EDITORrsquoS LETTER

September and October are my favorite months of the year The temperatures cool and the daylight softens while gardens evolve with stunning color The beach is at its most beautiful in the early fall On those rare fall days that bring an unusual blend of dark skies and bright sunlight Lake Michigan takes on a turquoise hue that seems almost unnatural

Fall is a time of renewal as well For mothers of school-age children like me back-to-school time is our New Yearrsquos Day Itrsquos time to leave the lazy days of summer behind and resolve to be more organized and productive tackle those long-delayed projects and commit to healthier habits Farewell margaritas on the front porch Hello yoga class

I was fortunate to become acquainted with Dani Bruflodt of Thyme is Honey who inspired me to become more organized and find time for exercise and community service Her travels to all of the Great Lakes also inspire me to visit more of the beautiful lakeside communities of our region

If your seasonal to-do list includes a special celebration may I introduce Casey Scherrer of VEIL Event Design Creating beauty with flowers and innovative design elements is Caseyrsquos talent but providing opportunities for women to create their own future may be her true calling

It was wonderful to explore two historic Chicago neighborhoods that both play an important role in Chicagorsquos rich architectural and cultural history Plus Dani Bruflodt offers a late-summer itinerary for one of the regionrsquos quintessential college towns

When we moved to Madison we signed a 6-month lease not sure how long wersquod stay but we instantly fell in love and now wersquore coming up on our 4th year as Madisonians

We spend most of our weekends on our bikes and routinely ride 20-30 miles around the city visiting our favorite bars restaurants and activities We love to have guests join us for a bike ride or a walking tour highlighting Madisonrsquos two biggest lakes We have 3 lakes right downtown and it really feels like a city built on the water This plan starts at Monona Terrance on Lake Mendota includes a 13 mile walk down State Street and past some of Madisonrsquos greatest bars and restaurants and then it ends at the University of Wisconsinrsquos Memorial Union Terrance on Lake Mendota (see a walking map here) Itrsquos a great way to see the city

Start by driving downtown via John Nolen Drive (recently named one of the most beautiful commutes in America) which will take you along the shore of Lake Monona and right to Monona Terrace Monona Terrace offers convenient parking so park in their ramp and then take an elevator to their rooftop garden which overlooks the lake with incredible views Therersquos a little cafe up there that is open seasonally Leave by taking the pedestrian walkway toward the capitol where yoursquoll find a great photo op of the capitol on Martin Luther King Blvd Our downtown is focused on the capitol square so yoursquoll find a lot of bars restaurants and museums around there as well as along all the streets that branch off of it State Street is the most popular of these It connects the Wisconsin State Capitol to the University of Wisconsin campus The entire street is lined with bars restaurants and shops Walk from the capitol along State Street to the beautiful UW campus End your trip by visiting UWrsquos Memorial Union Terrace for a beautiful view of

Lake Mendota Itrsquos open to the public and they serve a great selection of local beer as well as Babcock Hall Ice-cream Memorial Union Terrace feels like the heart of Madison in the summer so donrsquot miss it

Pro tips plan this adventure so that you end at Memorial Union Terrace around sunset Yoursquoll have a front-row seat to the sailboats and beautiful sunset views Madison also has a lot going on in the summer months and on various nights yoursquoll find these activities going on along this suggested route

Wednesday Nights Concerts on the Square - we pack our best blankets cheese and wine and cover the lawn around the capitol to play card games and listen to the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra

Friday Nights Live On King Street - a big street party that takes place on most Fridays throughout the summer Plan your trip around your favorite act Therersquos also Rooftop Cinema on various Friday nights at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art

Saturdays The Dane County Farmersrsquo Market - this is worth planning a trip around Our farmersrsquo market is the largest producer-only farmersrsquo market in the United States and features more than 300 vendors situated around the capitol square Grab a coffee a scone and walk the entire market Pick up Stellarsquos Spicy Cheese Bread and some locally made sausage so that you have a snack later in the day

Sunday evenings bring your lawn chair and take in a free Mad-City Ski Team show at Law Park on Lake Monona

Both Monona Terrace and the Memorial Union Terrace have various events and live music happening throughout the summer Check for Monona Terrace Events or Memorial Union Terrace Events

