Summer 2010 - Volume 5, Number 2

It is hard to keep from taking this area for granted, since we live and work in such an amazing place-- a place where five generations of our family have been fortunate enough to call home.

For many of you, Purity Spring, Danforth Bay, The Bluffs, King Pine and Tohko have grown to be your home away from home. We’re proud to have made so many friends over

the years, and we hope to see every-one back again soon!

This season, we’ve once again reinvested thousands of dollars into the resorts to add to your experience during your stay. From room and site upgrades and new playgrounds to the redevelopment of Lakeside Cottage on Purity Lake, the comfort of our guests continue to be top priority.

We invite you to visit us this

season, whether it’s a vacation at Purity Spring, an RV getaway at Danforth Bay, or enrolling your son at Tohkomeupog. When you’re here, make sure you let us know how we’re doing-- we love to hear from you!

Environmental sustainability touches virtually every aspect of the new Lakeside Cottage - includ-ing the use of energy-efficient E-glass, insulation, ventilation and other high-efficiency products.

I remember...

Paddling thru the fog by the beach andthe chill of the loons early morning calls.

The crisp of the morning air and the scentof bacon sizzling over an open fire.

The summery sounds of kids laughing in the distance splashing into clear blue waters.

Paddling back to sweet summer dreams.

LakEsidE CottagE gEts a nEw LifE by thE LakE Over the years one of the many favorite places to stay at Purity Spring has been rooms 148 and 149, or better known as the Lakeside Cottage. Built in the late 1800’s and once serving as a gas station when automobiles became popular, Lakeside was recently razed and replaced on its origi-nal footprint with a more environmentally friendly structure.

Overlooking Purity Lake and central to beach areas, the indoor pool and The Inn Dining Room, it’s easy to understand why Lakeside was favorite to many guests. Even during the winter months, Lakeside offers fantastic views of the snow-covered lake and is just steps away from numerous snow-shoe and XC ski trails.

brEakfast Cookouts on roCky Point written by Johanna NationWhen I first spot the plume of smoke rising above the trees at Rocky Point, I know summer has officially arrived. Images of red-checked tablecloths and bubbling omelets mingle with the sounds of lapping water and popping firewood in my trove of pleasant Purity Spring memories.

A few seasons ago, Brenda and I decided that it was high time we saw what all the fuss was about: guests often bragged about Breakfast Cookout as being one of the high-lights of summer here on Purity Lake. As Purity Spring reser-vations staff, we figured that we couldn’t very well explain something we hadn’t experi-enced ourselves, so we set off one Monday morning to King Pine Beach.

Kayaks and canoes lined the sunlit beach that morning, just beckoning us to slide into the cool lake and paddle over to Rocky Point. Of course, drift-ing was not an option. My stom-ach was growling and besides, Breakfast Cookout only lasts an hour. We certainly didn’t want to miss out on all the wood-fired delicacies! So, we powered our kayaks forward, steering ourselves toward the billowing smoke.

On the far shore, we beached our crafts and walked up the embankment. We were greeted by a hushed, almost subdued, excitement. There were plenty of guests and staff there, even young children, and yet it seemed that the noise of human activity could not quite pen-etrate the tranquility of that morning.

Then the aroma hit us. Wood fire, sizzling bacon and eggs, pine and earth, insect repel-lent: the smell of camp, the smell of sum-mer! We eagerly joined the line for plates and utensils and were surprised by the variety of

bagels, muffins, coffee cake and toast, along with enough juice, milk and hot drinks for about twice as many people. A cook was even on hand to toast our bread over a stone-ringed campfire.

But the main attraction was just a few steps away. Enclosed by a wall of concrete blocks was one of the longest wood fires I’d ever seen - not a roaring, blazing fire, but a controlled cook fire that snapped and crackled in a low, primal rhythm.

Talented omelet cooks pre-pared eggs and bacon to order. It’s not every day that guests enjoy a special meal provided by a resort owner, but Bob Hoyt happily and skillfully serves up two such meals every week. He and self-proclaimed “Head Egg-Cracker” Brian Hampton are clearly old pros at camp cookery. Everything was done to perfection.

Complemented by a strong cup of coffee, the hot break-fast made for the ideal sum-mer morning sustenance. Brenda and I chatted with the guests at one of the many pic-nic tables while surrounded by an easy feeling of community and contentment. As the fires died down and the guests began to depart for the day’s activities, I found myself dis-

appointed that the experience had so quickly come to an end.

Reluctantly, I put on my life jacket and launched my kayak into the water. I thought about how lucky our summer guests are to experience Breakfast Cookout and how much I myself had enjoyed it.

Here’s to another summer season – one filled with endless merry-making, and memory-making, events like the one I experienced that one mellow morning on Rocky Point.

