.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Jodie Harrison has warned that the increasing fuel excise, increases to Fringe Benefits Tax and a freeze on future Financial Assistance Grants outlined in last month's Federal budget could cost Council around $16 million over the next ten years, a cost that would likely be absorbed by cuts to services or rates increases.

Cr Harrison said the changes would cost Council $464,000 next financial year and absorb significant amounts of Councils previously approved IPART variations.

"Decisions like this throw us a real curveball in terms of Council's long-term plans," she said.

She said the impact of the additional costs brought about by the Federal budget equated to just under 0.5 per cent of Council's total rate income for 2014/15 and approximately 1.45 per cent of its total rate income in 2023/24.

During a senate estimates hearing last Tuesday, head of the Department ofInfrastructure and Regional Development, Lake Macquarie Mayor Jodie Harrison warns the Federal budget could have an adMike Mrdak said Council's would have to verse affect on Council's finances

"find efficiencies" in light of the budget . "All organisations, when their budgets are reduced have to make some judgements about which functions they perform, their level of staffing and the like," he said.

"All levels of government will need to consider that over the coming years."

He said the department had not performed analysis into the impact of the changes on individual councils.

Cr Brian Adamthwaite said Lake Macquarie residents would face rate rises if the changes in the budget were not blocked.

"It is unlikely that the State Government is going to catch up the cost of these Federal cuts," he said.

"That leaves only one other funding stream -the ratepayers of Lake Macquarie.

"We have to think about who is going to pick up the slack."

Shortland MP, Jill Hall said she was particularly concerned about the impact the fuel tax and the freeze on Financial Assistance Grants would have on Council.

"We will now also have to see what the State budget brings down," she warned.

Council will make formal representations to local MPs to express its concerns about the budget and its impact on Council's long-term financial sustainability.

Cash win for local communities Maitland and Cessnock eligible to join Newcastle in access to Resources for Regions funding

• MELISSAH COMBER

Maitland and Cessnock are now eligible to receive a slice of the $160 million of infrastructure funding provided

by the Resources for Regions program, which aims to support NSW communities affected by mining activity.

Previously, the communities were deemed to be ineligible to apply for the funding, but a report released by Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services, Andrew Stoner last week broadened the eligibility criteria to take in truck movements and miningrelated employment.

Newcastle has already benefited from the funding program this financial year, receiving $5.6 million for road works, shared pathways and cliff stabilisation on the Shortland Esplanade.

"Mining is a critical contributor to the NSW economy and a crucial job creator in the regions, but it puts extra pressure on everything from schools to hospitals, roads to recreational facilities and housing to childcare services," Mr Stoner said.

Newcastle received $5.6 million for work on Shortland Esplanade under the Resources for Regions program

According to the NSW Minerals Council, over 2100 people in Maitland were directly employed in mining, sharing in over $286

million of wages, and 879 local businesses benefited from $894 million in direct spending from mining companies. It is estimated that the spending generated an additional $2.3 billion in economic activity,

Raising artistic ability

Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen, hands a cheque for $6,500 to ConnectAblllty client, Maree Hopaln and ConnectAblllty CEO, Bryan McLoughlin

• AMELIA PARROTT _ @amelia_parrott

Creative ConnectAbility clients will soon be able to create beautiful artworks in airconditioned comfort, with the

disability service provider receiving a grant to upgrade its art room.

Until now, ConnectAbility has been running its successful art program from an unconverted garage in Hamilton, which, according to ConnectAbility CEO Bryan McLoughlin, is freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer and prevents some clients from participating in the classes due to the risk of respiratory infection in the cooler months.

ConnectAbility client, Maree Hopain told the Post she enjoyed painting in the art room but was often put off by the heat.

Now, thanks to a $6,500 grant from the NSW Government, work is underway to install a suspended ceiling in the art

room, as well as air-conditioning and new lighting, to make the space more comfortable for clients.

Mr McLoughlin said the upgrade would allow also ConnectAbility to expand the program.

"With the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in the Hunter, we've seen increased demand for our classes, but the existing facilities have not enabled us to accept new enrollments," he said.

"With the new art room we will be looking to engage even more with the wider arts community."

Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said the upgrade wasn't just about a new ceiling.

"A little bit of dollar spent on behalf of the State Government can really go a long way to improving the day-to-day lives of people with a disability."

