Commander’s Message

Erine BaconCommander

This is my last message as your Commander for 2016-2017. It has been quite a year. It definitely had it ups & downs. Our membership goal for the year was 432 members. I am sorry to say that we have 70 plus members who have decided not to renew. It sure

doesn’t look good to prospective members when they ask why mem-bers are not renewing. At that rate in six years there will not be a Lamm.

Party rentals have gone up, as well as Lamm Lights ads thanks to Dom. Without them we would have no income at all. We need the support of members to have fundraisers to keep the Post operating. Dom cannot do it all.

We are getting requests for donations to children’s & veterans’ organizations and taking no action. These are programs the American Legion stands for! At May’s meet-ing there was a motion to buy a full page ad for our OWN Baseball Team & it was balked at cause we “don’t” have the money. Our own Youth Program! We have repairs to both the main building and the Grove that HAVE to be made. As an American Legion Post we are supposed to support our veterans and their families. We need to be doing more. We should have a fund to pay the dues for members who quit because the cost is a hardship to them.

There have been a couple issues this past year I wish I did not have to take part in. On the other hand there have been some positive events. One major event has been the involvement with the Buffalo Niagara Hon-or Flight Organization. John Arnold & Charles Latona from our Post were on the May 6 flight to D.C. I went as Chuck’s guardian. There are too many highlights to mention all with the exception of one. Every Saturday 93 yr. old “Senator” Bob Dole is at the WWII Monument

to greet the veterans for a short conversa-tion and to shake their hand in thanks for their service.

For those who may be interested in going on an Honor Flight (WWII & Korean Veter-ans), the next one will be September 23. ’17. You may contact me

for information. I will try to also get the information in our newsletter and on our webpage. If you are looking for a place to donate you might consider Honor Flight. The cost of a trip is approximately $40,000, all from dona-tions.

Now to take the hat off & put it back on, I will be your Command-er again for the 2017-2018 year. Happily, we have a full slate of officers this year. I will try to run the year with a half full glass. I am looking forward to increased membership, support of our members, having events to take us out of the red. John Scalisi has come for-ward to help Jack Michel mow the lawn. Tony Gugliuzza could use some help with minor repairs. These are not big construction jobs. We could use help at Bingo. We need someone who knows some-thing about sound systems & wiring. Whatever your talent is, we can find a spot for you - if only a couple hours here and there.

I want to thank all those who have worked all year - Bingo, around the Post doing so many varied jobs, those who have worked parities, my officers, Enterprise, including the Auxiliary. A special thanks to Dominic Savarino for his hard work publishing the Lamm Lights and all the work booking parties and the hours devoted to the Post. A big thanks also to the four members who made donations to the Post.

Judy & I are looking forward to seeing you August 6 for the Lamm Family Picnic. Look for details elsewhere.

We could use a couple bodies to cook hots & hamburgs at the picnic – also August 9th for the Baseball Team picnic. Contact me 716-689-2775; [email protected]

Reminder, our June 12th Membership Meeting will be the last one for the Summer.

No member shall be entitled to vote for a member of the Board of Directors unless they shall at the time of such voting, be a member in good standing in the George F. Lamm Post #622 of the American Legion, we are having a difficult time securing members to run for the high office of Directors for the George F. Lamm Post Enterprises.

Due to that, we are asking the membership to allow t he Enterprise to amend Article V, section 1, to eight (8) elected members instead of ten (10) elected members.

If we have enough qualified members to fill the Director positions, we will not have to amend the By-Laws of the Enterprises. If we cannot secure enough qualified members to run for this high office, we will have to amend Article V section 1 item A.