“it’s not every day that guests enjoy a special meal provided by a resort owner, but bob hoyt happily and skillfully serves up two such meals every week. he and self-proclaimed “head egg-cracker” brian hampton are clearly old pros at camp cookery. Everything was done to perfection.”

Hosting weddings at Purity Spring Resort is a special and unique experience. Couples always have visions of their dream wedding celebration and are continually amazed that their expecta-tions are met and exceeded at Purity Spring. With 1,000 picturesque acres, countless ceremony and reception locations are available around the resort.

This July, we will begin hosting tented wedding celebrations on the summit of King Pine. Many couples have exchanged their wedding vows at this beautiful location and the de-cision to offer receptions has been well received. The talented resort maintenance staff have created a level area that is perfect for a 40’x60’ tent, enabling us to con-tinue with our “green” philosophy. Also new for 2010, wedding guests and bridal parties now have the additional option of taking the chair lift to the summit of King Pine.

Destination weddings are a specialty of Pu-rity Spring. Family and friends are able to stay in the same spacious lodge as the reception hall, with 18 guest rooms and 2 common rooms. Many couples kick off their wedding weekend

with a fun BBQ, softball game and campfire, complete with s’mores, of course. After breakfast on the morning of the wedding, there is often time for a nice hike on the re-sort’s Audubon trails, or a paddle or swim in Purity Lake.

Each wedding celebration is completely customized for each unique couple by our talented

wedding coordinator, Laurie Campbell, who has 24 years of experience and plenty of great sto-ries to share. To start planning your dream wedding celebration, contact Laurie Camp-bell at [email protected] or call (800) 373-3754 x225 .

thE inn dining room oPEns to thE PubLiCAfter almost 100 years of serving meals to just resort guests, the Hoyt Family will open The Inn Dining Room to the general public. Appropri-ately named ‘Traditions’, the restaurant will be open to the public 4 days weekly and continue to serve “classic, New England-style dining that resort guests have raved about for years.

“We feel that opening our dining room to the community will allow us to better serve our house guests”, says Steven Hoyt, lodging man-ager. “Of course this will also allow us to show off the culinary skills of Chef Trevor Tasker as well.” Look for Traditions to open this fall.

it’s Just what QuiLtErs doPurity Spring Resort has been hosting fun quilt workshops and retreats for many years and we are always impressed with the quilters’ cre-ativity and warm personalities. Behind their smiles are hours of wonderful deeds:

The Material Girls of North Conway, NH, www.haletomaterialgirlsnh.blogspot.com, make quilts for many non-profits and charities including: Starting Point, Wrap-a-Smile, Project Linus, Camp Sunshine, Katrina victims and lo-cal hospitals, nursing and veterans homes. The Material Girls are currently working on quilts that will go to our troops in Afghanistan.

The Fabric Stash Quilt Shop in Charlton, MA, www.fabstash.com, has been associated with Purity Spring’s quilt gatherings since the beginning. Shop owner, Laurel Wilbur, is participating in the One Million Pillowcase Challenge.

humorous CamPing nEwsThis year’s runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased a new 32-foot Winnebago motor home.

On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver’s seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner’s manual that she couldn’t actu-ally leave the driver’s seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down? $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.

RVTV and NH Chronicle recently visited Dan-forth Bay and The Bluffs to tape footage for upcoming TV segments. NH Chronicle and RVTV focused on the highlights of each resort including the campgrounds’ 5-star Woodall’s

rated facilities and recreation options. Making an appearance in either of the TV programs were Bluffs seasonals, Danforth Bay visitors, the Danforth Activities Crew, Craig Niiler, As-sistant Campground Manager and Bob Hoyt, President of Purity Spring Resort, Inc.

RVTV, www.rvtv.ca, produces relevant, topi-cal shows to inform and entertain the RVing community. RVTV produces footage for the Ver-

sus Channel and VHSD. Footage will be avail-able in the area through Time Warner, Direct TV and DISH networks. Actual air times have not yet been determined, but are expected to air in late July.

NH Chronicle, www.wmur.com/chronicle, airs weekdays at 7:30 p.m. on WMUR Chan-nel 9 and focuses on the people, places and trends that give the Granite State its unique character. Hosts Tom Griffith and Tiffany Eddy were on hand at Danforth Bay and filmed from a number of areas around the resort. The staff and many Danforth guests got to witness much of the shooting in action.

Chronicle taped an entire week of footage at Danforth Bay, which was the venue for the introduction segments for a week of Chronicle shows. One segment during that week focused entirely on Danforth and The Bluffs while an-other was shot from the inside of a new 2010, 42’ Tiffin luxury motor home. The segments aired in early July and are now available to view on the link below.

Browse any of our websites and you’ll notice a “Resort Map” button at the top of each page. The old static resort maps have been replaced with interactive ones that fea-ture numerous clickable icons. The icons display essential in-formation about lodging and site options as well as photo-graphs and videos.