Disability Services Minister, John Ajaka is expected to officially open the renovated art room later this week.

G Genesis join forces with headspace for fund raiser

Genesis Fitness Club Charlestown has partnered with national youth mental health foundation, headspace, for their grand opening fundraising lunch today (Wednesday).

Member for Charlestown Andrew Cornwell will be in attendance from 12.30pm for the opening with a lunch seminar on healthy eating to follow.

The cost for seminar and lunch will be $10 will all proceeds going to headspace.

There will also be the opportunity to take part in a 1.2km fun run or walk to raise additional money for headspace.

The fun run or walk has been running since May 20, with Genesis Fitness Clubs managing director, John Pirlo, pledging to donate at least $500 to headspace. If the total number of runners and walkers exceeds 1000, Mr Pirlo will increase the donation to $1000.

For Genesis Fitness Charlestown personal trainer Brent Taylor, the work of headspace is very close to his heart after losing friends to suicide.

"My aim since these tough times is to encourage everyone to speak up if there is something wrong," Mr Taylor said.

"Talking about your problems and letting someone know how you are feeling is important in young mental health. Please help us make a difference."

Mr Pirlo said Genesis were proud to have Mr Taylor as part of the team.

"His passion for fitness and goals to raise awareness for youth mental health has motivated us to do our part in supporting the cause;' Mr Pirlo said. "To inspire a world of movement is our vision and we believe passionately that everyone can do this and have fun along the way."

To take part, download the Strava GPS tracker app from either the App Store or Google Play, and head down to Genesis Charlestown at 219 Pacific Highway, Charlestown.

For more information on the fun run or the grand opening, contact Genesis Charlestown club manager Emma-Leigh Heighway on 4946 2653.

Support our local libraries Newcastle City Council joins campaign for improved library funding

• AMELIA PARRon W @amella_parrott

N ewcastleCityCouncilhasjoined its neighbours in throwing its support behind a state-wide campaign for better funding for

local libraries. Lake Macquarie and Maitland City Coun

cil voted to support the NSWPublic Library Association (NSW PLA) campaign in April and have since written to the Minister for the Arts and local MPs highlighting their concern over the inequity of the current funding model, and last week Newcastle became the latest Council to join the push for increased funding.

NSW councils receive the lowest percapita funding for public libraries from the Government of any state and as it stands, the State currently contributes just 4.2 per cent of the total operating costs of Newcastle's libraries, well below the State average of seven per cent.

According to NSWPLA, the State Government made a pre-election commitment in 2011 to undertake a comprehensive review of the allocation of funding for public libraries but it says there has been no significant action on behalf of the Government to meet its commitment.

Newcastle City Council will support a campaign for better funding for public libraries

Cr Nuatali Nelmes called the current level of funding a "disgrace".

"The amount we get from the State Government is a drop in the ocean," she said.

"This campaign highlights the constant cost shifting from the State Government to councils."

The motion received unanimous support from councillors and Council will now

Students sleep rough for Samaritans Hands-on experience delivers understanding of homeless issues in the Hunter

. AMEUA PARROTT _ @amella_parrott

Stage three students from Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College slept rough last Thursday night to help raise money to support homeless

people across the Hunter. There was no pre-bedtime TV or warm

bed to be had as students, teachers and parents slept under the stars in makeshift cardboard beds in support of Samaritans' Winter Appeal.

Speaking to the Post ahead of the sleep out, Year 4 student, Antonia Gentle said she didn't expect to get much sleep but was excited to be supporting such a good cause.

As well as participating in the sleep out, students have knitted blankets and collected more than 160 pairs of shoes, which will be donated to the Hunter-based charity. Stage coordinator, Amy BIbby said the sleep out provided an authentic learning experience for the students.

"The students have been learning about communities recently so the sleep out is a really tangible wayfor them to get involved, make a difference and assist homeless people in our own area," she said.

"Hopefully they will be able to reflect after this experience and have a better understanding of the hardships faced by

other people in the community." Samaritans director of development, Lynne Graham said winter was a particular hard time for the Hunter's disadvantaged.

Message from the General Manager

The sale of Delta Electricity is proceeding with the call for expressions of interest and pre-indicative bid phase now completed. The second stage of the three-stage process will commence shortly. It is anticipated that the sale will be complete towards the end of 2014.

