Ski, Zip, Hike or Slide Down This Renowned Year-Round Entertainment Landmark
Gunstock Mountain
Think of the Gunstock Mountain Resort, and visions of hurtling down perfectly-groomed trails or gliding silently through brilliantly-
illuminated glades at night may spring to mind. And while these things do happen all winter long at the Gilford resort, the reality is that Gunstock is a year-round attraction with activities for outdoors enthusiasts, no matter what the season.
This year marks the opening of the resort’s new Summer Tubing experience – a chance for visitors to race down the mountain as they would atop an icy surface – only this speedy affair takes place in the warmer months. It’s much like any other tubing adventure: a rapid, downhill excursion on an inflated tube, zip-ping past trees and spinning across the green mountainside. Engineers have crafted a track made of synthetic material that can be used in all weather conditions, including warm sum-mer days. It’s the first such tubing option in the Lakes Region, and it allows winter sports enthusiasts to carry their love of tradition-
ally snow-based adventures into the summer months.
“It allows us to use some of the things we enjoy in the winter, in the summer,” Bill Quig-ley, Gunstock’s director of sales and marketing says of the mountain’s year-round offerings. “We’re really focusing on summer activities for the entire family, whether they’re five or 500.”
The mountain’s renowned Gunstock ZipTour – a zip line canopy tour – whips guests across the treetops at speeds that will leave even the most ardent adrenaline junkie catching his or her breath. The Gunstock Zip Tour is made up of a series of five different zip lines. The first two, designed for training and demonstration purposes are located near the Admissions Center, and reach speeds between six and 15 miles-per-hour. From there, things ramp up significantly: The Summit Zip is 273 feet long, puts participants 20 feet off the ground and hits 25 miles-per hour; the Recoil Zip takes it to the next level, with a length of 3,981 feet and a vertical drop of 688 feet; the Pistol Zip is 3,804 feet long. Both the Recoil and Pistol
send adventurers flying across the treetops at more than 60 miles-per-hour – sometimes much more.
“There’s a lot of fun to be had flying down the mountain at 80 miles-per-hour on a two-ton steel cable,” Quigley says of the attraction, now in its fourth summer. “The highest speed recorded is over 80 miles-per-hour. Given the right conditions, the gravity and the right shape, you can reach 80 miles-per-hour.”
Visitors who want to spend even more time among the trees can take part in Gunstock’s Aerial Treetop Adventures: a series of aerial obstacle courses that provide challenges with an unmatched view. There are 91 different challenges suspended high above the ground along eight different courses, including the Explorer Course, which is just for kids. The experience starts on the Green Course, which is the easiest and closest to the ground. The challenges increase in difficulty and height, eventually topping out on the Black Course, which is more than 100 feet off the ground and offers some of the most difficult chal-

lenges. Games range from climbing ladders, foot bridges and nets, to sliding along ziplines and riding seesaws, traversing cable and log ladders and swinging along suspended rings.
For those who are interested in keeping a little closer to the beautiful grounds of the scenic resort, the Off-Road Segway Tour may be perfect. Guests trek through the trails of Gunstock atop these two-wheeled, self-balanc-ing transports, which are specifically designed to maneuver across the varied terrain of the mountain’s scenic trail system.
The resort also offers swimming, skate-boarding, camping, hiking, fishing and moun-tain biking. And while there is no lift service for mountain bikers, there is a full network of trails on the alpine side – more than 50 kilometers total – which is perfect for hiking and trekking, as well.
There’s plenty to do during the months when snow is scarce, but this venerable New Hampshire resort may be best known for its skiing – and rightly so: this family ski resort traces its lineage back to 1937. Over the years it’s grown to incorporate 55 runs with a verti-cal drop of more than 1,400 feet across 2,200 acres, with trails ranging from gentle and welcoming to steep and challenging. Skiers are whisked to the top via one high speed quad, two quads, two triples, one double and two surface lifts. Bundle up and head out for some alpine or cross-country skiing (night skiing is available on 24 trails serviced by six lifts), snowboarding, snow tubing, ski jumping, snowshoeing or winter camping.
Guests can also bring along their furry, four-legged best friend to try out skijoring – a way to enjoy the slopes alongside Fido. Skijoring is a unique experience where skiers are pulled along the trail by a dog – attached by a special harness for a fast-moving, hands-free excur-sion. Gunstock has more than 15 kilometers of trails specifically prepared for this invigorating experience.
