Dear Lamplighter Community,

At this year’s Lamplighter Carnival, just before theFourth Grade Jacket Ceremony, I realized that I hadleft the notes for my remarks on my desk. I slippedinto the building past the “No Admittance” sign, feeling certain that the warning didn’t apply to me.(One of the many perks of being Head of School.)As I was making my way through the emptybuilding, I heard the unmistakable sounds ofchildren. Ah ha! Children who had ignored thesign and were undoubtedly up to no good! Ifollowed the sounds and found seven boys sittingin the well in Mrs. Melton’s fourth grade classroom.

But they were not fourth graders. These boys were older – maybe fifth or sixth graders. And they werejust sitting there laughing and talking. I said, “Hi boys. What’s going on?” One boy said, “Oh, we’re justreminiscing.” Eleven-year-old boys sitting around reminiscing? What a novel concept! But they clearlywere doing just that. Like old friends around a campfire, all they needed were some s’mores. I wantedto join them in the well to listen, but of course that would have ruined everything. Their memories andstories of their days at Lamplighter are theirs and theirs alone. The seven-year program at this wonderfulSchool was their journey, and they were snatching a moment in a classroom well to relive it and retell itto each other.

I returned to the Carnival to award letter jackets to the current Seniors as has been the ritual for manyyears. The Carnival theme was “There’s No Place Like Lamplighter” as in Dorothy’s words to Toto in theWizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home.” In September we purchased our land from Hockaday, ensuring a permanent home for The Lamplighter School. The eager Seniors celebrated their milestonewith great fanfare but without much knowledge of the behind-the-scenes work the Board of Trustees hadbeen doing on their behalf. But someday they will understand, and they will return to the wells and theCarnival and alumni events to reminisce about their childhood at Lamplighter, and many of them willenroll their own children. All of this will take place in the same buildings and on the same land –Lamplighter’s permanent home.

As you read the articles in this issue of the Lamppost, you will hear the recurring theme of gratitude forour home: Sheila McCartor and Claude White’s rendition of This Land is Our Land, alum Kate Mosle’swork with the Take the Lead Program, the creativity of the Koutsogeorgas brothers, and the work of KarenPollock, Alex Sharma, and the Head Search Committee.

Please take a few moments to review the Report of Annual Giving. You may feel overwhelmed, as I have,by the generosity of so many people. Their passion, dedication, and loyalty to Lamplighter ensure thattoday’s students have the very best faculty, programs, and environment possible.

How fortunate I am to be the Interim Head of School during this historic year. You have been a welcomingcommunity, and I continue to be energized working alongside Lamplighter’s capable and enthusiasticfaculty and staff on behalf of the School’s young scholars. I look forward to getting to know more of youthroughout the year.

Sincerely,

Judy GassInterim Head of School

Dear Lamplighter Community,

As a current parent, parent of an alum, and an alum myself, Ihave a long appreciation for Lamplighter and the nurturing yetcritical role it plays in the development of our children. Startingthis year, I have the distinct honor and privilege to serve as theChair of the Lamplighter Board of Trustees. Since this is my firstcommunication with the Lamplighter Community in this newrole, I thought it would be a good time to share some insight onthe role that the Board of Trustees plays in an independentschool as well as to update you on our exciting search for apermanent Head of School.

Trustees, simply put, are the guardians of the School. We workto ensure the relevance, vitality, and success of the School’smission: “Lamplighter is a nurturing, child-centered communitybuilt upon academic and personal excellence, trust, and respect

for diversity in each other and in our society. Lamplighter inspires life-long learners who are selfconfident, self reliant, and creative critical thinkers.”

Our primary responsibilities focus on governance, sound financial management, and long-termstrategic thinking. We are guided by a strategic plan which prioritizes goals and helps to monitor andmeasure the School’s success in implementing these items. Our current strategic plan is accessible onthe “Who We Are – Fulfilling Our Mission” page on the school’s website.