Delta has completed decommissioning works and lodged a development application (DA) for the demolition of Munmorah Power Station. The story in this issue of Community News lets you know where to go for information on the DA and the Statement of Environmental Effects.

Delta is very proud to sponsor a range of local community initiatives in the last few months including the very successful Morisset Community Festival on 18 May. Over 3,000 people passed through the gates with 700 children snapping up the unlimited ride pass. Featuring entertainment, food, market stalls and rides, the festival is one of the most family-friendly, affordable events on the Central Coast calendar.

Glenn Sharrock General Manager Central Coast

Club Back on Track 13·IMMlIllii1

A donation from Delta Electricity has helped the Gwandalan Junior Trials Mini Cycle Club to re-open after its facilities were wiped out by the October 2013 bushfires.

A vital part of rebuilding the club was replacing the safety barriers that surrounded the tracks. Without these barriers, the club was unable to secure its operating licence and insurance, and allow riders back on the track.

Delta donated 44 empty plastic drums, which were used to replace the original rubber tyre barriers destroyed in the fires.

Club President Scott Henry said the club depends on support from the local community to operate.

''As a result of Delta's donation, we have lots of kids with big smiles on their faces. Thank you Delta for your generosity~

Delta Electricity is assisting the Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command (LAC) to purchase new communications and GPS tools for the trail bikes they use to patrol off-road areas and protect the local community.

The sponsorship reflects a long-standing partnership between Delta and local police. For more than a decade Delta has supported the Tuggerah Lakes LAC trail bike fleet by providing funds for the purchase of new bikes, protective clothing and bike accessories.

Tuggerah Lakes LAC Operations Duty Officer Tim Winmill thanked Delta for their support.

"The trail bikes increase the capability of Tuggerah Lakes Police to patrol the local area, respond to emergencies and get to areas that we couldn't otherwise get to quickly:'

Delta Electricity is pleased to announce that work on the A-Station demolition project at Vales Point is now complete.

All demolished materials were transported off-site for recycling or disposal at licensed waste management facilities.

In future, the majority of the site will be left as open space.

The A-Station employed many local people over the past 50 years and is an important part of the area's history.

In recognition of the significance of the site, Delta is developing a heritage interpretive panel (see below) to commemorate the story of the A-Station and pay tribute to the people who worked there.

Solar Power Research

Delta Electricity and the CSIRO are trialling the use of solar energy to power our Carbon Capture Plant Project at Vales Point.

The aim of the Project is to demonstrate the

electricity

effective capture of carbon dioxide produced from a power station. The research focuses on reducing the operating costs and energy required for the process.

The Plant is currently powered by steam from an electric boiler. The trial will determine the feasibility of using solar panels to generate the steam instead. If successful, the use of solar energy will improve the Plant's efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

The solar energy trial is being funded by the Australian Solar Institute, with financial and in-kind support from CSI RO and Delta Electricity.

DA for Munmorah

Delta Electricity has lodged a development application (DA) with Wyong Shire Council requesting permission to demolish Munmorah Power Station.

Munmorah Power Station was officially closed by Delta in July 2012, after 45 years of operation.

The application is for demolition consent only. The site is not part of the sale of NSW Generators and will be transferred to Govemment Property NSW who will manage the project. If you would like further information on the DA and the Statement of Environmental Effects please visit www.wyong.nsw.gov.au or www.de.com.au/munmorahproject

Delta Scholarships at Hunter TAFE 13·'MMil~ii'1

Applications are open for two Delta Electricity Hunter TAFE Scholarships worth $750 each. The Scholarships are for continuing trades apprentices studying full-time in Automotive, Electrical, Engineering, Manufacturing, Mechanical and Plumbing courses, who are financially disadvantaged. Applicants must be under 21 and resident on the Central Coast or Lake Macquarie. Applications should be made to Hunter TAFE and close on 13 June 2014.

ART

Bringing colour to the fore Winter program at Maitland Regional Art Gallery to feature ARTEXPRESS exhibition

• MELISSAH COMBER

Winter is not at all going to be grey at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, with a colourful and diverse range of exhibitions

taking centre stage. MRAG's Deputy Director, Brigette Uren,

said that the winter program had something for everyone.

"There's a very youthful, bright feeling," she said.

"We have established artists in the community alongside the new wave of artists."