Lessons are also available for anyone interested in trying some of the many winter sports at the resort, including cross-country skiing, Nordic skiing and skijoring. Guided tours are also offered at Gunstock Snowshoe Park, which boasts more than 50 kilometers of trails that wind through the varied environ-ments. Rolling double track trails give way to wooded single track pathways, and partici-pants will travel past inspiring vistas of the surrounding White Mountains, through forests and past rivers, and even breathtaking views of Lake Winnipesaukee. Saturday night ridge tours are also available. (To book lessons or guided tours, call (603) 293-4341, ext. 192.)
Dining options at Gunstock are also plentiful year-round. During the winter, visit the Cobble Mountain Food Court or the Pistol Pub in the Main Lodge, the Stockade Lodge near the Ramrod Quad or the Panorama Pub at the top of the mountain.
The Powder Keg Restaurant, also in the Main Lodge, is the site’s premier restaurant – and the beneficiary of a recent makeover. The eatery was completely redesigned and built anew based on what guests were telling the resort’s managers. That attention to visitors’ needs, Quigley says, is part of what sets Gun-stock apart from other mountain resorts.
“We’re investing our capital dollars based on guest research comments,” he says. “We’re addressing the needs of our guests through research to improve a product that was started in 1937.”
Powder Keg improvements have created a comfortable, inviting space where skiers can warm up with a bowl of chili or chowder, indulge in an order of fish and chips or grilled buffalo tenders or order up a warming concoc-tion from the bar.
In the summer, the Panorama Pub provides a great place to grab a bite to eat while offer-ing an amazing view of Lake Winnipesaukee.
“When you get to the summit of Gunstock, it’s a world and an experience only skiers and snowboarders know,” Quigley says. “When you get to look out over Winnipesaukee, it’s pretty darned spectacular. Even in the summer. A lot of people have been on Winnipesaukee, but to see it from elevation and to look down over the lake is amazing.”
The Landing Zone, located adjacent to the final span of the Zip Tour and at the start of the Aerial Treetop Adventures course, provides a perfect spot to grab a burger, turkey leg, wrap or a glass of beer or wine.
The list of things to do at the resort is long and varied, but it all starts with the moun-tain’s welcoming atmosphere. Just 90 minutes from Boston and a little more than an hour from the seacoast, it’s not only packed with activities, it’s nearby.
According to longtime enthusiasts, it’s part of the mountain’s DNA.
“It’s just more fun,” said Quigley. “We’re really focused on making people smile, and that’s a pretty fun thing to be able to say. That’s really what our focus is – making people smile.”

From Lakeside Pathways to Mountain Trails, the Region’s Beauty is Just a Hike Away
Lakes Region Walkabout
There may be no better way to see the Lakes Region’s beauty than from within. From the sun-warmed emer-ald forests that come to life in the
summer months and the vivid hues that mark each autumn’s arrival, to the austere beauty of its icy winters, the Lakes Region’s natural allure is well-known. This is especially clear to those who plunge into its wilds on one of the many maintained trails that traverse the state.
The trail system that weaves throughout the region offers a plentiful and diverse outlet for anyone hoping to immerse themselves into the carefully curated surroundings. Hik-ers, runners, bikers and cross-country skiers share the environment with a wide variety of wildlife, from a diverse menagerie of birds to playful otters and skittish deer.
The good news for outdoors enthusiasts is that there are many trails to choose from. New Hampshire is home to a wealth of hiking and biking trails – great for a variety of physical pursuits – and the Lakes Region, in particular, hosts some of the most picturesque.
