Spring renovations have come and gone and our focus now is all about producing some excellent surfaces for the membership to play off. Greens have taken a while to come back, but that was only due to us allowing every possibility of germination of some bent grass seed. We are trying to maintain and increase the percentage of bent grass in the greens. This is an ongoing battle, but with more chemical technology than ever before, the scales could be tilting in a favourable manner.

Fairways, surrounds and tees all were scarified, and sliced. The aim was to remove any dead thatch that had accumulated over the frosty winter months, and relieve the compaction that is caused by all the cart traffic and player numbers. Tees also were cored to allow increased water penetration coming into the warmest part of the year. Normally we wait until December for these renovations, but given that we experienced many weeks with 30+ degrees, the couch was triggered out of dormancy and into growth far earlier than normal. Last year we still had a handful of frosts into October.

Our dams were finally filled up and what a relief to be able to put the necessary water onto the course over this summer. Fairways and tees have received adequate amounts of fertiliser and they will be growing quickly over the coming weeks.

Parramatta grass and paspalum is continually removed from the fairways and surrounds, and I encourage any member that sees a clump here or there please remove it and help rid Lakeside of these weeds.

Most bunkers have had new drainage lines and fresh bunker sand added to them. This is now evident as recent rainfall had caused only old bunkers yet to be renovated out of play.

Our fleet of machinery was bolstered by the arrival of 5 new Kubota utilities. The sum of $68000 spent on these items has

definitely allowed us to be more productive in the way we can get around the course. Their role is so important to our staff and without them we could not possibly be on the different areas on the course and spread our resources as wide as what we can now. We also have installed $120000 of new satellites onto the course. The satellites operate the irrigation system on the ground. Centrally controlled from a computer and via radio frequency, these satellites turn on and off every sprinkler you see (sometimes feel! my apologies for those who have been showered). They also have enabled flexibility in our watering system and cost savings through reduced downtime and more efficient watering. The reason behind the purchase was we had lost communication to the course via the 20 year old cabling, and the old satellites had stopped being manufactured many years ago.

New irrigation has been installed over winter to water some areas that didn’t receive any irrigation. Areas like the 4th fairway bunkers, 6th middle rough mounds on the fairway, 11th fairway bunkers, and 12th/16th/17th fairway bunkers. We will access over the coming summer to see where else might benefit from new irrigation.

Still on irrigation, we also have planned some upgrades to the pump station in the coming months. Some major leaks, 20 year old pumps and electrical panels have seen its fair share of repair work. West’s board have thankfully given the go ahead to proceed with the upgrade after some weeks we were resorting to watering greens and the course with our 2000lt spray tank. This was due to our inlet pipe losing prime all the time due to a hole possibly in the concrete under the dam wall. An update will be provided when works commence. Upgrades are forecasted to cost $170000

SEE YOU ALL OUT ON THE COURSE

I get as much fun as the next man from whaling the ball as hard as I can and catching it squarely on the button. But from sad experience I learned not to try this in a round that meant anything.

Lakeside Ladies Happenings

LAKESIDE CONNECT | SPRING 2014 4

Tee Up 4 LifeTee Up 4 Life, the ladies annual fund raising day, is over for another year with approximately $9,000 being raised. It is a remarkable achievement considering all the money is actually raised on the day from the participants. Fundraising highlights were $2,670 from the silent auctions and $1,000 from the sale of used clubs.

A cheque for $7,000.00 from 2013 was presented to Joanne Meehan the National State Manager of ‘Look Good Feel Better’ who was overwhelmed with the donation.

On the day, the boys from the pro shop plied the girls with wines and champagne around the course, which by all accounts was very well received. A very nice meal was had at the end of the golf, washed down again by some wine.

152 ladies teed it up and they came from Avondale to Shellharbour, and in between.

The Tee up 4 Life Trophy, was won by the Bankstown team of Pam Barton, Christine Harrison, Lorraine Collins and Patricia Addington with 98 points. It is the second year in a row Pam and Christine have been in the winning team. Just one point behind was the mostly Lakeside team of Carol Smidt, Robyn Francis, Ann McClintock and late replacement, Leanne Graham from St Michaels.

Tracey Wood with her girls from Bankstown and Kogarah, Julie Turnbull, Jill Campbell and Donna McCormack were the scratch winners with 62 points.

Other big winners on the day were Jill Campbell who won the $100 Super Pin and Barbara Finn from Castle Hill who secured the $50 cash pin donated by Georgie Dudacek.

Many compliments were received on the course, venue and food. Thanks to the club for its continued support and all those ladies who donated, spent up big and worked hard to

make the day the success it is.