The program features the works of John Olsen, John Ogburn, Desiderius Orban, Nola Jones, Dick Watson and expat Novocastrian Simone Paterson, capped off by ARTEXPRESS, a touring exhibition that features the best works from last year's HSC Visual Arts students.

Hundreds of hours went into developing the works, which include photographs, ceramics, drawings and textiles, but they weren't all smooth sailing.

Lambton High's Rebecca Wilson, Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College's Jacinta Borrow, Central Coast Grammar's Ruben Fela and Warners Bay High's Hannah Spradley with Miss Wilson's artwork

"You work on it all the time at school, at home, lunch time and free periods," Central Coast Grammar School's Ruben Fela said.

"Whenever I had to change something it proved to make it better."

Lambton High School's Rebecca Wilson said that seeing the end result was the best part.

"You do have problems, but the hiccups are all part of the process.

NEWCASTLE MATTERS

Ensuring the future of Fort Scratchley

Arguably Newcastle's most spectacular vantage point, overlooking the Hunter River Estuary, coastline and Nobbys Headland, Fort Scratchley Historic Site is one of our heritage treasures.

Listed as part of the Coal River Precinct on the NSW State Heritage Register, the Fort was transferred to the City from the Commonwealth Government in June 2008.

Council is responsible for protecting the site's heritage values and ensuring it is utilised to its full potential.

Last week Council adopted a new site plan of management which sets a clear direction for the Fort over the next five to 10 years. It reconfirms the Fort's Historic Site Heritage Management Plan 2008 and ensures its protection in future management decisions. Signal Hill, later Fort Scratchley, was the site of Australia's first European coal mine and a coal-fired navigation beacon.

A strategic fort for over 150 years it is Australia's only coastal fortification to fire on an enemy vessel, firing two salvoes at a Japanese submarine during World War II.

Fort Scratchley Historical Society has managed the day to day operations for over 20 years. The dedicated work of the Society's volunteers, namely the interpretation of a working fort, has made Fort Scratchley the unique site it is today. Visitors take guided tours, visit the Fort's museum and experience re-enactments from the period when it was an operating fort.

The Queen's Birthday long weekend coincides with the anniversary of the 1942 attack and on Monday 9 June, the Fort has a range of activities organised to recognise this occasion .

Find out more about the Fort at www.fortscratchley.com.au The City of Newcastle and the University of Newcastle invite

artists, students, researchers, creative individuals and groups to submit proposals for a creative work to be projected as part of the City Evolutions Public Art Project from July to September 2014. The theme for the proposals is "Windows - Past and Future."

Entries must be received by the University of Newcastle by spm Monday 23 June 2014.

More information is available at www.newcastle.edu.aul research-and-innovation/centre/hcit/about-us

"Seeing it here is a bit surreal," she said. "It's really rewarding seeing the hard

work you put in all year payoff."

School, Belmont Christian College, Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College, Warners Bay High School, Merewether High School, St Francis Xavier's College and West Wallsend High School also have works on display.

LAKE MACQUARIE MATTERS

Celebrating National Reconciliation Week

Our nation's history and heritage begins with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their achievements and vital contributions to local communities should be recognised.

Last week we celebrated National Reconciliation Week, a time for everyone to join the reconciliation conversation and reflect on these shared histories, contributions and achievements.

Held annually from 27 May to 3 June, the week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

National Reconciliation Week is framed by two key events in Australia's history, which provide strong symbols for reconciliation. Firstly, 27 May 1967, where a referendum saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Indigenous people and recognise them in the census.

Secondly, 3 June 1992, when the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, which recognised that Indigenous people have a special relationship with the land and that in fact Australia didn't ''belong to no-one" before European settlement.

This paved the way for land rights known as Native Title. Mabo Day is held 3 June to celebrate the life of Eddie Koiki Mabo.

I am proud that our community and Council is actively involved in promoting the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

On the eve of National Reconciliation Week, Council authorised $3000 in funding for Aboriginal youth cultural activities and events across the City.

These programs will offer opportunities for schools and notfor-profit organisations to implement youth cultural activities and events such as didgeridoo workshops healing and healthy eating programs, education and career development, cultural art and craft activities, Yarn Up sessions and Learning Circles with mentors and Elders.

Introducing robots to Avondale School

Samara Bentley and Olivia Morton program their robot as part of a RoboGals workshop at Avondale School

• AMELIA PARROTT )# @amelia_parrott

It was hands-on high-tech fun at Avondale School in Cooranbong last week as young female primary and high school students tried their hands at programming robots.