Whatever the season, there are options for those looking to enjoy the Lakes Region’s outdoors offerings:
The WOW Trail
This winding stretch of trail takes its name from its proximity to three area lakes: Win-nisquam, Opechee and Winnipesaukee. Location: Laconia; Street parking is avail-able in downtown Laconia. Parking at the Elm Street end is available on the Street or at the Lake Opechee Inn and Spa (62 Doris Ray Court, Laconia.)Details: The WOW trail is a paved, 10 foot wide path that runs for 1.3 miles from Elm St. to North Main St. near the downtown area. The next phase of the WOW Trail project, scheduled for completion this year, will extend it an ad-ditional 1.1 miles from North Main St. to the Belmont town line. Eventually, the trail will be extended in the other direction – to Weirs Beach and then to Meredith – creating a nine mile pathway adjacent to the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad.Good for: Walking, running, biking.Connect: wowtrail.org
The Northern Rail Trail
More than 58 miles of resurfaced rail trail extend from just north of Concord, up through beautiful Lakes Region countryside and into
Lebanon – all along the Old Northern Railroad. Location: Lebanon, Enfield, Canaan, Orange, Grafton, Danbury, Wilmot, Andover, Franklin and Boscawen. Parking is available at a num-ber of spots along this lengthy trail, including the trailhead at the intersection of Taylor and Spencer Streets in Lebanon.Details: The well-maintained pathway crosses rivers, passes by ponds and lakes, runs through the Orange Summit rock cut and by the Potter Place Railroad Station (on Depot Street in Andover). Traveling from north to south will put you along the Mascoma River at the outset, past a general store near Route 4 in Grafton and eventually rewarding travel-ers with views of the Merrimack River in Boscawen.Good for: Walking, running, biking, horseback riding, wheelchairs, dog walkers, snowmobil-ing, dog sledding and cross country skiing.Connect: northernrailtrailofnh.org
Bicycle enthusiasts can take advantage of a Bike the Northern Rail Trail tour. Seven inns throughout the Lakes Region are linked by this trail, and provide a great opportunity for cyclists, locavores or history buffs. Stay at one of the historic inns, enjoy a gourmet

breakfast before spending the day bicycling along the Northern Rail Trail, and then finish up with dinner at the next stop along the way. Lunches are also provided, and for conve-nience, luggage transportation to the next inn on your stop can also be arranged. For those interested in pedaling through the region but find themselves without two wheel transport, bikes can also be rented for the duration of the trip. (For complete pricing information, visit bikethenorthernrailtrail.com.)
Winnipesaukee River Trail
Winding through wooded sections along the Winnipesaukee River, hikers can enjoy wildlife and unmatched views of the rolling waters nearby.Location: Tilton, Northfield and Franklin; park-ing is available at Trestle View Park on Central St. in Franklin, and there are access sites to the trail in Northfield and at Cross Mills Road in Franklin.Details: This five mile pathway runs parallel to the Winnipesaukee River, past the historic sulphite upside-down covered bridge (1/2 mile east of Franklin Falls) and past the ruins of mills that once powered the Lakes Region economy. Watch for wildlife along the river, including a number of species of birds (including the occasional Bald Eagle), beaver, raccoon, otter and even mink.Good for: Walking, running, biking.Connect: winnirivertrail.org
Odell Park River Walk
A perfect example of the variety of walk-ing and hiking opportunities throughout the region, Odell Park in Franklin combines a well-maintained path with a series of fitness stations. These exercise spots offer people a chance to add some physical exertion to their workouts, with structures that allow for every-thing from pull-ups and stretching to strength training and yoga positions.Location: Franklin; parking is available at the park, with additional space at city hall – a three minute walk away.Details: The walk may be on the shorter side at 1/2 mile, but taking advantage of this unique layout provides an unexpected, pulse-pounding experience. Start out on the scenic hard-pack trail at the gazebo on the left side of the parking lot. Along the route, try out the four fitness stations designed to provide a well-rounded workout. All of the fitness sta-tions are handicapped accessible.Good for: Walking, running, physical and aerobic exercise.Connect: franklinnh.org
“People can walk all the way around, or walk a little ways, do some of the exercises and then walk a little further,” says Director of Parks and Recreation Krystal Alpers.
The park underwent a refurbishment in 2011, which is when the fitness stations were added to the River Walk. The reception, Alpers says, has been overwhelmingly positive.
“We did a big Odell Park centennial revitalization,” she says of the project. “We replaced playground equipment, added the walking trail, an ornamental fence, a fishing pier – there’s a ‘wow factor’ to the complete revitalization.”