Other favorite things in the area are a Betty Lou Cruise on the lake an afternoon spent at one of our local beaches or trying the cityrsquos best cheese curds My top choices are Gates and Brovi or The Old Fashioned For the best cocktails in the city head to Merchant If yoursquore looking for adventures try canoe camping on the Wisconsin River Itrsquos lined with beaches and sandbars and therersquos no better way to spend a Wisconsin Summer Madison is also a 45-minute drive from Devils Lake a beautiful state park that offers swimming hiking and some of the best rock climbing in the Midwest If yoursquore a little less outdoorsy you could spend a day in Wisconsin Dells the waterpark capital of the world

You started your career going in another direction What is your background and what inspired you to start this business

Ive known for a long time that Id be an entrepreneur in a creative field I started out as a Montessori teacher where I

was free to release my right brain into creative freedom Much of the Montessori philosophy incorporates the exploration of the things that you find the most interesting One year my class seemed interested in flowers as spring arrived so I brought freesia into my classroom and prepared the Montessori botany unit I distinctly remember feeling overwhelmed with happiness the moment I cut the stems and placed them into the most precious pastel-colored vase that complemented the bright yellow blooms It was so symmetrical and everything about it was just perfect That was the exact moment I knew I had to learn more I attended floral design school to learn about flowers technique and styling and almost immediately began designing wedding flowers over the summer and on weekends The timing was just right with where I was in my life It felt so good that I made the decision to invest my all into it and I havent looked back

CASEYrsquoS ADVICE FOR A MEMORABLE WEDDING

OR SPECIAL EVENT

There is so much to think about when executing your vision for a perfect event Here are a few things to keep in mind from the start

PRIORITIZE PLAN AND BUDGETFlowers are often one of the last details clients think about when planning a wedding and unfortunately often late in the planning process when budgets are beginning to strain A good florist will do a beautiful job even with a small budget but as with anything else you get what you pay for Understanding the cost of executing your vision from the start of the planning process will help tremendously Florals lighting and decor have a huge impact and if you want those details done well it must be budgeted properly from the start

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNERIt breaks my heart when I see brides grooms and families stressed out on their wedding day because they tried to handle too much themselves Pinterest is a great place to find do-it-yourself ideas but many of them are actually created by professionals and are more difficult than yoursquore led to believe I always encourage clients to use the rehearsal dinner or bridal party for showcasing their own vases and decor DIY projects or personal touches For the wedding hire a designer with the skills experience and trusted resources to ensure the overall design concept is perfectly executed Having a professional handle all of the planning coordinating and execution so that you can actually experience your wedding or event and remember it as one of the most enjoyable days of your life is worth every penny

REMEMBER THE TRUE MEANINGYour wedding day is and should be one of the most memorable days of your lives The wedding should reflect the two people getting married and should speak to the things that are relevant to their decision to be together forever Also if you can avoid it never plan a wedding to please other people Do whatrsquos right for you and your spouse-to-be with every decision Embarking on a new journey together as a married couple is what a wedding is all about

You have an inspirational mission for this business that goes beyond what we might see on the surface What is your plan to create opportunities for women and what motivates you in this goal

I fell in love with entrepreneurship mostly because it empowered me to pursue my dreams and gave me a reason to believe in myself During my final year of teaching when I was working between 80 to 90 hours per week balancing the classroom and a new business two friends of mine Dana Cook and Sarah Moshman went on tour with their Emmy Award winning documentary The Empowerment Project Feeling personally connected to the message of the film I decided to host a screening in Evanston and promoted it to women from the area The film asks What would you do if you werent afraid to fail and features women around the country pursuing the careers of their dreams I was inspired to do more with my business and use it as a platform to empower other womenMy own journey of self-value empowerment inspiration and love is where the name VEIL

comes from I think women now more than ever are learning that their dreams are attainable I was blessed with parents who showed me and my brother endless love and support That sort of guidance is where my passion work ethic and drive stem from