Part of the international RoboGals initiative and facilitated by students from the University of Newcastle, the workshops are aimed at encouraging young girls to find out more about technology and engineering, professional fields where

men traditionally outnumber their female counterparts 10 to 1. Technologies teacher, Jennifer Merriman found most girls easily embraced engineering as a potential career path once they were simply exposed to it. "Engineering is not really descriptive," she said. "It's a term we hear so often in our society but we don't really get to talk about it much at a school level.

"This workshops has given the girls a bit of background as to what engineering can look like and to maybe say, 'Hey, maybe I'd like to be an engineer.'"

tl) Call to maintain seniors' concessions

OLDER AUSTRALIANS are calling on state and territory governments to maintain seniors' concessions for electricity, water, public transport and council rates after funding cuts announced in the federal budget.

The federal government abolished its share of funding for the National Partnership Agreement on Certain Concessions for Pensioners Concession Card and Seniors Card Holders.

National consumer lobby group, National Seniors, has written to the premiers and chief ministers in each state and territory calling on them to maintain the value of concessions for people with Pensioner Concession Cards or Seniors Cards.

''We are extremely concerned about the impacts that the potential abandonment of concessions for electricity, water, public transport and council rates may have on older Australians:' said National Seniors chief executive Michael O'Neill.

''A single person in receipt ofthe full age pension receives $842.80 a fortnight arnounting to a little over $21,000 per annum.

"The loss of concessions ranging across the country from between $1163 to $2564 per year will be a significant hit to those low income earners who already find frugal ways to live?'

The 3 Peas Markets were established in November 2013 by three mums who met through their children in the school playground and developed a fun and unique friendship.

After discovering they all had very similar interests and crazy, hectic lifestyles with many like dreams and inspirations, Suzanne McDonald, Peta Smith and Bianca Tupper joined forces to provide a market with over 50 stalls offering fresh, funky, creative and local products.

They now plan to evolve and expand to become a well-established market in Lake Macquarie.

Being a part of a community is something the three ladies all feel strongly about and through the markets they hope to support surrounding local schools with their fundraising, help any young (or old) talented musicians and singers that want to be heard and get their name out there.

The markets are held on the second Sunday of each month. July's markets will be held at Teralba Public School on July 13, with negotiations with Council continuing to find a permanent location for subsequent months.

Additional stallholders are always welcome. Please call 0409 548 731 or email [email protected] to register your interest.

For further information on the 3 Peas Markets check out www.facebook. com/3peasmarkets.

Police snapshot :-:-: Police release comfit of man after child approached

Police have released a comfit image of a man following a string of four child approaches in Kurri Kurri last month.

The male is described as being of Cauca· sian appearance, with a tanned complexion, about 40 years of age, with brown hair that is longer on the top and shorter on the sides.

Police allege he approached a boy on Aberdare Street on the afternoon of Thursday, May 8, calling out to the child from a white van.

The van was last seen turning right from Aberdare Street onto Mitchell Avenue, Kurri Kurri .

The van is described as being a late model white Toyota HiAce with tinted front windows and a black cargo grill behind the driver's seat. No signage was observed on the van.

Anyone who may know the identity of this male or has any information that could assist police is urged to come forward.

Detectives attached to the Central Hunter Local Area Command are investigating the incident and they can be contacted on 4934 0200 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000.

Man charged over home invasion

Police have charged a man over a home invasion at Cameron Park earlier this year that left a resident critically wounded .

On Wednesday, March 19, a 22-year-old man was confronted by a group of armed males outside his home on Hilldale Drive.

The man was stabbed during an altercation inside the home and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

The man's father also suffered minor injuries when he was assaulted during the incident.

Detectives from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command arrested a 20-year-old man at his home in Belmont last Thursday and he was later charged with special aggravated break and enter.

Police are still seeking to identify two males involved in the incident.

Anyone who can help the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000.

HEALTH

Part 2: What are we really eating today?

Last week Ivana Brdc wrote in a letter for us with her views. She spoke of the confusion around eating and a healthy diet. This week is part two.

There were many risks in everyday life hundreds of years ago; childbirth and climate to name a couple. But the common diseases we suffer from today were not as prevalent. Neither were packaged, processed foods. Or anything genetically manipulated in a lab.