Waukewan Highlands Community Park
This hike offers three options of differing lengths, with challenges ranging from simple to moderate. All routes end at a beautiful three-acre pond, so the payoff is substantial.Location: Meredith; parking is available at the trail head on Route 106, about one mile west of Route 3.Details: There are three marked trails here – the White Trail is the shortest, at about 2,000 feet, and is relatively wide and flat; the Red Trail is slightly longer at about 3,000 feet with some rolling terrain that includes two stream crossings; the Blue Trail is the longest of the three at about 5,000 feet, and is the most challenging. The trail here narrows, and there are several vertical climbs. Good for: Walking, running, hiking.Connect: meredithnh.org/Joomla/images/ stories/GoTakleAHike.pdf

Many people visit the area to get a taste of the Lakes Region. Thanks to a clutch of talented restaurateurs, visitors can liter-
ally do just that. With scores of restaurants creating fantas-
tic, delectable foods, the dining scene in the Lakes Region seems to have a common thread running through it: creative, homemade and locally-sourced.
Take, for example, The Local Eatery – a farm-to-table establishment set in an historic train station right in the center of Laconia. Chef/Owner Kevin Halligan’s philosophy has crafted a locally-sourced menu that provides guests with a true taste of New Hampshire.
“It’s one of only a few in the state,” Hal-ligan says of his restaurant’s farm-to-table approach. “And the only one in the Lakes Region.”
Local farms, dairies and breweries take center stage at Halligan’s restaurant, which counts among its many suppliers: Beans and Greens, of Gilford; Loudon’s Meadow Ledge Farm; Minglewood Farm in Laconia; Sap House Meadery in Center Ossipee; Winsome Farm in Piermont; and Brookford Farm in Canterbury. None of the food Halligan uses has traveled more than 138 miles from supplier to the Local Eatery. The menu, which changes regularly, features produce from these suppliers that can range from grilled filet mignon and braised lamb stew to pan-seared jumbo scallops (“the hottest seller no matter how we prepare them – they always sell well,”) to sautéed lobsters and shrimp.
“It’s different and fun and we’re always try-ing to push the limits of what we do,” Halligan says. “We want to give people a different din-ing experience. I want them to think that they just had the best thing they’ve ever eaten, and the truth is, I hear it all the time.”
Halligan can be found crafting those memo-rable menu items in the middle of the restau-rant’s open kitchen (“I get to talk to people about what they want and what they like”). During these exchanges, he regularly receives compliments on his farm-to-table creations – ranging from raves to curiosity about where he’s chosen to locate his business.
“They ask what I’m doing in Laconia,” Halli-gan says of his customers’ queries. “I had five people say that to me last Saturday night.”
The insinuation, of course, is that the chef could be plying his trade in a bigger city at a higher-profile restaurant. The longtime Laconia resident wouldn’t have it any other way, how-ever. The 2002 graduate of the New England Culinary Institute, and married father of four, came to the Lakes Region as a youngster, and with just a few short stays elsewhere, has remained here since.
“It’s where I live,” he says. “And it’s a great place to live – it’s beautiful. It still has a small town feel, and that’s why I always gravitate back here.”
Just a few steps across Veterans Square, visitors can give thanks for excellent food in a former Baptist church-turned restaurant. The Holy Grail of the Lakes – the second eatery set in a former house of worship run by restau-rateur David Kennedy – is one of the newer establishments, and certainly one of the more inventive. Kennedy and his wife, Maureen, also own the Holy Grail, in Epping, which is set in a former Catholic church. The Kennedys and fellow owners Khalid and Wendi Farid, have teamed up to open this Lakes Region Irish pub-themed spot.
“It’s kind of our theme,” Kennedy says of the building, which was moved from where the public library is to its current location in 1903. “It was built in 1836, but we’re turning it into a showcase. It’s going to be beautiful.”
Alongside the historic feel, which includes repurposing much of the original building’s wood, guests will find a few modern touches. The church’s pews have been incorporated into the design, used as booths and around
the bar, but USB plugs are located under the bar – perfect for diners whose phones may be running out of juice. It’s a perfect melding of the traditional and modern.
“We tried to use as much of the original material as we could,” Kennedy says.
Stamped tin covers the walls, a rectangle bar comes off the altar and a choir loft that can seat 70 overlooks an area that can seat an additional 180 diners. Two fireplaces warm the corners of the Irish-themed spot, and take-away food will also be available for diners who prefer to retire to their cottage, campsite, hotel or home.
