    - ; - . " - ~-.,". -- .."Locale: spairi at the end of the 16th century. A prison inthe city of Seville and various places in the imagination ofMiguel de Cervantes.settiQ9: The common room of a stone prison vault whosefurthest reaches are lost i~ shadow. It has niches andcrannies where the prisoners make "their nes~s. It is belowground, reached by a stairway which may be raised andlowered, draw-bridge style, and is lighted by scant cold rayssifting through a grille overhead. A trap in the floor may beraised to permit access to a level still lower. Stage rightthere is a fire covered by a grille, and stage left and openwell. Other scenic elements are placed and removed by theprisoners as indicated.Note: The prison vault is actually a single basic settingwithin whose architecture the Don Quixote scenes devised byCervantes play. In nature it is an abstract platform whoseelements are fluid and adaptable to the Quixote scenes. Theprimary effect.to be achieved is that of improvisation; itmust seem as though all scenic, prop and costume items areadapted from materials already on stage, augmented by effectsfram Cervantes' theatrical trunk. This scheme is fundamentalto the play.Only in the inner play--as devised by Cervantes--is theremusical style and form. The prison scenes framing the innerplay are not "musicalized ll in the sense" that there is nosinging or dancing in these except as may be m ot iva te drealistically. The performance is played without intermission.