Yet what are we eating today? Genetically modified fruits and vegetables. Meat sourced from grain/hormone/antibiotic fed, unhealthy animals. Milk pasteurised and empty of any good nutrition.

And that's the good food options. We eat packaged snacks that claim to be filled with all the vitamins our children need. Fast food that is delivered to you very quickly but has been sitting on a shelf full of preservatives. Sugary drinks, soft drinks, energy drinks or juices filled with synthetic vitamins. And a huge selection of grain products.

Breads; flat, round, sliced, thick, thin, brown, white, multigrain, low GI, high folate and fibre, Lebanese, Indian, I even saw a 'breakfast' loaf... Hope nobody acddentally eats it at lunchtime! The list goes on.

Common sense tells me we need to stop. Let's take a look into our fridges and pantries and read a few labels. Chances are if you don't know what an ingredient is, you shouldn't be eating it.

Make it simple. Clean, pure water. Source good, free range, grass-fed meat. Find lots of fruits and vegetables, organic when possible. The best quality milk you can find.

They will give you all the real vitamins and minerals your body needs as well as all the other good compounds and cultures that are the foundation of a healthy, vital body.

Start eating the way our ancestors did. It might cost you a bit more, but if you don't invest in your health now, you may be paying for your sickness later.

There is very little in/ormation

regarding how the contribution

would work

MEDICAL

Don't put off seeing your doctor

• The government's proposal to introduce a $7 Medicare

Co-Contribution has everyone talking. There has been a lot of attention given to the idea in the media lately with a number of groups showing strong opposition to it. At this stage there is very little information available regarding how the contribution would work. But, if the proposed changes are passed in the Senate, they will take effect from 1 July 2015.

Unfortunately though, many GP practices have already witnessed a significant drop in patient visits, likely due to the confusion regarding the changes and patients believing that the co-payment plan has already started. It is vitally important for the community to understand that the government's Co-Contribution HAS NOT YET STARTED and will not begin until 1 July 2015 (or indeed at all if it is opposed by the Senate). It is extremely concerning to think that some patients may be cancelling or delaying their visit to their GP for fear of having to pay a co-contribution. The last thing we want to see is our patients getting sicker because they have not accessed the care they need when they need it, or to see hospital emergency departments clogged up with non-emergency needs. The idea of paying a private fee for health care services is not new and is generally accepted by those patients who can afford it. Many General Practices throughout Australia charge private fees to patients who can reasonably afford to pay, but the option of fully-funded government support has always been available for those patients who really need it. It is yet to be seen just how the government's proposed Medicare reforms will impact on patients, the community, the hospital system, and GP practices, who will also take a hit from the proposed cuts to Medicare payments.

For now though, there are NO additional Medicare charges that will apply to your GP visit. The proposed changes will not happen until mid next year and that is ONLY if it is passed in the Senate. So, if you have a need for medical care or advice, no matter how small you think your problem may be, please do not put off seeing your doctor.

Important tips for studying

University and high school mid-yearly exams are just around the corner. As I near the end of my undergraduate life I want to offer a few study tips I've learnt to fellow students, whether you're a first-year university student, apprentice at TAFE or a high school student contemplating the fast-approaching HSC.

Avoid last-minute cramming. This common strategy of all-night cramming before an exam not only leaves you exhausted by the time the test starts but has also been shown to be an ineffective method of retaining information. Make a study plan that consists of many shorter study sessions (a few hours at a time) rather than a few all day sessions.

Eat well. Your brain needs fuel to process and retrieve information.

It can't do this on two-minute noodles alone. Ensure you're eating a balanced diet when studying.

De-stress. Between study sessions find something that calms your mind. Consider meditating or exercising. It's normal to think that you should skip any usual exercise and prioritise studying but it's essential to avoid stress and stay healthy. Continue to play sport, go to the gym, surf or go for a jog or walk during study breaks. Your body, and mind, will thank you for it!

I hope these tips will help to get you through exam time. Additionally if you are someone who gets superstressed prior to a big test, consider using one of the many free counselling services available to students at universities, TAFEs and schools. Good luck!

Business

The Importance of branding

Your business provides a wonderful product or service and you want to share this with the world. But how do you differentiate between you and the hundreds of other small businesses in the market who perhaps shares similar products or services?