“It’s a good fit for us,” Kennedy says. “It’s a whole new region, but we had a following in Epping of people with lake houses and who like to go camping and hiking up in the area, so there’s a connection.”
Taking an innovative approaching to dining seems to be a theme that runs through many of the region’s restaurants. Just down the road in Franklin, Ralph and Jo’s Café puts together a menu of homemade offerings that has made it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. A quick look at the menu reveals a level of creativity that keeps regulars returning.
Chuckle at the selections (the Hail Caesar wrap, for example) or order something to fix what ails you. Feeling a little under the weather? Try the Hangover Helper: a burger with sautéed onions and jalapenos topped with a fried egg. The Presley Patty Melt, a nod to “the King”, features grilled raisin bread, peanut butter and banana – all drizzled with a touch of honey.

Extra hungry diners are directed to one specific section of the menu, however. Located under “Over Achievers,” make note the Avalon Avalanche: Fresh cut fries, macaroni salad, a hot dog or burger topped with homemade chili and served in a dog dish. For the brave, head straight for the Tobias Tower of Terror. It’s a stack that starts with a foundation of half a grilled cheese, upon which the following is piled: fried chicken tenders, sautéed peppers, onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, barbecue sauce, bacon, ham, lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo – and then the other half of the grilled cheese.
The three-year-old restaurant, located right on the Main Street in Franklin, is informal, comfortable and sources food from nearby producers, including Jehu Hot Sauces made in Laconia.
Right across town from Jehu, the lights at Annie’s Café and Catering are on quite early every day. Owner Annie Bridgeman is already hard at work, baking, prepping and diving into paperwork at her five and a half year old Union Ave. business.
“There is no typical day,” Bridgeman says. “I’m usually in an apron all day.”
Bridgeman is the creative force behind the café and caterer, which may be best-known for its homemade fare.
“It’s right in our tag-line,” she says, refer-ring to the ‘creative, fresh and delicious’ mod-ifier. “Everything is fresh and we make sure it’s delicious. We take a lot of familiar foods and put a fresh twist with unique finishes.”
Bridgeman likens her ‘comfort food with a twist’ to a great pair of shoes everyone has – only these are “jazzed up with sparkles.”
Annie’s often takes a seasonal approach to its offerings. As the weather starts to warm up, expect a sense of renewal to influence the menu. During the colder months, head inside for something warm and comforting. And on Fridays, just go in because it’s “Free Cookie Friday.”
“It’s our nice way of saying thank you for coming in,” she says. “It’s fun, and why not? We’re grateful for the people that come in.”
Locals flock to the spot for a number of fa-vorites, including Annie’s well-known Healthy Oatmeal Bars, the butternut pesto lasagna, Hippie Cookies (made with homemade granola and chocolate and butterscotch chips,) home-made quiches and a variety of soups.
“I’d like everyone to leave very happy,” Bridgeman says. “I want them to think, ‘from there, good things come.’ I want them to feel happy and to feel satisfied with both what they had as well as how much it cost – to feel like they got a great value.
“We want to exceed expectations, but first we have to make sure we’re meeting them,” Bridgeman says. “We have to stay in tune with what people want because it’s not the same for each person.

Hermit Woods Winery Involves Fans, Enthusiasts
Meredith Winemaker Breaking New Ground
If you think fruit wines can’t possess the cache of a painstakingly aged selection from a Burgundy grand cru vineyard, the founders of Hermit Woods Winery would
like to have a word with you. Hermit Woods, a Meredith-based winery
producing a number of hand-crafted wines, specializes in boutique offerings that target even the most discerning palate. A visit to the winery itself will make that clear.
Located on the corner of Dover and Main Streets – the small thoroughfare on which several small shops and the town’s post office are situated – Hermit Woods is quietly chang-ing how such wines are made, how they’re marketed and how they’re perceived.
Venture up a few hundred feet from the big lake and look for the tall, tan building with white trim, welcoming deck and the instantly identifiable logo frosted across its front doors. Step inside, just under the half-round window that allows natural illumination to bathe the bright, airy tasting room in natural light, and you’ll likely be greeted by one of the three partners: Bob Manley, Ken Hardcastle or Chuck Lawrence.
“We have a policy – we greet every person at the door,” Manley says. “Ideally I greet them at the door. I tell them right away, ‘give me a minute. I know what you think, and fruit wine is not what you think it is.’”