Currently, our Board’s most important endeavor is to find the visionary leader who will direct our schoolas we prepare our students for life in the 21st century. As we embark on the search for this new Head ofSchool, we have engaged the assistance of Carney, Sandoe and Associates to guide us through theprocess. They will work under the leadership of Alex Sharma and a search committee of 12 personsrepresenting all constituencies of our school.

In order to attract the best possible candidates, we involved the school’s many constituencies throughtown hall meetings, one-on-one sessions, and a comprehensive on-line survey. This work includedparents, alumni, trustees, past leaders, faculty, staff, and students. Each group provided valuable insightinto what makes Lamplighter unique, what qualities we are looking for in our next Head of School, andwhat challenges face Lamplighter in the short and long term.

As a school dedicated to young children we, of course found the comments from the youngest membersof our community both enlightening and refreshing. They are looking for a Head of School who “loveskids,” is “nice,” and enjoys “being in the hallways and the classroom.”

We are confident that this process will result in selecting a dynamic leader who will embrace ourmission, celebrate and love children, incorporate progressive learning methods, and leave an impact onnot only the students, but also on the entire community. It is an exciting time at Lamplighter, and I amproud to represent the Board of Trustees and the Lamplighter Community.

Sincerely,

Karen PollockChair, Lamplighter Board of Trustees

More Pico, Please

Gretchen Pollom recently volunteered her culinarytalents in the classroom. She worked with Mrs.Krage's kindergarten classes to make pico de gallo tocelebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexico's200th anniversary. The children ate tomatoes, greenbell peppers, onions, and avocados. Most childrencame back for second and third helpings.Lamplighter’s Cultural Awareness Chairs, GowriSharma and Meghana Dhall, have planned manyexciting global adventures for students this year.

On October 15 the Lamplighter campus wastransformed into the Emerald City for the“There’s No Place Like Lamplighter” Carnival.Students could literally slide down the YellowBrick Road into a magical land of games andattractions. After a ride on the Flying MonkeyZipline, many enjoyed a game of Tin Man’sLaser Tag and some much needed pamperingat the Ruby Slipper Salon. After working up anappetite, it was time to visit the Emerald CityCafé for one of Dorothy’s favorite Mooyah

Burgers and a hauntingly good Wicked sandwich from Which Wich. If McDonald’s AppleDippers and Hail Merry Macaroons weren’t enough, the Munchkin Land Bake Sale had everydelight imaginable to ensure no one left without sweet tooth satisfaction. Carnival Co-ChairsSharon Pfaff and Laurie Darlak, along with a hardworking committee and volunteers fromalmost every Lamplighter family, had the heart, brains and courage to make sure this Carnivalwill be a favorite of our children for years to come.

Zip Line Gets Zippier

This past summer our beloved zip line received an extreme makeover

thanks to Facilities Engineer Bryant Wolf. Bryant replaced main lines,

attached seats, and added stops on the ends. Now this first grade rite

of passage has some extra zing. Next time you visit the campus, take a

ride – if you dare!

Rachel’s Tips on Raising Girls

On September 22 Rachel Simmons, author of New York Times bestsellers Odd Girl Out: The

Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls and The Curse of the Good Girl: Raising Authentic Girls

with Courage and Confidence, spoke to a packed house at Lamplighter. The event was

designed as a workshop for mothers and daughters to discuss the pressures girls face to

conform to the old, narrow paradigm of being a people pleasing “good girl” in today’s society.

The audience took with them tips on conflict resolution, self respect, and relationship building.

Mattingly Dream Makers

The Mattingly Fund for Excellence in Education was established in 2000 to honor Pat

Mattingly upon her retirement from leading Lamplighter. Since this time, 11 members of

the faculty have received awards that allowed them to pursue a personal quest. Recipients

have participated in everything from a Tuscan cooking school to an artist’s retreat.