The answer is branding! Branding owes its origins to branding livestock to differentiate between owners. Today it's used to differentiate one business from another. As more and more businesses enter the marketplace, the necessity to differentiate between your business and your competitors is of the utmost importance to your success.

Begin with your logo - it visually identifies your business from others and communicates to your clients what your business is all about. Be clear about how you see your business and how you want it to be perceived by your clients.

Now you have your logo, what do you do with it? You build your identity using your logo. Be consistent - use the same colours, fonts and styles.

So what about branding? Think of your brand as the personality of your business, with your clients perceiving the personality of your brand through their emotional associations with its identity.

Go back to your logo design where you were clear about how you want your business to be perceived. Cheap and cheerful? Consistent and reliable? Elite and aspirational? Your brand is built on how your customers perceive their experience with your company.

Looking after your bones

Looking after our bones is an important part of our health regimen and it is important to be aware of this from early on in your life before diseases such as osteoporosis may set in.

Osteoporosis means porous bones and occurs when our bones lose minerals - principally calcium; and the body can't replace them quickly enough. The result is that our bones become fragile and brittle and break and crack more easily than they used to. All bones are at risk, but the most common fractures occur in the spine, the hip and the wrist.

According to Osteoporosis Australia, about 6.6 million Australians have low bone density which puts us at risk of a bone fracture with serious, sometimes fatal consequences. Presently, every 5-6 minutes someone is admitted to an Australian hospital with a fracture resulting from osteoporosis; and this is likely to increase to every 3-4 minutes within the next 10 years.

Most osteoporosis medicine is prescribed for many years and patients around Australia have benefited from the long-term use of osteoporosis medicines in slowing bone loss and reducing risk offracture.

You can get more detailed information about looking after your bones and the effects of medicines on driving, from pharmades providing the Self Care health information. Ring 1300 369 772 or log onto the Pharmaceutical Society website at www.psa.org.au and click on Self Care then 'Use the Self Care Pharmacy Finder' for the nearest location.

AJer well over half a century

Carrington's first ever shop is on the market. Built around 1897 it . up for sale for just the second

time in its history. 121 Young Street last changed hands

from the original family owner in 1957. In addition to its history, a unique feature of the property is its dual zoning; residential and zoned general industrial.

The property was first opened as a

general store. Inside the home today, it retains a semblance of the grandness that it once possessed.

Around the same time as the erection of the house Carrington was going through some major changes. Shortly after the first Carrington Municipal Council was elected in 1887, the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate reported that Young and other streets were veritable "Sloughs of Despond", an apt description considering the topography of the estuarine island from which Carrington evolved." It is a far cry from the trendy and upcom

ing suburb Carrington is today, with its hip coffee shops and well-manicured waterside parks.

The historical property will be going to sale via auction on 14 June 2014 at 12.30pm and this offers an extremely rare opportunity to own a piece of Newcastle's history and dual zoned house in a sought-after location.

Carrington's first original shop is on the market representing a rare and exciting opportunity. Join Carrington and help bring one of our original buildings back to its former glory. This residential home retains many original features.

Entering the property there are two separate living spaces flowing onto a galley style kitchen with separate dining room. The ground floor features the sweeping stair case which leads up to two large bedrooms with main looking out onto a large deck with views all the way up Young Street's village shopping area.

Renovate and rejuvenate this classic Carrington building and help preserve it for many more years to come, this home is a project needs repair and upgrade but once complete will reap financial and community rewards.

The 20th FIFA World Cup in Brazil sees our Socceroos join 31 nations in the quest for glory in the final to be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 13.

Australia begin their World CUp campaign against Chile in the early hours of June 14 (Australian time). They will then take on the Netherlands on June 19 (Australian time) and Spain on June 24 (Australian time).

Prior to that, Australia have organised a friendly against Croatia on June 7 (Australian time) to finalise preparations.

Considering that Spain and the Netherlands finished first and second in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, many pundits have dismissed Australia's chances of progressing to the Round of 16.

But we know that Australian teams can rise to the occasion in elite company.

Socceroos midfielder Mark Bresciano said the focus of the team's effort will be to do Australia proud and to "try and shock the world. We all have great opportunities to show our abilities, to show the strength of our team to the rest of the world. It's always a dream going to a World Cup, regardless if it's your first or third," said Bresciano, who was part of Australia's World Cup squads in 2006 and 2010.