My program will provide training in floral and event design mentoring in a safe

and empowering space and help women in need develop professional skills such as budgeting resume writing and interviewing With appropriate training women from the VEIL program will work in teams to provide consulting design guidance and complete beginning to end planning production and execution of beautiful designs for some of my clients As a former teacher I feel the need to provide a safe learning space for women who might have difficulty finding their voice in the professional world and teach various job skills that will guide them toward their own professional success If every woman in the VEIL program leaves with the belief in herself that she can reach her fullest potential Irsquoll go home every day completely satisfied with my own work

Danielle Bruflodt is a powerhouse managing multiple businesses creative pursuits volunteer commitments and an enviable vacation schedule all with style

and flair How does she do it Dani was kind enough to share her secrets for highly productive and fulfilling entrepreneurship

You are a social media specialist and content creator as well as a successful online retailer Tell us about your background and the path that brought you to this profession

I was a history major and wanted to be a museum curator but during grad school I realized that museum work wasnrsquot quite the right fit even though I loved writing designing research and creating beautiful collections I left graduate school for a job with a publishing company and also launched my blog which I worked on at night and on weekends A few months later I got the opportunity to serve as a wedding blogger for Minneapolis-StPaul Magazine

Working at a publishing company and blogging for a major local magazine right when social media was coming of age really worked in my favor I started managing

social media for various clients in Minneapolis and when my husband and I relocated to Madison Wisconsin for his job I was able to work remotely for the publishing company and take social media clients on the side Now I work with 7 social media clients on a day-to-day basis take consulting gigs as my schedule allows and run my blog and Etsy shop Itrsquos a real job

Your website ThymeIsHoneycom is a fun mix of inspiration practical advice style and even recipes What would you describe as your niche

Thyme is Honey started out as a place for me to showcase my hobbies when I was working a regular 8-5 job but as my business evolved my blog has evolved along with it Now the blog serves as a portfolio for my clients I showcase everything from outfits recipes and motivational quotes to well-researched posts on a focused topic I also try to display various skills photography graphic design writing watercolor painting video etc so that my clients can see the different ways I can support their brand

Thyme is Honey had more than 11 Million pageviews last year What advice can you offer aspiring bloggers

Be passionate about it In the beginning yoursquoll need a reason to write besides exposure money or an audience---because yoursquoll likely lack all of those You must write well of course but to be successful yoursquoll also benefit from knowing photography graphic design photo editing google analytics SEO and so much more As a blogger you can never stop learning YouTube is your best friend----you can find a tutorial for anything there Itrsquos Back-to-School time and many of us have plans to be more organized and productive at this time of the year We have a wide range of gadgets and apps to schedule our day but there is something so satisfying about making a good old-fashion list on paper and crossing off tasks You created a line of daily planning tools that are practical and easy to use How did you come up with those

I designed my notepads for myself in 2010 I was busy working full-time blogging for myself and for MSP-Mag while trying to plan and get fit for a wedding The act of juggling different roles while focusing on my health prompted the original design of my Daily Page I lost 26 pounds during that time and educated myself about health and nutrition After having success with it personally I shared a printable file of it on my blog for free Readers loved it and I was ecstatic that I was helping people Soon people started asking me to make a notepad version that they could purchase I saved for 6 months to produce 250 notepads I took pre-orders online and they sold out almost instantly That was the beginning of my Etsy Shop

How do you use those tools to organize your day

Rule number one is that you HAVE to set aside time to fill out the page If you donrsquot it wonrsquot work for you I suggest that you take time at the end of your day or before bed and start filling out tomorrowrsquos page Think about your goals What will you eat What events do you have When will you have free time to go to

the gym yoga class or just a quick walk between meetings Filling it out at night gives me clarity and helps me sleep If you commit to doing this every day for 2-3 weeks yoursquoll find that your productivity increases and your stress decreases You start to use your time more wisely You appreciate your free time and squeeze in 10 minutes of reading or a walk with the dog Most importantly you get to the end of a day and you can look back at the things you accomplished and feel fulfilled And similarly when you have an off day you can look back and think about where your day was derailed and what you could have done to make it more productive

I believe that therersquos a strong connection between what we write what we read and what we actually accomplish There are a lot of apps out there Irsquove tried most of them And Irsquove received hundreds of requests to create an app from my design But for me nothing will ever be better than a fresh notepad and a brightly colored pen

Yoursquove also expanded some of your product offerings What else is available in your online shop