For Manley, in particular, it’s a way to head-off any misconceptions when people discover there are fruit wines behind the bar. The reputation, given the history of sometimes overly-sweet offerings by other vinters, may not be the most stellar among wine enthusi-asts. This is where Hermit Woods breaks from the pack. The Hermit Woods fruit wines are quite different, and Manley will tell you so.
“The reason I take this approach, is that I’m really passionate about this,” he says. “I really love it and I’m so excited about what we do every day.”
Hermit Woods wines are barrel-aged, some-thing that’s almost unheard of for the style. The result is something quite unlike other fruit wines. They are dry, complex, with a depth of character not normally present in fruit wines. Additionally, they are vegan (aside from the honey wines), gluten free, raw, made from non-certified but mostly-organic orchards,
small gardens and foraged fruit.“We traveled recently to California and we
spent time with winemakers in Napa and in Lodi and in the Sacramento area,” Manley says. “We shared some of our wine with them and we had the respect of Napa and Lodi winemakers – some of the best winemakers in Napa. They enjoyed our wine so we’re starting to feel like we’re getting to that place with wine people.”
That enthusiasm is evident on the shelves in the newly-renovated Main St. space, at the bar in the tasting room, and in the French and American Oak barrels aging the Hermit Woods harvest in the rooms below. Yet it’s perhaps most conspicuous in the way the company has engaged the people who live in the Lakes Region. As members of the community, the three founders reach out to interested neigh-bors and residents to include them in the process whenever possible.
The unique Hermit Shares program allows enthusiasts and environmentally-connected residents to take an actual role in the wine-making process. Much of the fruit used in the Hermit Woods wines is hand-picked, and a

good portion of it by the founders themselves, and customers.
“If you have fruit of any type, and we use it in our wine production – if we consider it of the quality we need and it is organic – you can bring your fruit in and we will exchange it at a wholesale price for Hermit Shares, which you can then exchange for wine in the shop,” Manley explains.
Many people save their Hermit Shares and use them to buy the wine that their fruit actually made. Participants in the Hermit Shares program often bring in rhubarb, (it grows “beautifully and organically all over the place,”) blackberries, raspberries and quince.
On a larger scale, Hermit Woods works with as many local farmers as possible, always searching for high-quality, organic fruits. It’s all part of the winemakers’ larger plan.
“There are some core principles we devel-oped when we opened this winery that we have tried our best to stay true to and will continue to stay true to for as long as we’re in existence,” Manley says. “One of those is to make the best quality product that we
can absolutely make. We don’t compromise anywhere. If we find blueberries, we want the best blueberries – and you’d think that’s obvi-ous, isn’t it? Actually, quite to the contrary.”
Manly says the company was contacted by a blueberry provider, (the winery goes through more than 12,000 pounds annually) who offered produce at a reduced rate – the best “seconds” available. For Hermit Woods, anything second-tier won’t do.
“It just seemed so counter-intuitive to me,” Manley says. “Grape growers spend millions of dollars trying to grow the best-quality grapes they can absolutely grow to make grape wine, but yet people feel that with fruit, for some reason, there’s a difference – an ability to compromise. We don’t. We want the best fruit and we want to make the best quality wine that we can make.”
The results have been noticeable. Hermit Woods’ Petite Blue, which is made up of a pound of fresh blueberries in every bottle, was featured on the “Today” show on NBC, where it ended up in the glasses of wine lovers/hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.
Among the long list of unique offering is Hermit Woods’ Kiwi Wine – made from whole, local, organic kiwi berries, which are rich in vitamin C and similar in flavor to the common New Zealand kiwi. It can be compared to a dry Riesling or a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
For Manley, it all comes back to the Hermit Woods fundamentals.
“We want to be local, we want to support local businesses and farmers and we want to support the local economy,” he says. “We do this because it’s something we’re passionate about and we love to do – not because we’re trying to make a buck. Ken and I come in to work every day feeling very fortunate that we get to do what we love every single day.”

Who is the Hermit?
There actually was a hermit who lived in the woods not far from the winery, and who has since
been immortalized in casks, bottles and glasses of Lakes Region-produced wine.