" I guess the expectation is maybe a little bit high because, in the last nine or 10 years, we've been very successful as a nation."

Coach Ange Postecoglou was happy with the squad's preparation for the opening match against Chile, despite only managing a draw against South Africa last week in their friendly in Sydney.

"Whilst you want to win every game and it would give everyone a warm and fuzzy feeling if we won, from our perspective it's about being ready for game one in the World Cup," Postecoglou said.

"As part of that process we're doing certain things that maybe affected last night's performance but I've seen how hard our guys are training.

"The intent was there but sometimes some over exuberance and a bit of fatigue made things scrappy and we made some poor decisions but it's all part of the process."

Mile Jedinak, currently playing for Crystal Palace in England, was named Australian captain for the World CUp. Jedinak's career in Australia included stints at Sydney United (2001-06), South Coast United, Wollongong (2005) and the Central Coast Mariners (2006-09).

Latest betting markets have installed host country Brazil as favourites, with Argentina, Germany and Spain also at single-figure odds.

VOLVO CAR GROUP has released the first interior images of the All-New Volvo XC90, one of the most anticipated car launches of recent years.

The new interior is the most luxurious to have been designed for a Volvo, taking its inspiration from the country of Volvo's birth, Sweden, which has a longestablished global reputation for integrating the latest technology with design that is clean, beautiful and crafted from the finest materials .

"The most striking feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system," said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Cars.

This system - full details of which will be released at a later date - is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of internet-based products and services. It also helps create an interior that is

modern, spacious and uncluttered. The All-New Volvo XC90's interior

combines soft leather and wood with handcrafted details including a gearlever made of crystal glass from Orrefors, the famous Swedish glass maker, and diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control.

"These details are designed to become the jewels of the interior.

"They add a bit of exclusive playfulness rather than pure functionality," said Robin Page, Volvo Cars' Interior Design Director.

Staying strong in tough times Voice for Mining this Sunday as Knights vow to keep working hard despite disappointing results

• PAUL MONFORTE

The Knights have identified basic errors as the major cause for concern after the Warriors delivered their ninth loss in eleven games this season at Mt

Smart Stadium on Sunday. Knights captain Kurt Gidley and coach Wayne

Bennett both said there was a determination amongst the group to fight through the tough times and reverse the clubs fortunes after the 38-18 defeat.

"The message I can give is that we are not going to give up that's for sure," Gidley said.

"There's been a roller coaster of emotions at the moment. From frustration to sadness and all sorts of things.

"At the moment after today I just feel a bit empty, I think that's the word.

"But we are not giving up that's for sure." Three Warriors tries on the last tackle was

particularly frustrating for Gidley. "We put plenty of effort into it and plenty of

fight but those last play tries are really frustrating," he says.

"If you're prepared to work hard for five tack-

The Knights are not short on effort despite results not going their way this season

les but not the last one it just wears away at you. "Three tries off last plays is just not good

enough." Bennett echoed Gidley's comments and said

it was not in his nature to give up. "They wouldn't have dug in as long as they

did today if! had given up.

"Because there has been many times that I've been down and in tough situations but I've never given up.

"So I know that isn't going to happen and if they do they won't be in the team.

"You can't tolerate that. I'll tolerate the rest of it but I won't tolerate that."

Tyrone Roberts was the pick of the Knights, while centre Joey Leilua, fullback Darius Boyd and back-rower Robbie Rochow also impressed.

Adam Cuthbertson will be missing for four to six weeks after suffering a grade two medial ligament injury in the loss to the Warriors.

Jarrod Mullen received a knock to a shoulder and will be assessed in the lead-up to Sunday's match, while Beau Scott (neck) and Akuila Uate (knee) are expected to return after missing the Warriors game. Timana Tahu is set to return in NSW Cup following off-seasonACL reconstruction surgery.

The Knights returned to Newcastle on Monday evening and return to Hunter Stadium this Sunday for the clash with the Wests Tigers which kicks offat 2pm.

The Knights will wear their special edition hi-viz replica mining jersey against the Tigers to celebrate the Voice for Mining Day.

The mining jersey is available to purchase from the Hunter Sport Superstore and online at www.newcastleknights.com.au

The Voice for Mining Day is expected to draw the biggest crowd Hunter Stadium will see this season with last year's event seeing close to 25,000 people pack the stadium.
