Crystal Falls Ranks #28 in the 50 Top-Selling U.S. Master Planned Communities

In his January issue of Strategic Building Market Intelligence, Peter Dennehy with John Burns Real Estate Consulting ranked Crystal Falls 28th out of the 50 top-selling master planned communities in the U.S. for 2011. Crystal Falls is the number one Master Planned Community in Central Texas.

Master Planned Communities (MPC) are large-scale developments with a wide array of real estate product, multiple builders, diverse amenities and non-residential uses such as schools and commercial. With the listing, Crystal Falls joins the ranks of other affluent communi-ties such as The Woodlands near Houston (2nd place) and

Alamo Ranch in San Antonio (5th place). In the next year, the Lookout Development Group will

begin expansion in the Cap Rock and Grand Mesa sections of the community. Within two years, work is expected to begin on Crystal Falls West on FM 1431. Bill Hinckley, President of The Lookout Group, Inc. said “We will basi-cally be building a new city with an array of home product, schools, regional park with mutiple ball fields and world-class amenities on the most beautiful land in all the Hill Country. It will take Leander all the way to Lake Travis and Jonestown and provide additional amenities for all of our HOA members.”

Work is progressing on the new parking area for the 19th Hole Pavilion and tennis court. The Pavilion is scheduled for completion in time for summer events.

Community-wide Landscaping

Spring Landscaping Alternatives: Living FencesAs spring arrives, families are out-doors enjoying the beautiful weather. Many residents have submitted for ACC approval of landscaping projects such as arbors and fences. In some Crystal Falls communities, traditional solid board fencing is not allowed and owners are frequently looking for ideas to maintain privacy. A great way to achieve privacy with a flair is to plant a fast-growing native Texas Hill Country vine that will cover a steel picket fence and create a beautiful solid wall of green with a variety of bloom colors. Two excellent options are the Confederate Jasmine and the Coral Honeysuckle.

The Confederate Jasmine, also known as Star Jasmine, is an ever-green with beautiful white fragrant flowers and glossy leaves. It is drought and deer resistant, grows up to 20’and is easily trained to climb fences and pergolas. Confederate Jasmine prefers fertile, well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade exposure. Fertilize from early spring to fall with a well-balanced fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Pruning is important to thicken the foliage and increase blooms. The jasmine has a long blooming season, from early spring to November. Please note that all parts of the plant are poisonous to humans and animals.

Because the milky sap is a skin irritant, gloves are recommended for pruning.

Coral Honeysuckle is known for its clusters of bright red tubular flowers produced throughout the spring and summer, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies, and then maturing into orange-red berries that beckon song-birds in late summer and fall. The leaves are glossy green on top and silvery green underneath. Coral Honeysuckle works great on fences and trellises, and can also be used to help control erosion on steep slopes. Although it will grow in partial shade, it blooms best in full sun and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it is generally a low-maintenance plant which is drought tolerant and does not attract any particular pests. “Major Wheeler” stands out as the variety which produces the most flowers.

Looking for a cover for your arbor or pergola? American Wisteria is less invasive than the Chinese and Japanese varieties, blooms faster and makes a beautiful solid cover. The American Wisteria vines flower in lavender or mauve and will sometimes bloom again in September. Although it toler-ates shade, grow it in a sunny area for

best blooming. The subject of many a double take from passersby, this stun-ning bloomer yields large, drooping clusters of fragrant flowers.

Native grasses such as muhly grass are also valid solutions for screening.

Visit your local nursery for ideas and native Texas Hill Country plant selec-tions and craft a unique creation in your own yard!

New Voting Rep Districts In an effort to help voting reps effectively cover the grow-ing number of homeowers throughout Crystal Falls, each voting rep is being assigned a district within their com-munity. This follows the model established for Grand Mesa (see map) allowing closer contact and communication be-tween homeowners and voting reps. The following Crystal Falls Voting Reps list indicates each community’s voting reps, their assigned districts and contact information.

Hill Country Community Ministries is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, a coalition of churches assisted by area businesses, civic organizations, schools and caring individuals that provides food, clothing and other assistance for people in crisis and those living in poverty in southwest Williamson and northwest Travis counties.

Hill Country Ministries Seeks Food, Donations to Help Local Families in Need

We all have times in our lives that we could use a little help. For some in Leander and surrounding areas, Hill Country Community Ministries (HCCM) has been that temporary oasis during an unexpected time of crisis. They have been serving clients out of their modest office for 29 years with food, clothing and a link to other agencies where they can get additional assistance.

But the recent downturn in the economy has taken a toll on the agency and according to Sherry McDonnell, Executive Director of HCCM, “Since 2008 the number of families we serve has increased from an average of 265 per month in 2008 to an average of 412 per month in 2011. The number of family food orders jumped from 2,800 to 4,600, an increase of 64%. Most people don’t realize that we pay maintenance and handling fees for the limited amount of food we receive from the Capital

Area Food Bank, and the supply of food is not keeping up with the need.” HCCM also purchases supplemental food from H-E-B but not enough funds are available to purchase the volume of supplemental food needed. Food donations and financial donations are not keeping pace with the increased need (HCCM distributes 35-40,000 lbs of food per month), and summer is their most critical time.

Approximately half of the clients have lost their jobs (some are profes-

sionals such as engineers and accoun-tants). There are families working several jobs but still living in poverty, the elderly and those who have been hit by an unexpected medical emer-gency or injury which they have not been able to recover from financially.

After completing an intake inter-view, each family is qualified based on income and need. Every four weeks, each family receives 80-150 lbs of food (approximately one week’s supply, based on family size). In addition, the Clothes Closet provides gently used clothing as well as new socks and underwear. HCCM also pro-vides referrals and helps clients access other resources in the community.

A list of the most critically needed items and how you can help local families in need are available on their website at http://www.HCCM.org.

HCCM is located at 1005 Lacy Dr. in Leander. For hours of operation or questions call 259-0360.

“The number of family food orders jumped ... 64% ...and the supply of food is not keeping up with the need.”

The Texas Middle School Association (TMSA) selected six exemplary middle schools from urban, suburban and rural communities in Texas for recognition in academic excellence, responsiveness to the needs and interests of students and commitment to helping all students achieve at high levels. In addition, each school has strong leader-ship, teachers who work together to improve curriculum and instruction, and a commitment to assessment and accountability to bring about continuous improvement. These schools, varying in size from several hundred to thousands of students, are recognized for a three-year period and serve as models for other middle schools in the State of Texas, demonstrating a clear focus on academic growth and achievement.

Leander Middle School (LMS) was one of the six schools selected for this honor. During the selection process, officials visited LMS and observed classrooms, interviewed parents and reviewed achievement data, suspension rates, quality of lessons and student work. Principal Sandy Trujillo stated, “On behalf of our campus, we are thrilled to be named a 2012 Texas School to Watch. This recognition is a tribute to the teachers and staff at LMS who put a clear focus on student learning and of course to our terrific students who commit each day to doing their best.” Visit www.texasschoolstowatch.com to learn more about the Texas Schools to Watch program.