The Purity Spring interac-tive map allows you to click on each lodging building around the resort, browse room pic-tures and read information about the rooms or buildings. Additional icons show swim-ming and beach areas, as well as where bike rentals are locat-ed plus the level of difficulty of each mountain bike and hiking trail around the resort. Binocular icons on the map pinpoint where good sightseeing locations are and display pic-tures of the view from that point on the trail.

The Danforth Bay interactive map has pic-tures of every rentable site. Click on an activity

icon like the tie-dye t-shirt to see where that ac-tivity takes place. Click on the P icon for avail-able parking locations for the beach areas or

your visiting guests. For The Bluffs, ‘long-term’

rentals and available ‘season-al sites’ are clickable with site pictures. Guests interested in renting a Bluffs site can now see which sites are still avail-able as well as what they look like. This can be especially helpful to save time before tak-ing a resort tour.

Our favorite part about the new interactive maps is that guests now have the ability to upload their best vacation pho-tos and videos to share with others viewing the map. It’s even possible to create a pri-

vate photo map and share it with family and friends. To upload, simply click on the “upload” button and select the area on the map where the photo was taken; a camera icon will appear with your photo attached once the photo has

been approved. Don’t forget to upload your “I Love it Here” photos (see story on previous page) to the interactive map for your chance to win a 2-night stay at King Pine and Purity Spring this winter!

These maps are fun and meant to be ex-plored! Perhaps you’ll discover something new about your favorite resort!

In October of 2009, with incredible support from our local community, Halloween Town was established on the grounds of Camp Tohkome-upog in East Madison, NH. Hundreds of enthu-siastic volunteers combined creative talent to bring to life this uniquely fun and fantastic ex-perience for ‘trick-or-treaters’ to enjoy.

Despite relentlessly heavy rains, about 300 people turned out to explore the haunted pathways of Halloween Town, visiting a series of theatri-cally transformed cabins in the search for treats… and adven-ture. As impressive as we felt the numbers were, feedback we received assures us that numbers will grow dramatically in future years.

One simple fact is that the traditional ability to ‘trick-or-treat’ is somewhat limited in our community, especially in areas where houses are few and far between. Walking the ‘Trick-or-Treat Trail’ at Halloween Town offers our kids a safe, entertaining way to celebrate the holiday.

In terms of the Laura Foundation, Halloween Town serves two purposes. For one, we use the event to raise awareness about our existence… and also, of course, about our mission, which focuses on individuals living with autism and

epilepsy. Check out www.thelaurafoundation.org for more information.

Halloween Town is also a fund-raiser for our organization. We intend to offer an expanded food court this year, as well as a variety of souvenir items. We are considering adding an amusement component with a separate entrance fee. We also hope to collect voluntary donations at the event.

While we do intend to raise money at Halloween Town, it is our desire that there be no admission fee for the ‘trick-or-treat’ portion of the event. This is good, old-fash-ioned Halloween fun; we simply want kids to

come and enjoy! We can do this thanks to the generosity and support from local businesses throughout the valley.

It is my hope that many of our local business sponsors will actually join us for the event itself, either as a volunteer or as a guest. Actually experienc-ing the energy, the spirit, and the collective heart that brings Halloween Town to reality will offer a better understanding of the heart and spirit of The Laura Foundation.

It takes a tremendous amount of planning to pull off an event of this complexity and magnitude. For the Halloween Town Council, our efforts culminate in one intense, yet relatively quick-lived moment, then we catch our breath. The question is, why do we pour so much energy into this one moment?

For families living with autistic kids, the intensity of the effort is on-going; each moment

connects to the next… and it can be difficult to catch your breath. It is for those families that The Laura Foundation has been established.

So there in lies the answer… we believe this to be a very worthwhile effort inspired by a very a worthy cause.

For those who would like to support our Halloween Town efforts and The Laura Foundation, but who are unable to be physically present at the event, we welcome you to make a donation as a “Friendly Ghost”. Remember, your contribution is tax deductible. Payment may be made to The Laura Foundation and sent to the address below.

Any financial assistance we receive will be put towards a good cause, both for the experi-ence of the kids, as well as the betterment of the Foundation. The Laura Foundation is a registered non-profit ‘501c3’ organization, (I.D. #: 26-2419296).

“this is good, old-fashioned halloween fun; we simply want kids to come and enjoy! we can do this thanks to the generosity and sup-port from local busi-nesses throughout the valley.”

Unlike the start of summer 2010, the past few summers have been quite rainy and wet, mak-ing Purity Spring’s ball field unusable for Resort guests and Tohko campers due to flooding. The Hoyt family decided it was time for a new base-ball field and construction began in October 2009.