I recently introduced the Today is Mine Notepad Itrsquos smaller (55 x 8 inches) but twice as thick as my Daily Page Notepad I also added a Pencil Set that is embossed with funny sayings about being organized Last but not least are my Snarky Snail Mail Cards---theyrsquore just a fun little project featuring sayings that entertain me but they actually sell well

Along with my Etsy Shop you can also find my graphic design work on Society 6 where I offer everything from phone cases and prints to throw pillows and tote bags

Besides your business ventures you also enjoy volunteering Can you tell us about your involvement with Fetch Wisconsin Rescue and other ways you like to donate your time

I love volunteering and for me itrsquos really important to give back Fetch Wisconsin Rescue is a dog rescue based in Madison Wisconsin We work to keep dogs out of shelters and provide them with temporary foster homes until theyrsquore adopted I wrote a post about my experience with Fetch and different ways you can get involved

take the ferry to Washington Island Ride your bike towards Old School Beach but make a stop at Nelsenrsquos Hall and take a shot of bitters

2nd Anniversary Lake Huron Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Mackinac Island Highlights Big Spring (Kitch-iti-kipi) in the UP of Michigan a spring-fed pond where you can see clearly to the bottom (about 40 feet deep) and view gigantic trout swimming on the bottom of the crystal-clear pool No cars are allowed on Mackinac Island so itrsquos a bicycle haven Bike the path all the way around the island and then indulge in fudge Donrsquot miss a drink on the patio at the Pink Pony at sunset

3rd Anniversary Lake Erie Sandusky and South Bass Island Ohio En route to South Bass Island we visited Indiana Dunes State Park the Notre Dame campus and spent an afternoon at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky Then we took the ferry to South Bass Island called the Key West of the Midwest The island is known for swim-up bars and it was a pretty constant party It was a lot of fun but the highlight of the trip for us was kayaking to various hidden beaches and islands

4th Anniversary Lake Ontario Toronto and Prince Edward County Canada This year we went international road-tripping through Canada We biked in Toronto and found amazing views of the city Prince Edward County is on the north shore of Lake Ontario Itrsquos small (around 10 miles from coast to coast) but has more than 40 wineries Itrsquos also home to North Americarsquos largest freshwater sand dunes Definitely spend a day at Sandbanks Park Have dinner at Lake on the Mountain and see a concert at The Hayloft Dance Hall For our 5th anniversary wersquore hoping to go back to Lake Superior and bring the trip full circle

To Wrap It Up Whatrsquos next for Thyme is Honey

I take things one day at a time Currently I have one employee and an intern and our little team works really well together Sometimes it feels like success means an office and a larger team---but it also feels like that would be going backwards Irsquove worked hard to be able to work for myself and have the freedom to work when and where I want I really like the way things are but Irsquom excited to see how our client base and product offerings expand in the future

but within two months my husband and I were signed up to foster a puppy It was one of those amazing life-changing experiences and I think we both became better people through fostering That experience pushed me to become more involved with Fetch so I now help manage their website and Facebook page as well as help plan monthly social events for volunteers

Your adorable Jack Russell Terrier Walter is a media darling in his own right Tell us about him

Walter will be 4 in October and is definitely our baby Hersquos a wire-haired Jack Russell Terrier but as a puppy I had his coat regularly trimmed so that it became soft and fluffy Hersquos a photogenic little ham and he loves attention

Although I make him do a lot of ridiculous things ( just check his hashtag) he also gets to travel canoe camp hike rock climb and spend all of his days lounging about our house yard or deck while I work from home Irsquod say hersquos got it pretty good despite the occasional costume or photoshoot Walter has definitely become part of the Thyme is Honey brand I think some of my most liked instagram posts of all time are still of him

You and your husband Josh visited all five Great Lakes in the past five years Why was this important to you and what are some of your favorite places to visit in the Great Lakes Region

Josh and I got married at Superior Shores Resort in Two Harbors Minnesota along the north shore of Lake Superior in 2011 They have a beautiful pebble beach and amazing photo opportunities Because we got married on a Great Lake we decided to try one each year for our anniversary so that wersquod visit all 5 by our 4 year anniversary Herersquos a quick run-down of our trips