The namesake of the winery, Joseph Plummer, was the famed hermit of Meredith Hill. Born in
1774, the hermit lived a solitary existence – as hermits generally do – in a primitive home in the
thick of a forest. He later built a barn, but was forced to relocate to a nearby tract of land near the
Meredith/Sanborn line after the flood of 1826.
His new one-room home had no windows, and the door was only four feet tall, but three feet
wide. He was frugal, peculiar and solitary, but received visitors cordially, treating them to cider and
apples. He died at the age of 88 in December of 1862.
The founders of Hermit Woods Winery, fans of the hermit’s tale, have been known to raise a
glass in his memory.

LRCC’s Growth, Expansion Benefits Region’s Students
Lakes Region Learning
Forget what you think you know about two year schools – Lakes Region Community College (LRCC) is redefining it all.
One of seven colleges in the Community College System of New Hampshire, LRCC serves more than 1,400 students annually and offers 27 associate degree programs, including Nurs-ing, Fire Technology, Energy Services, Media Arts, Automotive and Marine Technology and a renowned Culinary Arts program.
The school has undergone dramatic growth in recent years, including physical upgrades, new programs and even entering into an in-novative new agreement with Plymouth State University, designed to make pursuing a four-year degree less complicated.
It’s all part of a period of progress and upgrades at the Laconia school.
“We’ve experienced significant growth over the past five years,” Larissa R. Baia, vice president of Student Services and Enrollment Management says. “The school is significantly different than it was.”
Even a cursory look at LRCC’s recent in-novations reveals a different look on Belmont Road. New projects, including the construction of a new building for its Automotive Service Education Program, have allowed the school to increase its program offerings to students.
“When that building is complete, it will allow us to vacate the space that the automo-tive program currently uses, which we then plan to renovate to bring the culinary program back,” Baia says.
The Culinary Arts Program – a highly-respected offering that attracts students from all over the state – is currently located at the nearby Shaker Village in Canterbury.
“The Culinary Arts Program is one of our fastest growing,” Baia says of the curriculum, which includes Culinary Arts, Pastry Arts and Restaurant Management. “It’s experienced the most significant growth over the past five to ten years.”
The program combines a foundation of culinary and management skills with valuable co-op experience to help prepare participants for a career in the industry.
“We’re lucky to be in such a beautiful place in the Lakes Region,” Baia says. “Because of the tourism, we’re lucky to have chefs and restaurateurs in the industry that bring a lot
of high-quality individuals to this area. We’re able to draw from them – they own restau-rants or have worked for major restaurants. Our faculty is a major part of the strength of that program.”
When the new construction is complete, the program will return to the school’s main campus.
“We love our relationship with the Shaker Village,” Baia says. “It’s been very successful, but the goal is to bring it back to campus.”
The college also recently opened a $6 million Health and Science Building, which houses labs, faculty space and classrooms for the Nursing, Fire Safety and Science programs. The automotive building brings another $3.3 million project to campus, and when complete will include 17 garage bays. The second phase will then include additional classrooms and faculty space, Baia says.
New academic options have also been part of the plan. A new liberal arts track with a health-science concentration is ideal for students intending to continue on to a four- year institution to pursue a degree in biology or health-related science.
Toward that end, the school has entered into a dual-admissions agreement with Plym-outh State University that will give its students a head-start on earning their bachelor’s de-gree. When applying, students at LRCC will see an option that will allow them to choose dual admission. If they choose the option, they can take advantage of an enrollment agree-ment that guarantees acceptance to PSU’s undergraduate program. Students who select dual enrollment will meet with an advisor to discuss the criteria, and if the criteria is met – including maintaining a 2.5 grade point aver-
age – they will be admitted to PSU with junior year status starting in the fall semester.
Within the year, LRCC is planning to offer campus housing. Furnished two- and three- bedroom apartments, fully run and operated by the school, will be available exclusively for LRCC students. Two buildings with 48 apart-ments each are currently under construction. The apartments will include a fully-equipped kitchen, living room, common area, private bathroom, parking, 24-hour security and ac-cess to a laundry facility. Costs are expected to be $3,950 for singles in a two or three-bedroom apartment, and $3,600 per semester for doubles in a two- or three- bedroom apartment.
Costs at LRCC are also down. Last year, the Community College System of New Hampshire lowered tuition at all seven of its institutions by five percent.
“It’s definitely a priority for us to reduce costs for students,” Baia says.