At last summer’s Tohko Alumni meeting, a proposal was brought forward regarding the new field. As part of their desire and mission to pro-vide the best possible camping experience to as many campers as possible, the Alumni vot-ed to make a contribution to the procurement of a backstop for this new field. In this way, the Alumni hoped to show their commitment to as-sisting the Resort in its continuous improvement

of the shared facilities that are so important to all guests, campers and Alumni.

In recognition of the camp’s support, the re-sort generously offered to name the field “Alum-ni Field”. This will serve as a wonderful reminder to campers that their Tohko experience does not end on the day they stop being a camper.

Because the Alumni Association has never allotted any funds for anything other than camp-er scholarships, the tribe raised money through a special capital campaign to complete the back-stop for Alumni Field. The total field project was estimated at $50,000 so the alumni’s ef-forts are part of a much larger commitment. We can now all look forward to using the field this summer and for many years to come.

king PinE ContinuEs snowmaking inVEstmEntsIt may just be summertime, but the folks at King Pine continue to focus on winter and making snow! For the upcoming 2010/11 season, King Pine has purchased 57 energy efficient tower guns in its continued efforts to improve snowmaking efficiency. Two electric compressors have also been purchased as King Pine continues to convert their snowmaking system from diesel to electric. Snowmaking improvements for the 2010/11 season will result in a 40 percent increase pumping capacity.

On the web side of things, look for a mobile-friendly KingPine.com to offer more user-friendly ways to purchase season passes online while improving event registration and advance ski school and equipment rental reservations. Additional improvements also include new food service equipment, additional rental shop inventory and numerous lodging upgrades at King Pine and Purity Spring Resort.

The 4th Annual King Pine Triathlon & Duathlon has grown into a full Multisport Weekend.

This exciting event took place on Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13, 2010. The expansion of the single day KP Tri into the Multisport Weekend resulted in a 40 percent increase in participation.

In previous years, a youth triathlon division took place after the adult races. New for 2010, all youth races were hosted on Saturday and a family relay was added, with strong participation.

KP Tri participants have commented on the wonderful racecourse, which includes a swim in Purity Lake, a bike ride on rambling

NH roads and concludes with a run around the lake and down scenic Sunset Beach Road. The race is known as a perfect season opener for vet-erans looking to dust off the cobwebs as

well as for beginners looking to experience their first race. Many race participants stay at Purity Spring Resort for the weekend, or “Race Central” as it was fondly called.

Mark your calendars for the 5th Annual

Traditions are the norm at Purity Spring and it seems like new ones are popping up more and more lately. Early October in the White Mountains of New Hampshire traditionally means peak fall foliage and most peepers hit the road in search of the amazing autumn col-ors that the region is so well known for. But at Purity Spring, a couple new traditions have taken off that have allowed guests to gain a truly unique perspective on their quest for the best color in the area.

The first two Saturdays of October, including Columbus Day weekend, the Purity Spring shuttle bus pulls up to The Inn Dining Room just after breakfast and eager guests hop aboard for a trip to remember. On October 2nd, the group boards a shuttle and heads off for a tour of the covered bridges of the White Mountains. During Columbus Day Weekend, the group sets off to North Conway for the Peepin’ Paddlers Fall Foliage Tour of the Saco River.

After a hearty breakfast, The Peepin’ Paddlers start their journey at First Bridge in North Conway. Everything needed for a safe journey on the Saco River awaits. From single and double kayaks to life vests and wet bags

are available - as is instruction if needed. As colorful as the journey downstream - every-one’s favorite paddling guide, Kayak Jack, leads the way.

The trip is an easy one through relatively untouched areas of the Conways, past sandy beaches and around scenic twists and bends.

The magnificent colors of the river bank trees over-hanging the shoreline plus distant mountains in the background make this a foli-age trip like no other.

But what helps to make the trip truly memorable is lunch! About halfway through the journey, the group breaks on a sandy

beach to enjoy a specially-prepared lunch com-plete with wine & cheese appetizers (soda for the kids) and a full BBQ hot lunch. Followed up by cookies and brownies, the group heads back to the river for the second half of the journey. Glimpses of wildlife, rope swings if you dare, and amazing views of the Mount Washington Valley are all anticipated pleasures of an autumn paddle down the scenic Saco River.

If paddling isn’t on your fall foliage viewing agenda this year then perhaps our covered bridge tour of the White Mountains is a bet-

ter option. Relax and step back in time while enjoying the spectacular fall colors and his-toric covered bridges of the White Mountains of New Hampshire! With your gracious host, John Nute, serving as your personal tour direc-tor, you’ll visit and hear about bridges in Albany, Conway, Ossipee, Sandwich, Plymouth, Campton and Lincoln... with a trip back over the brilliantly-colored Kancamagus Highway. Don’t worry about traffic because John knows all the short cuts!