Throughout her 26-year career, Pat was a champion of teachers and students alike,

advocating and promoting life-long learning. The purpose of this professional

development program is to assist teachers to grow personally and professionally, enabling

them to become better educators and enhancing the contributions they make to

On September 8, 2010 we celebrated the purchase of our 12.66acre campus from The Hockaday School. For more than 40years, the two schools have been neighbors, sharing a longhistory of excellent education for students in the greater Dallascommunity. We held a “This Land is Our Land” celebrationwhere students from pre-kindergarten through fourth gradecreated “dirt cupcakes” to honor the historic event. “We felt itwas important to find an age-appropriate way to share theexcitement with our students,” explained Judy Gass,Lamplighter’s Interim Head of School. “They were completelyenthralled with the crushing of the cookies to make the ‘dirt’.Seeing the smiles on their chocolate-covered faces reminded usall of the reason we worked so hard to make this day happen.”

The Lamplighter ProjectKate Mosle, Lamplighter Class of 2004, attended the Take the Leadprogram at Mount Holyoke this past September, where she created anaction plan to reach out to young Lamplighter Alumni to raise moneyfor Lamplighter’s purchase of the land from Hockaday.

Take the Lead is a long weekend of highly interactive workshops andactivities that build leadership skills for idealistic, action-oriented youngwomen who want to make a difference in the world. It is about turningideas into action and becoming an effective agent of positive change.Participants are a diverse group of high school juniors from across thecountry.

Kate has been a strong advocate of Lamplighter’s land acquisition since she was in fifth grade, constantlywriting essays and delivering speeches on behalf of the school. Kate states in her essay, “When I attendedLamplighter, I didn’t realize the lasting impression it would have on me. Today, I can see how my years atLamplighter impacted the way I have evolved. This spark, started at Lamplighter, became a thought whichturned into action, tapping my interest in the importance of early childhood education. By helpingLamplighter keep its home, I will not only help empower children to grow up to lead our community, but Iwill personally learn important leadership skills that can be applied throughout my life.”

Craig Smith '93 recently arrived in Dallas from a three year stint in Chile. He lost no time contacting hisLamplighter peers and immediately organized a "planning" reunion for all alumni that he could contact inDallas.

He joined Ashley Johnson, Sheila Leventhal McCartor, Marty Melton, Finley Harbaugh, Mike Johnson, andLindsay Wellington for dinner and reminisced about Lamplighter. Everyone had a favorite anecdote fromhis or her Lamplighter years. Recollections included memories of Lamplighter Layers, barn activities, thesenior opera, poetry, and motorcycle incidents.

"Yes, there is another reunion on the way. My goal is for the Class of '93 to begin building a sense of unitywith gatherings once a month," said Craig. "I feel that it is so important to continue the relationships builtduring one's formative years, because those with whom you grow shed light on explaining who you are."

Report of Annual Giving 2009-201020

The 2009-2010 school year was a stellar one forLamplighter. As you read the following pages, youwill notice the widespread and diverse support ofour trustees, life trustees, current and formerparents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and alumni.Whether giving to the Annual Fund, capital projectsand endowment, or through the LPA or AlumniAssociation, Lamplighter is a better place because ofthe passion and dedication of these loyal individuals.

A few highlights from the year include:

• The Annual Fund closed at an astonishing98% participation, the highest in the school’s history, thanks to the committed and energetic group ofAnnual Fund volunteers.

• The strong leadership of the Lamplighter Parents’ Association fostered elevated communityparticipation at the Carnival, Auction, and International Night. The Lamplighter Love Boat Auction raisedover $241,000.

• Lamplighter alumni of all ages returned to campus last February for Alumni Week. Over 250people celebrated the accomplishments of Spirit Award Winners David Corrigan ‘68, David Fields ‘71, andJennifer Mosle at a luncheon held in their honor. Reunions were held for the Classes of 2002 and 2006,bringing students and their parents back to campus for reminiscing and reconnecting with each other andthe school.

• More than 1,000 people contributed $5,273,758 to the Annual Fund, capital projects, andendowment. Additionally, Lamplighter received two of the largest pledges in its history.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Lamplighter is able to maintain the academic excellence andnurturing environment for which the school is known while staying on the cutting edge of tomorrow’seducational advancements.

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Lamplighter, please accept my sincerest gratitude for your steadfastsupport.

In Lamplighter Spirit,

Sandy Diamond
